it never syncs the contacts though...
Coming from iphone and android. This sync business with the htc hd2 is a real pain in teh ass.
It synced fine but now it keeps on telling me to check my exchange settings.
After it initially synced fine with google.
Hardware rocks but man how do people manage with windows mobile is beyond me.
+1 on the question asked need to know as well.

domain leave blank
server address M.google.com
also sync it 2times and everything will be there
you should sign up for www.miqlive.com service and you never have to work about importing or exporting of contacts
just to clarify....you are using exchange right? not the default gmail setup?

I'm wanting to import the "Phone" contacts from my g1. these are synced with my google account. If I look at google voice for that account all these contacts are there. So how should I do that?
you need to setup Outlook for your gmail, the default gmail is IMAP and syncs email only.
go to outlook setup and fill in your username and password as your gmail credentials. the domain can be left blank and when asked set the server address as m.google.com
once completed you will be given a column of tick boxes, be sure to untick the tasks option.
then sync. it may take a couple of syncs to work; i find that if i go to the actual Activesync app and hit sync it seems to work better the first time round.

awesome! thanks. How can I get rid of the activesync that's on there now? like the one I already set up?
just scroll to the email tab, press Menu, Account Options, Delete.
Hi,
I found that using ActivSync to connect to "Microsoft Exchange" using the GoogleSync settings worked for me (server address m.google.com).

NM, solved.
Mines blank. Are you using HTC's setup wizard or creating an Activesync partnership through Activesync itself?
I always just run the setup by going to Settings, Data Services, Activesync. I then find the actual Activesync programme and select the sync option. Sometimes it takes a couple of goes to kick in, and I usually leave the programme open while it's syncing as occasionally when I put the programme into the background it doesn't finish syncing.

Maybe I'm really thick & am missing something here, but what's the point of the "Outlook Email" in WM5?
OK, so it syncs with Outlook on the PC using ActiveSync, fine... but it can therefore only send/receive email when the device is connected & synched to the PC. Although the emails from the PC's Outlook copy over to the device, you can't reply to them with the device when the device is not synched to the PC.
If my XDA Mini S is connected & synched to my PC, I'm not gonna use my XDA to reply to emails, I'd use my PC!
Away from the PC, you can download pop email to a different account on the XDA, but... that account can't then be synched with the PC, only "Outlook Email" can be synched, & it can only be used when synched.
Err...you know you can sync with the server wirelessly via GPRS, EDGE, whatever, right?
Its pretty worhtless unless you use push. Atleast as far as I am concerned. It would be nice if it integrated it with your current pop3 account.
i used to think exactly that untill i changed my work over to use an exchange server then it really comes to life. they should creat a cut down program that lets you sync your desktop outlook over the net imo. then every home user could have push email.

Besides using an Exchange Server, as others have pointed out, bear in mind the same WM OS is also used on non-phone Pocket PCs. In the "good ol' days" you sync'd your PPC in the morning, read and replied to your e-mails on your PPC "on the go" and the next time you sync'd, the (as yet unsent) replies you'd composed during the day would transfer to your desktop PC and get sent by (desktop) Outlook.
If you don't use Exchange, then the Outlook Mobile e-mail box is probably useless to you unless your e-mails are non-urgent enough that you can wait until your next sync before your replies are sent, and your GPRS data charges are punitive enough to justify waiting. I have an unlimited data plan so I now use my Wizard as my primary e-mail device and simply have my IMAP accounts setup on the Wizard and disabled e-mail syncing entirely. (Frankly, since Microsoft disabled desktop sync over wi-fi in WM5 I find myself syncing only once a day or two instead of the several times a day I used to sync my PPC 2K2 and 2K3 devices!)
Basically my desktop PC is now my e-mail "archive" since I'm far more likely to read and reply to all of my e-mail on my Wizard.

question if i may, how do i set it so it syncs the entire email and i don't have to click on "get rest of email" thing on the bottom?
I also sync my phone in the morning and reply to any overnight emails throughout the day, then sync when I get home from work...
Unless it's an important email, in which case, I'll use GPRS to send it from my mobile account.
Push emails from home PC
Hi Guys,
If you have broadband and leave your PC on almost constantly then this may be what you're looking for.
http://www.emoze.com
I haven't tried it yet as I've literally stumbled over it myself but from what I can tell it takes your email as you receive it from your home PC and redirects it to your pda.
I'll let you know if it's any good but it's totally free so check it out for yourselves.
Have fun
Terry
My outlook email syncs (pushmail) with my work-exchange server over gprs, only during working ours.
And for private mail I have a pop3 box checking for new mail every 5 minutes.
Works great!

Yeah, but how much data wil be used by your GPRS connection?
Pertinent connection for syncing and also popping you mailbox every 5 minutes will not be that cheap I think
p.s. Wie is je provider en hoeveel ben jij per maand kwijt hieraan ongeveer?
Does anyone else use IMAP to sync? I have IMAP for my home mail and Exchange push for work, seems to work OK. IMAP uses a lot more data though than ActiveSync, and seems a lot slower, and Desktop's Outlook's IMAP client leaves a lot to be desired, but it is an option, at least.
Don't use Exchange, so it seems like the "Outlook Email" account is fairly pointless for me.

On your desktop PC in Activesync, after syncing but while still connected, double click on "e-mail" in the main pane and an option menu should come up. You can set the size of e-mail to sync there.

thankyou...just tried it out on my Ipod touch..works great.
also when you setup activesync, dont forget to uncheck Task and Emails, as they are not supported by GoogleSync yet.
Also, on Windows Mobile, you cannot sync multiple calendars (but it works on iPhone or Blackberry, which is a shame)

I am using Seven Beta to do my sync. Calender and Push Email from Exchange (through active sync...I'm paranoid), Contacts and Push Email from GMail, Push email from Yahoo, Comcast and Hotmail. It works great and takes less battery then polling for all of these accounts.
thank you!
So,
in a first look, this question may seam as an waste of time.. but, two days ago, i went from e71 to HD2... i find hd2 excelent phone, but some features are not as good as i suposed that would be.
first of all, it took me TWO (?!) days to configure e mail, but man would say it is not a rocket science... lol (i had that well known proxy problems, etc...)..
but now, i find VERY iritating the fact that e mails come to my phone with 5-20 (depends on don't know what...) delay?
I use GMAIL, and in a nut shell - my settings are - automatic every 5 minutes.
It is very strange, because my Nokia E71 was perfect, mail arrived SAME time on mobile and gmail....
what should i do to make it "100% push"?
thank you!
I don't know, but if it took you 2 DAYS to configure the e-mail and went thru proxy issues, it is very likely that at some point you misconfigured something and therefore, it's not working smoothly....
I say so because my gmail works just fine, as it should be. Perhaps you should just delete the account and set it up again from scratch.

thnx for answer.. but, today i went thru ROM update (to 1.48), and i set up whole mobile again (no backup), and same problem again.
i went thru auto setup, not manual, - "like as it should be done"..
if you want push then go through "Outlook" in the Email account wizard and set up your gmail account that way.
if you've set it to check every 5minutes, then it's going to give you a delay.
you can add push gmail through active sync - add server source, through device center or ActiveSync on your pc or through 'data services' on the settings tab of HTC sense. instructions are outlined at Google sync services webpage, you could eh google that.

I don't think that's possible, I also want to add 2 accounts for push e-mail (Exchange and GMail)
As far as I know, you can only use one exchange account.
When you've added push gmail through active sync is there any way to rename the outlook account to Gmail ? Just looks a bit odd going to 'outlook' to read my gmails.
so.. nokia vs htc 1:0..
i had two accounts - two GMAIL accounts, and it was working WITH NO DELAY, with regular setup..
so, very disapointing in HTC's features...

Hi all,
Got a question/problem. I have my HD set up to receive email thru an exchange server but only to get the email. I still want to sync my contacts, calendar, etc. with the info in my desktop outlook. In the activesync window it shows microsoft exchange with email, and windows PC with contacts, calendar, notes and files but it doesn't seem to sync the info with the PC and only the exchange server. Any ideas what I may be doing wrong?
Thanks,

If you run Activesync, then select MENU, then OPTIONS, you should find a page where it details which type of information is sync'd, and with what device. You can then UNtick the items you don't want to sync with your Exchange Server, and tick which items you DO want to sync with your PC!
I'm not by any means an expert on Exchange Server, or ActiveSync, but I have something similar setup on my HTC Trinity.
That's the problem. I have only email checked in the exchange section and have the calendar and contacts and notes checked in the PC section but it seems to ignore the PC section selections and syncs all the exchange stuff even though it's unchecked.
Thanks,
Ho'okani
The other problem is that when I set up the exchange sever and hooked it up to my computer, it deleted all the contacts, calendar and notes in my device. So now I'm trying to figure out how to get all that info back on my device and still use exchange to get my email.
Thanks,
Ho'okani

Hmmm! A tricky one! Just to test this, I setup my HD to sync email only with my companies Exchange server, and it synced quite happily, and didnt delete any other data (contacts etc.), which are still set to sync with my Laptop. I then tried a sync with Laptop and it synced those items (contacts and calender) and gave me no problems at all. (The only thing it DID do was enforce my companies security policy on the HD - which is an enforced PIN entry every hour of non-use. This is easily overriden by a Registry Hack anyway).
So to answer your question, I am afraid I do not now why you are sufferring this problem, as I cannot get it to occur on my HD - perhaps there are differences in the ROM you might be using - my Radio and ROM version details are contained in my signature (below) -- are yours the same?!
it is weird. I've gone so far as to delete the exchange server, delete the device and try to set up the partnership again and I still can't get my contacts and calendar back into the device. The exchange calendar items still remain on my device and no contacts.
Thanks,
Ho'okani

So will this phone sync with outlook? Don't see any apps on the sprint or samsung site.
Use Activesync via Hotmail to sync w/Outlook contacts and calendar for free OTA.
there is no way to go directly via the cable? I find that syncing via net changes fields. + I hate hotmail
Well you don't need to use it for email.
I've never had an issue with Exchange Activesync screwing up fields between devices. The Hotmail implementation just happens to be the cheapest one out there.
So in the Epic there is a way to select hotmail as a contact source? or does it have to be done through the email config.?
found a rant at sprint about this:
http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/208546
Looks like samsung has an app that was released for another carrier.
Set it up as a corporate account.
What a PITA,
this is quickly turning into a major headache. Sync shouldnt be that big of a deal. Kies is so bloated.
Sync isn't a big deal if you use Activesync OTA. It happens automagically in the background and everything is up to date.
Using a cable to sync is so 1990.

how and where?
I'll monkey with it some more later today, looks like you can set-up the hotmail email as a corporate account on the EPIC 4G, on the PC side I saw an app from microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...89-af2e-41f9-a175-f93e1377959f&displayLang=en
that should allow synchronization from PC to hotmail. I'll whip-up a tutorial later today after I can test it out.
I'll be following this closely.
I was able to get all of my Outlook contacts loaded without losing anything (i.e pictures), by saving them all as .vcf files from Outlook, placing them on the SD card under a "contacts" folder, then on the Epic telling it to import all of the .vcf files from the SD card. That let me get all my Outlook contacts loaded without having to push them up to a Gmail account, then back down to the phone, losing some of the extra stuff Outlook stores, but it's a static operation, meaning if I change a contact on the phone or in Outlook they're out of sync then, and also no syncing of the calendar.
Hopefully syncing Outlook to Hotmail via the add-in, and then using the Hotmail to sync the phone will bring over all the info.

Settings -> Accounts -> Manage Accounts on the Epic (or any other Android device).
Add account and choose "corporate."
On the PC side, grab the Hotmail Outlook connector (free from MS) to sync Outlook directly. Or use Windows Live Mail which syncs natively to Hotmail by default if you don't want to pay for Outlook.
When I try it keeps say can't connect to server. It puts as "\my username" then has sever name as hotmail.com . Then I get a "unable to connect to server" what am I doing wrong. Thanks

how did you go about getting the contact files (currently *.msg) into the *.vcf format?
I kept trying over and over and all I would get is something like " unable to connect server" I finally gave up. I went to the gmail account they make you setup to use marketplace. I when to setting, import contacts and put in my hotmaill account and it got all of the contact. The went to my phone, went to accounts, found my gmail account and synced my gmail account on my phone. Now all of my contacts are on my phone. I not as woried about my calander. I will just use google calander to add my dates. The year is almost over so it's not that much to update manually.
