hello,
it is possible to download the map from google map? or only part of the country?
Only for use with GPS and without being connected via the data?
Thank you
Dont think so,... But Co-pilot apparently does that very well. It is not free though.
to the users of google_map is free ...
How stupid he does not put the option to download the map of the country ....
I hope we will have one days

I think that google maps would take up vast amounts of storage space for a single city just because of the amount of information there is - satellite view, etc.
Actually this is possible.
Using Google Maps offline in Android
Use Trekbuddy to download the maps of the region of your interest (in Trekbuddy select Rmaps format before downloading). Install Rmaps on your HTC then copy the file created by Trekbuddy to HTC.
Rmaps allows you to have kind of offline Google Maps. You will be able to display your location on the map and browse but not search or get navigation instructions.

hello,
you've already tested?
I install maverick: http://www.codesector.com/maverick.php pro version
my problem is that I could not get the map on the screen?
I created the map, but the file or save?
or should I save the file: Google Earth? I put in the root of the SD card and it does not work?
thank you for helping me

Yep, it works. After Trekbuddy downloads your map (it could be hundreds of thousand of tiny PNG files depending on the size of your region and selected zoom levels) it compiles it into a single .sqlitedb file. Put this file in /sdcards/rmaps/maps and then open Rmaps, go to Settings > User defined maps and choose your file. Go back to Rmap main screen press Menu > Maps and you should see your map in the list - select it and off you go.
correct me if there was error:
Map source : Google earth

thx

Map source : Google earth - OK.
zoom level : 16. You may want to choose more than one level. Even if you download the finest zoom maps you will not be able to zoom out unless you downloaded upper zoom level. The maps are stored as bitmaps and cannot be scaled. So I suggest you to choose also 15, 14, 13 up until, say, 7. Check the zoom scroll in the upper left of the map to see what levels you are interested in. Anyway zoom 16 is the one generating most of the files.
atlas content : Add selection - OK
atlas setting --> I'm not at home right now and I don't remember exactly what settings I used here. Try BigPlanet SQLite. I don't remember if this is it or there should have been Rmaps format and it disappeared in the last version. I'll check it when I get home.
First try to download with smaller zoom like 6 so you can quickly check if it's working.

For Maverick it's 'Maverick atlas format' and you should tick ALL the boxes to 16 (0,1,2,3 etc.) otherwise you only have 16 level map
I also want to use RMaps but can't because of that SQL lite error (this is despite following the instructions saying to put a dll file inside the folder)

Well, this is exactly as instructions say:
1. Download the missing SQlite library from http://www.ch-werner.de/javasqlite/javasqlite-20100131-win32.zip
2. Extract sqlite_jni.dll and sqlite.jar and put both files in the directory where Trekbuddy jar is located.

To have different zoom levels you need to select and download them in Trekbuddy. If you only clicked the check box near zoom level 16, for instance, this is the only zoom level you'll get in Rmaps. If you want the ability to zoom in AND out you need to create a map with all the zoom levels so go back to Trekbuddy and check all the level you wish to see in Rmaps (I myself use levels from 7 to 16) and create a new map.

cool. Will this work with google nav (burt variation)?
It is not very effective if it doesnt show navigation.
I am using google maps brut but it doesnt seem to display maps while offline. I have checked the settings and have ticked the option to display maps from cache but dont know what the problem is.

resco explorer come with a built in encrypt file software.
Or Airscanner Encrypter to encrypt whole folders easily.
perhaps make the folder "hidden" then take the view hidden files function away so that the general browser doesnt find it.
i also apply a name that will not attract attention such as work or parents .... or system or temp cache or similar, anything but say porn xxx look here

nothing wrong with a bit or even a lot of porn
if it offends people, they shouldnt be looking, and even if they found it, they should choose not to look

I actually use Airscanner for er..... encrypting stuff that.....er I'd rather wasn't....... er easy to find. <coughs>
I can vouch it works well under WM5, and it appears to work by using multi-pass bitwiping to ensure there is no trace of the original files prior to encyption.
Odd thing is though, I'm sure it used to be free, but now they seem to charge for it. My advice is look at free download sites for a copy.
Not sure where the software came from, but my press and hold menus provide encryption, I think its resco explorer.
I can use normal file explorer to "hide" files from general view, but I noticed in Resco explorer, the hidden files are still clearly visible, so not sure if there is a bug in the resco app for hidden files, but they are definitely hidden from the normal ppc file explorer. add that to resco encryption, I think should be sufficient.
Good (and bad) news - looks like we won't be needing this software anyway:

There is a program called KeePass which works on most devices, relevant here is the Desktop and PocketPC. The datafiles are transferable between both devices. I have used it on my Universal without problems. I have actually been using this program for a long time, I keep the DB on a USB key and a copy of the program. This means that when I plug in my key the password safe opens and asks for the password, or I can run it from the key if on another machine.
As for encrypting the pr0n, what about a good old .RAR archive? The version that I use (Pocket RAR 3.50) will encrypt and decrypt folders and files, quite fast too.
If you're talking about a large stash this won't work, but if you're only carrying round < 10MB you could always use the ExtendedROM partition and leave it hidden.
This means that you could have all your files in readable format, but without knowing the name that you used for the partition they couldn't access it without searching the registry for the name.
Not many people are going to search the registry for a name they don't even know exists.
This might sound like a difficult thing to do, but Buzz made an unlocker and the registry change for the name is in the thread.
Once you have done your hard reset and loaded the ExtendedROM you don't need the stuff in there anymore, and can use the space for storage.
"stash"
I agree, I know "people" that use a zip file for text, and otherwise just buried folders.
How's abouts we make a small app to render files unusable? You could take the filename, pre-pend it to the file in binary to render it unusable, using a simple XOR encryption for those few bytes. Then give it a generic filename and extension, eg Sheet1.prn.
When launched, .prn files will launch our decrypter, asking for the password. I suppose you could possibly memory map the decrypted file to even ensure an unencrypted version doesn't exist on the device for any considerable period (ie until you close the decrypter).
just an idea.

Hello all,
I just start a new project: JVTrip.
My idea is let you track yourself while you are in a trip, walking, cycling, driving or just watching your childs moves And then export the path to Google Earth.
You can add notes, costs or pictures to your path. These informations will be stored with the GPS location where you added them. When you export your track to Google Earth, all information will be there as markers.
Also the application will tell you the total cost of your trip, the distance you traveled, the current speed, altitude and position. There is an internal compass to help you to know where the true north is (not magnetic north).
Because WM6 bases software can't take pictures I just let you to select pictures you have in your device. Of course you can take pictures with the application started.
Another use of this project is for professional purpose. People who work with geo referenced material would use this application to register their works and discovers.
Thinking on that professional use I added to the project the feature to show the traveled distance, the current speed, altitude, position and a compass for people knows where the true north is. Choosing between Imperial or Metric measurement systems the user will be able to convert meters in feets, km in miles and more.
The project works with Windows Managed GPS or with External GPS devices. With WM GPS, the user will be able to use more than one GPS based software at the same time.
How it works:
First of all you must create a new trip typing the name of the trip, the start and end points. After that you just need to click in Start Trip.
There is an integration with Google Maps! When your GPS is fixed just click Where Am I and the application will show you an image from Google Maps with your current position. The same feature works to see where you added notes, costs or pictures.
What you need:
- .NET 3.5
- SQLServerCE
Where can I find the cab file?
There is no official site yet. But you can download it here.
You can install a GPS based Compass downloading here.
Keep JVTrip up to date!
There is an integration with AppToDate. This application verify if configured softwares are up to date or not. If not, you are alerted, and invited to download the new version! Very cool and useful.
You can download AppToDate here.
After install AppToDate, please download and run JVTrip to configure AppToDate.
Try this and don't forget a new version never more!
--> It is a work in progress. In future versions I will make a lot more.
Support this project
You can support this project making a donation clicking here or clicking the banners in the project website: http://jvtrip.sourceforge.net (not working yet).
Cheers,
Joubert Vasconcelos

No, I use the same library.
Hi,
I just released version 0.1.0-3 with bug fixes.
Regards,
Joubert
Useful set of freeware software from a Dutch company specialising in navigation software. Primarily used for marine mapping but can easily be used onland as well.
Basic concept is that you scan in your map to a picture file on your PC, then using the calibration app you triangulate three known GPS coords, and then you have a usable map to download to the mobile app running on the X1.
http://www.stentec.com/en/support/downloads
DKW Builder 1.2.4.1 Lite - calibrates the scanned map
DKW Manager 1.3.11.0 - manages map sets, and the loading to the phone
WinGPS 4.0.7.0 Mobile Lite - the app to be loaded on the phone
I have used these for some time, originally with XDA and bluetooth GPS.
Copy satellite images, stitch these in with road maps etc.
Enjoy.

Efficasoft GPS Utilities is way better for this, since you don't need a PC app to load the map. You can directly load any picture file and it only takes 2 points to calibrate (Which makes sense to me), so you also have the possibility to actually walk to a point you know on the map and use your GPS reading directly. It also comes with compass and stuff - the only disadvantage is that you have to pay for it and there is no keygen (so far - I hope there will be one soon).
Tks Firewall for this pointer to Efficasoft GPS, it looks like a neat tool, with tons of features. As with both apps, I much prefer maps loaded on the phone rather than the continuous online loading from Google or Multimap.
The Stentec set of apps are more elaborate as they are targetted for sailors who need greater level of detail, and are dealing with multiple sets. As freeware I think Stentec give a great level of functionality. Their pro versions are in the 100's of euro.
Whether you walk to a point to get the GPS reading or copy a known ref point from Google Earth it doesnt really matter. Google will allow you to quickly pick distant points on the map which ultimately give you better accuracy. It will also allow you to prepare you map in advance, you dont want to spend time when you hit the ground driving/walking just to calibrate a map, me thinks.
For calibration it is much better to have three ref points, and the further apart the better. A triangle will provide a more accurate dimensioning than a straight line. Any minor error close in, is exploded further out.
There's also GPSvp which is opensource and available via google code..
It does use google or live maps, and openstreetmap, but it caches them so you don't always need a net connection when you're out and about.
It also can use garmin maps, which is good as there are some free ones around in that format.
It also has a desktop version, which means you can download all the "tiles" you need on the pc then transfer them across to the x1 for field use..
It's now being updated pretty regularily as well which is great .

I agree. I use geological/survey mapping for a living. There are a number of specialised, proprietary programs on my device, but a generally available one is PathAway (now version 5). You need a 3-point calibration from Google or more accurately digital topography maps as sold by Govt Departments, but you can then use JPG's or ECW's as a base map to keep the size manageable.
But the z-value (altitude) from PDA's is not really accurate at all. x,y-values are good to about 2m generally.
Of course it depends on you whether it's better to load maps from your PC or from your PDA. If you really are a sailor and you have to set up a big region, the PC is your friend - my reason for using such an application however is different. I don't have a boat, so for street navigation I rely on Garmin XT Mobile. I would use tools like Efficasoft GPS Utilities for example if someone gives me a map of a specific region - offroad. Say for a treasure hunt or something like this. You can take a Snapshot of the map with your camera, then load the picture, walk a few meters to determine two well-known points and you're ready to go.
gpsVP looks to be a fantastic project. I have installed it onto the X1 and will try to get to grips with it over the following days.
First thing is to read a dummy-guide.

lol yeah, but it's pretty logical to play with.
First issue with gpsVP is similar to the one I had with the Wayfinder app.
If the app is active when the phone is turned off, the GPS keeps active and drains the phone battery overnight. And it is not a graceful discharge, it takes every ounce of power and requires some recharging before I can even power up the phone again.
Lesson: dont leave a GPS app active when you turn off.

LOL yep, phone is separate to the functions of the PDA..
It's in the Play Store now: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.kiwix.kiwixmobile
but not compatible with the NST (requires Android 3.0 and up)
Is it worth uploading the apk here for folks to test with? Or is this simply a matter of hurry up and wait?
This is what I just sent to [email protected] :
I was ecstatic to see Kiwix in the Google Play store today. However, it showed as not compatible with my rooted Nook Simple Touch (NST). I was able to borrow a friend's Asus Transformer to install Kiwix to, then pulled the .apk from it and transfered it to the NST via a microSD card. Unfortunately, I got a "Parse Error: There is a problem installing the package" immediately upon attempting to install.
The NST runs Android 2.1, with an 800 x 600 display.
I am willing to beta-test any fixes for the NST. You will also find a vibrant user & development forum @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1198
Thank you so much for making Kiwix available on Android. I believe this could be THE killer-app for the NST hardware!

I too got "Parse Error" while trying to install on a Gingerbread mobile (so that I can convert my old mobile into a offline wikireader).
Have you find any solution for this, if so please let me know. Thanks.
The dev replied, politely informed me not to expect a solution. However, in the meantime I found Aard Dictionary. It works wonderfully on the NST, and has much more recently updated Wikipedia libraries than Kiwix. Be prepared for a long wait to download the libraries, though, even on broadband.

Currently I had downloaded the zim files of Kiwix (18GB), currently I will stick to it as I am near to my download quota for this month. Later (may be next month) I will download the aard dictionary files.
Btw I had successfullly installed jellybean on my old mobile (though some features like camera are not working) and installed Kiwix and using it.
For what it's worth, an aarddict dev stated a few months ago that he was considering a move to the .zim format (see this ) . I could only suggest contacting the dev for a status update. Perhaps he might have a beta you could test?
By the way, I am curious to know what .zim language/dataset is 18GB?

Thanks for the info, I will contact the aard developer.
Regarding the size of .zim in Kiwix, there are two types of wikipedia datasets
1. Non Indexed zim (10-11 GB)
2. Indexed zim (18-19GB)
In terms of content wise both are same (updated in 2012), but the advantage with Indexed zim is that it allows to search even in the content where as with Non indexed zim, it only allows you to search in the titles of articles (so size is less).
One advantage with Kiwix is it allows you to create indexing for non Indexed zim on your local machine, so you can save a lot of bandwidth.
What I found with the simple wiki (around 130 MB) file in Aard is that it also works similar to Non indexed zim (only searching in the titles). Please correct me if I am wrong ?
Aard allows to search inside each article in the newer versions. There is a dedicated search button when an article is opened.
I am trying kiwix right now and it seems to work pefectly. I will post if i encounter any problems.

I love Aard, and today downloaded v 1.6.6.1 to my NST. I do not see a dedicated search button or any way of searching inside each article, nor is there a Settings or Options button.
Searching would be wonderful in Wikipedia and Wiktionary. Have I missed something?

Might be, that this option is only avaible in android 4 and higher. The search button is accessed through the menu icon introduced with android 4.

Today, Microsoft removed the "Message History" section from my Outlook account, so I can no longer use a well-known trick to view my sms history. I notice that in the WP8.1 emulator, I can now log in to my MS account and my sms history are synced to the emulator. I am trying to take advantage of this feature to retrieve the file that stores my sms from the emulator image.
So far, I have managed to merge the emulator snapshot with the base .vhd and mount the resulting virtual disk to view all the files. Hell, I can even decompile the stock apps to view their source code...However, I cannot find where my sms are stored. There is one suspicious folder that has modification time at the moment the sms are synced.
"K:\SharedData\Comms\Unistore\data" where K is the Data volume.
In this folder, I can find all my emails in plain text and a bunch of other files in binary/encrypted text. I hope the binary/encrypted files are not my sms. Anyone has any idea?
I got the answer to my own problem thanks to this post. http://resources.infosecinstitute.com/windows-phone-digital-forensics-2/
The name of the file is still store.vol but it is in another location compared to WP7.5. You can find it in Data\Users\WPCOMMSSERVICES\APPDATA\Local\Unistore . If you want to follow my steps and there are any questions, feel free to post below.
Edit: now I need to find a way to read this EDB database file, including the date and time the sms were sent.

Hmm, don't know but EDB Files are used on Exchange 2003 Servers.
I had a Software to open such files. But this piece of Software is really expensive.
When i'm in the Office I will look for the name of the Software.

that file is also the exchange database used in windows mobile. I heard the format is different for different purposes and MS has never provided the documentation for this format.

If you trust me an there is nothing important in this edb file you can Upload them to an Hoster/dropbox
and give me the Link so i will try to open the edb file.
thats the Software I use:
http://www.krollontrack.de/produkte-und-software/kostenlose-software/registrierung/
There is a possibilty to test them.
But we (my Company) have a full version with add ons. So I think there is a bigger chance.
EDB (on WP7, at least) was Embedded DataBase. The API for them is documented here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa914733.aspx
I know WP8 has some mobile DB APIs (even though it uses NT, not CE) although I haven't tried them at all. You could also try using the Mail API (MAPI) http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/cc842118(v=office.15).aspx for documentation.
There was a homebrew app on WP7 (hosted here on XDA) that extracted SMS for backup, because there wasn't an SMS backup feature. I don't know if it would be useful with WP8, even as a reference, though it may be worth checking to see if the source for it is available.

I created a throw away outlook account and send a test message from the emulator to phone number 555-555-5555 (Yes you can send it in the emulator even though that will never been sent). The content of the test message is "this is a test". With a hex editor, I have verified that the message existed in the store.vol file at address A0233. You can download the whole folder here https://www.mediafire.com/?4id993y8gnii3v9
This is the screenshot of the folder

Hi, thanks for helping. The first link is for windows mobile 6.5 CE so I'm not sure if it applies. I will check out the second link. I have also made a post in the thread about extracting WP7 SMS to ask for the source code.

Thanks for testing it though.
Edit: found this article about reverse-engineering Embedded Database. This looks like a NSA personnel's job...

Sorry, I should have been more clear: WP7 used CE internally, so the WM6.5 APIs worked on it. WP8 uses NT instead of CE, but has some of the embedded database APIs anyhow (because the code was imported straight from WP7, maybe?) so it might still work. You'd need to find the library with the relevant exports, though; that part of the documentation will be wrong for WP8.
