Holy Crap!! I have a feeling it will be an update though.
It will be on at launch because as of now Enclair does not support 4g.

and 1.5 didnt have support for cdma. but sprint hacked it in
Yeah, I saw an interview that mentioned native 4G support in Android coming with Froyo. That is probably what the dev guide says. It's not some secret info about release of Froyo on Evo.. If it was Sprint wouldn't have gone to so much trouble in creating custom 4G code to bridge the gap and teach devs how to work with it.

but it didnt run perfectly. that why they released 1.56.
It will prolly be an ota update 1h2012.
The bottom line of the comment code says "Until Type_WIMAX is supported you will need to hardcode the value 6."
If anything, what this means is that the EVO developer's guide is written for 2.1, not FroYo.
Now why would Sprint invest all the time and resources to teach developers how to develop 4G code on 2.1 if they're planning to release the phone with something else?
I Still think FroYo will be released on It. It'll add on to its exclusivity.

1.56 is the Software Version that was the update to software 1.29. The Firmware Version, however, was still 1.5. 1.56 basically fixed issues that slipped by Sprint/HTC. The CDMA phone functionality itself worked fine though.
This could explain why the EVO 4G wasn't running final software. I thought it was a little strange when HTC has the Desire and the Legend running android 2.1 and the new Sense UI with no issue.

Been looking around to see if anyone has been put 1.6 on the hero, but so far i haven't found anything. Just wondering if its currently even possible. I hate the senseui, so if stock 1.6 is available on cdma hero would be great to know. Thanks in advance.
Ill do ya one better. We dont have 1.6 but we almost have a fully working 2.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=593620
I tried and built a 1.6 AOSP and it crashes and burns. The system_server process sigbus with a null pointer exception and crash/loops on my Sprint Hero when it tries to boot up.
Honestly, 1.6 and 2.0 seems "closer together", 1.5 to 1.6 is a much bigger jump. I think Google kinda messed up the versioning there. 1.6 should've been 2.0, and 2.0 be 2.1

And thanks for the quick answer. Looks like im gonna have to wait for HTC. They should just make a working rom for cdma hero's just running 1.6 for those of us who could care less about sense ui.

Well HTC/Sprint is currently working on 2.1 for the Hero. So I seriously doubt that will happen. But you can always turn off Sense or build you own custom rom without Sense...
I could use any of the ones currently available , but from what ive been told, nothing will be completely compatible just yet. HTC just needs to get in gear, or hire some of the guys here lol. Also heard they got 2.1 running on droid and its amazing, so i guess im just patiently waiting....

What HTC needs to do is just release the source for our phone & all our problems will be solved.
That would be a great idea. We could have it done by Christmas lol.

That seems reliable...
So did Toyota
In the past the rumors have rarely been reliable in regards to timing, so I wont be holding my breath. The Eclair roms that are available in the developers section work very well for now
That's definitely the most trustworthy-looking 2.x rumor so far. However, I won't believe it until it's officially confirmed by T-Mobile USA.
What timing! Just after finally rooting and installing CyanogenMod, an official OTA for 2.0 might be right around the corner. I wonder what would be considered preferred by most XDA users...a good modded 1.6 ROM like CM, or an offical T-Mobile 2.0 ROM.
The good modded 1.6 roms have a lot of 2.0 in them. Really besides aesthetics and the hella cool live wallpapers there are not a lot of changes that are noticeable. Speed wise there doesnt seem to be any issues either- they seem about equal. Might as well wait unless your into testing out roms and such. I am, so I have to have the latest daily
If this comes out I might actually Un-Root and Force Update.

It will be on here faster than you can unroot and force update! No need to worry about unrooting so you can get the newest update, there will be a version within hours of the OTA's starting on XDA, and if history is anything to go by, they will probably have it on here a couple days early.

Are you referring to a CyanogenMod build with 2.0, or simply a regular 2.0 dump put out by Cyanogen? I'm keeping my fingers crossed for CM with 2.0!!!

CM is not a good rom. It is bloated and slow.
Official rom is also not good. It lacks some basic necessities, like wired tether and apps-to-sd.
The preferred choice should be an AOSP 2.something build with minor kernel customizations, and using the drivers that will finally be available from the official rom.
I would stay with my un-rooted G1 if there was a simple app to let me put my apps on the SD.

Don't remember this being the case when Donut was released. At least not the stable versions.
try manups 2.1 rom.
if you can do with out hd youtube and videorecording its faster than cyanogens latest. it's actually the first rom i've stuck with more than a day that isn't cyanogens.
Just to let you guys know the G2 is the Hero in Europe.
So if that post is true. The G1 and the Hero will be getting 2.0/2.1 and 2.0/2.1 sense by the end of january.
HTC Hero update to Android 2.1 pegged for mid-March
By Chris Ziegler posted Feb 9th 2010 5:35PM
We've known for ages that HTC's been working on yanking its custom-skinned Hero off of Cupcake's rusty frame, but so far, the only way to drop Android 2.0 or 2.1 on your phone has been to cheat, root, and load a custom or leaked ROM in place of the official first-party firmware. If you're too straightedge for that, though, keep the faith -- your binary isn't too far off. PR released today indicates that we can expect the Hero to get an Android 2.1 update with Sense in "mid March" according to HTC's Benelux team, and it'll feature a new Friend Stream widget that aggregates user updates across services (presumably a nod to Blur), tweaked Exchange support, and a handful of other goodies. This isn't necessarily indicative of when Hero versions in other regions (Sprint's version, for instance) will pick it up, but it's a solid start.

blah wtf!!!. Its good dont get me wrong but still sketch on the sprint update
Ugh, I'm sick of waiting. T-Mobile here I come.
And thats from HTC. So we can expect an additional wait time from Sprint doing their crappy app tweaks. Maybe they will finally get Sprint tv working.
This isn't necessarily indicative of when Hero versions in other regions (Sprint's version, for instance) will pick it up, but it's a solid start.
I heard from an HTC rep that for Sprint it will be Feb 22.

Along the same lines...If sprint were to post their update after the HTC official drop does that matter? Can't this be flashed directly to our phones (with out the sprint apps obviously)?

I think Sprint has to handle getting their network settings configured, so the Hero knows what to connect to.
I just talk to an HTC rep today and they said the same thing.
I sure hope it comes soon since the Droid is getting theirs this week according to this website

So if what the HTC reps told the two above posters is correct (not holding my breath), would it be better to go ahead and go with HTC's 2.1 or wait until one of our devs cooks one up?
By the way that this forum is looking we should have a pretty good looking 2.1 here pretty soon anyway. Just wondering.

As soon as the HTC update drops, our devs will have it re-released for rooted users.. Probably within a day.
In short, if it drops, I'd wait at least 24 hours prior to installing the authentic version, because it'll close the loophole you used to root in the first place.
will we be able to go back?
Say we flash the rom the day it comes out...im dieing to try it... will we be able to use the recovery tools to unflash or will it somehow kill our recovery tools?

From my experience with the PSP, DO NOT UPDATE YOUR PHONE! Give it a few days to make sure root is still possible or doable.
I'd wait until a dev cooks up a rooted version so you don't lose root.

EPIC on the march update but I want it now but who doesnt? I know I cant wait to un&*^& my market for my gmail account since i upped to a 2.0 AOSP rom signed in and went back to 1.5 forgetting about that from my android-vogue days and how it basically upgrades your market account then some apps purely wont be able to be found until you go back to that ver.
after being given a free upgrade from orange i have decided for my HERO to go

lol you don't really know what you are talking about, do you?
hero is promised to get the 2.1 update, questions is when. eclair is the "nickname" of android 2.1, it has nothing to do with the nexus. and the nexus rom will never work on the hero.
Where is the promise? Can you link to an official statement (not from some blog, rumor spreading tech-site) from HTC? HTC once had semi-promises on their twitter... but they have since deleted their messages there.
Even the source of the announcement that it comes in June is obscure and I don't consider it an official statement.
I actually don't believe that there will be an upgrade anymore.

Assuming that the Desire gets fully rooted, and once HTC releases the Desire kernel source, I'd imagine that porting Nexus One ROMs onto a Desire would be relatively trivial since so much of the hardware is shared.

So with T-Mobile releasing Froyo for Magic, is there an official Froyo update for ADP2 (Google Ion) from Google or HTC? Should one be expected?
Post removed by me
If you mean semi-officialy, there will soon. As you've deduced, the Mt3G is a rebranded magic, just like your ION. We're just waiting for someone to dump the ROM, so it can be packaged up ready to flash. You'll need root for that of course.
The Froyo source code has been out for a few months, so you could have installed Froyo ages ago. I'm currently using a community build on my magic, but I'm going to flash Tmo's build just to see if they've changed anything.
Personally I don't see Google or HTC releasing Froyo officially fo the ION. If they were going to they would have done ages ago. So if you want 2.2 you're going to have to flash a custom ROM.

Oh, I've been running CM6 on it for a while, I was wondering about update coming from either Google and/or HTC (just as I have posted).
PS. My Ion came with Eng SPL and rooted -- there was no need to do anything to flash any of the community ROMs.

CM6 doesn't " run like crap ", there is some things that we would like for it to have but 2.2 to g1's and Mytouch's was completely out of reach and Cyanogen gave it to us and remember that it's only 6.0, there will be more releases. Partition your SD Card the right way and maybe it wouldn't run like crap for you... maybe. I'm not sayin' I'm just sayin'.
And lets not forget Cyan gave us 2.1 and T-mobile NEVER acknowledged it.

Each to their own, I guess. In my experience it's slow and straight-up AOSP is way faster. Partition how? I don't need ext, swap is a con, really.
Ok, its one thing to stand up for CM6 another to blindly nut hug.
CM6 sucked....
Not only did i ditch CM6 for Biffmod, i ditched all root for 1.6 and im loving it.
CM6 could never keep a single thing opened.
Yes, i had my card paritioned right, yes i had custom MTD partitions for massive internal memory, yes i used firerats swap patch for CM6 and swap option in Biffmod, NO nothing would stay open.
