What to do with a G1? - G1 General

I've been doing a bit of digging tonight on the various roms for the G1 and just wondered what the most recommended, feature rich and pretty rom is and why?

my advice to you.
1. dont ask a question like this, you will more than likely get flamed pretty bad.
2. try them all...thats what i do, you will very quickly find one you like and meets your needs.

sorry...xda time out..........

You sir are absolutely correct. Well actually it wouldn't be flamin it would be more sarcastic responses. I'll behave on this until I get motivated. But yes your response is what the OP needs to do.

Why the suggestion of flaming, it's a straight forward question.
I'm sure there is a big difference between a stable and well established rom verses other buggy, unstable and unreliable roms.
I was merely looking for suggestions for me to look at, not a n00bs guide to being handheld through the install.

We just like having fun round here and might give a smart ass answer. But I would say cyanogen 4.0.4 is a stable and speedy build. But really it's one of those questions like what is you favorite movie. Everyone has there own opinions. So really just play around with the builds.

Thanks for the advice
I've been having a look at Cyanogen and watching a few videos to see what it looks like in between watching Sky News for the story about the boy in Colorado who was last seen getting in his Dad's balloon.
Anyway, I've also seen a video of the Motorola Cliq which seem to have been installed on the G1. Looks very nice except that some of the functionality doesn't appear to work but it is still a beta from what I can see so that's to be expected.
Just as an aside, I presume that a suitable codec to support streaming windows media audio is still no where in sight?

But actually there is an app called gmote (I believe thats the one) that allows you to stream music from computer to pc, if thats what your asking.

is it getting hot in here

I Gave Away My Dream

Spent the afternoon with my Grandkids yesterday and showed my new phone to my son - he was loving it and before I left, I took out my sim card and gave him the phone. I have a great kid - he's an adult now with kids of his own, a big mortgage, a stressful job and a high maintenence wife [I adore her, and she is worth every penny he spends on her.] .. It's rare that I see him giving himself expensive gifts. He does everything for his family and it reminds me a lot of my father .. besides, I love giving presents to him. When he was growing up I was a single parent and sometimes I couldn't give him what he wanted - Now I can.
That is on ehell of a admirable act!
It was a "feel good" moment for the both of us!

I am expecting an Xperia on Friday - I never really got to play with the Dream so if the Xperia doesn't thrill me, I have another phone that is allowed an upgrade so I might buy another.

and also this has been around for ages with a number of updates...can't find the post right now though

Those graphs are an outright lie. They are from Gizmodo! They love Apple.
Opera is the most popular mobile browser. Symbian has over 30,000 apps, not 1,000, winmo (not on the list you notice) has 35,000+. Most iPhone apps are only made to fix missing features to start with, and all but 150 or so of the rest are rubbish and pointless.

Ok now that we have that cleared up. Let all iPhone fanboys rejoice and bow their heads for the new creations. The greatest phone ever built now has cut and paste, mms and landscape keyboard. I bet we will never hear the end of this from the fanboys now! I can just picture fanboys everywhere bragging about it....lol

I don't know about that. I've had the HD for a week, and am seriously regretting getting rid of my iphone. I don't know if you've ever used an iphone for any length of time, but I don't really see how you can call it a horrible device

Skyfire Alpha

Hope I didn't overlook this...
Skyfire has started the alpha stage for Android devices! Sadly, I didn't have a chance to read the email from them until after the Alpha sign up had gotten closed.
Hopefully someone on here got into the alpha group and will be able to pass along the experience!
If it's anything like their WinMo version I'll pass. It was glitchy and made every web page look absolutely hideous.
Want to see what it does? Take a screen shot of a web page, then save it was a jpg with the compression turned up to max. This is what Skyfire's web pages look like when you're browsing:

If you're wanting a faster browser, use Opera Mini. It's in Beta, works pretty well, and doesn't butcher web pages.

I was trying to be sly about it...
And GldRush98:
I didn't experience that at all with Skyfire on any of my WM devices, and I have loaded it on a good 50+ customer's WM devices, from Snaps to TouchPro2's. It is the only browser that gives a truly full 100% internet experience on a mobile device. Opera does do some things better, like text wrap, but Skyfire, IMHO, is better overall.
Skyfire will be an instant 100% guaranteed way to watch Hulu on Android. I see no problems with that!
Your browser of choice for everything else, and Skyfire for flash content. Sounds good to me.
So does anyone have the.. ahem ahem.. apk for it..
Sounds pretty awesome from these descriptions..

I am thinking they only did the alpha sign up for it, and haven't actually sent it to anyone yet, firstly.
Second, if it is like Skyfire on WM, even if we get the .apk we might not be able to use it since it might make you setup a Skyfire account and sign in... early versions of the WM made you sign in before you could surf, the newer version do not.
As well, being alpha I and that it is server side processing, they will likely be pretty hardcore in preventing a leaked alpha .apk from causing them issues (I am guessing either forcing a sign in to use it, or by # each one so that when you start surfing, the servers says "hey, there are 3 thousand #5's, lets turn off service to any Anroid Skyfire browser with serial #5)
Skyfire ties all of their pre-release versions to phone IMEI's. Even if you get the APK, it will do you no good.
ya i was pretty bummed to see i missed it as well
did testing on the winmo version, it was decent, just that winmo sucks
cant wait to use it on android, hopefully they open another round of applicants in the near future and its not closed out within 10hrs

man i love this phone. its design is close to perfect IMO. this one is a keeper ever long after it is obsolete, simply because its a rare smartphone, is from google, and will be a nice little web tablet to keep around for nostalgia. its going in my permanent collection.
most phones i buy then sell after a few months and move onto the next thing, and i recoup about 50% to 75% of my money and use that to buy the next phone.
nice!!! the videos are really good.
OMG!
It was built for lasting!
i love it!

That could easily be 2.1, the development emulator that runs 2.1 looks exactly like that.

Does anyone think that ROM chefs aren't very innovative?

I posted this thread just because i am kinda disappointed with HD2 rom selection, as i am hardcore rom flasher. Don't get me wrong, i like all chefs and i'm not taking sides. If you don't like the thread don't flame me, but u can report it to be deleted if you wish. Otherwise read on
As comparison i took roms of my previous phone, Samsung Omnia. If you look at their thread http://www.modaco.com/category/368/i900-general-omnia-rom-discussion/ you can well enough see that after 2.5 years rom development is still kicking!
Every chef shows alot of dedication to rom, they build up their own interfaces, new looks etc. Every rom is unique, and i'm afraid we don't have this with HD2.
And yes, i know about dinik, but if there are more people using it then stock, it isn't as unique, don't u think...
In short summary, i'd just want to see some more young enthusiastic chefs (like sanjeev, maybe) so not every rom thread goes: ...sense 2016 CFC'd..GTX/Black..dinik iconset...
you can also post your experience or prove me wrong sorry to waste 3min of your life..
edit: will try to post some pictures to prove my point

Maybe you make your own ROM to share with us and give us a better choice?
Not sure i entireley agree with you.
Most chefs actually think about the user more than you probably think. So by providing a really fast, yet stock looking rom, you, the user, can add your own customisations that you deem necessary.
However, when you are talking about everybody using the same customisations, it's also down to the user. For example, im sure many of you use Dinik's icons/mods etc. So if it was built into the rom, it would be ready out of the box. No need to install all of the mods over and over again.
I dont think they're not being innovative, but infact providing what you need. I would be gutted if i spent a hell of a lot of time making a whole theme for my phone, only to realise people complain about it or just install other mods over it.

actually, i tried, but it turned out to be crap xD slow and laggy.
again, i'm not dissin' anyone, just saying! i like rom chefs a lot, and i know how much job gets into making a proper rom-as i said i tried and failed miserbly.
and i didn't mention i heavily customize almost every rom i try, unless it has something new to try. It's nice to build up your own config, but hey, sometimes it feels really nice to see someone stand out (as dinik did in beginning, and then GTX -and now mostly everyone likes these)
well i better shut up now i guess
