Still no samsung apps.com in the US? workaround? - Omnia II General

Really like my Omnia II but have been waiting impatiently for the samsungapps.com store to become available in the US (like I need more apps!). I can browse it but not buy/download the cool freebies. Is there a way to get these apps in the meantime?
I've installed as Great Britain on my laptop and can download files but they aren't cab files and I can't figure out a way to install them on my phone if I move them to the other computer I have the phone partnered with.
Didn't want to sync the phone through Kies on the laptop in case it screwed everything up. Anybody tried this or figured out a workaround as we wait for Samsung to open to the US market (10 countries later and counting)
Thanks,
megawatson.

have you tried downloading the program KIES from samsung, it worked but when I plug in my phone to the program it cant find my phone...any one else have luck
maybe with windows XP...

Macs & More

I have an X1i (believe it's a UK release because I got it from the Middle East), and I don't have a PC. I have a Mac
I'm currently using The Missing Sync to sync contacts and what not, but there appears to be a lot more I could be doing with ROMs if I had a PC running. For example, I am unable to update my ROM with the Service Update tool because there just isn't one for the Mac.
Any tips/ideas on this? All the ROMs out there are in .EXE format. Do I just copy them to the X1 and run them? Or do I really HAVE to have a PC?

I posted a thread a while ago regarding just this, whether other Mac users are using WinMo phones as well. Regarding ROM's, I still have no clue. You could try virtual software if you have an Intel Mac, I'm on a PPC Powermac so that's not an option for me.
Turns out there just aren't many and using a PC is the best solution.
Windows Mobile just isn't Mac friendly.
it's not just a mac thing it's also not very linux, 64bit xp, 64bit vista, 64bit win7, 32bit vista, 32bit win7 friendly
Bugger.
It's not very nice having to bum someone's PC and run hacks off it. Hmmmm...
I'm going to experiment with Missing Sync, see how far it'll take me.
I can run Bootstrap if I must, though I just totally despise windows. I'm looking for any way to get it off my xperia - everything I CAN do appears to be skinning, nothing more. Not even Android can be set to hard boot - yet...
Yes, don't ask...the xperia was a gift. If I had my way, it would've been anything NOT running WM.

I'm just uninstalling it. It crashed sometimes and doesn't do any useful tasks more than Windows Mobile Device Center.

I think New PC Studio is worse, if it's even possible. It's not possible to make it work in all computers. It installs a big pile of futile drivers and other stuff. When you uninstall the program, it doesn't uninstall everything. What a pile of **** ;-) That progam occassionally worked on one of my four computers. Although I did everything according to the instructions, it managed to temporarily make one of my previous phones a brick when updating the phone. No company should publish program that buggy.

've tried WMDC without success... cant connect thru usb, cant connect thru BT... any clue? (otherwise i'll be sticked to kies for the rest of my life)
Any luck founding alternative to kies?

did you guys install the correct driver?
Did you know, you can not have both Android SDK (ADB) drivers installed, and KIES drivers installed at the same time?
you can only use KIES driver, or ADB drivers, if you have installed ADB drivers KIES will NOT work
if you uninstall / replace the ADB drivers with KIES drivers, then it works flawlessly.
#Fido
Last time I checked it was not possible to connect via bluetooth via Kies. That really bugs me, because my Nokia Symbian phones have always had a crappy UI, but the SW Suite is sweet IMO. Writing / sending SMS via BT, answering calls, notification on calls. I could do this via the Nokia Phone Suite connected by bluetooth - I really miss those features in Kies.
Kies, doesn't have any close to what you are looking for in the Nokia phone suite.
Kies is just like a glorified version of a sync software + itunes wanna be

[Q] MMS Not working... Setup APN manually

Hey guys, got WP7 on my HD2 today and I was reading that you had to manually set your APN to gain 3G. I set mine up (epc.tmobile.com for TMOUS) and I have 3G, yet MMS still wont work! Have searched and searched and it seems some people's just works randomly. Halp!
try download from the market in the HTC section the connection setup... and let it configure the phone for tmobile... I don't know if it will fix the problem but theres no harm in trying
dont you have to go through that long fix to use the market....? right now i cant do that because the SDK tools wont install. says there is an issue installing .net framework 4 something or other.... :/ looks like im going back to stock 6.5 and android for now

If you cant side load the connection setup since you dont have the dev tools installed and don't have it activated with Live... No other way..
Normally it would work with the APN set correctly since theres no other options like mms ip and so on... Enjoy Android.. Lets see if in the future this issue gets fixed
Well... I guess my heart is set that I am so in love with WP7, I am going to keep trying. My issue was the .NET framework. When I try to install the SDK it says that the .NET Framework 4 blah blah couldn't install. Mind you I manually installed the .NF4 beforehand, uninstalling and reinstalling now, will report back. Until then, anyone had this problem then fixed it?

LOL. Got rid of my gaming rig... making dude with an AMD XP 2600+ 1GB Ram, and a GeForce 6800GS. get the job done, but would crumble on W7. I finally got past that point and installed the SDK. Now Zune effed up... reinstalling hoping to fix.
Hope everything ends up working for you... Aslong as Zune loads up and connects to the phone .. All you got to do is go into the market or Music while plugged in and sideloading should work
Hey i got W7 running on an Old Gateway with AMD Athlon 1400 1G Ram and Radeon 9550.. Aero and all runs fine.. Have it stored away just incase

Really? How does W7 run on that PC?
Now back on topic.... lol. So, I got Zune to load and my device connects correctly. Now chevron isn't working and apparently there is a 1% chance of anyone getting it to work on XP. Yet, I was just informed that most roms come pre-unlocked so I wont need chevron!
Now that my device is hooked up, how do I sideload? I have the connection setup ready to go.

If the ROM you have says it comes activated and unlocked with the registry changes already cooked then all you have to do is load up Zune and connect the phone.. then on the phone go to Music & Videos or the Market so the Sync Complete Screen comes up then just use TOM XAP installer or a hacked version of the Developer Application Deployment Program to sideload and .xap you want (connection setup)....
Off topic.. I just started up the setup DVD and it installed W7 on it and right from the start everything except the Audio worked and an update fixed it

What cooked rom are you using? I'd like a preunlocked one... probably make things easier.
had the same issues with t-mobile uk. downloaded the htc conntection wizard and ran that and it worked fine. also try sending a picture message, as sometimes that seems to fix the issue (i had to do this on android).
as for the chevron hacks etc, you are better off using a pre-unlocked rom. look in the wp7 development section of this forum and u will find most roms will cook it in. if u have that then your next challenge will be the windows live id for marketplace access. US have chat support for windows phone 7, but in the UK i had to phone them and just got given a code
your PC will run windows 7 fine, windows 7 needs less resources than vista, i have some very old PCs running windows 7 and they run fine, the only issues i have come across is aero not working, which i can live without.
you may find that it is a worthwhile upgrade, as not only with the wp7 dev tools be much easier to install/use on windows 7, but any updates to them are most likely to only be available to windows 7, plus XP is in extended support, meaning that updates will only be rolled out if they are critical, and most newer software will carry the designed for windows 7 logo.

Glad to hear everything started to work out...
This is how i sideload apps
Once Zune regognizes the phone and syncs succesfully while still pluged in... on the phone make sure the backlite is set so it wont turn off.. if it turns off it breaks the connection.... Once you have that set go into the market on the phone or Music & Videos... Once you go into one of those apps it will say that you are connected and it will sync briefly and say sync complete... while still in that sync complete screen start up the Application Deployment and browse to the connection setup .xap and deploy it.. If the connection Setup is signed correctly (official App) it should successfully send it to the phone and load up right away.. if not it should be in the programs list
Hmm.. alright thanks man. Ill definitely give it a shot tomorrow.

Turn lockscreen timer to never in settings.
Open Zune. Wait for sync complete. Minimize Zune.

[Q] Which is Faster on the Shift? Windows XP - Windows 7 - Windows Vista - Windows 8

Hi, I am about to get an HTC Shift here soon.
I was wondering which OS to put on the device.
I need to know which OS will run the smoothest. (Videos, gaming, not freezing up, etc.).
I know that there are some people here that know the answer. I'd really appreciate it if any of you can help me out here. Thanks guys!
Also, which would be the fastest version? Home, Tablet, Professional, etc.?

Choose windows 7, Windows xp just doesn't bring what you want due to the lack of good touch input, windows vista is slow. Windows 7 and XP performance are almost the same..
Messing around a bit 7 is best. 8 is beta and weird, XP is old and out of date for touch and such, Vista is a lost cause.
I got a 2gb RAM module for $95 off ebay by trading in my 1gb module. Shop around, you can find great deals.
Soon I am going to load Ubuntu 12.04 on it, I think in the long run of things it might work best, I'll post my findings.
Thanks for your response man. I think I found the correct drivers for Windows 7.
It was a pack I found here on XDA. It's too bad... 99% of the links for the HTC Shift Drivers are all bad.
Actually. I have a question. Would you happen to know if I install Windows 7, will the Windows Mobile part still be there? And also, do you think you could link me to the correct thread where you can use the HTC Shift as a phone?
That would be extremely helpful.

Don't download, Just download the official "Vista" drivers from the HTC Site, and then search for the instructions "how to install windows 7 HTC Shift" you'll get a topic with all the steps you should take. But you do have to download a new wlan driver.
Thanks for your response Armazia. I'll try to look around for the Vista Drivers and the instruction for Windows 7. I tried to look earlier, but I couldn't find it for some reason. I'll give it a shot now.
I couldn't find anything on HTC's site. I found this though. Will this work? - http://driver-pro.com/related/english/hardware-drivers/?a=12226&hit=1

I think its not worth it, since it only has a 800 mhz processor.. You won't really benefit of 2 gb.
I find windows 8 very good, and very snappy. Try it! Its very nice on the huge touch screen.
Best regards
I like the speed and quickness on windows 8. If you disable windows defender and file indexing (search), it runs very quickly. I use the stardock windows 8 menu as well. Has anyone gotten the WM side to be recognized on Windows 8. I was able to get it working on Vista and Windows 7 but having trouble with 8. Anyone have any good incite?
Does anybody know if it is still possible to download the Developer Preview of Windows 8? Microsoft only has links to the Consumer Preview. (Will this still work via the installation guide found here?)
I just ordered a Shift from the 1saleaday/Ben's Outlet for $199. Eagerly awaiting my new gadget!
Success, With a little work you can get the WM part to be visible in Windows 8 and can transfer files.
Once you use the usbtool, on the windows side you might need to repair the network connection (leave wifi off) and it works.
You can also use the SIM card to surf with windows 8 as well.

Activate legitimate Windows 8 Pro

Hi,
I had a legitimate Windows 7, and recently I bought a legitimate Windows 8 Pro upgrade. Al went fine until yesterday when my SSD disk crashed.
I changed hard disk, re download from official microsoft site the Windows 8 Pro, put it on a USB and reinstalled windows 8.
Now the Windows 8 does not activate since it is saying that it is an upgrade and not a clean install version.
Wht are my option now?
Losing one day of reinstalling Windows 7 and on top Windows 8 upgrade is out of the questions, unless Microsoft PAYS ME all the time it make me lose.
Thanks for any advice
Sadly, I don't think you can activate Windows 8 with a upgrade key, when you do a clean install. I'm staying away from the upgrade and going with the full version due to this. I wish I had something more to say, but if you want Windows 8, you'll have to reinstall Windows 7 and then perform the upgrade to activate with that key.

Dumb me having given my money to microsoft
Worst case install win7 does not even need to be activated. Then install Win8.
What you really need is just a Win8 installer that doesn't care about upgrade or not. The key will work with any disc that installs Win8 Pro.

Installing Windows 7 then Windows 8 is hardly a full days work, more like 5 minutes of work punctuated by 30 minutes worth of waiting. Also, Microsoft doesn't owe you anything if you failed to follow the terms of their licenses and can't get the software to work.
Also, note that you can do a clean install by booting off of the drive, there just has to be another copy of Windows present on the system (I took the HDD out of my laptop and put it in to get past this, didn't touch the HDD on my laptop and it let it activate)
Thanks for letting me know how absurd the terms of the license of the company microshot are.
Probably you are right I should have waisted another 4 or 5 hours reading their entire terms of license, eventually asking a lawyer his legal opinion, before understanding that is not worth to buy their product.
Now I know.

Not when you don't have a windoz 7 cd, since it came pre-installed on my new laptop last year
Ah, yes, I forgot that coming across those rare Windows 7 discs is next to impossible and takes months of prepping and searching.
Also, you could have just googled it instead of reading the entire ToS, it's not like the cause to your issue isn't common knowledge or anything.
Your best route at this point is going to be either installing the release preview (and upgrading from that), finding the recovery discs that came with your laptop, or borrowing a friends recovery discs. None of which take a considerable amount of time, I might add.

If the answer is: go find a windows 7 disc somewhere (in my house there is none), google to find out the legalities of microshot, download a 2Gbyte file from the internet, , install the preview, then install the windows 8 pro upgrade and HOPE AND PRAY that all get well
and if something goes bad, maybe you would add that I should have googled for the solution to the "uncommon" problem.
No thanks, I send the computer to a repair shop. I hope they install me a cracked version. Or I may just switch to Apple.
Good bye.
Torrent the W8 release preview iso, upgrade from that.
Legal, easy.

Echoing what everyone else says. You're mad because of a hardware fault and you are blaming Microsoft for something that you consciously chose. The upgrade disc only works if you have a copy of Windows 7 Available, because it doesn't include some core files that are standard. If you install Windows 8 using the Release Candidate disc through MSDN/Whatever, and then input your upgrade keys, you should be fine.
This thread doesn't belong in this subforum anyway, as it neither pertains to Development, or Hacking.

Actually, all Windows 8 versions have the same core files, there's just this one file that makes them operate/install differently according to their given version (Core, Pro, VL, etc.) by using a specific product key. That's why you can still perform a clean install using an upgrade disc, but only certain keys that are capable of activating a clean install would work.
Now back to the problem. You can either install Windows 7 and upgrade to Windows 8, or try install Windows 8 again via clean install and add Media Center for free at Microsoft website. I'm not sure if it requires you an activated Windows 8 to add features or not. So yeah just trying to help.

Why would that help? The media center key is for downloading media center, it won't activate 8.

Hi,
I had a legitimate Windows 7, and recently I bought a legitimate Windows 8 Pro upgrade.

I came across the same and fixed by following this it worked for me
Windows 8 users who noticed that the operating system can’t be activated after the installation may want to try the following workaround that worked to activate when installing Windows 8 using an upgrade on a clean PC.
Open regedit by pressing Windows-q, entering regedit and selecting the result from the list of hits.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE/
Change MediaBootInstall from 1 to 0
Go back to the start screen and enter cmd there.
Right-click Command Prompt and select to run it as administrator.
Type slmgr /rearm on the command line and hit enter.
Reboot Windows now.
Run the activation utility afterwards, enter your product key to activate Windows.
Cheers !

I am mad because I PAID for a legitimate Windows 7 operating system on a new Laptop that I paid for. No windows 7 CD came with the laptop. And I fully blame Macro**** for this.
This is a fully responsibility of Micro****: they know there are millions of user without Windows 7 CD and many of them are buying the upgrade to Windows 8 (fool us). And when something happens you have to bring it to a repair center, or lose incredible amount of time, surfing forums, asking questions all over, downloading Gigabytes of software and so on.
Yes, Microsoft is a horrible software house.
Other option Macrosh*t can do is say from the BEGINNING that your version is an upgrade and cannot be installed, instead of letting you install all the OS and then tell you. What a piece of **** company.

Umm, I was just TRYING to help dumbass. Because I've done that before and it did activate because it sees it as a VALID PRODUCT KEY.

This is a little confusing. If you hate and you've hated Microsoft then why did you buy a brand new Windows 7 laptop and then willingly bought an upgrade to Windows 8. Hey seems like Macrosh*t still got what they wanted. Lol cheers

I have an unactivated computer, I just tried it, "Before you can add features, you need to activate first".
I appreciate you were trying to help, but you don't know what you're talking about, go home.

Your just plain stupid, and not logical. The time you've waited posting nonsense could have been used to download an windows 7 iso, installed it and upgraded to WIN8 and be done with it.
This happened to me. If you do an upgrade of windows 8 over the windows 8 install you have now you will be good to go =D
