Those graphs are an outright lie. They are from Gizmodo! They love Apple.
Opera is the most popular mobile browser. Symbian has over 30,000 apps, not 1,000, winmo (not on the list you notice) has 35,000+. Most iPhone apps are only made to fix missing features to start with, and all but 150 or so of the rest are rubbish and pointless.

and in the end, we download processor underclocking software, ROMs, programs, redesign every single detail on our device....iPhone users wobble tits

new iPhone announced....i lol'd, still no multitasking it seems, but they got a compass....i guess it's more important to know where South is then being able to consult a pdf/calculator/net/whatever in the middle of writing an email/sms

Ok now that we have that cleared up. Let all iPhone fanboys rejoice and bow their heads for the new creations. The greatest phone ever built now has cut and paste, mms and landscape keyboard. I bet we will never hear the end of this from the fanboys now! I can just picture fanboys everywhere bragging about it....lol

I don't know about that. I've had the HD for a week, and am seriously regretting getting rid of my iphone. I don't know if you've ever used an iphone for any length of time, but I don't really see how you can call it a horrible device

It certainly doesnt feel as epic as it is made to sound. Having used an iphone (not 3G) for a week, I actually preferred my old LG Viewty.

What to do with a G1?

I've been doing a bit of digging tonight on the various roms for the G1 and just wondered what the most recommended, feature rich and pretty rom is and why?

my advice to you.
1. dont ask a question like this, you will more than likely get flamed pretty bad.
2. try them all...thats what i do, you will very quickly find one you like and meets your needs.

You sir are absolutely correct. Well actually it wouldn't be flamin it would be more sarcastic responses. I'll behave on this until I get motivated. But yes your response is what the OP needs to do.

Why the suggestion of flaming, it's a straight forward question.
I'm sure there is a big difference between a stable and well established rom verses other buggy, unstable and unreliable roms.
I was merely looking for suggestions for me to look at, not a n00bs guide to being handheld through the install.

We just like having fun round here and might give a smart ass answer. But I would say cyanogen 4.0.4 is a stable and speedy build. But really it's one of those questions like what is you favorite movie. Everyone has there own opinions. So really just play around with the builds.

I've been having a look at Cyanogen and watching a few videos to see what it looks like in between watching Sky News for the story about the boy in Colorado who was last seen getting in his Dad's balloon.
Anyway, I've also seen a video of the Motorola Cliq which seem to have been installed on the G1. Looks very nice except that some of the functionality doesn't appear to work but it is still a beta from what I can see so that's to be expected.
Just as an aside, I presume that a suitable codec to support streaming windows media audio is still no where in sight?

Yea I was watching that before I left work. Saw the thing land and no kid inside. The sibling said the 6 year old fell out of it.
But actually there is an app called gmote (I believe thats the one) that allows you to stream music from computer to pc, if thats what your asking.

The top one is a picture of Gingerbread, though, from Goolge IO.

Why would they be using a prototype OS in a large keynote? It has a higher chance of failing in the middle of the presentation.

I thought that was froyo screenshots. humm.....
But in the video that op posted from google IO, they mentioned it's froyo. Not gingerbread. I am confused.

This post made me laugh. Did you watch the keynote? They had a very high rate of failure in the middle of the demos. LMAO.
Seriously though, the top pic is gingerbread. The demonstration was of a feature from a future release after Froyo. It's not that big of an assumption to assume what "future release after FroYo" is referring to.

Wasn't that the demonstration of web apps being allowed to use hardware features, like the compass etc
With that in mind, perhaps the difference is because those are not Android windows, but instead window on the webpage?

That does make sense. All of those actions were performed from the browser to show off the browser accessing the hardware directly.

it does seem like a new UI for gingerbread. Also, Froyo does not have the updated music player they showed in the demo.
I don't really understand why google would want to show off features from future updates.

To irritate us? Or, for all we know, is it's still in testing and 2.3 could come out before gingerbread.

I noticed that the top bar had the full date written out. Don't see anywhere in the settings to do this in froyo.
edit: nm.. it's in the notification bar when you pull it down. durr

that happens normally when you have your notification drawer pulled down

The images look just like the exact same visual style as the new Car Home app in Froyo, for whatever that's worth. It looks good.

OTOH, wasn't foryo supposed to have some kind of night-mode ? Cause that would pretty much be it.

Dunno about anything Froyo specific, but Navigation already has night mode?

Flash content runs terribly on Nexus S?

I know people are talking about this in the Quadrant scores topic, but I feel this is an issue big enough to have its own topic.
DJTaurus posted this video from youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xClO6d-S86w , briefly showing the browser at the 12:30 second mark , and watch how not only does the Nexus One load the page just as fast, but the lag on the scrolling on the Nexus S is TERRIBLE! The Nexus One scrolling is choppy with the flash on, but not nearly as bad as the Nexus S.
This is huge to me, I was really looking for a drastic improvement in the browser and flash content from the Nexus One. If this is really how bad it is, or even if it's the same as the Nexus One, that's a huge dealbreaker for me.

That is very alarming.

something with the flash content was screwing up the browser becuase you can easily see that the flash content is jumping all over the page.
Just another reason why i don't keep flash on unless i need it.
I don't think thats anything to do with the browser though, most likely an issue with flash and 2.3. Also one video, on one site is no reason to get too upset. there may be some settings in the browser that need to be changed or something. we simply have no idea why the lag is there but i seriously doubt it's hardware related.

Turn flash off. Uninstall it. Life is so much better.

Doesn't lag that bad on my Galaxy S with flash enabled and the newest JPU fw. :/

One major reason of the lag is the lack of Hardware Acceleration by default in the Android Browser.
Apparently this will be solved with Honeycomb.

Propably cause in phonedogs review the scrolling experience was smooth and fast.....

I loaded the site on my Vibrant and it was fine... just like any other website, not even as heavy as Engadget. I didn't see any flash content on the site (because I use AdFree) so the lag is purely from the flash-based ads... which are usually crappy and slow anyway. One of the ads must have been buggy, but the Nexus handled it fine so I dunno =(

It's AOSP. We'll figure it out

yup just as i said, Phonedog site, and just as smooth, if not smoother than 2.2/N1.
SO something screwed up in the OP's video. no idea what, but something.

Maybe he needs to reinstall flash. I watched few reviews for the phone, and non had problems with loading flash sites.

The site loads fine and scrolling is very smooth on my Gingerbread Nexus One.

Do you guys think this will be a market update or software update since the Nexus S is getting it in 2.3.4?
Maybe Samsung is waiting until then to give us official Gingerbread?

Looks to me like Google is only going to do it on 2.3 phones, with 2.3 already percolating, we Epic users shouldn't have to wait too long.
"Google Talk with video and voice chat will gradually roll out to Nexus S devices in the next few weeks as part of the Android 2.3.4 over-the-air update and will launch on other Android 2.3+ devices in the future," Google explained in a blog post, which also offers a screenshot and demo video.

Hopefully someone can do something with this . Google talk with video presumably integrates better with the android os than other alternatives, so it makes sense Google is integrating it into 2.3 instead of back supporting 2.2... that said, only the stock or "developer" android phones like nexus one and nexus s will be getting these right now...

Video calling framework has actually been built into Android since at least 2.1. If you check our hidden menus, there are all kinds of options for it, except the part that actually lets you make a video call.
I'd also wager that it'll pretty seamlessly interface with FaceTime since Gizmo5 pretty much did what FaceTime did using the same protocols and standards, except it was doing it back in '06.
