Hi,
i have previously had this problem aswell.
recently i purchased hd2 tmobile USA version.
and i had alot of contacts on outlook, so i synced it with hd2.
after that i started making changes to my contacts on the phone like adding facebook tags etc.
then when i resynced most of the contacts got deleted.
now the only setting i see in windows media device center is
"replace items on device" or "replace items on desktop"
what i want to do is sync both ways meaning add contacts from outlook to hd2 then if i make changes or add facebook tags on hd2, then resync i want the information to get updated on outlook (pc) aswell but instead what happens is outlook recognized info that doesnt match and deletes it on the phone and all data gets lost.
please let me know is it possible.
thanks for helping out.
it should already sync both ways (it does on mine anyway, and always has on all phones with activesync)
the part about "replace items on device" or "replace items on desktop" should only come into play when there is a conflict (eg you edit a contact on your phone, edit the same contact differently on your pc), only then 'should' the 'replace items on..' kick in and decide.
I suggest you clear your sync partnership and start over, making sure you have the latest wmdc installed.

i think youre right. what i did was added some contacts frm pc to phone and some i had on my phone. also some contacts i had added from pc to phone that i updated on my phone like facebook etc so when i synced everyrhing got messed up.
i also hve another question. i have two .pst files with contacts on them. is there any way i can put a few contacts from one file to another?
thanks alot.
ya you can. in outlook go file - import - import from personal file.(I forget the exact wording, I'm afk atm.) then browse to the pst.
file -> manage datafiles -> add, select your pst, it will be loaded and appear as a separate folder, then you can copy whatever you want between them.

Arse! - I did this once myself but i run 2 phones so i just bluetoothed them back over... Surely there must be a way to restore them via active stink... :?
yeah, like if i could like type them into word and import them or something similar to that, would be fine
If a problem or conflict occurs when an item is synchronized, it will be marked as unresolved in ActiveSync on the PC and on your device. You can resolve items at your convenience.
ActiveSync may not be able to synchronize an item for many different reasons. For example, if you are trying to access your Outlook information and the server is unavailable, your Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, or E-mail items cannot be synchronized.
A conflict could also occur because an item has been changed on both your device and your PC. For example, if you change a contact's information on your device, and without synchronizing make another change for the same contact on your PC, the two versions will conflict with each other the next time you synchronize. You can change settings to select the device or the PC as the default version, and ActiveSync will automatically replace the information on the other computer.
To avoid resolving conflicts manually, you can set your conflict resolution settings so that ActiveSync always uses the version on your device or PC (or on Exchange Server if you synchronize directly).
On the Tools menu, click Options.
Select a computer with which you are synchronizing (a PC or Exchange Server).
Click Settings.
Under If there is a conflict, select a setting.

found this in the AS help file - any use?
hmm wonder if i added contacts via outlook express that would add em
Added to last post...
Just sync'd my SPV - if you follow the instructions in the last part of the post, providing your contacts were sync'd - it should replace them
Seems to be like talking to a brick wall, but he already said he didn't HAVE his contacts backed up to PC, and therefore CAN'T restore them at all
chris: Yeah my advice would be add them in Outlook and then sync with the device. should work fine
using activesyn 4.2 i still cannot get my outlook contacts to sync with my 838pro. some files sync, some do not; email YES; contacts, favorites NO.
what's my next move?
could i have problem with the computer, a tablet pc running outlook 2003?
very frustrated
thanks

CONTACTS NAMES HAVE TO BE COMPLETED CORRECTLY. COPY ALL OF YOUR CONTACTS, TO A SUB FOLDER OR ALTERNATIVE FOLDER. DELETE FROM YOUR OUTLOOK ENTIRELY ALLOW THE SYNC TO DELETE FROM YOUR PPC.
THEN COPY, ONE BY ONE BACK, ALLOW EACH TO SYNC, AND CHECK. THEN YOU WILL FIND THOSE THAT SYNC, THOSE THAT DONT, AND START TO IDENTIFY THE ERRORS.
ONCE CONTACTS HAVE SYNC'D, YOU CAN THEN CHOOSE WHICH YOU DONT WANT SYNC'D BY CATEGORIES, PERHAPS YOU HAVE INADVERTANTELY DESELECTED SOME CATEGORIES.
some files sync, some do not;
FILES, IE USING YOUR DESKTOP SHORT CUT, OR DO YOU MEAN DATABASE ENTRIES?
email YES; contacts, favorites NO.
SOME FAVOURITES ARE JUST A PAIN. RELOCATE ALL THE ITEMS ON YOUR DEVICE TO AN ALTERNATIVE LOCATION \WINDOWS\FAVORITES.
DE SELECT THE SYNC FAVORITES. ONCE YOUR PPC FOLDER IS EMPTY, ALSO WIND BACK, OR REDUCE THE AMOUNT YOUR SYNCING FROM YOUR PC.
THEN SELECTIVELY, WHILST CONNECTED COPY 1 BY 1 ACROSS. I FOUND THAT SOME LINKS, OR SOME SYNC'S JUST DIDNT WORK. WHICH STOPPED ALL FROM SYNC'ING.
IT IS GENERALLY RECOMMENDED THAT FAVORITES ARE CONTROLLED BY ONE DEVICE OR THE OTHER, NOT USING COMBINATIONS.... THIS WAS AN OLD 2003 ISSUE, NO SURE IF RESOLVED.
what's my next move?
SYSTEMATIC AND METHODICAL TESTING... IF ALL ELSE FAILS,
1. REMOVE THE PARTNERSHIP, AND RE-PAIR
2. HARD RESET THE DEVICE....
could i have problem with the computer, a tablet pc running outlook 2003?
HIGHLY UNLIKELY TO RELATE TO THE TABLET PC STYLE.
Sorry for the shouting... I was just trying to delineate my comments from yours.
Thanks - I am going to start my trial and error now; will report back after 875 contacts are organized properly! Cheers...
i cant check the checkbox for contacts in syncing using activesync 4.2
what are the possible reasons?
Contacts do not sync - with activsync
Hi
I also have the same problem. I have a t-mobile MDA vario II and normal windows xp computer. I had no problems synching contacts with my orange spv c500 - easy as pie. Now with my vario ii it just refuses I have tried:
1. deleting the partnership a few times
2. hard resetting the device
Neither work.
In fact after the first time the partnership is set up, I found that the tick box to select to synch the contacts was greyed out. This is really frustrating. I take the point above that some contacts work and others might not, but why should this work perfectly well with the SPV and not the MDA?
Many thanks for any suggestions
Having just got an O2 XDA Orbit I had exactly the same problem with my Outlook Contacts not being synched.
I discovered that if I edited the contacts in Outlook in anyway (eg. adding and deleting a space) then the contact was then synched to my phone.
I have never had any problems on my XDAII, Jasjar, nor Jasjam... So not sure where your problems are coming from.
I have multiple sync systems working left right and centre and all appear to be working as I would expect. All I can think of is that you are using incorrect activesync, or incorrect outlook versions, or as above, just edit a couple. Alternatively, follow my previous post, ie create a sub folder, move all of your contacts to the subfolder. Delete all the ones on your device that didnt sync inthe move, copy one across, did it sync, yes ok, move on, if not, investigate, and so on and so forth.
Figured it out
For some reason it was not clear at the and now I don't know what changed, but it works so who cares.
All I did was go into activesync,
Tools > Options and check the contacts box.
For some reason before this was greyed out. At least I can now use this expensive device. Yay!!
OMG!!! What a horrible day!
I removed an exchange email today n quickly found out later that all my contacts n calendar were tied to it and i now hv to source for a OST to PST converter... argh...
Then I went on to set up my new pst file n tried to sync my mobile's contacts n calendar into the new outlook. First it says... attention required bcoz it was a wrong personal folder. So i deleted the device and added one back so it can now be linked to the new default calendar n contacts.
I carefully select on the device in the event of duplicate "mobile replace desktop" or somethign similar.
&^&(&#*#^ ACTIVE SYNC CLEARED MY CONTACTS n CALENDAR!!
I am .... argh..... so mad!!!!
As this is a new phone, i had only had a chance of sync it a wk ago n havent gone ard BACK UP!
PLEASEEEEEEEE HELP!!!!!!
And if any of you is able to help me convert my OST to PST file... I WOULD BE FOREVER GRATEFUL!! I hate EXCHANGE n I HEREBY HATE ACTIVE SYNC!!
Can someone also recomend what other sync appl can I use to replace active sync?
This may or may not help you........ I had the same thing happen to me, if you have OUTLOOK (NOT EXPRESS, OR OTHERS) then your contacts will be in the deleted tab.......... open outlook and recover........
Ouch, that's got to hurt
Glad I don't use ActiveSync (coded by pre teens) or Outlook (the target of all that malware)
Sorry for not helping
wise lesson: always make a backup, wich can be done on pc(outlook) as on your phone.....
sorry for not solving your problem, without a backup it's very difficult I think
so, you deleted your contacts, not ActiveSync itself, but sh*t happens man, life sometimes s*cks. Remember - ALLAYS make a full backup of your contacts
Since you have an .ost file, I assume you can still open your exchange account (cached) in Outlook. If you can, then create a PST file.
Go File > New > Outlook Data file, name it, save it somewhere you can easily find.
Once the PST is created, you wil have Personal Folders (default name)
Right click on the folder > New folder. Select Contact items on the dropdown, name it Contacts.
Now go to your Contacts under the Mailbox, Set view to Phone list or By Category to put them in a list, then drag the contact items to the Contact folder in the Personal folder.
If you want to move calendar items, Create a Calendar folder first, same steps as above.
If you really need to convert OST to PST, go here
I migrated to a new computer and while synchronizing with activesync, my whole contact list on my HTC Touch Pro 2 got deleted/replaced by the empty contact list from Outlook 2007. Unfortunately I had no backup yet (old computer was stolen). Is there a way to reverse the sync. Maybe there is a hidden backup file from WM. Could anyone help?
On Windows Vista i used to sync my phone through the Windows Mobile Device Center, and Microsoft Outlook, and get all my contacts from phone to the pc, and if my phone was hooked up also, if i add a new contact or change a detail of an older one in MS Outlook, it would immediately take change in my phone also..
Now a couple of weeks ago i put up Windows 7, and install the Outlook Connector, and now when i connect my phone, it wants to send all the hotmail contacts that i have right into my phone, which i dont want ofcourse, and if i try to delete them, they would delete from my address book and from MSN Messenger also! so im stuck here, im not even hooking up my phone to the computer cause otherwise i'll have my whole phone's contact list messed up with a bunch of email addresses of a bunch of people that i dont need on my phone, and that i cant delete cause i dont want to lose them from my computer or my MSN list either.. this is stressing!! hahaha, so if anyone had this, or knows how to set the Outlook/Connector/WMDC to keep outlook(hotmail) contacts on my computer and sync my phone contacts in a diferent folder without mixing them together, please, it would help me a lot!
EDIT: when i installed windows live on the phone, i unchecked the option of syncing my hotmail contacts, so thats not whats causing it, its purely because of Outlook..
Running Outlook 2007 - Connector - on XP sp3
When I set-up the Hotmail contacts installed to a separate address book. So my Outlook contacts are in "Contacts" whilst the Hotmail are in "Contacts in n****@hotmail.co.uk"
I know that you don't have Activesync which only sycns the main contacts folder. Are there other options in W7 version of AS (sorry can't remember the name). Do your hotmail contacts show in a separate contact folder?
I've lost my outlook connector toolbar and can't remember if it had additional settings.
Nev
in windows 7 i have windows mobile device center, and now i only have 1 "contacts" folder. thats the main problem i think, thats why everything is in the same "contants" , i remember a while ago, when everything used to work good, i did have a "Contacts" and seperate i had "Contacts in [email protected]"
any idea how to add/seperate them?
Not sure... Have tried uninstalling - but didn't seem to dump all of the data and on re-install has done every thing automatically..
see here
I tried to re-install to see if there were any additional setting, but I didn't remove properly.
Have a look under the account settings. You should have two data files... Are the mails being delivered to a different mailbox?
i still cant figure this out!
now i know the problem is that i have the same "contacts" folder both for my outlook contacts and for my hotmail contacts,,, i need to seperate them.. if anyone knows how?
I have been having some fun and games with phone contacts as some of you might have seen.
Another thing I did wrong was to import these sim contacts onto the phone [no need I am guessing] so I see them twice.
What I want to do i do a .pst export from my pc with the mobile numbers to my laptop whose outlook currently has no contacts and I can then import them all correctly orientated that way to my phone.
I would like to delete all the current phone contacts to be able to do this.
Anyway easy way please? (I did a quick seach with no joy!)
Thanks
if I understand you, you are trying to clear the phone completely of contacts, but can't be bothered to tick one at a time?
the key herr is that the sim contacts manager has a select all option, people tab menu doesn't.
try this
people all people menu sim manager menu select all menu delete.
that should be the sim empty(if it wasn't already)
now, if you go menu delete contacts, it will populate the empty screen with your phones contacts and let you then do menu select all delete.
phone should now be empty of contacts.
to be fair [bothered to tick one at a time] there are over 180!
Thanks, I will try that.
I can always copy the contacts back to the sim from my other phone.
sync with outlook delete them all from outlook sync again viola (u need to have set that PC is master for data)
Thanks for that.
I managed to solve a couple of problems in one go:
my contacts in outlook on the laptop is not populated so I imported the mobile numbers from desktop outlook to laptop contacts.
Then deleted sim and phone contacts then synched with laptop outlook and now Contacts are nicely arranged first name, last name.
Belts and braces - I copied all contacts to sim and then hid sim contacts
Thanks guys
just a thought but if you have them in the phone and outlook which I assume you are going to keep synced.. why copy to sim when that WON'T be synced and you run the risk of corrupting your good lis
t in the future?
the rationale when I did it was in case I need to send the phone back etc etc but I take your point that I would have the backup on the laptop.
Just another layer of backup which I hopefully will not have to use?
heh yea.just don't forget they're there and accidentally merge them go the future...back to square one. lol
There is an app around that will clear the contacts on a windows mobile device.
If you search 'clear contacts in windows mobile' in google you should find it. Not sure if it's Mobile 6.5 ready.
