Why does video on 2.1 suck compared to 1.5?

I've tried re-encoding the movies and messing with the settings, but I always end up with much crappier video than when it played on 1.5. I don't remember 1.5 having the banding issues in the darker colors, but in 2.1 it's really quite horrible. Has anyone found a solution to this? Even youtube videos look like garbage. I thought the final release would possibly fix this, but it hasn't.

They have the 2.1 source now, so expect fixes in the camera since thats everyone's problem lol maybe they can implement 1.5 camera in the 2.1 rom who knows.

Devs had 2.1 source before, and have had for a long time. What devs do NOT have is source for the HTC .29 kernel (yet).

It's not really the camera I'm talking about... I probably should have been clear. lol Sorry, I was just a little disappointed..
I have some movies that I ripped from my dvd collection that I watch once in a while on my phone. On 1.5, I never noticed any "Banding" issues. The video would be smooth and look really good. But since I updated to 2.1 (custom roms with leaks) the video just looks like crap, especially if it's darker. You can see pixelated areas and severe banding. Especially in Total Recall and The Thing from Another Planet (1950s one). The darker areas are just crappy looking. Tons of banding issues and pixelation.

I personally have not noticed this. I cannot imagine that it has to do with your conversion software/format, but I use videora without any issues. It's made for an iPhone but works perfectly for our heros since they have the same resolution. Might be worth a look.

Iphone has A 1.3 MP Camera the Hero has 5 MP Camera they dont have the same resolution. The hero is capable of downgrading to a 1.3 resolution.

Screen resolution and camera resolution are two completely different things.

I've used both videora and Handbrake. I mostly have used Handbrake, but I went as far as downloading a crap ton of others to try them out and nothing fixed it, no matter how many times I tweaked the settings.
Do any of you watch movies? Not ones made by the camera on the phone, I'm talking about real movies from DVDs.

The screen resolution on the hero to me wouldn't be all too great to watch movies from. I think the EVO might be better for that among other things.

It worked fine on 1.5. Screen resolution has nothing to do with it.

Who needs iPad "Netflix" app when we have....

yeah i like this too, all we need now is the official netflix instant stream app then i can do something while on the toilet, or on a bus, hell the options are limitless.

Cool but I don't think anyone was excited about queue management in the iPad app. People just want to stream movies on their device.

My biggest fear for streaming is that it doesn't buffer enough. Being on 3G, we are on a connection that's just barely fast enough to stream basic video. If I pause it for 10 mins, it better be buffering that whole time.

Judging from the enthusiasm, I'm gonna guess the OP doesn't.

I didn't know it streamed movies... I guess its cool over wifi but with the new data changes and people that didn't lock into the unlimited plan...netflix is pretty much useless.

You know, except for when you're streaming movies over wifi or on your unlimited dataplan (which everyone who had an AT&T unlimited data plan a week ago still has), yeah - netflix would be entirely useless. But at least you could adjust your queue!

Speaking of netflix on the toilet.... Who else has seen the new Samsung Android phone with the pico projector? I could totally see myself killing an hour on the toilet at work projecting the image on to the stall door. Yay for timers on the bathroom lights!

ehhh... I agree watching a movie over 3G is pretty pointless... and those new data plans are a joke for streaming media like that... it just makes me happy I didn't pay extra for the 3G version of the iPad, especially when I am hardly ever away from wifi. Even in that kind of a situation I'll remain content with my wifi hotspot Nexus to feed the iPad if it needs it.
but having netflix laying in bed or while visiting my parents who don't have cable is pretty cool.

Netflix app on iPad streams movies. (So what if it's wifi only, 3G is coming soon, again so what about data restrictions, at least they'll have it).
Netflix app coming on iPhone soon, also wifi and 3G streaming soon.
Now, on Android, to stream Netflix......... still waiting for even a rumor....

anyone have a chance to load videos on your epic? I took the16gb card home the other day, put clash of the titans and super troopers on it. The screen KILLS the evo screen! SO awesome.

I've seen another post where the OP claimed the EPIC screen wasn't glass...which I can't imagine.
Could you confirm one way or the other?

The current Super AMOLED is glass..the next one coming in 2011 will be indestructible thin film.

I wish I had the chance to play with mine, but we're supposed to have 6 reps in store and we only have 2. So between 12 hour shifts and lines out the door, not much time playing with the device, sadly.

Its supposed to support a huge amount of video formats... everything from avi to mkv
I'm really excited about that.

If the internals are anything like the other Galaxy S's, it should play all those formats, NATIVELY. The Galaxy S lines are one of the most well rounded when it comes to media file playback. Samsung's wide support of these media dates back to their Yepp mp3 player days and all with fantastic linear audio quality output.

All of this is thanks to mDNSE - mobile Digital Natural Sound Engine chip. This is the mobile version of the DNSE chip found on their TVs, DVD and other home theater systems.

Has anyone confirmed the video codec support? Since the Epic isn't shipping with the same version of TW as the others, it could be missing some of the codec support found in them.

One of the things holding me back is the screen actually. I tried a Vibrant and noticed the smaller screen, same thing applies to the Epic

while the screen is a little smaller than the evo, the screen display is soo vivid. I took the 16gb micro SD card home, d/l'ed clash of the titans 720P .mkv and hot tub time machine, (and put super troopers .avi) and it looks AMAZING. It kills the evo screen. Lighter than the evo. Battery life is awesome on it. I got my coworkers in the rolodex and we just go in the back and text each other from it all day. Love love love this phone. When my boss told me I would be the advocate for this device, I was depressed for about a week or so because I have had nothing but HTC since my mogul, and the moment was not that great of a phone (and the intercept isnt anything worthwhile either... and if I had a dollar for everytime someone complained about a samsung inSTINKt!!! lol). Now, I dont feel bad at all cheating on the HTC brand. This phone is epic! If I find some fatal flaw after it being in my posession after launch.... well, I still have my full upgrade to get the evo, or whatever the next 4g phone will be...

I was honestly surprised as well. I took some video at a concert (extremely loud) and it did a good job of maintaining sound quality and the video quality was pretty great as well. The biggest problem was me being able to hold the damn thing steady... but that was a situation/personal issue, not the phone/camera itself lol.

To begin with I was dissappointed with the camera bit recently have take. Some really great pics. Better than the inspire. And im Starting to like the screen colors too. There is also quite a lot you can do post pic taking in the viewer app.

The camera IS pretty good. A lot of people seem to think it sucks...but from all I've seen by using it, its actually kinda nice.

Yea but quicktime is what sucks because it trys to cache the whole 1.2gb before playing

I think it is awesomely bad. I was playing around with my Dad's Atrix and all of the pics seem a little blurry. I thought there might be a lens cover from the factory and looking at it, it certainly doesn't seem as clear as it should be. I tried picking at it but it wasn't going anywhere. Anyone discover a lens cover on their phones?

Downloaded the video... looks great! I'm impressed. Haven't taken video with mine yet, but yours looks great even though (I'm sure) the lighting couldn't have been that good in that arena. Very nice!

Some one should start a "Pictures taken using my Atrix" thread :x that way I can compare to what I have

There might be an issue with the adhesive use for the lens cover. Bring it in to AT&T and see about getting a replacement. My pics look clear.

Make sure you wipe down the lens. It picks up dirt and fingerprints so easily.
No really. Every time I want to take a pic, I take a look at the lens window and it's dirty.

Minjin - there is no cover on the phone out of the box.

Are you sure the videos you're trying to watch have the 1440p option available in the first place? Not a lot of videos do at the moment.

Can you link me to it so I can test it on my Note 4 too and get back to you? Because the videos I've tried give me the 1440p option. But bare in mind, you need to have a pretty good connection to be able to stream in such resolution.

Yes, I update YouTube every time there's an update on the Play Store.
Both of those videos you sent me play in 1440p just fine. It may just be your connection. YouTube won't stream in high quality unless it detects a high speed connection.

Well I have 152meg connection both of those videos play fine on my computer

I have same problem
And I have 140 mb fibre optic broadband I don't think it's related to internet speed

Me too, so it's not that either.
I honestly have no idea, but I suspect it's a problem on Google's side, not the phone's.

Try tubemate. It gives every available resolution in every possible connection n device. BTW you can use 3rd party players with tubemate too which is a good thing if you use MX player. Download the tubemate apk. There's no playstore version. My YouTube doesn't even give more than 480p. It's just device oriented. It will not give you higher res than your phone's display res.

Sign out of youtube, in app manager, force stop youtube, clear cache and data. Sign in to youtube. You may need to fo it few time untill 1440 option become avaiable. Sometimes helps restarting phone before signing in to youtube.
