I sent an e-mail to T-Mobile asking if they were planning to make an ROMS available and whether or not they would be offering a ROM upgrade with Windows Mobile 6. Below is the response that I received; Good Morning
There are no plans at present to release a rom update for the MDA Vario 2.
When there have been new operating systems for windows mobile devices released these have never been available as an upgrade, only as a new device model.
Hope this answers your questions.

T-Mobile
I've even e-mailed T-Mobile back telling them that it works on the Hermes, but they're still insistant that I won't get it throught them. So with regards to Windows Mobile 6, will Microsoft make this available in a way that I could purchase it?

I was hoping that they are going to release on for the Wizard. By the looks of it, I'll be going Underground.. or getting Beautiful
Anyway, I'm just wondering how accurate this information is. Just that his/her English sounds weird to me (eg. "When there have been..." and the rest of the sentence), probably some young girl at India T-Mobile call center hired to answer emails?
I dont think that you are wrong there....
I feel that they are working on something in the background and waiting for all the issues to be ironed out before releasing any update...
I am wondering if there is going to be a cost involved or weather they are going to only give it to NEW hermes????
T-mobile = Unpredictable
D
I would be interested in how T-Mobile would react if there was a large scale request for it.
I spoke to T-mobile a week ago regarding problems with the Vario II. After speaking with their tech support people, the customer rep told me that they are testing ROM updates for the vario II and expected it to be available in a month.
So keep checking http://www.tm-phonedownloads.com/
I didn't ask about WM6. I doubt they'd release it for the Vario II as it could affect sales of future devices, but if they get the majority of the problems sorted (particularly bluetooth) i'd be happy enough. I'm on my 2nd handset.
My SGS phone app has this button to make a video call, and I'm totally curious about this functionality. I haven't seen anyone posting on the forums about it, and it's barely mentioned in the phone's user manual. Anyone successfully placed video calls with the default phone app?
Anyone know how it works -- what protocols/technologies?
Does it rely on your carrier having implemented something in order to work, or does it work over the internet?
Does it only work to other SGS phones, or can it work with other phones or video conferencing applications?
BTW, my SGS came from SingTel and is currently running JG1, but the option to make video calls was present in the original firmware, too.
if you are in USA or Canada, you can forget about it.
our networks currently does allow / provide that feature.
if you are in Europe or Asia, you should have no problem using it with another person that has the same feature on their phone.
there are 3rd party applications that uses Video Call of IP phone, google it
Just tried it, videocalled my girlfriend on her Nokia E52, worked splendidly
Hah Apple - videocall just other apple-people? Lame.
this sounds like functionality supported by carriers outside the US... (I'm in the US.) so I'm curious, how do you establish the call? Do you simply dial her regular mobile phone number and press the video call button and then everything else just works? in other words, no typing in IP addresses, no logging in to 3rd party services like Skype, nothing other than simply dialing a mobile phone number?
I can confirm that it works quite well. Most European carriers have been offering this feature for years (I could place video calls with my old Nokia N80 4 years ago), and sometimes they don't cost extra if you call a subscriber of the same carrier.
You just select video call instead of normal call, and if the other phone supports it you'll get video, as long as the other person chooses to enable it. I've tried a few calls with the SGS and I've been told that the quality of the received image is pretty good.
If the other phone doesn't support it, or is not under 3G cover you'll get a 'video call currently not possible' error.
darnap said it quite well
Remember trying in on my old N95 many years ago, but didn't see any real use for it
Yeah I had this on my NEC E313 phone like 5 years ago, curiously we somehow managed to do it over the phone network, on phones that are like pocket calculators now. I wonder if Steve really had to swallow his pride when he made such a big thing of it, and it only working over WiFi.
Like others I tried it a few years ago, simply dialing the number and choosing video call. However, the price of video calling was like 4, 5 or 6 times the price of a normal call(I forget the pricing, but it was quite a difference)... I've only used it like 3-4 times, and that was just for me or others to try it out. I don't know, nor have I heard of, anyone who uses it on a regular basis. It's just a "Ooh! Shiny feature! Must try it out" kinda thing. Gets old REAL fast imo.
Regards
my old HTC Athena can do it, i'm surprised Windows Mobile actually made that work
again it only works in Europe and Asia AFAIK, when i try it in America it doesn't do anything
America doesn't have video calling yet? Sheesh, even Austraila has had it for years! Although it costs almost a dollar a minute to use...

Be aware that Fring and Skype are fighting each other so they can't call each other.
Also iPhone 4 can video call any other phones such as SGS too, using applications such as Fring.
Actually, their video call method is way more superior to ours. They don't need cell minutes which means they can do video call even on an airplane. The performance is also superior. I wish some Android developers come up with a video call application using that protocol soon. I also like to see video call application using thus protocol on desktop computers.
wont be superior for long unless said person is grandfathered into an unlimited data plan. However, you could still video call with wifi when its available for no cost. I have to add that skype is coming to android later this year and apparently its going to be the best thing in video calling. I hope they deliver.

yup! it sucks to live in America... we always get the oldest technology here... they dare to call themselves "1st" world countries...
for the past 10~20 years we've always had the junk phones from Europe/Asia basically anything that was new for you guys 5 years ago, is "new" in America.
it was not until iphone launched, that people realized all the stuff they've been missing.
I've been playing with smartphones 5~10 years before the iphone band wagon started, it's funny that people never realized that the features in iphone was looooooooong available on phones that were already available elsewhere in the world.
anyways Amen, finally carriers are starting to bring in the latest on smartphones to America
unfortunately like CARS, they are crippled to fit the "American's Needs" most Japanese import cars are crippled if you compare them to the same car made in Japan.
another example our SGS i9000 phones, the American version is crippled as well... sigh...
anyways.... i'll rather move to anywhere in Europe instead, unfortunately work are the cost of living are more expensive in the UK, maybe I should try Spain or Italy, or France

Not true.
Everyone that you calls would have made their own decisions on whther they would use Skype or Fring. So if you want to call them, you have no choice but to also have to use the same third party applications such as Fring or whatever one which is compatible with the other party's. If you're really into video calls, I suspect you need to have every popular third party applications installed on your own phone.
What? No.. If I'd want to videocall any one of my friends that don't have an iPhone, we've wouldn't have needed any third party application such as Fring or Skype - that's my point.. If I were to videocall friends with iPhone 4, we'd have to use Fring/Skype.
This is at least as long we're here in Europe, where videocalls have been something "all" mobile phones and networks have had for years.
Your last sentence I'm agreeing fully with though.
The point is that videocalling is a basic UMTS feature, so you don't need any extra application to use it. Most UMTS phones support it out of the box as it is a standard, so they are all compatible across vendors and models. The iPhone (even the iPhone 4) is one of the few phones that lacks the UMTS video calling capability, so it needs a third party app to do it.

You're right here.
I know a few people around here are carrying Tabs around on a day-to-day basis and I was wondering what people's opinions were of the practicality of using the Tab as a primary device, to replace a phone as opposed to complementing it.
I'm not looking to carry two devices or to pay for a second data SIM, so without being rude I'm not particularly interested in how well the Tab complements other devices, only in how sensible an idea it is to use the Tab as my main phone.
I mean, I know that if I were to get the Tab, I'd probably need a spare handset to use on the odd occasion when I didn't want to or couldn't take the Tab with me but when I could take the Tab, I wouldn't be looking to carry a second device at the same time.
This all ties in to a thread I started in the 'General' section addressing the general issue of what phone to get.
I think of the options I mentioned in that thread, that I'm drawn most to the Tab because it would best suit my needs/use but the size/practicality is, understandably I feel, a concern.
Anyway, any/all feedback will be greatly appreciated.
You are not mental.
I use it as a phone every day with a BT headset and have no problem whatsoever .
The only occasion I will not use it as a phone is when I go out and I need something that fits in my pocket without sticking out.

You're not alone. It's reasonable to use a bluetooth headset 1st, speakerphone 2nd and holding up to your ear 3rd. I predict 7" will be the new trend, large enough to make it easier to read but still pocketable in a man's jacket or lady's purse.
You can't hold again your head FYI. the earpiece isn't there on the tab.
clubtech... where did you get your unlocked phone and what did you pay if you don't mind sharing...
I'm looking for the least expensive unlocked quadband phone and so far the lowest price is ~$900 US.
thanks..
I use it is my primary phone and though it.is a bit cumbersome i dont mind it.
I need a good bluetooth headset with caller display though - can anybody recommend one?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
You can hold it to your head, you just need to put it upsidedown as the speakers are on the bottom of the phone, and when you use it that way the microphone will be right next your mouth.
I used it in this way a pair of time, you just need to lower the volume as the tab will automatically go in speaker phone mode when you don't have a paired bluetooth or wired headphone.

I just wonder how are you using it as a phone!
I live in the U.S.A, California. And my understanding that the Galaxy tab can't be used as a phone! The Galaxy tab is being release here with in 2 weeks!
I'm just wonder if there's a way that I could use it as a phone? Doe's any one here have any suggestions???
US models can't be used as a phone, EU ones can.
It's unclear whether the difference is hardware- or software-related.
So it's maybe possible that a US unti could be modded to make/receive calls or it may be impossible. Alternatively, you could procure an unlocked EU unit but you may have issues regarding network compatibility depending on your provider.

tmobile is starting on the 10th that when we will know if it can make calls or not, ill know by night fall. lol
The short answer is: Yes. You should use it with a wireless/Bluetooth headset.
well, I for one gonna use it as a main phone
don't care how dorky it gonna looks like, especially if you're only in your office, or in your cubicle, or in your house
who cares
Bluetooth can always be there when you go out
thanks to clubtech for sharing his experience too, i finally decided to use this as my main
i got mine today, hopefully can use it soon enough since i'm on a remote area now
Devices with phone capabilities and multitasking will change the world.
Now, I can have Skype, Nimbus, Fring or whatever, running in background and ACTICE.
That means i can also receive calls without while the application is in the background.
From now, my availability on the VOIP equals the availability on the phone and the answering method is the same (Skype on the computer requires headset)
This means i will use VOIP more and more.
The idea of paying a voice call depending of distance is so obsolete !!!
Traditional telephony will decline.
I hope, in 5 years, the traditional telephony will be like analog telephony today
I believe that in few yeas will pay only a data plan, and telephony and TV will be over IP.

I live in the U.S.A, California. I'm waiting to see if ATT or T-Mobile Galaxy tablet can be used as a phone!
I hope there's a APP that can be added ( like a VOIP app )can be used to work as a phone! I want to purchase the Galaxy tab , but I needed to work as a phone also! I know there's many people that need this also.
I just don't why !!! Samsung didn't allow the tablet to be used as cell phone here in the U.S.A.!
There is, apparently, an unlocked North American model that will arrive early next year which should, I think, allow calls.
The reason why none of the ones being sold by the various US networks will make calls is that the networks do not allow it.
If you want to apportion blame, then the bulk of it should fall upon the networks.
It's hard to see the logic behind that decision. Voice and data plans tend to pull in more revenue than data only plans, I can only imagine that the networks think you need to be forced into carrying both a phone and a tablet, when in reality most would choose that anyway.
Regards,
Dave

Hey Guys!
So the Xperia Z3 went on pre-order on the 1st of October with orders landing on doorsteps this past week.
Those who won a PS4 with their order have also been notified by now, and those orders begin shipping next week.
I personally think I may have been one of the first to order at 9:12am direct from Sony Online, as I was also selected as a winner for the PS4. (yay!)
This thread will be a general area for Australian owners and potential owners to hang out, ask questions, get advice and get help quickly and within your time zone.
If anyone helps you or offers you advice don't forget to hit the ":good: Thanks" button in the bottom left corner of their post!
Please let me know if there's any important Australian specific information and I will put it here in the OP!
Qn: Is flashing a generic Aus firmware (ie on an Optus, Voda, Telstra, Virgin phone) as simple us using Xperifirm to download, and Flashtool to decrypt, build and then flash?
Assuming the models are the same I don't see why not.
I know one of the carriers was meant to carry an exclusive model that also worked with their new 4G bands that they were rolling out.
The one I received from Sony directly is the D6653 model.
Any idea where i can buy one not tied up to a carrier? I'm at Brisbane CBD at the moment

how much is the phone and where can you buy it unlocked?
my sister wants to switch from her iphone 4s to the Z3.
retail from Sony AU is $859. Slightly higher pricepoint than their previous flagships.
Yatango is ~$799 i believe at the moment.
There may be cheaper options at present from HK/UK (Clove / Handtec) (exchange rate and shipping dependant)

If they haven't got it at launch, I highly doubt they will get it later. Give them a call though!
Hey guys, got my Z3 on Saturday and I'm loving it! Great phone, except for one major issue... I can't make phone calls at my workplace, despite it being in a strong Optus reception area of Melbourne CBD. Nobody else at work has a problem with Optus, and callers can hear me perfectly, but I cannot hear them. All I hear is a very broken up sound, like when you are in a poor reception area. If I force the phone into GSM only mode, it works. And it works fine in other areas that I've tried, albeit none of them were big buildings in the CBD.
There is another user on Whirlpool reporting the exact same issues with 2 Z3's on Optus. I'm not sure how to proceed with this. Optus technical support escalated the issue for me and were going to organise to have the phone replaced, although I really doubt that will solve anything.
Hey @tooch1, I posted on whirlpool forums some time back about having this issue but no one seemed to notice or even care.
It's happened on 3 z3's (one I purchased from eglobal which I've returned, and 2 optus outright handsets – 1 which I got replaced and another that I'm currently using).
I've diagnosed the issue to only occur when I'm connected to WiFi AND using 4G. However if I disconnect from WiFi its fine. Same holds true if I stick to keeping WiFi connected but switch to GSM only mode.. It's really odd. I'm wondering if it's a software issue because i don't know if I could be THAT unlucky to have had 3 faulty devices
Not gloating, just trying to help - I have not experienced this when on optus 4g/wifi (Melbourne) - meaning device specific I guess. Confirmed by torrenting off apple store free wifi whilst on voice call.
Sent from my D6653 using Tapatalk
To me it sounds like the device isn't automatically switching back to 3G to make the call for whatever reason.
As far as I know Optus has no announced plans to do VoLTE which means that either the phone is getting tricked into thinking it's possible, or it's broken.
For what it's worth, I've never had this issue on Vodafone but I did leave Optus as soon as I possibly could while I was with them to jump back to Voda. Far better service and quality.
Are people buying outright or on plan? If outright where from and how much?
Outright, $799 Yatango online (but they can be difficult to deal with eg selling things not in stock but marking as in stock)

Figured it would be nice for all us Brits to have a thread discussing how the U11 is on UK networks.
EE - VoLTE and WIFI Calling work out of the box on unlocked model from Very.co.uk
got mine from Carphone Warehouse on an EE contract and although unlocked it did have WiFI calling enabled, although in theory , this should not be the case as its not EE branded. Not complaining though I do not know how VoLTE works so i don't know how to check it. Might be the case that all unlocked UK CID models can support wifi calling, regardless of carrier branding. So nordic or others might not be able to do that.
Only gripe , and I have created a separate thread for that, is that Galileo support is not enabled on my phone which is strange and kinda stupid.

Hmmmm I probably would. Better everything apart from audio volume from headphones.
The only concern is the durability and smashing if I manage to drop it especially after coming from the HTC 1 0 all metal. I'll see how the Oneplus 5 does as that is also very tempting.
I have a u11 coming from O2 but unlocked. I use it with EE but I can't find a way to have 4g calling and Wi-Fi calling.
Someone could help?
Sounds like it probably has O2 firmware on it which means you're SOL for the time being until S-OFF arrives.
My device is unlocked unbranded stock firmware and 4g VoLTE calling and WiFi calling worked from day one. The phone actually asked if I wished to enable them.
Do you have the option in settings for WiFi calling (4g calling is in phone settings).
I'm on O2. You have to request it through the O2 app. Scroll down to 'Device details' and you will see Wifi and 4G calling. Click on it and it will send a request to O2, takes 24 hours.

That's what I did as my 10 still in contract with Vodafone for a year more but I really wanted an upgraded. Loving the u11 so far it has fixed the issues I had with my 10 like bad wifi/mobile signal problems with Bluetooth to my car system (weird micro cuts every so often)
The first device I got was faulty rebooted/shut down all the time couldn't even get through the setup wizard, got a refund and ordered a new one that is now working great.
Do wish Vodafone would enable WiFi and 4G calling but heck knows when/if that will happen unless you have a business account which I believe have it.
Edit: Seems vodafone does have this option now, can be enabled from your account it seems.

The Oreo update was released today. Currently having trouble updating mine, it downloads the update but then reboots into TWRP recovery then can't go any futher.
You have to return to stock before updating via OTA, with stock firmware, no root etc.
Bootloader can stay unlocked though.

Did you ever get this to work?
I'm happy with the phone apart from 2 issues:
- Still on the November security patch, and considering it's nearly March I don't think this is acceptable. America has December.
- Google Assistant does not work. Voice activation does not work and all the settings are greyed out. Have looked online and cannot find a fix. Have read even a restore won't fix it!
If these issues were addressed then this would be the best phone I've had.
Just to add to this. I have an unlocked / unbranded u11 from CPW UK. O2 sim pay monthly account. I've enabled the option in the app as above but still no toggles etc in my settings menu. I called htc UK just now and they said that a bug in the oreo update has removed this option, it's a known bug and the next update will address it... Seriously? Also no idea when the update will roll out...
Had mine since January after an unplanned upgrade and I'm really glad my HTC 10 got mullered by my friend's kid. Carphone Warehouse piled on extras and I eventually started pushing back to stop the freebies getting out of hand - had to move to EE from Vodafone for some reason I can't remember - not an issue. Rooted while on the wine 2 nights later so as to increase the suspense and the chance of bricking it - I went at it half cut basically and nearly trashed it, which is so much fun.
Can't grumble in Manchester city about signal or service although EE has a website that suggests they are delaying any move into the post 90's era and I'm sure they have a reason we'll one day marvel at when they suddenly replace a web presence so **** it must be deliberate digital art or summat - like Tracey Emin and Banksy making a collaborative statement about Google ruining everything - that is to be replaced by the tech from the movie War Games to make it more modern. At least the customer service is accessible if needed and don't annoy me with 'suggestions' like an app. that tells me things I know already but in a different way which makes it exciting and utterly essential.
The u11 is a top phone and if someone gave me a Samsung I'd curse the fool who did so. There's a list of superior spec's that the recent Samsung phones possess and yet on benchmark tests they mostly squeeze into a slight lead and can't manage to avoid being made by Samsung which means that it has lots of stuff but none of it is connected right and it will eventually make you feel angry because it slowly reveals its nature as a piece of crap with buttons like a phone.
I just wish HTC would explore an alternative to the Android system because Google are getting a bit shifty and I don't like the way they are more powerful than God but get all hissy with developers - they come at you like an all-powerful bastard when they're pissed but always do a great job of being really rubbish at maintaining a standpoint and eventually they go away - still, Stalin was bit annoying and no one would have thought he'd end up killing 10 million people before the War even started but he had the tools and then the bad mood - if Google don't do evil it's only cos they haven't seen the projections from Wall Street that show the profit they can make. If any company can shake Google surely HTC can - Samsung may do so but totally unintentionally and probably due to the distraction caused by phones that set aflame like a crappy transformer that is a phone AND a firework - then neither.
