T9193 Economics Class - Your thoughts? - HD2 General

I was watching with interest to see what effect the T-Mobile introduction would have on the price position of the T9193. New/sealed prices the last few weeks have been in the 750 to 1000 US$ range with shipping from outside US. Yesterday two sold on Ebay for under 600 US$ with shipping from within the US (no warranty mentioned). These were "official" AU T9193's according to the seller.
The price pressure of the T-Mobile unit at 100 to 200 US$ is considerable. Anyone have any thought on where this is going? Economically speaking.

My only thing is this. You get the 200 dollar deal at Tmobile US with contract only right? To get one without contract is closer to $500 i believe it is $475 or something.
I purchased a 9193 off ebay for 400 w/ broken digi.
Just some more input for the class.
The tradeoffs of 9193 vs Tmobile US version
9193 Pros
- It's going to already be unlocked to any GSM
- Get 3G unlike 8525 euro model
- A little more rom in comparison to 8525 euro model
9193 Cons
- 3G only on 850 band
T-Mobile USA Pros
- Twice the rom capacity as 9193 and 8525
- Usually found at least $100 cheaper than 9193
- 3G Forreal!
T-Mobile USA Cons
- T-Mobile bloatware, most download new ROM, this is a risk for some
- Locked to T-Mobile network/carrier, stuck with their slow ass
- To get for $200 you must buy T-Mo contract, booo
I tend to lean to the 9193, but that extra ROM in the tmo + full 3g makes tmobile usa version look good. But I gotta get the thing unlocked somehow if I get one, I can't be on that nasty network!
Another thing to consider is that you are going to have a hard time getting manufacture repairs if you live in US and own a Telestra 9193. Something to consider. I order parts, but most don't.

Wow, Class just got a lot smarter with that reply!
Throwing the Amazon and Wirefly 100 $US price in there adds to the T-Mobile side of he equation.
The under 600 $US price has me baffled. They are more than that on the street in AU. Was it a dump by a hoarder in anticipation of the price falling further? Are there some coming into the US from somewhere else that are less expensive than in AU?
Where are the AU models actually made? Could someone be shipping from there and skipping the middle man? This is an open class. Speculation and rumors accepted.

Another thought for the Economics Class

I would guess that HD2 repair will become more easily obtained because of thousands of units hitting the streets this week. T9193 warranty repair will still be an issue, but out of warranty repair and parts hopefully will see a price decrease because they are usually volume driven.

Very low price in Florida?????????????
Just found a sale on them in a Florida website. $385.00 Probably a "if it looks too good to be true it probably is" thing. A web store called mobile2cellstore.com. A human did answer the phone though. Maybe there is another pipeline into the US.

Although the mobile2cellstore.com website states its the T9193 if you look under the specs it says 3G Network HSDPA 900 / 2100.
Doesn't it need to say 850 / 2100 to worrk on AT&T?

I am anticipating a larger T9193 price drop as well. I got a Nokia N900 instead for work and will get a T9193 for play, when the price point hits $500 US.

Yes. I missed that.

After a while, the price should settle to around 600-650.
Back when I was considering selling my HD2 - thankfully I didn't - I noticed an auction where a 9193 was around $700-750 until ~4hrs before close, where it shot up well past $800. This was just before the USTM HD2 came out, so not terribly long ago.
Now, looking at the three most recently closed auctions, we see they all finished above above $775, with one passing $810.
Looking further back in history, I see a few auctions that were very low, below t8585 even, but generally the bidder was untrustworthy or the auction was poorly created.
This phone should hold its value decently well.

Alright So I called them this morning and asked if they truly have the T9193 as the 3g specs on their website are not correct. He asked me what I needed and I said I needed the T9193 which has the 3g bands of 850 / 2100. He confirmed that they have that phone in stock and the price for that version would be $400. He asked if I was ready to place an order and I said I was concerned that with that kind of money I wanted to see proof that the phone was indeed the T9193. He got upset with me and he was hard to understand but in summary he said that if they send me the wrong phone that I can clearly see on their website that their return policy is 90 days. When asked if this was an original HTC phone he said that they do not sell or offer cloned phones. Has anyone ordered from here? Anyone in Florida that can stop by and confirm this is a legit business and phone?

Well that confirms that I will have to hold out and look elsewhere. Thanks for the feedback.

More news for the class
I asked the Australian T9193 sellers where their phones are manufactured. All said in Taiwan, were all HTC's are made. I found two companies by Google in China that say they make T9193's. I have also found four sellers on Google that are selling them in the $300.00 range. One, at least, is using PayPal for payment. Just wondering if these are knock-off's. I have seen statements like "this is not the cheap Chinese model", but have seen no direct evidence of one.

what i wanna know how much its the device to built and how much profit its t-mobile making at a 200 price range? i guess t-mobile making profit on the voice & data rather than making money on the device unless its sold at a full price.

here i another scenario for you guys .... what if you buy it on contract for say $99.99 from wire-fly and then a few weeks later just pay the ETF ( I am not positive but should not be higher then Verizon's ridiculous $300) and you are still only at $400 investment.

If they sell it cheaper they sell the device at a loss to hook you into the 2 year contract in which they will make their money back. If you buy the device outright they make money on the sale and off the plan package but they have nothing to recoup so its all profit.

Best Place to Sell ADP1?

Well I bought my ADP1 to experiment with Android on AT&T. Now I'm in a bit of a pickle.
AT&T has just installed 3G in my area and I am looking to buy a Rogers Dream so I can use 3G. I would like to sell my ADP1 to recoup some of my costs on it and pay for the Rogers Dream.
What is the best place to sell the ADP1? Also, is eBay the best place to buy the Rogers Dream? The best deal I could find was $400 on ebay with $480 being the next best. Anyone know of a better deal?
Just sell it on eBay, 'cause I got mine there.
But why would you want to buy Rogers Dream anyway? Aren't it the same thing? The radio in G1 is quad-band.
Not the 3G radio.

The Rogers Dream can use ATT's 3G service, with a T-mobile G1/ADP1 you will only get EDGE.

Bingo! Thats why I'm looking at it. And to the person who said eBay, thats what it looks like I'll go with, or I may sell my iPhone 3G for $400+ to cover the full cost of the Rogers Dream and then sell my ADP1 later.
Any thoughts on that?
Take your pic man... personally if I were you, I'd keep the iPhone so that you could switch back and forth. If you sell on eBay, just take into account the various fees you'll have to cover. Listing fees, final value fee, paypal fees, and shipping.
Craigslist maybe? As long as you deal smart you can usually make a nice sale thru that site (at least, around here).
Also, check out Gazelle.com, they buy all types of mobile devices, however, you probably won't be getting the amount of money you're hopeing for (they buy a perfect condition ADP1 for $185). Last resort methinks.

What price do you pay for an unlocked HD2?

It is about $700 on Amazon and the best price being $675. Plus the shipping cost.
Does anyone have better offers?
http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Unlocked-..._1_1?ie=UTF8&s=wireless&qid=1270388078&sr=8-1
I am planning to get these phones for a cheaper price and ship it worldwide, so am taking in everyones opinion.
Why not buy the T9193? It's about the same price, as the T8585, PLUS you can get 3G Speeds, on other networks, like AT&T, with it.
Am not buying them for personal use.
Its for selling at a better price than Amazon and other sites
You'd never be able to expect as much as a retail store would. After all with a retail store there is a comeback for warranty etc.
I think your main thing is going to be beating T-Mobile's price, as this is where many US users are getting their's.
I paid $650 CDN.

Getting close . I'm still banging my head to find out when my network is going to have them ready for order.
I'd like to take this occasion to point out that $599 price point. That would be... wait for it *drum roll* ...
Cheaper than the equivalent (16GB +3G) iPad.
That would mean that the Wifi version should cost less than a stock galaxy.
That would mean that the Tab is priced even more competitively than I've been preaching about for a month *looks smug*
I'd like to point out the contract-price.. $399 with 24 month contract... IF that would be just simply converted to euros (about 290€) I'd buy TWO
Unfortunately, knowing where I live, it's probably close to 599€ with 24 month contract... (I'll still buy on )
In all honesty, assuming the US hardware is identical and the price here in the UK is higher, I might even import me a US one and flash it onto the euro ROM.
Only reason I've been thinking of buying on contract was because I figured I might need to cover the costs. But £375 for an unlocked GSM version I can happily do upfront, even with a bit extra in tax and shipping, particularly if british retailers stick with the £599 price point (which I've always thought was crazy, but they might).
Then I can just swap my SIM from my galaxy into it.
Either way, thats a damn fine price.
Edit- Oh and I'm with you on buying two at that price. Could sell one still boxed and make a tidy profit, or an awesome christmas gift for my fiancee.
i find your maths interesting.
also a leaked tmobile slide is stating $649.99, which is more than the larger screened ipad with 3g.
i dont look smug though as i never wanted this thing to cost more than the Apple product. i think if you really want to get a Tab, then i would seriously wait until after christmas, as there is no way its going to sell well at this price so its got to come down.
Samsung are kidding themselves if they think they have the same blind support that Apple enjoy.
p.s. i dont know how it works in the US, but the tmobile slide also states the $649.99 as 'dealer price'. dealer price in the UK would be the price the reseller pays the manufacturer, before they add on their margin, its not the price to the end consumer. it may work different in the US though

My math was done from the BGR report (the t-mo slide was edited in later) where it says $599 is the full retail price. I ran $599 through XE.com and got £375. Don't know what else I can say... Full retail price = the price.
Also, Engadget is heavily pro apple. They never criticize their pricing and always say iProducts are 'better', even getting specs wrong on the competitors and not changing opinions when shown they're wrong.

Samsung Focus price drop looks PERMANENT

If you haven't heard already, AT&T's website shows a change in price for the Focus which was originally $199 and is now $99 on contract. I was assuming this was just a random New Year's sale but now I'm not so sure.
Yesterday on Gizmodo, I noticed that Microsoft was advertising WP7 and the Focus but those banners had been there for a while. Then I realized it was also advertising the $99 price and I don't remember AT&T advertising many of their sales before.
Today my cousin needed to return a router to AT&T so I went to the local store in Southern California and I decided to check out the price. There it was on the sign: "$99 on contract". That rules out a web-only sale too. So after my cousin had returned the router. I asked one of the employees there about the phone's price. He said they just got word of the new pricing last night and changed it in-store this morning. I asked him if it was permanent and he replied, "I'm not completely sure. Like I said, we only just got the message yesterday and it just said to change the price."
If it were a sale, then AT&T would probably be screaming about it from the rooftops and make their employees tell customers it was a limited time only...but that's not the case. So it looks like the Focus has officially dropped to $99 on contract.
Now the real question is: why? Seems convenient for the price to drop the week of CES so maybe thats a hint that AT&T will be getting some new smartphones in their lineup soon, maybe even more WP7s. Another thing to consider is that AT&T is trying to rope in as many customers as it possibly can before Verizon gets the iPhone 4, which is rumored and has some evidence to support it happening a couple of weeks after CES. Take it as you will, but a great cutting-edge smartphone is now $100 and thats pretty sweet if you ask me.
Well, assuming the Surround and Quantum haven't dropped too, the Focus is the only 8GB WP7, and the 8GB iPhone is $99. It could be Samsung/Microsoft/AT&T wanted that price lower so the Focus was clearly a better choice.
@FishFace - Both the Samsung Focus and the LG Quantum are getting the $100-pricepoint-treatment.

That's what is so odd. Why are only the Quantum and the Focus getting the price drop?
My only theory right now is that AT&T wanted all three at the $100 price point but HTC declined while LG & Samsung both agreed. I'm sticking with my master theory that AT&T wants as many people as humanly possible to come to AT&T before Verizon's iPhone is announced as this also makes sense with AT&T offering early upgrades for people interested in buying the iPhone 4.
$99 on contract price is so so as most online dealers already sold them for $49 or free. However, the biggest story in this price reduction is that both Focus and Quantum now sell for $399 off contract. That's a very attractive price for me w/o (not even possible right now) sign up two more years of contract.
I suspect the HTC doesn't sell as well as the other two. And also this move is in anticipation of WP7 phones will be released to Verizon and Sprint soon, not iPhone. iPhone itself has the price drop as well at the same time.
iphone4 is not the threat. It would be the iPhone5 ! Or even WP8 !
And the strategy to go to a $100 now is brilliant. I mean how many smartphones that are really worth buying are at this price point? Seems to me that they have found a great price point and will sell millions of them. They proabably get some kind of rebate from Microsoft for selling so many units and Microsoft will benefit from increased users buying Apps or XboxLive games.
No different than a Toyota Corolla. Make a good car and sell it at a great price point and they sold LOTS of them. Build up a huge customer base and when the customer is ready to replace the Corolla, then they up sell to the Camry or to the Lexus., or sell them another Corolla. Eitherway they have huge following.
HTC doesn't know how to make a reasonably priced phone. Well, they know how to make a phone that should be reasonably priced, that's all they make, but they don't price them according to what they're actually worth.
In case you guys are interested, Amazon Wireless is selling the Focus for $0.01 today. Stock is definitely on the move. I'm guessing a Focus 2 with Super AMOLED Plus might be on the way.
Pretty simple, ATT is the only company presently that has a Galaxy S windows7 phone, my guess is the rest of the cell companies are about to get their versions too, much like they all did with Android.
If the Focus is priced $100 cheaper than tmobile, verizon, sprint galaxy S versions, they hope it will take the steam out of their fanfare.
Only reason there isnt a Windows7 phone in my house currently is cos I only have tmobile and sprint.
EDIT: And no galaxy S with the hummingbird or SAMOLED screen

Very unlikely I think, if they had a new Focus coming out it would have been announced at CES. And Focus is still a very new phone and apparently selling very well (no wonder, it's amazing).

Yes but too big and heavy, not to mention my Samsungs have consistently had better reception than my HTCs inside buildings where I use the phone 90% of the time
Just bought one off Amazon for $0.01. Friend got one through AT&T for the same price after he told them about the Amazon offer.
ATT told me that most likely its because its a 3g phone and they're in the process of rolling out the 4g network. Whatever, I got the phone for 0.01...Including shipping!
It says in the website that it can be as upgrade to an existing line. My question is, what if your line is not eligible for upgrade yet. Will your bill show up with the list price after a month or two? Has anyone encounter this yet?
If you are not yet qualified, you have to pay full out of contact price which is $399 if you go to an AT&T store or $499 from 3rd party online.

Could be but somehow I doubt it has anything to do with 4G, since the average consumer I don't think knows about 4G or cares at this point. The fact that they are willing to give you the phone for free tells you they know they will make their money back by the end of the contract, with a sizable profit .

i had 10 months left in my contract, and 2 separate phone calls by me (and one by a friend who got the same deal) said that my old contract was being ended, and they would create a new one that started the day the phone was activated. They know if you're eligible for an upgrade - they ask for your phone # and last name. My friend who called had 3 months left on his contract, and was unable to get the deal at first. When he called AT&T, they cleared his contract and he checked on their again -and it was eligible. He ended up buying through ATT because they said they'd match the same deal.

Could you ask him how he got it through AT&T? I just asked a branch store and they said they could not offer the $0.01 deal...
I'm thinking of getting one off contract for $400. (don't wanna get locked in to Rogers - $400 voice cancellation + $100 data cancellation, 3 yr contract).
What have your experiences been like with unlocking? I heard ATT is refusing to unlock, and unlock codes go for up to $40 online...
When I was in-store the other day, I'm pretty sure the sale price on the Focus said until 1/31. I think it's only good for a couple more weeks, but we'll see.

[Q] How much for a mytouch 4g?

Ok so here is whats going on..
I live in Toronto and is using mobilicity(same frequency as T-mobile)
I currently have the mytouch 3g slide, i got it off the flee market.
I loved the phone so much and i have been reading about the mytouch 4g that i want to upgrade.
Now my question is where is the cheapest place to get a Brand New mytouch 4g unlocked?
I know T-mobile sometimes unlocks their phones for free but my question with them is that on their site i cant get the phone without a contract.
I am willing to drive to buffalo to an actual T-mobile store but what is their price on the phone with no contract?
Thanks in advance
Well that depends if you want new then I recommend buying from TMobile as you will have remorse and warranty without contract for 450+tax total 480 or so. Using website you can't order it as you have to call it in and order it via phone or go in to the local store. Now if you want to buy new or mint like conditions for cheaper price then try Craigslist or eBay which is selling for $350-400. You have higher chance of getting washed out display which you will have issues now if you don't care about it then just buy it. Far as unlocking goes you can do radio s=off yourself and sim unlock it.
I got mine on craigslist 290

I got mine for 350 on cl new in case right after I returned the Nexus S to Best Buy.
Best phone yet hands down.
Well 350 is the avg price but the thing is what will you do when you get bad display?
Thanks a lot guys for clearing that up a bit for me.
I think i might go with buying a brand new one,
I'm the kind of guy who likes to have things from the start and since i don't see myself getting another phone for a while i think it will be better off to get it new
Cl for $250 new from a tmobile rep, was unopened when I purchased it. May try a costco or sams, im looking into a two year contract and can get another mytouch 4g, or g2 for 99

I've had a couple of chances to buy them off CL in barely used condition for $250ish, but average price seems to be about $300.
Ive looked in Craiglist around my area and the cheapest I've found was 400, i dont want to order from ebay because my visa is currently over due
for 400 i think id rather just buy it from T-mobile.
But once again thanks for tips and your thoughts

Shop more carefully. Post a WANT AD instead and you'll get lower prices. Worked for me. But then again I live in the SF Bay Area where CL was born, so there's a lot of action.
Check this one out - this one is within driving distance of me.

The best thing I like about CL is the false advertisement to lure folks in each threads by the seller. How they claim its new then when you go inside you see its used lol it can't be new (NIB) but its used morons. Don't waste your time with CL with 1st batch still out in large go pay the full price if money is not object for you or get it via EIP though tmobile I am guessing they have like 30-35 smaller payments.
Now I wouldn't mind buying it of CL year later but not even at that price as most idiots do want 350 for device that should be 150 due to time but they want the price they bought it for lol you have to love people who has 0 to no experience in sale department.

If you do your due diligence as a buyer and inspect the product it's fine. Just like buying a used car.
I bought a mt3g on CL for $200 and sold it on CL 9 months later with accessories for $200. Then a couple weeks later I picked up my gf's Captivate for $200 and in a year I'll probably sell it for $250.
I'm a perfectly straightforward and honest buyer and seller. Post a want ad to buy then post a sale ad to sell. This isn't rocket science.

lol I actually completely agree with this. Just two months ago I wanted to buy a N1 and people wanted $350-$400 for them. I even had to prove to one guy that they were $529 at full retail not even a year ago. SMH...

Its not that i dont shop carfully.
I live in Toronto, theres probably only a few people selling around here and they want 400+ especially since "It's not out in Canada".
When i check buffalo and that area there are only a few low priced phone which are used and when i tried contacting them they where already sold.
