Please listen up!
When the 2.1 is released;
Do not update your phone with the RUU from htc website or OTA because it will most likely lock up your bootloader and make you unable to downgrade, root and it will replace/delete you custom recovery boot menu and therefore UNABLE TO ROOT,DOWNGRADE AND FLASH ANY CUSTOM ROM!
I recommend waiting for a 2.1 based villain version or MODACO 4
YOU'VE BEEN WARNED; YOUR PHONE MAY BE "WRECKED"
if you goto modaco htc hero forum you'll find a similar thread with more information.

Thanks for pointing out my little 'article' over on VillainROM.co.uk
As we approach the end of the week, and the point where something interesting might appear at any time, please make sure everyone knows not to flash an RUU.
To re-iterate what I said over there, if you get access to the official RUU in your country or from your provider, please let one of the admins or moderators on VillainROM.co.uk know (you can identify us with the red and green nametags, or by clicking 'the team' at the bottom of the home page. We will then provide you with temporary login details to FTP the file to our server, and the update will be re-released within hours (probably within minutes of uploading)
Cheers, and don't go RUU-ing
Please make it a stickie.

I assume modaco 4 will be released shortly after the official 2.1 RUU, but it will always be well.. alpha and betas before the "real" modaco 4 is finished and we also have to wait until Teknologist releases his tweaked kernel to get the real modaco as we know from 3.2
Thank you!.... I was planning on installing the official one as soon as it is available under the assumption I could just flash a custom over the top of it once they had been tweaked.
You've saved me some heartache.
Assumption is definitely the mother of all f'ups.
Thanx again.

Pass the message on, folks...
Tweeted via. my user below. Feel free to add me and RT to android users etc. Spread the word, and hopefully we won't even need to find a way to root the new update

think about this: you are htc. you don't want people to root their phones. you get a major upgrade out there, and you know about the methods how to crack the security of the phone. would you fix them or not?
If somebody have SPL 1.76.2007 installed and wish to try official 2.1 form HTC you can do it in the following way:
1. Get rom.zip from 2.1 RRU
2. Unpack it on you hard disk
3. Make new archive HEROIMG.zip with following files from rom.zip:
- android-info.txt
- splash1_Hero_320x480.nb0
- boot.img
- radio.img
- system.img
- userdata.img
DO NOT INCLUDE recovery file (recovery.img) and SPL file (with name like hboot_7200A_1.76.0007_090804.nb0) into HEROIMG.zip.
4. Flash HEROIMG.zip
In this case you will able to root, downgrade or install custom rom.
FYI:
VillainROM will really come into life when we have the official 2.1 update.
But on topic - he's right. Remember those that used the official update last time and had to use the goldcard method to flash recovery?
We don't want that all over again.
Agreed: Sticky.

well surely you would have to sign it?
Making a ROM out of an RUU is a piece of piss
As soon as we have it, it's a battle of the upload speeds.
There will be a lot of ROMs out there, all based on the same build; too similar to differentiate.

yes, but it is still lacking an update-script, and contains only .img files. from what i know that is not suitable for the recovery... it might work with the unlocked bootloader, that is correct, but for that you need to flash every partition with the corresponding image...

I have given link to the Modaco page as there are rooted stock ROMs there, could be useful.

any other way to flash the official rom beside the way you show me before, actually i bought from 2nd hands, not me flash the hero. so maybe you can help me the easiest way...sorry to bother.
If you really want the easiest way, download and install the official RUU from HTCs website. However, this will make it harder for you to apply a custom ROM in the future.

Dave

If that's really what you want:
Make sure you have the usb drivers installed on your PC. Easiest way is probably to install HTC Sync, following HTC's instructions, assuming you don't have it set up already. Then just connect your phone to your PC via USB, download the RUU which will be an executable & double click on it. Can't get much simpler than that

This thread is not for the SPRINT HERO,.... This is for the GSM HTC HERO,.... You could seriously damage your phone using these instructions.
You need to start in the CDMA section.

Actually, it depends on what he is trying to do! If he's trying to install the RUU (from this thread) for the Sprint Hero, it should be fine.

It has already been rooted. Search around the thread. Let's not have multiple people create multiple packages as it'll confuse more users. I'll review the existing ones when I'm free and I'll post the one that works best on the first post. Or, you can be a tester. Use tenfar's quick rooter if you're already on 2.1, if not, try anon2122's update.zip or Eddie1506's 2.1 update.zip.

Hi suman_pal78, you should grab the OTA link from your log. Give me that link and I'll remove the recovery.img for you, then you can flash it through your custom recovery as an update.zip. After that, you'll be able to get your OTA2 notification, then grab the link from your log as well, and pass that to me. I'll work the magic.

I can't find what's wrong here. Everything looks OK and comparing to some of the previous ROMS, I can't see any difference which would cause something like this.
Here are the India 2.1 update zips for one of the great developers to root.
I did flash OTA1 after removing the recovery.img file from the zip and resigning the zip using droid explorer. I tried the same with OTA2 but phone wouldn't boot after that... Back to stock 1.5 till someone can help me out with this
OTA 1 http://download.brahmafamily.com/OTA_Hero_HTC_Asia_India_2.73.720.90-2.73.720.5_releaseykksu5if6nls1b8w.zip 4441 kb

A root version of this or maybe a quick root update.zip would really help us in India - thanks in advance to anyone who can do this...
Combining both updates
A request
Devs would it be possible to combine the above two updates and create a rooted rom that can be flashed over any other rom on HTC Hero?
I guess in order to flash the above two updates you need to have HTC_Rom_2.73.720.5 as your current build and i have a custom rom installed.
Will really appreciate it if one of the Devs can do the above..

These are stock zips grabbed from the HTC server and are the same as what you would get over the OTA.
These would replace your recovery image - so please be careful when you flash these as you would loose your custom recovery...
Do you have a custom recovery image installed in your phone? (You can find out by powering up pressing both home and power keys at the same time...). In case you do, I can send you the OTA 1 image with the recovery image removed which flashes fine on my original stock nandroid backup. Once you flash this you will get the update notification for OTA 2 - or download the zip from the earlier post and flash - this would give you a stock rom with stock recovery unrooted - should be ok to go for warranty repairs with that...
Cheers

Using's Dr.Death FOTA fetcher (found here), I've compiled a list of all the shipped roms and their respective OTA updates as of 21/02/2011
I've writen an script that checks all known RUU and OTA version, if it finds an OTA not known, it will be marked as FOUND NEW VERSION ###
WARNINGS: DO NOT FLASH THOSE OVER A ROOTED ROM OR YOU'LL LOSE IT!
All Froyo (3.x) updates includes an new HBOOT 1.01 and can't be S-OFF
All versions above 1.x can't be rooted, if you update, you'll have to downgrade the phone
OTA updates are patches only and can be used exclusively for the rom version it was built for.

No idea, it's the letter after the rom version, I thought I'll leave it, could it be R for Radio? I'll go check the content of those OTA and see if there's any similarity and/or difference.
For download, no problem, I can have them uploaded to my server.

I'd suggest you not update to 2.05 because of the SMS sorting bug unless you use a 3rd party messaging app, when you open a conversation, it starts at the top, oldest first.
If you do still want 2.05, you can grab the HTC asia WWE 1.31.707.2, which then gives you OTA update 1.31.707.3 and then 2.05.707.1
Or one of the Vodafone 1.31.x or 1.32.x
But the best right now is 2.03, I'd just grab 2.03 stock rooted or flash the RUU, in which case you'll loose root and have a harder time to get it back if you choose too
2.03 stock, rooted

but i am using asia_india rom ... for that 1.32 rom doesnt have any ota update ...
Hello everyone,
I'm new here. Haven't done to my Legend anything yet but am considering and I'll read more threads about it on this very good forum. Would like to have Froyo and wifi tethering because of my android tablet.
However, I just thought to mention (maybe this is not the place; if so, I'm sorry) that I run 2.05.720.1 which is not on the list. If you want it and if I can, I wouldn't mind grabbing it and posting it here/sending it to Kwen or whoever will update the list. I haven't noticed any bugs or problems with this build apart from the obvious that it's not Froyo. That's the only reason why I haven't gone cyanogen yet.
Cheers,
Steve

Once you know the file name (posted in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1181833 ) it's easy to work out the direct Google link.
So is the radio.img gotta be ripped out still?

@applefanboylol,
If you have RA, or Clockwork installed, it will not work because if you attempt to boot into recovery(because you replaced the boot.img file with a different recovery system other than stock) the bootloader will take you to the alternate recovery. You will have to remove RA, or Clockwork. To answer your question the update overwrites the existing kernel with a different one.

Do not flash Netarchy nor any other kernel until Android 2.3.5 kernel version is released. I'm sure Netarchy will release 2.3.5 kernel version once the source code is released for public.
Does this update remove root/CWM recovery? It's easy enough to get back, but I'm just double checking before I do anything stupid.
not sure why but the directions state to hold power and vol up after you boot into recovery before the exclamation mark and it just refuses to give me the option to select my update.zip......... blllaahhhhh
edit:: Ok so you have to hit Power first then hold it down when you hit vol up.. That worked perfect for me.

Hopefully that saves looking through the other huge thread for the link, and/or people rushing off to mirror this file unnecessarily.

Working: OTA updates on a rooted device with an unlocked bootloader
Ok, finally i've managed to do an OTA update on a rooted device with unlocked bootloader, using the following steps:
Step 1: flash back the stock recovery (can be found in the OTA update rar file, in the firmware package).
Step 2: install back the missing APK files, lost during unlocking the bootloader (can be found here: http://sharesend.com/ulxcsxa9)
Step 3: Perform the OTA update normally
Step 4: Flash back the custom recovery using fastboot
Step 5: Go to the custom recovery en press reboot system, in my case CWM asked me to Fix the root and i did.
Notice that there will be no loss of any data, everything should be working fine after following these steps. Just flash back the custom recovery and regain root acces (if CWM won't ask to do it for you) by using rooting tools or rootkeeper.
I think you mean recovery instead of bootloader in steps 1, 4, and 5.

I don't think this belongs in development

This is nothing new but it's a good guide anyway and if you made OTA updates work with a custom recovery etc then that would be excellent news.
Hey it seems like the files in the OP don't exist or sharesend hates me, if someone could reupload them that would be awesome.

Any link for the Stock kernel and recovery?
Thanks
You mean this works with custom ROM, or should I flash back stock rom ? (I only find OTA for 2.24.401.1)
Edit : I've lost my nandroid backup of stock rom trying unsuccessfully to change firmware...
Just wondering if #3 is absolutely required? Cuz I think most custom ROM has at least some of these APK cooked-in.

Checked on ARDH. Some of them are missing...
Okay now my main question is, Since taking the OTA is possible on a stock custom Rom, if I have the 1.27.531.11 firmware update (tmobile) and I wanted to flash the 1.27.531.7 Rom, and take the .8 OTA, would it restore the .8 1.44 hboot that wasn't modified and allow me to S-Off? I got as far as trying to take the OTA but it didn't work because I forgot to flash the missing apk's.

OTA's only work if you are completely stock, if you change some system file the update will fail, so on custom roms official otas will never work

Yes, I know that, that's why I'm searching for a stock 2.24.401.1 rom to install on my device. I found a deodexed one (very slow download - about half an hour for 3%) but don't know if it fits ?
can I install an OTA ROM (I downloaded one but I'm afraid to make a mistake)
I searched a lot and I am asking in several threads, and still no answer...

I think you want something else than otas but you thinks otas are the solution to your problem, so you are focussing on getting otas to work but what do you really want fixed?
Anyway deodexed roms don't get otas either only stock odexed roms

Thank you for the second part of your answer. for the first part, I have a good running device with ARDH 13.3 and no problem,
I want OTA updates only for firmware update as I don't have s-off. so with ARDH it is impossible. I need a stock ROM that matches my device ( 2.24.401.1 and CID HTC_102) where can I get that?

If you want otas, ask Mike why he choses not to do them, else just put up with checking the thread and downloading+installing a new version every couple of weeks. If you want OTAs on ARHD Mike needs to let them happen, no amount of tinkering on your part, even with s-off, will achieve this

Uh, I think the poster is referring to official OTAs with firmware updates, not OTA updates to ARHD
