How to keep the WiFi on?

Does anyone know how I can keep the WiFi on when the phone goes into snooze mode? (i.e. when it turns "off" after a few minutes, or when you tap the power button.)
I'm curious, because I've loaded Skype on it. I've configured Skype to WiFi only, and when I'm home, it's WiFi connected. But after a few minutes of inactivity, the phone goes into snooze mode, and the WiFi is turned off. So if I want to be able to receive Skype calls, I've got to keep the phone fully on all the time. Ideally I'd like to let the phone go into snooze mode but keep the WiFi part running so I can receive Skype calls. (Just like I can receive cell calls when the phone is in snooze mode.)
Any ideas?

you can set skype to keep the phone ON. check settings [or options in skype]

I did enable that setting in Skype. It didn't seem to help. Whenever the phone goes into snooze mode, the WiFi always seems to be disabled.

odd mine stays on what version of skype are you using?

Perhaps this is related: I've noticed that every time my phone wakes up, the WiFi cycles and reconnects. I've turned off the "Auto turn off WLAN if not connected" setting. It's acting like the WiFi is always turned off when the phone goes into standby/snooze mode. I'm wondering if there's a setting somewhere that I'm just missing.
BTW: I'm on HTC ROM 1.35.255.2 (if that makes any difference).

WiFi does not stay connected when any device goes into suspend mode (8525, laptop, etc). That is why MS Direct Push only works over cellular connection. Your best option for skype is to force the phone to not go into suspend. Curious to know your battery usage.

We have the same ROM [1.35.xx] I have beta 2.2 of Skype on my device. Just tested it device stayed on as long as I was signed in. My device shut itself down after 1 minute [this is what I set in Power] once I exit Skype.

Ah, then perhaps the beta version fixed that setting.
Can you try this and tell me if it works?:
1. Log into Skype via WiFi.
2. Tap the power button to go into standby.
3. Ask someone to call you on Skype.
4. Does you phone wake up and ring?

Yeah, that's what I'm seeing. I'm wondering if there's a way to keep the WiFi on in standby mode. I've tried keeping my phone on all the time, but:
1. It gets a warm (worries me a little)
2. All the buttons are active, so if I put it in the belt holder, some of the buttons eventually get pressed
3. Battery life is...concerning (dropped from 100% down to 50% for a good 10-hr work day.).

I think what he is trying to tell us is, if he has skype running his phone wont go into standby. it keeps running...

tapping the power button will put the device in standby and power down wifi and I will be disconnected from skype. try skype 2.2 beta and see if the device stays awake.

Right. I should have been a little more clear in my question.
Is there a way I can keep the WiFi on when the phone goes into standby mode?

I think it's been commented that VJEschaton keeps wifi on (it wasn't designed for Hermes) - I tested it briefly on my Hermes and it just seemed to lock up the phone after switching off.
However, VJEschaton (on other devices) forces the wifi on and doesn't register it for power management features. Which means that it doesn't (or shouldn't) respond to requests to disable it. This could be considered a bug that I intend to fix when I get around to it, but could potentially be considered a plus depending on your disposition.

Interesting. Can you tell me how VJEschaton kept the WiFi on?
Was it a registry setting, or a program?

Was there ever a solution to this to keep Wifi on when the Hermes goes to standby. I am not interested in Skype though, I just want the Wifi always on just like the GPRS stays on when device goes to standby.

I only want to do it sometimes. When I am at my house I would rather have the Wifi on instead of using GPRS, but i still want the device to go to standby to conserve a little power.

still no solution ? I am also trying to find out how to turn off power management for WIFI so that if it goes into standby, wifi is still working.
It is annoying if I am downloading a large file and if I set power off to a few mins. When I turn on the device from standby, download disconnected and Wifi only starts to reconnect.
Hope there is a way to do this. Any reg key ?

Wifi functionality relies on OS functions that wouldn't be available in standby mode. Even if the wifi radio could be left powered on when the phone is in standby, it wouldn't be able to wake it up on activity like bluetooth does.
And for the record, according to BatteryStatus: TyTn on, with BT and phone enabled (Edge), backlight off = 35mA current consumption.
Same with WiFi on = 270mA
I let you figure out the saving. For the key thing, just use the device lock today plugin...

if you use skype or im+ they have a setting to keep the device awake while connected.

That's not the point, the question was about how to still have WiFi on without having to keep the device awake...

Screen off but not sleeping??

Last night I used my phone for about 43 minutes before going to bed. Then I put my phone into Airplane mode and turned off the screen. When I woke up this morning, my phone was 10% less battery, and then I find this:
How the heck is my phone off but not sleeping? And what is using the battery???
I couldn't get a screenshot of other stuff before the plugged in stuff reset, but Partial wakelock usage was Android System. In About Phone -> Battery, the largest was Display followed by Cell Phone Idle. (Again, screen was off, and phone was in airplane mode.)

I also put the phone in airplane mode at night, and compared to your 10% loss, mine was 45 in 4 1/2 hours

Yep, 1013.
Unfortunately, it's hard to tell if this is really the top used overnight, since the "unplugged" history resets as soon as I plug in power. I'll check again tomorrow morning if it is the most used for overnight.
I doubt it is though, because in airplane mode, there should be 0 network usage, shouldn't it?...

When in airplane mode nothing should be using network since there is no network available. However i am guessing some process is trying to usenetwork and maybe it lists that under battery history.

Yay! I woke up this morning and my phone did not lose a single percentage of battery life!
I used TasKiller to absolutely kill all running apps before going to bed And of course, made sure to start the clock app again (even though ignored) just in case!
I guess apps in the background really do waste a ton of battery!!!
No idea what 1013 is or what else might be causing it to not sleep, but killing all apps before going to bed seems to be the only solution.
I'm not sure if this is an Android issue, or badly written apps issue.

I do not have this 1013 on my phone, so it has to be something you have installed. Further my phones sleep and onscreen times fairly closely match up, and I do not kill any app what so ever. If you're unable to run debugging directly, I would suggest uninstalling app's one or two at at time starting with the lesser main stream ones.

AHA!!!! I've figured it out!!!
I've been closely monitoring my phone over the past 11 days, trying to spot when it goes into non-sleep mode. I've noticed this happens every few days, and trying to get the pattern down for what was causing it was extremely difficult since I seemed to always be running different things (or nothing at all). I have a Battery History shortcut (mapped by AnyCut) on my home screen, which I've been checking frantically every few hours (crazy yes ).
Well today I finally figured out what was causing it! It's not an App. And it's not an Android System app either. I finally found the pattern that this is frequently caused (but not always obviously) when putting the phone into Airplane Mode. For some reason, it seems closing down the connection sometimes will randomly prevent sleep mode, regardless if absolutely nothing was using the phone or data connection at the time the phone was switched to Airplane Mode.
This would explain why in the picture of my first post, it went into non-sleep mode immediately after I turned off the connection and went to sleep.
As for a fix, I've found that switching Airplane Mode off and back on (cycle the connection on/off) will allow it to sleep properly.

Yes I have seen the same thing but clearly it was happening prior to the first N1 update. Are you still seeing this problem after the update?

Yes, quite often. Pretty much every time I put it into Airplane mode and turn the Wifi on.

Right now my Tab 2 stats show the device is going 2 days 14 hours on a battery charge with 43% left. I use the Tab a few hours a day web surfing, doing research, checking and responding to emails. There are a number of ways to save juice so I'll mention a few that I use; which some, all, or none, may be applicable to others' situations:
#1 - Go into "Settings", then "Wi-Fi". At the top right-hand side there is a icon of "3 bars and a small triangle" (basically an option button) click on it and and when the "Advance" box shows on the screen, click it. Then click on "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" then check "only when plugged in". This will turn off the Wi-Fi when in sleep mode & running on the batteries. I use a login pattern to unlock my Tab and every time I unlock the screen it states "establishing Wi-Fi connection" I'm using WEP2 encryption on my network and the Tab starts Wi-Fi within seconds of waking from sleep. If one wants their Tab running multiple apps and to always have the most up-to-date information "pushed" to the device even while sleeping and running in battery mode, then one has to trade battery life for always-on information. The Wi-Fi will be active in sleep mode when it is plugged in. If you Always want the Wi-Fi off when in sleep mode then select "Never" instead of "Only when plugged in".
#2 - I mostly use my Tab at home or at the office. I have both Wi-Fi network settings saved in the device, so I turned off "Network Notification" in the same area as # 1 above. This stops the Tab from periodically searching the Wi-Fi Network for "Open Networks". If I go out and want to connect to a Wi-fi hot spot, I simply turn this feature back on.
Note: When you are in "Settings" and "Wi-Fi" mode you will notice that periodically the device shows "Scanning". Because you are in Wi-Fi mode, it scans to refresh the wi-fi networks its found, to help you connect to them. It does not continue to scan the network after you leave Wi-Fi settings, unless "Network Notification" is turn on, although the scan intervals may be different between the two modes.
#3 - In "Settings" then " Location Services" make sure "Use GPS Satellites" is unchecked. This requires more battery and a clear view of the sky, and is really only useful outside.
Those 3 settings will make a difference in battery consumption, and will not affect most people's use of the Tablet, although others' actual mileage may vary
#4 - In addition, as I stated earlier, I mostly use my Tab 2 at work or home, so I always know where I am. Therefore, I also turn off "Use Wireless Networks" (Found in the "Location Service" section). This use Wi-Fi to help determine your location for Maps and such. If a App or Apps are running in the background and they have a location feature, this stop them from updating while the Tab is sitting idle, or your while your using other apps.
#5- Because I use my Tab mostly at work or home and I know where I am, I usually turn-off GPS. Click on the "Clock" icon at the lower right-hand side, and then uncheck "GPS". If I ever need it, I quickly turn it back on.
#6- In "Settings" "Account and Sync" I have "Auto Sync" turned off. I turn it on when it's plugged in and then have it Sync. Then I turn if off once its done charging and back on battery power. I usually sync only 1-2 per week, same as my Skyrocket.
#7- Next, in "Settings" then "Developer Options" (I don't run a bunch of Apps and don't use a lot of "Notifications") so I check the box "Do not Keep Activities" This means when I leave an App, ICS closes the app instead of letting it run in the background, possibly sucking more juice. I saved this one for last, as it impacts the tablet operation the most. If a person uses "Notifications" or likes to multitask with many apps running and want to quickly switch between them, then thus option is not useful. What it does do is free one up from going into "Task Manager" and closing down a bunch of Apps you thought you closed but were only minimized when you exit-ed the App.
#8- Lastly, Usually the biggest drain on the battery is the display. Currently under "Battery" in "Settings" the Display has consumed 65%, with the next closest item "Internet" at 19%, and "Android System" & "Android OS" at 5% each, with everything else at less than 5% combined. Unfortunately, I'm unable to recommend the "Auto-Display" mode, as for me, it makes the display too dark most of the time (click on the "Clock" icon and then check the "Auto" box to engage).
I keep the display setting at about 20-25% as I mostly use the tab 2 indoors. As mentioned above, others' actual mileage may vary with Auto-Display turned on. I use Auto-Display on my Skyrocket, as I use it equally indoors and outdoors. When indoors, I find Auto-Display too dark also, but I live with it because when using the Skyrocket outdoors I find the Auto-Display is a must to see the display in bright sunlight, and therefore watch the battery drain accordingly. To compensation for this, I replaced the stock battery (1,850 mAh) with an extended battery (2,250 mAh) for a 22% capacity increase. This is obviously not a option on the Tab 2.

Do you have an estimation about the screen on-time activity (I hope this is the right expression) with this usage ?
I'm interested to offer this tab to my gf, I'm looking for something small, a smooth experience and that can last at least a heavy day of usage with the screen on.

If you press on the graph it will expand the blue line on the bottom to show screen on time as well as awake and charging.

[Q] Llama won't turn WiFi on with KK (4.4)

I have an LG/Google Nexus 4 from work, hence it's not rooted nor ROMed.
I was happily using Llama to switch things on and off. I used to switch during nights 3G and WiFi off, and on again at mornings.
Ever since I've installed KitKat (Android 4.4), Llama won't switch WiFi back on at mornings, and only a reboot would help (manually turning on won't help either).
I'm borrowing 2 images I've find somewhere on the net, in order to show what I'm getting. WiFi is actually grayed out, as shown in the lower pic, and always saying "Turning WiFi on..." as on the 1st one.

I've got exact same issue. No idea how to fix this.

I've upgraded to v4.4.2 since, but no change...

Try factory reset. Many people have solved this issue with a reset. If possible for you, try factory reset from stock recovery. Please backup apps using Gobackup or some other app from playstore, contacts usually are best backed up with google.
NOTE: As yoor phone isn't rooted, all your user data will be lost. Backup all you photos and other things with your computer.
To facotry reset using recovery :
1. POWER DOWN THE PHONE.
2. AFTER ITS COMPLETELY OFF, HOLD VOLUME DOWN AND POWER BUTTON AT THE SAME TIME UNTIL THE SCREEN SHOWS BOOTLOADER.
3. USING VOLUME UP OR DOWN, SELECT RECOVERY AND PRESS POWER BUTTON.
4. YOU'LL LAND UP IN RECOVERY WITH AN ANDROID LOGO EXCLAMATION.
5. PRESS VOLUME UP AND POWER BUTTON AT THE SAME TIME UNTIL SOME MENUS SHOW
6. SELECT FACTORY RESET AND PRESS POWER BUTTON TO RESET THE PHONE.
7. AFTER ITS DONE, RESTART YOUR PHONE AND SETUP ALL ACCOUNTS AND RESTORE EVERYTHING.
NOTE: Once reset, install Gobackup and restore apps, etc. But remember to copy the Gobackup folder to your computer before resetting and then copy back to the phone.

Switching WiFi on and off manually - works.
With Llama I switch WiFi off during nights, and back on at mornings. But every morning I see the WiFi is not connected, and appear in Orange color instead of Blue. Only switching OFF the device and back ON solves the problem.

That's the reason you need to back up all apps, contacts, sms, etc. Data will be lost for apps that is you'll have to sign into all accounts. Other files like photos, music, etc can be copied to your PC via data cable. Rest is your call

I have something similar on my S4 i9505. I have my rooted phone go into airplane mode 9pm, and come out of airplane mode at 7am, to stop people bothering me at night and to reduce battery life (it now goes down by 2-3% overnight). If I turn airplane mode off manually say at 6.30am Llama turns it half on, leaving the toggle in the quick settings area half green and inoperative.
I have to reboot the phone to fix it.

Are you rooted? Have you given Llama administrator rights on the phone? See a thread here. You could automate restarts at least, which may help.
I'm on 4.2.2 on my S4. I know some things you need root for, because of security changes Google keeps making with Android. That's why I suggested trying to give the app root, even if just as an experiment.

No, my phone is not rooted.
As to admin privileges for Llama - am not sure it ever asked for it. Or is it related to a rooted device only?

You need to allow as device administrator in Security tab and also enable Llama in Accessibility tab, both in Settings. Rooted or not.

I had 4.2.2 and was very proud of Llama, after updating to 4.4.3 and 4.4.4 have this annoying issue...
I tried writing to the developer of Llama but he's not responding anymore...
I actually don't want to wipe data!!!:crying:

I am having same trouble with Wifi controll.
I thought it might appear in relation with multiple wifi activation. So when the wifi is still turned on Llama tries again to switch on an the driver hangs up.
I ran into trouble when switching from AOSP 4.2 to Purity 4.4. I also tried to add a condition to check the wifi-state (independend of connected or not) but there is no option for that.
I really liked Llama very much as it managed all changes to the smartphone itself. No I always miss switching from wifi to 3G Hope it get fixed very soon.
p.s.: i will try a wipe later this day and will edit my post.

I don't know if this could be related to something like you said...but I have quite complex events and I'm pretty sure (I'll double check) I don't trigger twice or more the same event of turning on and off...and this could be even confirmed by the fact that my wireless events works for 2 or 3 days and then the wifi toggle goes gray...anyway don't understand why the developer doesn't answer email anymore, yesterday he released an update, but no answer...
I'll try to change my event to understand, but the same events worked on older android version and still work on 4.4.3 on motoG
PS: you can understand if wifi is turned on by using llama variable, setting one to 1 when you enable and to 0 when you disable, then...before turning it on/of you'll check the value...anyway you can check if connected just using a classic llama event

Yes, it seems only the N4 is affected. And also only newer Android Versions. Did google change the wifi config, driver or controller? When the wifi icon is gray the option in the settings shows "Wlan wird aktiviert..." (Wifi is getting enabled) an the on/off switch is disabled. Is there an App to read linux-log-files? Maybe there is something logged what causes the failure.
I tried Llama with the same ruleset after a complete wipe but the wifi hung up again. So it really seems to correlate with newer android versions for nexus4.
I will write another email to the developer with an link to this thread. Hope we get help

Allow Llama in permissions to change Wi-Fi connectivity
I had to give permission to Llama (Settings > Permissions > Other Permissions > Llama > Change Wi-Fi connectivity) under MIUI8 for it to be able to toggle Wi-Fi on/off.
Otherwise it would be the same as you, WiFi wouldnt turn on/off as specified in the Llama events.

Hi there, I'm writing from my Zuk now and I have a WiFi issue.
As from this screen of battery drain, my WiFi results always on, but it isn't.
I thought it was the "always scanning" feature, but it turned out it was disabled too.
I also tried to turn it on and off again, and it didn't work.
It's 6 pm and my battery is only at 43% whith non a deep use...any clue with that?
Others have this issue? Tried to Google on this forum but I didn't find anything.

After yesterday post, I tried to reboot the phone with WIFI turned OFF.
At the reboot, the WiFi was not in use and the indicator in battery stats was right.
Then i tried to TURN ON the WIFI, was connected several minutes, then i disconnected it, but the indicator in battery stats was still counting it as "WiFi on".
After a sencond reboot, the indication goes on normally as WiFi OFF".
So, my conclusion is: when i turn the WIFI ON, it's start to count as IN USE; then when i TURN IT OFF, it's still counted as IN USE, untill i apply a reboot.
I'm not sure if it's just a bug of indication, or if the WiFi really remain ON, despite of the indicator.
Curious to see if anyone else have this problem.
More, i would like to submit this bug, there is any way to do it?

I suppose it's a google/lollipop bug because I had it on my note 4 and on any version of lollipop on it! Nothing I could do to make it go away!
However, to see this bug on a zuk is kind of a surprise to me because cyanogen usually fixes those nasty bugs!

Man that's what I told you! I have the same bug on my note 4! Exact same behavior! After reboot it goes well until I turn wifi ON again!
But rest assured that's a graphical bug only as far as my investigation revealed! Wifi is turned off and it's not ON!

Well, from your previous message I didn't understand you meant all you wrote here, because you wrote only that you had the same bug on note 4, nothing more ?
I hope they will fix this bug in the following updates.

Disable location scanning. It's not a CM but rather a google apps issue.

How would I go about disabling location scanning?

I have disabled same bro.. But issue still exists..i am on nuclea Rom....

I did some testing myself and found out the issue. Even if you disabled some of those general wifi scanning features some apps have permission to scan for wifi and so you will see wifi is always on in the battery menu. The only way to truly fix that is if you go to privacy guard, if your ROM has it, go to advanced and then go through every single application and disable wifi scan. After doing this whenever i turned wifi on or off it showed in the battery stats. :highfive:
