I have my mobile number and my Google voice number tied to my nexus one phone. There is a setting to allow me to call using either number. When calling with my Google voice number will it use my tmobile minutes? If so, is there a way to get around this? I read up on Gizmo5 but currently registration is closed.

I think one way people were using it was to assign their GV number as one of their Fave 5's, but unless you were able to grandfather a MyFaves plan over, you'll have to wait for Google to launch their VOIP part of Google Voice. You 'can' use Google Voice to help save you money though...

2) Make an outbound call via the internet that is routed to your landline phone. For example, you have wifi but not cell service and you want to make a free long-distance call. You request that GV call your landline phone first and then connect you to the other person.

I also wanted to confirm that is correct, even without a previous invite, the app will automatically grant you an invite.
I've been trying to use google voice for my N1 and have it send me my voicemails as emails/sms messages. Whenever I do the setup it tells me that they couldn't update my fowarding and to contact my carrier. Well obivously AT&T is NOT going to help me if I call. Anyone here have the same issue with AT&T? Anyone know what settings need to be changed so that this funciton works properly?
I have att and I'm getting the voice mail as both text and email. I didn't do anything different from how I had it configured previously.
I have TMo, and I had to setup my forwards automatically. Couldn't use google voice to do it. Hope that helps.
I'm on t-mo and google voice setup gives me an error when setting up voicemail, i manually did it following the instructions on the website and my voicemails forward to GV, but I was wondering, when the setup works properly from the phone, does the voicemail button in the phone app call into your google voicemail or your carrier voicemail? the way i have it now it calls my carrier voicemail.
mine did the setup automatically with att. att is still going to help you, they want your money, threaten to switch to tmobile, like half the people who baught this phone if they don't.
I logged on to the google.com/voice and it gave me some numbers to type in for a manual setup works like a charm now!
havent gotten my n1 yet so excuse the question on this
tmo has me on flexpay, calling later to see about migrating to post but to be honest, credit sucks so i dont see it happening.
the problem with flexpay is, they do not allow call forwarding.
so if i am using the google voice app/dialer, (have fav5, was going to setup the google voice as one for calling to it to not use minutes)
if i setup google voice to forward to my cell, give my google voice number out from now on and have people update my phone number to gvoice. could i just entirely bypass the need to use call forwarding this way
correct me if im wrong, but the google voice app will take over as my dialer, contacts, etc. so anytime i make a call, it will go through gvoice and anyone with callerid would see my gvoice number. so unless i give my tmo number out or someone doesnt update my number, i would never have a call come in on my tmo number except gvoice forwarded calls..... right?
also this would allow me to drop my unlimited text messaging as well since txt msgs would all go through gvoice instead of tmo? (i read this one elsewhere and just want to confirm that would work)

under call settings> voice mail service I see two options, carrier, and google.
in voicemail settings it shows google local phone number, and under that a sign out option for my gmail addy
I don't think google voice saves you money yet... it still uses minutes, sms and data. I think the idea is that in the "future" we will only need data plans.

It doesn't use your plan SMSes, I don't think. All you have to use is data. GV SMS is free to US numbers.
well i called tmobile and in changing from flex to post pay, lost my fav5, lost my 5.99 internet. but thanks to freelancersunion.org i got 10%/month discount
50 extra whenever minutes, internet on 2 lines (was only 5.99 on 1 line before) and now i'm on post pay with call forwarding, YAY... paying 7$ more than i was

Go to Google.com/voice and go to settings and click activate under your phone number. It will then have you dial a numb
er on your phone that will manually set the voicemail forward. I'm on Att and this method works for me. I could not get it to auto setup either BTW...
So here is what I did... I now have a working VOIP phone service via my T-Mobile Tab..
-- Get the hacked Skype App (allows 3G calling) http://www.megaupload.com/?d=156KWZVH

-- Go to skype.com and setup an account
-- Order a Skype Internet Number (it's $30 for a year right now -- normally $60)
-- Add a Skype calling plan ( I went with $2.99 a month for unlimited calling)
-- Set Skype to display your Google Voice Number (Caller ID Settings)
-- Set Google Voice to forward all calls to your Skype number
-- Go into Google Voice App and set it up to use your Skype number for voicemail notifications.
It works and it works pretty darn well...
Pros:
--Incoming and outgoing voice capabilities
--Unlimited calling in the US and Canada for $2.99 a month
--With 3G data plan you always have phone functions to dial out and receive
--Use Google Voice for SMS messages and you only have the one number.
Cons:
--If you don't want to use the Google Voice number for SMS then you will have 2 numbers. The one that came on your Tab that is used for SMS/MMS and a number for phone usage.
--Price for this to work per year amounts to $66 ($30 for the Skype number and $36 for the unlimited plan) Not really a con if you consider this is the total cost for a year of unlimited cell (VOIP) calls from you Tab
--If you use Google Voice for SMS it does not do MMS
Here is how it works...
When someone calls your Google Voice number it forwards it to the Skype number and the Tab rings...
When you call someone it displays your Google Voice number...

Skype can be sketchy if on a slow or weak 3G or Wifi connection... I have had no problems with it yet though...
Yes, no 911 calling.... But you can program your local police / fire / EMS non emergency dispatch center number as a contact... That's what I did... Granted it's not as fast to get answered as 911, but it is a suggestion...
I don't see why you could not forward the previous cell # to GV then have it forwarded to Skype. Then set the Caller ID in Skype to display your previous cell number... Should work...
I might give this a try and see how I like.... since the phone flashing seems to be stuck at 2G plus a few other problems at this point....

I decided to do this route as opposed to flashing the other way... Flashing the Euro ROM does still have issues and even once they are worked out, I can't see a US carrier adding voice to the Tab... Even with flashing the Euro ROM you will still need another SIM card to use that has voice functions enabled on it (hence, a different number like this process requires)...
Many people already have my GV number so this was also an easy way to get phone function without much effort... And at $66 a year for unlimited voice, I don't see a carrier plan even coming close to that...

I did this for months on my old Milestone (Droid) due to me being in Canada and everyone I knew being back in the US (and all calls to the US are int'l long distance via cell) until I found a way to make GV work here in Canada via normal phone lines.
Yes, call quality via Skype is sketchy at times, depending on connection quality, and there's ALWAYS lag.
Call forwarding works fine.
I wouldn't sweat 911, but then again I have almost no respect for that service anyway.
How stable has this been running for the ones using it?

You'll need some sort of VOIP to make it work, but it doesn't have to be Skype.
Keep in mind, Google Voice is NOT a VOIP service, it's a fancy call forwarding and voicemail service that also lets you pick a free US phone number for life.
And folks, there's always Sipdroid and a SIP number service (there's quite a few besides Gizmo)

I currently only have the Google Voice app installed (no hacked Skype). When I go into my contacts (app which came with Tab) and I click on a contact, and then click the message icon, a little screen pops up asking if I want to complete the action using Messaging or Google Voice. Furthermore, you can check the "Use by default for this action" to always use Google Voice for texting. When I click Google Voice the text shows up to other people as my Google Voice number.
If the trick in this thread can use your Google Voice number as what shows up to other people as your caller ID, wouldn't this simplify you down again to one number (the Google Voice number)?
the problem with this is skype doesnt work with Bluetooth headset. so you either have to get a WIRED headset or use speaker phone which means no privacy

Yeah, and I love that app....
About 5 minutes after I turned my Tab on I got a text asking if I wanted to buy some chronic/Mex from someone who obviously didn't know their contact's phone no. had changed!
But the app is great!

Good point, decisions decisions! For me I may be willing to sacrifice MMS for the simplicity of one phone number. I would justify it by using video calling, YouTube posting, and Facebook/Picasa pictures. I'm already giving up the native Email app because it puts weird labels on my Gmail emails instead of archiving emails like the Gmail app. So much for "native tablet optimized apps."

So I called Sprint. Man I wish I hadn't called Sprint. The lady said that something was wonkey with my account and that the workaround was for them to port my number to Google, issue me a new Sprint number and to set up GVoice on integration that way.
Well they ported my number to "Google" but at no time asked me which account to attach it to. It is just gone as far as I'm concerned.
I've lost my number and Sprint can't find it. They say they have tride to port it back and it failed. They said they have to wait two hours to try again.
Holy WTFPONY Batman. What do I do now???

I got my number ported back in and my phone reprogrammed. The folks at Sprint don't seem to have any idea that they have an integration deal with Google. Sprint...shame on you...great idea, great feature, POOR rollout!

so.. all it is doing is moving your sprint number to your google voice, or making your google voice number your sprint... and then you get the google voice visual voicemail.. well.. isnt that the way already?? what are the benefits/cons?
I think the main difference is you're now able to associate your current Sprint number as your actual Google Voice number without having to actually port the number and get a new number with Sprint (and thus canceling your Sprint account in the process).
I have a Google Voice number separate from my Sprint number. I'm assuming when I get this option and choose to move my Sprint number over I'll lose my current Google Voice number.
I guess the question is what happens if I decide to leave Sprint later? Is that number associated with Sprint or with Google at the end of the day? Will I need to do a port in order to keep it associated with me? That's unclear.
i would think it would stay in google voice.. if gv had an empty button.. i would probably do it.. but im not going through 10 a time and deleting history/trash etc..
Well i hope itstays with Google voice, you still get mms on my phone but the rest it works on Google voice app for iPhone, i use it for the last 1 hour not problems. I just can make calls from Google voice iPhone app and idk about android app tho

Same error here. I've had my GV number since launch.
Called Sprint, got escalated about seventy billion times, nobody seems to actually know what the hell "Google Voice Sprint integration" is. They either tell me that it's not their problem, contact Google; or that if the Google Voice app is installed and working, then that's it and it's "integrated" (even though it's not). They eventually told me it's "because my account is corporate" and hung up on me when I told them that is not true.
I have a discount because of my employer, but a coworker has the same thing and got his integrated earlier this week, so the corporate thing shouldn't be an issue.
VERY FRUSTRATED!
edit: To be clear, the benefit to "integration" option #2, (keeping your existing Google number), is that calls made directly over CDMA (either without the GV app, with a non-smartphone on Sprint, or when no data connection is present) display your Google Voice number as its caller ID. This enables: quicker dialing of numbers without the GV Android app intercepting and routing the call through GV; using mobile-to-mobile minutes for outgoing calls; and (presumably) SMS caller-ID spoofing, allowing us to use Handcent or any SMS app instead of the GV app for texts.
I'm getting the same error when trying to integrate. It sucks because I was looking forward to this. I really hope it isn't because I've got a discount through my employer, because my line is definitely not a corporate line
I got this message the first time I tried as well. I had it check my number again, and on the second attempt it worked. I also have a discount from my employer. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Even if you do it the other way around (your sprint # becomes GV #) you get all the nice blocking features you would normally get with GV. Seems win win to me.

So I had the same error, called up Sprint, and they said that it's because of my municipal discount.
"You have a type g-4 government municipal individual account, and all type g accounts are banned from the integration," were the tech's words exactly. Funny thing is, I don't have a government account, government plan, or anything. Just a 20% discount for being a part-time municipal employee.
Now to wait for the business center to open so I can yell at them... *sigh*

Calls coming into your sprint number do not go through the gv servers first so the only google service available is the voicemail. I had a few numbers saved in gv as blocked but they'd still ring through because the person was dialing my sprint number. Since I integrated, no more unwanted calls
I have yet to get this option in Google Apps GV.
I just got off the phone with Sprint (after being transferred 4 times because no one had any idea what I was talking about) and confirmed that I cannot access this feature because I have a "Public Sector Government account." Come on Sprint...I'm an individual with my own account, don't punish me because of where I work!
I wonder if you have to deactivate GV on your phone first and then try and activate with the sprint button. I am on a corporate plan as well but I haven't tried this yet for fear of losing the whole feature all together.

maybe i dont get it but i just dont see the advantage to this. i already use google voice for voice mail and i dont really care if my txts forward there because gvoice isnt capable of mms anyway. and i have free calling over wifi. other than the blocking unwanted calls, whats the advantage? im with the dirtyshroomz on this one.
Edit: Perhaps using the word (Re)activate would clear some confusion. I chose to use 'Activate' since I had been unable to get my existing Google Voice account up and running on my Pixel from day one. These were the steps that I personally used, with Verizon as my carrier, to (Re)activate or "jump start" my existing Google Voice account to run on my Pixel. For me personally, this was the only thing that worked. And at the moment it seems to be working for others as well. As mentioned below, the full setup for Verizon may be different, and the full setup and "reactivation" for lack of a better word, is indeed different for other carriers, could be similar, I honestly don't know.
I'm on Verizon, but this should work for any carrier -
1. Go to Google Voice on PC, click the 'Settings' cog/hamburger icon
2. Under the 'Phones Tab' it will say 'Forwards calls to:' you should see your phone's phone number and under that click 'Edit'.
3. Click 'Show Advanced Settings' still under 'Phones Tab'.
4. Scroll down to 'Forwarding Options' and click 'Activate'.
5. Now you should have a pop-up window with instructions to call your GV number. Mine (Verizon) instructs me to add a *71 in front of my GV number -
*71555-555-5555 - then click send and follow the prompts when your phone rings.
6. Enjoy Google Voicemail again.

In addition to all this, here are some additional steps I had to take in order to get Google Voice to stick. I believe these instructions from this point on are Pixel specific, but please do not quote me on this -
Additional Steps (I took) to get Google Voice up and running on the Pixel (the following steps will be done from your phone)
1. Head to the Phone app, swipe over to Voicemail and approve Visual Voicemail.
2. Then head to GV app and go to Settings and check on Voicemail Display.
3. While still in GV, run through your Sync and Notifications and check what applies to you.
4. Then return to your Phone app (your voicemail may go a little crazy at this point due to syncing, mine does), go to Settings>Calls and turn off Video Calling and Voice Privacy.
5. Then go to your overall phone settings for the phone itself, and tap More>Cellular Network Settings and turn off Advanced Calling.
I think that is everything. If anyone has any additional input at all, that'd be helpful. Come to think of it, a per carrier set of instructions would be nice if anyone would like to help...just throwing this out there, if it already exists, a link would be nice.

I use GV as much as my regular number for incoming and outgoing phone calls. I also use each equally for texting, it depends on who it is. I use my real phone mostly for friends and family that have had my number before GV. I use GV for new contacts and business related stuff; the reason being I like to able to record business phone calls without an extra app, simply tap 4 during the call and it starts recording. And yes, I use GV for voicemail too, mainly due to transcripts and customization. I rarely have to listen to my vm, unless someone was drunk, then the transcripts are pretty bad...funny, but bad. Why do you ask?

Many people used GV to handle VVM on Verizon for the previous Nexus phones as it wasn't supported. However, VVM on Android 7.1+ is working with Verizon out of the box, as long as you have it enabled on your plan.

Ahh, no I only use GV. But I do use it with VVM on the Pixel. Actually, maybe you can help me with something which has only mildly bothered me, so I haven't dug too deep yet....does VVM provide a transcript like like GV does? Let's be honest, it really isn't all that visual. evobyte was asking this earlier as well.

I believe you need the Premium VVM from Verizon for that - I only have the basic (free) and it does not. I know that is a feature that puts GV ahead of VVM, but I found GV to not be very reliable when I was on my N5X.
This is a link to Google's support for GV. https://support.google.com/voice/answer/165656?hl=en If you click were it says additional help for Verizon customers you'll see you need to dial 3 numbers w/your GV # included (it forwards calls in 3 different types of situations). I did this and set to show visual messages in the phone app which basically gave GV its own tab. And, I don't have premium service from Vzn.
If you are having trouble configuring Google voicemail on Verizon, you can make the switch manually by dialing these three activation codes:
*71[Your Google Voice number]
*90[Your Google Voice number]
*92[Your Google Voice number]
