Augh. Like a kid at Christmas, I waited for the FedEx guy to show today. I finally pulled the trigger and bought the AT&T N1 unlocked phone. Like a good boy, I unpacked it and charged it "fully" before trying to use it. Imagine my disappointment when I attempted to put my AT&T SIM card into the slot and it would NOT go in! I'm not even talking halfway, barely at all.
I went to a friend's house and we shined a pin light down the slot and we saw a black, protruding thing so we're thinking THAT is block it. We even tried his 1 year old SIM card from his IPHONE and it does not go in!
So for kicks, I called Google Help Desk and talked to a friendly rep but there was only so much she can do. She suggested I contact HTC but man, what a bummer....I guess I'll have to mail it back tomorrow and hope I get one back by middle of next week.
Bummer man.....

Oh yeah, trust me. I did. Actually originally I did accidentally put the microSD card in that slot. But I was able to pull it out and put it in the sd slot. Then I took my SIM card and tried to put it in but no luck.
The Google lady said she never head of that but that doesn't surprise me. My buddy and i used a pen light to move that "black" plastic that we thought was preventing it from going it in but no dice!
How can you put it in the microSD slot when the memory card is in there? Also are you putting it in the right way?

Hey Kid,
Originally, during my excitement, I accidentally put my micro card in the SIM slot. It almost went in there all the way but I was able to pull it out with my fingernails.
Yes -- I followed the card diagram and put the curved edged side near the top and still no deal. Heck, for kicks, I rotated the card in all angles and nothing.
I know..embarassing.
All,
Well Google never head of my issue and I can't say I blame them. For what it's worth, I'm uploading a pic to show you just how "far" I can slide my SIM card in.

close this thread. Can't believe it. It appears there was a microsd card jammed into that slot. I was able to pull it out. now the question is where did it come from and what does it contain.........
the phone is suppose to come with a 4 gig micro sd. I guess whoever packaged the phone from the factory must have jammed it into the wrong slot.
dude your phone comes with a 4gb micro sd card, its suppose to be in your sd slot but I guess the person who packaged the phone made the same mistake you did and put it into the sim slot.

So, I have the xperia play on Verizon. It most definitely does have a slot for a SIM card, just underneath the sd card slot. There is a piece of plastic glued in place over it blocking its use. Anybody know what its use is for? If this phone was unlocked, could it be a world phone? Anybody know anything yet?
Thanks.
Maybe it's just that they use the same housing as for the normal version but there is no working electronics.

Well go ahead and take that little piece of plastic off and try a Sim card, it has to be for a Sim cause that's what mine has, the Sim right under the sd card

you should try flashing a generic rom like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1097591
maybe it'll enable gsm?

Well, if we can load a generic firmware, we might get it activated. Then we could get an EMEI number to unlock the bootloader. In the mean time... bootloader is still locked so we can't flash nothing on it.
also if you look at the back there is a black sticker to the right of the cam it looks like the same conector that the thunderbolt uses to connect to the batty cover for its 4g signal could it be able to upgrade to 4g with the sim slot and the external conector
update: pulled off the sticker more i was wrong its the vibrate motor it looked like a connector with the tape half off
Hey guys, just yesterday i recieved my LG Nexus 4, and i inserted my sim card, which i had cut to fit in the micro sim tray(with a micro sim cutter). The problem is that the phone can't recognize it. It says "No Sim Card". I tried other sims too but still the same. When i try with an AT&T sim however, the phone can recognize it. I know you are gonna say it's locked. But it's factory unlocked, straight from google. I also tried to unlock it in case it was really locked, but this "secret" code: 2945#*960#, doesn't seem to working. Any help?
Thanks in advance.
I had the same issue too when I cut a T-Mobile sim. What I did to solve the issue is I looked at the back of the att sim where the gold plate is. I noticed three lines scratched on from where the phones contact pins touch the gold plate. I then looked at the cut up T-Mobile sim and noticed it only had 2 lines scratched on it. Meaning a third pin was not touching the gold plate leading to no service. What I did was try to file the sim even more and made sure the gold plate on the cut up sim was in the same place as the att's plate. Also look at where the att's plate is while in the sim tray to get an idea of where the contact pins are. I ended up having an even smaller sim and had to cut a piece of an extra sim and placing it in the tray so the sim wouldn't slide around when in the phone. Never had an issue since.
Hope this helps.

Hmm... the problem is that the sims are working fine in other phones, like iPhone or HTC. Only with the nexus, the sims don't work.

How long do you leave the sims in the phone for? ANd do you restart the phone I guess after you swapped the sim? When switching sims for me it takes a good minute or two to recognise the sim card for me. The iphone was pretty quick at recognising a new sim.

But it's not cut well enough to work with the N4. Others have had this same problem. Maybe the N4 is just more demanding of the exact placement of the SIM chip?

hmm well, to be honest to make the AT&T sim to work with the phone, first i turn off the phone then insert the sim and turn it on again. But for some reason that doesn't work with other sims even when letting the phone for minutes to recognize the sim(s).

(I typed Z instead of h in http due to this forum limitations for users with less than 10 posts, just type it correctly)
Probably the contacts are touching somewhere the frame and are being short circuited.
Yust apply a bit of tape.

Same thing happened to me! I just emailed Sony to see what we can do about it. Maybe they have a repair department. It might be a widespread issue/ design flaw.

Skimmed the instructions in above link.
"Using a fingernail, pull out the micro SIM card holder.
Place the micro SIM card on the holder, with the gold-coloured contacts on the micro SIM card facing up.
Insert the micro SIM card holder back into the device. "
What got me was their word of caution "Inserting the micro SIM card into the device without the SIM card holder could damage your micro SIM card or your device, and Sony Mobile does not warrant and will not be responsible for any damage caused by such action."
How could you put the sim card in without the sim card holder without taking it out completely. If I did break it, Oh well, it works just fine when I put it back into the phone with the tray.
TO THE OP: Try a new sim and/or APN settings

Don't worry, OP was from Sept '13. @Vela001 is just necromancing.
I am currently in the process of replacing my sim card holder internals, it is a bad design and quite fragile, ordered the part online still waiting for it to arrive, had to improvise in the mean time with a soldering iron

XPERIA z1 sim card slot broken
Hey....
I have the same issue with my XPERIA Z1...:crying:
Did you get the solution for yours???
Looks like I have the same issue, and now I have a totally stuck sim tray (I had stupidly put a micro to mini sim adapter in the tray empty, which I think caught the leads even more).
I have no idea how to get it out now. Any forcing will probably totally break it (if it isn't broken already).
Wow what a stupid design.
(Any thoughts on how I can get this out? Can I open up the whole device?)

you will be very lucky not to have bent the sim tray contacts - the damage will have been done going in not out, you will have to use a little force to remove what you have stuck in there - fingers cross the contact pins are still intact though I doubt it
The sim holder can be bought on ebay for about $5 and it can be resoldered into place, removal of the mother board will be required which is about a 1/3 disassembly - back cover off - plastic frame removed 8 screws - battery out - all connectors and camera removed - MB removed - replace sim holder, you can basically forget about the waterproof after all that - but you will have a fully working Z1 - you can buy all the seals on ebay - back cover is all you need and it is important because it protects the camera from flash bleed
I have been using my S4 with a nano sim in a micro sim card adapter. Last night I went to take it out and it messed up the sim slot. The little prongs are sticking out. I can't insert anything into the sim slot. I am beyond upset about this. I have always been super careful when inserting and removing my sim. It actually almost damaged my sim coming out. I've had it with pretty much everything about the S4. Locked bootloader, bad development support, bricked devices, ect...
So now it has to be sent in for repair. Ok, no bid deal, right? Wrong! Now I'm going to loose my MDL firmware and custom recovery. I restored the phone to stock MDL, but I am sure Samsung will update to their latest knox crap and Android 4.3. Ugh. I don't think I ever want to buy another Samsung phone again!
Any other options, I'd be very grateful.
Merry Christmas!

Yea, I'm actually going to look into fixing it myself. I just don't want to ship it to Samsung and have them mess up my phone and give me Android 4.3.
Shouldn't cost a lot. I paid $8 for the one I used to repair an s4. Guy had put a micro SD into the sim slot and tore it up. Took me 10 minutes to do the repair. Few screws to get the midframe off. Popped the flex cable and slid a metal spudger under the tray and it came off easily. Put the new one in the same spot and worked perfect

Sure it can be fixed. But does that mean the Galaxy S4 slim slots are just garbage in general? I like to switch back and forth between my iPhone and Gs4. Iphone 5S takes nano sim, so I use micro sim adapter. I'm hoping that didn't f it up.
SD Card reader replacement fail... twice
I have replaced the SIM/SD reader on my i337 twice now (2 different new parts), and since the original problem (phone started randomly reporting "SD card removed") I Have never gotten the phone to recognize any of the 3 SD cards I have inserted. All of the test SD cards have been FAT32 and are recognized by other phones and PC via USB readers. Also, this phone will read the same SD cards successfully if mounted via USB on the go connector/adapter, so I believe the cards are good and their filesystems are readable by my kernel. Through all this, the SIM reader has always worked fine.
I think it might be time to get a new phone...

Cut a screen protector stripe narrower than the sim card insert it in the sim card tray by pressing gently just make sure the adhesive side stick on the sim and not on the tray then pull it out
Take it to a repair shop. They could probably sort it in 5 minutes and it should not cost much.

I just did this in a moment of stupidity. In the end I used the sim removal tool within the slot to work the sim out just enough to get a fingernail on and pull it out.
Hope this helps someone else in future.
