Just want to share my experience of 'best' charging method that can maximize the battery life of my Nexus one.
Firstly, let me introduce my equip:
- Machine: Nexus one
- Rom: FRF91 Stock, Deodexed, rooted, busybox... (Geo411m)
- Kernel: intersectRaven's 2.6.35_AVS-925mV_CFS_20100802_1056.zip
- Control: SetCPU, Interactive: 245-960Mhz when on, and 245-245 when screen off
The key method of obtaining max. battery life is the 'GOLDEN' time from 100% drop down to 99%. Once the battery shows dropping from 100 to 99%, the dropping speed is quite stably fast onwards
So, how to retain 100% longer before dropping to 99%? Below are the steps that really work for me:
1) Charge the phone to green light, some where between 90% and 100% (say: 95%)
2) Disconnect USB charging cable
3) Turn off the phone
4) Connect USB charging cable and charge the phone, it should show orange light
5) Set a timer, remember to *ONLY charge the phone for around 20-25mins*
6) The concept is NOT to charge the phone until you get green light. In order words, you need to charge the phone from 95% for 20-25mins where the light is kept ORANGE with the phone turned off!!!
7) After 20-25mins, disconnect USB cable and power on your nexus phone
8) You are done and the battery should last longer before dropping to 99%
9) Time in step (5) depends, you need to trial-&-error
For my experience, I normally charge the phone before I sleep and disconnect the charger. In the morning when I get up, it usually shows around 95% of battery. Then, I power off the phone and charge it. And then I take breakfast, bla bla bla ~ and after around 20mins, disconnect the charger and go to work. The battery can retain 100% for around 30mins of continuous web browsing, facebooking... and when I reach my office, sometimes, the battery still shows 100% !!!
So, above is my experience of how to maximize the 100% retaining time.
Please feel free to try and share with us whether it really works for you

I don't play games on my phone -- that will change when Angry Birds is released for Android -- nor do I watch movies, and I don't really do too much web browsing. Sometimes I listen to music, but not often.
I can go 12-14 hours of normal use (mostly Twitter and text messaging) and that will put me around 45-50%. I'm never somewhere that I can't charge the phone if I need to; USB at work, regular charge at home, and a charger in the car.
All of these tips and tricks for extending battery life are neat, but why bother?
^ Well looking at your usage, and the plenty charging points, of course you dont care. However, some ppl browse a lot, play games, so every last inch of battery life means something.
I just keep spare batteries in my pockets =D

Screwing up the battery meter does not get you more battery life, period, and I suspect your shenanigans here is doing that. The battery has a set capacity, it's not going to charge more than that.
The Nexus One and a lot of other modern phones with modern batteries DO NOT trickle charge, they charge to 100% and STOP charging. When the phone drops to a certain limit, it charges more. Repeat as long as it's on the charger. This is why you might see it "drop a few percent" when you pull the charger.

At 1378mAh right now, didn't get a reading straight after first reboot unfortunately.
I'm also trialing autorun killer. Disabled a free services I don't use.. seemingly increased startup time.

This is placebo. In the OP you even say after it finally drops to 99% it drops fast after that. It's because the phone wasn't at 100% all that time. It was giving you a false reading from messing with the charging pattern.
The best way I've found to charge the phone is to delete the battery stats, turn the phone off, and charge it until it's green. I get a great day of battery life with the phone that way.

Totally agree...I just charge when & where necessary and never worry about it! Don't have the time and it seems to last long enough for me to work & play
I had already discovered this and was looking for a fool proof way but I guess you beat me to it. Happens when you traveling alot. For me, I have gotten over 1500mAh more than once..some times 100% would last me half a day too. So it's worth it, my question is whether or not this is bad for your battery? or long term battery life.

I'm fairly sure that the Milliampere-hour (mAh) is the capacity of the battery (the amount of energy it will store). How can you get "over 1500mAh" on a 1400 mAh battery? None of you are making any sense what so ever. You can't get more energy out of a battery by charging it a specific way. If I gave you a bucket that held 10lbs of sand and you filled it with 8lbs of sand and waited a few minutes then started filling the rest slowly, it wont hold more sand. This is nothing more than a placebo effect. The only way to get more time from a battery is to reduce the amount of consumption. The only way to do that is to use your phone less or make your hardware use the battery less such as undervolting your CPU. I tried for the longest time to explain to people that underclocking your CPU does absolutely nothing. If you're still running at the same voltage you're still consuming the same amount of power.
Stop messing around with the battery and the battery stats.
Could someone please use the phone until it goes off in the evening? What percentage is shown on the batteryicon when it goes off? 20% or what?

Actually it's not a good idea to fully discharge the phone often.

I have been using ultimate juice defender and battery life has doubled with usual usage. Maybe this can be considered as an alternative to longer battery life

there are alot of mixed opinions on how to properly train a brand new battery, I'm talking right out the box 5 mins ago. Some are saying let the new battery drain and then start the charging/discharging and some are saying charge it right out of the box.
Anybody have a definite answer that has worked for them? Battery life has been an issue for me in the past and i wanna get this one right. thanks guys!
I charge it right out the box then do a full discharge and charge it back up again.
I think I'm a moderate / heavy user and I still get quite good battery life. Averaging around 20 hours before I need to charge.

It's Lithium Ion. You don't need to train it.
Android however needs to figure out how long it can run before the battery is dead. Charge it til it's full and run it down. Do that a few times and the OS should get a pretty good idea on where the battery is sitting.

Wasn't there a special HTC-approved charging strategy that supposedly improves battery life dramatically? Was that ever debunked as BS?

you are not a heavy user then. I got about 12 hours with 2G only selected for most of the day. switched to HSPA. hspa+ 8megs killlllz my battery. I went from 70% to about 30 within a few hours just sitting in HSPA+ area and browsing and checking emails and facebooking. at about 12:30 that night i was at about 15%

You need to delete batterystats.bin from system if you get inaccurate readings. And yes, lithium ion batteries need no training. That was the older type nickel-whatever...

So, you're basically saying we need to train the OS, not the battery, am I right?
I always gave the battery a full charge and then let it go down to 0 and finally power down before re-charging. After doing that a few times I just did whatever as far as charging goes.
I also used to charge a lot here and there through out the day. I know only charge when it's low and I know I am doing a full charge. Not sure if it makes a difference with battery health, but I feel like I notice a difference.

Lithium Ion batteries should not have complete discharge cycles. Keep it above 40% when you can. Charge it regularly.

well I did the Evo trick and... i'm at 12 hours off the charge and 34%... that's with web browsing, texting, gtalk, phone calls, etc.
I think the GSM Auto (PRL) has helped a bit as my "time without a signal" went from 44% to 0%.
There are too many different answers from discharge at half, charge to full then discharge, and not let it discharge below 40%.
I think we should all test and log the different techniques.
So far
44 hours with light use
21 hours with normal use
15 hours with heavy use
and what I did was discharge at half and fully charge, also I dont let it shut down by itself and turn it off at 1 %.

This has helped improve my battery life significantly.
I have also noticed my signal is more stable.
I was on WCDMA Preferred before.

Okay, I read the post and did the evo trick, from my understand it stops your phone from constantly looking for a network.
while I made the changes, am I suppose to have "use only 2G network" check or unchecked? Also my connection changes from E to H all the time with this trick, is that suppose to happen because from my understanding it should stop it from switching networks?
I just tried the GSM Auto (PRL) evo trick.. now to wait and see if this helps at all..

I have two Arias, one freshly rooted with the rooted stock ROM and one running attn1's FR008 flashed straight from the freshly rooted state. The only additional app installed is BattStatt, so I can easily monitor battery state. One battery is new, with only a few cycles (over about a week) and one battery is older, purchased in August.
Over the next few nights I will be doing an experiment. Both phones will be on, same settings for GPS, WiFi, Data, and Bluetooth. They will only have the displays set on about every hour or so to check battery states. The following night, the test will be done again, with the batteries swapped. I will then run the test again with WiFi on, with intermittant connections due to my work environment.
I expect to update this thread after each night's experiment.
The first night is an exception, I'm comparing my normal ROM (loaded with apps, widgets, and running Tasker) My first night has been interesting...one running freshly rooted is still 100% after 1.5 hours. The FR008 with many apps is down to 89% (note that this is the older battery). Perhaps at the 4 hour mark, I shall swap them. It would be nice to do this with 2 new batteries, but I have what I have.
This is being done to lay rest to the claim that one ROM gives better battery life over another. Seems like it is going to be conclusive if the first night is any indication. Perhaps we'll see what app is the culprit? (Widgets??Tasker??)

No phone calls on either. Just to be fair, since one is without a sim card, both of them have data turned off.
At the 4 hour mark, the original rooted ROM is still at 100% and the FR008 with mucho is at 82%. I have swapped batteries.
This gave me an opportunity to race bootups. The stock ROM booted up and was usable before the FR008 (with UOT cooked startup bootup animation) even got to the dancing droid. Makes me want to undo that to see if that is slowing down the bootup.
I am eager to do this full swing with clean ROMs tomorrow. I shall make a backup of the FR008 ROM then go back to the aria_shipped_rooted_signed.zip
(found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=783508&highlight=Original+ROM). I will then flash FR008, adding only a widget for easy monitoring of battery levels, BattStatt.
This experiment is going to have to wait. Part 2 of last night's experiment indicated that my older battery drains fast in either device/ROM. The article linked in this thread is good reading. Thanks for that info.

I have two Aria phones - both the same age
one is stock 2.1
one is FR008
I set them both up the same - running HTC Sense -
I set the phones down (while I slept) for 8 hours
the stock phone drained 10%
the FR008 phone drained 43%
Did it twice
I know its not a 'real' test , but it does make you go hrmmmmmmmm.
If only you had a 3rd phone to throw CM into the mix! lol

You set the phone down for 8 hours and your phone drained 57% battery on idle for FR008? I find that very hard to believe because I have set my phone down over night and it drained 2% of my battery if even that. FR008 has shown the best battery life to me over the entire FR series. As of right now, my battery has been off charger for 6 hours, and Ive used the internet, wifi, and light texting with my battery at 100% still.
Edit: Im also using SetCPU...I dont know how much of a difference that would make, but there should be a difference. Try using SetCPU

you dont have to believe me - just telling you exactly what I have experienced
It wasnt just one night - I tested this for 3 nights straight before I made this post -
if you are running all those things for 6 hours and still show 100% - I would question that

I said I have been off the charger for 6 hours. Not necessarily using the phone for 6 hours. I browsed the web for around half an hour and sent about 30 texts since Ive been off the charger. I just dont see how its possible for your phone to drain 57% while youre not using it. What happens when you start using it?

let me try this - i am currently at 100% -
its 8:17 AM PST
I will let it sit 'idle' on my desk at work - off charge.
in one hour - i estimate that it will have dropped 2% now (new ROM)

ok, just about an hour on FR008 - and now my BattStat is reporting . . . .
96% !?!
Both times - the phone was just left alone - on my desk - not being charge - not being moved at all - no touchy.....
Both were fully wiped prior to flashing
Both had LPP + DV + 3 widgets (mClock, Exteneded Controls, BattStat)
Both had turned off News/Stock sync
Both had 2 emails (Exchange, IMAP) set up
though not truely scientific - but nevertheless
HK Version showing < 1% drop
FR008 vers showing < 5% drop
dont know what to say - these are my results.

Wow... to use your words "I just don't see how it's possible" that you are still at 100% after sending 30 texts and 30 minutes of web browsing. In my own experience with my 2 month old Aria, even on the stock Aria, that sounds unbelievable. Either that or your battery calibration is way off.
My HTC ARIA with FR008 drain 2% in 8 hours.
Wifi off.
GPS off.
PLANE MODE ON
Set CPU when the screen is off 200-400 MHz
Set CPU when the screen is off 200-800 MHz and work very very smooth with Live Wallpapers.
Average CPU Usage <1%
Plane mode on????
With all those things off , why not just power down

Hey everybody, Im new to the android scene, just got my vibrant less than a month ago. Before that I had an Iphone 3g. So far I like the phone but the battery life is horrible. When I surf the internet on wifi or 3g I noticed that I use like 3-5% in a matter of 5 mins. Is this normal? I consider myself to be a light-moderate user and have been getting and average of 12 hours or so on my vibrant. Also if it makes any difference when my phone is idle or being used my temperature runs around the high 80's low 90's but when being charged it drops to the low 80's or high 70's. What is going on? How can I get more 20 hours on my phone? With the iphone I used to get an easy 15 hours and still have like 40-50% remaining.

When I first got the vibrant, it had pretty bad battery life, I would lose like 25% while sleeping 8-10 hrs. So light usage would be like a day. Slowly I started to get longer battery life (2 days on light usage). Recently I could get up to like 3.5 days on real light usage. After updating to JI6, max I can get now is like 3 days. I didn't really do much and I tripled my battery life by just giving it time.
Thanks burntrat I guess ill be patient. And I must mention that I am running stock.i was just worried because my battery temperature gets colder when charging and warmer when idle or running.

Hey burntrat or anybody, has your battery ever acted sort of schizophrenic on you? I mean one day I leave it on standby and its drains like 1% in 7-10 hours another day I leave it on standby and it drains 18% in about 4 hours. Whats going on?

My battery has been draining inconsistently lately. It drains faster in the 50-100% level. Under 50%, it feels like it drains slower while doing the same stuff.

Juice defender doesnt work for me, but ill have to try superpower, anyways I just feel that its weird that without anything changing, my battery drains differently on different days. Burntrat I think thats normal for every phone, the last 50% always seem to drain slower.

if your phone is draining a lot during standby or sleeping. There may be a rogue app out there or an app that didnt shut down properly. (I guess that would mean a rogue app)

I had the same problem, stock task manger doesn't show all of the apps.
Check ur services, go to settings apps manage apps running applications.
Or instead of that I brought the advanced task killer back to check on things
@aamir123 and burntrat: maybe you guys need to calibrate your battery? Also the stock rom usually has a lot of bloatware running in the background. Flashing a custom rom oughta do the trick.

Try this. Download the system panel app from the market. You can set it to monitor your system and it will chart what applications are running and how much they are using the cpu. If you find you have some unnecessary bloatware running in the background download titanium backup and freeze those apps.

There are a lot of different ways mentioned in different forums. Try this:
Let your battery drain all the way to the point when it turns off by itself.
Charge it while its off until its full.
Unplug it, turn the phone on, then plug it in again.
After it reaches 100, unplug the charger and turn your phone off.
Once off, plug it in and let the charging complete.
Once complete, unplug it and turn the phone on. When everything has loaded, turn the phone off (note: no charging involved in this step.)
After it turns off, charge it one last time until 100%. After this, go into recovery and clear battery info (or cache, I forget). There you go
Oh, and its better if you don't download too many apps that monitor battery usage, cpu etc. cuz they will contribute to the battery consumption.

It isn't a good idea to let your battery drain all the way to zero since it is lithium ion. I think skipping that part and just charging it when it's on to full, then off to full, then on to full, then off to full and then wiping battery stats would suffice. Also you need to have clockwork recovery to wipe battery stats.

When the phone turns off by itself, the battery still has some juice left in it to prevent it from losing the ability to charge, if that's what you meant by not a good idea cuz its lithium ion. If thats not what you meant, then please explain why.

Agreed. In my case, I barely lasted 12 hours on moderate use with any of the JI6 2.1 ROMS (Eugene's, Bionix, Fusion, etc). I think after I updated to 2.2, all of the ROMS have been giving me 18+ hours on moderate-heavy use no matter what modem or kernel I use.
So where is the "unique" problem?

This is true.
Try this, it helPed, me get like 10 more hours.
Charge till 100.
Shut down
Plug in usb until the green battery shows up and says completed our something.
Reboot
Charge for5 minutes.
Reboot
Done.

Just created this thread so we could all have our battery life info in once place and keep the dev thread from getting cluttered.
Please post the following info:
1. Standard or Fully Loaded version
2. Total hours unplugged and percentage
3. Details (percentage and time) for each service
4. And any pertinent details such as apps used (juice defender), or extended batterys
Also, please don't forget to calibrate, airplane bug fix, and kill that drm.
Ex. (will edit with final time)
1. Loaded
2. Total - 8h50m @66%
3.
Display - 55m 78%
Cell standby - 8h50m 9%
Wifi - 6h40m 7%
Phone idle - 7h54m 4%
Voice - 1m 3%
4. Juice defender, setcpu @ 100/1000
Ideally we want to wait for a full drain to post stats but this is just an example. Thx guys looking forward to seeing what you all are getting.
Just installed it will get back to you in a couple of days after recalibrating my battery.
Btw, i hear Juice defender does more harm than good...

Hm I'll have to test with it on and off. I use it because I get spotty service in my house and don't want it searching for signal all the time.

Interesting. I think you are right, we are essentialy minimizing out idle drain to a certain extent. However, even activily using my phone it drans slower than stock with this rom. My next run ill try and use it all day to see what I get.

Battery drain
Hello everyone, noob here. I can't post in the development forum on this but it pertains to the battery and charge to a degree. Maybe someone here can help me in some sort of way.
I rooted and flashed the SyndicateROM Frozen yesterday, used it all day and never a hiccup. This thing is lightning fast and props to the dev's but here is the only issue I found. This morning after waking up I noticed the phone was stuck on the ACS android startup icon. I plugged in to charge last night and it's like it froze the phone when it reached full charge. Anyone else experience this?

I think I read in the dev thread that it's a known problem with the kernel? Or maybe it was the rom... or CWM? anyways the dev's know about it. Just don't charge your phone when it's off.
Battery for me seems to be a lot better than stock, but I'm always charging here and there... today I'll let it run without charging for 4-5 hours and I'll report back. Using a lot of setCPU profiles.

Are you charging it with the power OFF? Lots of people were posting issues of freezing when charging with the battery off --- and I think the probs are related to CWM -- not the ROM. Only charge while the phone is on -- and you should not see problems.
I put on to charge with the power on last night because I had set the alarm to wake me up and it never did so that is when I noticed it. I don't think I've ever charged it with the power off, even when it was stock.
Maybe the dev's will come up with a fix sometime in the future. As for now, I'm happy as hell 'cause this ROM is great.

Did this just happen once? If it doesn't happen over and over, I wouldn't consider it a bug. I have only heard of issues like you describe with the power off.
I'm looking at 12 hours on ACS Frozen on average. I haven't even gotten close to the rumored 30 hours with "heavy use" I think my use has been moderate. My battery use log only only lists display 98% and cell standby 2%. This confuses me. I do more than sit there staring at my homescreen.

How you use your phone makes a difference and while 30h is possible, I don't see it happening with heavy use unless that is little display use. Below is my most recent "heavy use" run. Basically tried to use the phone all day, xda app, browsing, mainly wifi, 0% screen brightness.
1. Loaded
2. 8h7m @5%

You did that with a standard battery? I haven't seen anyone post more than 4 hours of display "time on". That's impressive. Maybe I should try 0% brightness. I have mine at 25%. Are you on "Conservative" on SetCPU?

The 98% means that 98% of your battery use is coming from the screen. Click on where is says 98% and look at see what the use details are (the "time on"). Generally, most people are getting less than 4 hours of display time on with a single charge. The explanation is that some people stretch 4 hours of display time over 30 hours of use. In other words, the people who are getting 30 hours of use only have their screen on 10 - 15% of the time (or less).

Yes, using the standard battery. Setcpu is on conservative. I always use 0% as it looks great (kick it up tp 25-50% outside). I think I was able to get that long of display use due to minimizing cpu usage and other services. All I did is browse in dolphin and use xda app. And, that was pretty much all on wifi. Only change was the hour I was at the dog park on 3g and I recorded a 5 min video.
I bet my gaming session tomorrow will kick it down to ~4 hours
With phone calls, texting, and music player, I average between 16-18hrs. If I start to web browse or watch videos then about 8-12hrs. Very impressed with this ROM to say the least.

4. standard battery, auto brightness, overclocked to 1.2, wifi on when I was at home and 3g at work.
I calibrated the day after froyo dropped. I didn't do the airplane thing and I thought drm was not in this rom. So in other words I didn't do any fancy stuff.
I will note today I tried 1ghz (which is undervolted) with 4G on all day (I have a repeter on my roof at work) and after 14.5 hours I am at 30% with about the same concistancy of usage as yesterday.
Edit: I only have 1 gmail syncing right now. We will see if I get these magical numbers when I put my other 2 gmail accounts and my 3 actice sync exchange accounts on Monday.

I'm getting mixed battery life. The first day on the rom/kernel I dropped down to 79% in 9 hours, with medium use (no web browsing). I was getting 1% drop every 1-2hrs, and thought it was amazing. Today I tried to be really conservative and didn't use it at all and it dropped 4-5% every hour WHILE IDLE.
Anyone else experiencing the same problem? It seems to happen after a reboot to be honest.
NOTE: If I disable data network mode, battery life is amazing,
I'm not sure about my battery life. I charge mine differently than the average person though. I charge it at work and leave it in my desk, because I use it a lot during my lunch break or whenever I get any downtime. When I get home it's usually at about 70%, and it remains unplugged until the next day. I used to have to charge it at home and at work.
