Hello all,
I'm from Spain and I use movistar as provider (which is horrible).
My story is full of drama. I got a free iPhone with them by signing in a 18 months contract. This phone got stolen and insurance refunded the money but my mistake was that instead of cancel the contract I bought a Nexus One.
It's not really a mistake because I love it but... check out that.
Movistar detects if i'm connecting from other phone different than iPhone somehow and apply a different data plan.
Do you guys know how the hell they do that? Can I fake it so it charge me inside the iPhone data plan?
I cannot change the contract!!
Cheers,
D.
Unfortunately you are stuck. Unless you change the IMEI #, which I don't know how to do and I bet would be pretty difficult, your provider will be able to tell what phone you are using.
Thanks for your reply.
It has to be the IMEI... anyway I called them and told them I'm using an iPhone
They told me to switch on and off the phone so maybe they link the IMEI to my contract. Anyway it looks more complicated than that because I was using my old iPhone with the same SIM card and all the traffic was inside my data plan.
So still I don't know how the hell they know. Maybe the root of the IMEI is the same for all iPhone mobiles?

Thank you.
So looks like I was right. The root of the IMEI shows the manufacturer... ****..

Pasate a Vodafone que no te pondran pegas y es mas barato. Todos son unos cabrones pero es que Movistar es Telefónica, creo que con eso esta todo dicho.
Un saludo!
For the rest I basically told him to switch to Vodafone cause it's cheaper.
Lo se.... Jimmy.
Odio telefonica, yo trate siempre con Orange por que he tenido pesimas experiencias con el resto y la he cagado pasandome a Movistar...
Pero tengo aun el contrato de permanencia y no se que hacer...
What they are doing to you is nonsense, you are paying for the contract and the data plan you should be able to use with whatever phone you want. I'd tell them that you want to use a different phone because your iphone got stolen, tell them that otherwise you'll go to customer's office and in last stance, you'll stop paying the contract as you cannot use it with your current phone.
It's ridiculous they are forcing you to use your contract with an specific phone...
And, as Jimmy said, just stay far far away from Movistar!
---
I know you both are right! I thought the same but I want to get with the key.
By "key" i meant. How the hell they know i'm not using an iphone?
I used a iphone edge with the same sim card and they didn't charge apart ...
Movistar won't fix the problem i'm sure. Only they could do it's change my "iPhone Data plan" into a "normal data plan" but... they cannot do it as it's an iphone contract!
i'm ****ed up
Pfff... I'm afraid you're screwed. How much more does the normal data plan cost vs iPhone data plan?
hehehehe the thing is... i have to pay IPHONE PLAN plus another data plan if i want to save money up!
because the wont cancel it.... psss... seriously...
anyway ill inform you here of the process cos they will return me all the money out of the data plan. but i cant be claiming all months!

In the UK it's illegal to change the IMEI of a phone, perhaps it's illegal throughout Europe?
mmmm i dont know... maybe
Not just Europe, it's illegal worldwide.
Can't be done on (most?) modern phones anyway.
So nobody can help me out with that?
Call consumer protection, or at least tell your telco that you will.
I think i'll do that.
If customer protection cannot do anything I will just pay penalty to sign off that **** contract because I seriously hate movistar.
Never again!
i think they also can track what you do
for example an iphone won't connect to the android market by an android phone will
if they track what you've done then they can see that you've maybe accessed the android market because you contact the android market server through the "cloud" of your provider
i am not sure if it's legal in europe to do that but i don't think so
and maybe they do it in an other way but its technically very easy to filter your traffic and see if you are using android or windows mobile instead of iphone OS
I don't think they analyse the traffic.
I'm 70% sure that the first digits of the IMEI number are similar for all iphone devices...

It's unlocked to any cell phone provider, you'll just need a basic data plan.

I bought one Atrix at&t and it came locked. I bought the unlock code with a seller on ebay, bearcodes, and did not work. I tried the site FastGsm and got the same codes and did not work. I've heard and the IMEI is correct. Always the same message is displayed: "Network unlock request unsuccessfull"
Can anyone help me?
The Codes:
Submitted IMEI 3536************ has unlock code 06555628 13077919 4002829336
Thanks
PS - Sorry for my english
Can't you just tell AT&T that you're going abroad and that you need it unlocked?

Cool, I'm just going to block your IMEI or steal it and clone your phone..
I believe it was said that AT&T isn't unlocking the Atrix until August/Sept timeframe
Guys,
Please have a little patience.
the friend is from Brazil and bought the phone from a person here who said it was easy to unlock and it is with this problem on their hands. This person bought the phone from AT & T.
Can we help you?
Why would you ever want to broadcast your IMEI to the world?
Guys,
he probably did not know the danger of spreading IMEI
bless him. anyway, bought my unlock code from ebay for £10. it was locked to AT&T. the ebay username is freedomobile-com. you have to be patient though. it took him 2 days to get me mine. best of luck
Get ready for an insane phone bill this month my friend.
I think it'll be over 10k. Pay per use data... Download 5 gb files..

Valeu cara. Realmente não dei muita importância uma vez que o aparelho está no Brasil e não vou cliente ativo da at&t. De qualquer forma valeu pela força. Já editei o post.

I think that was in reference to Motorola unlocking the bootloader. This thread is about unlocking the AT&T network restriction (which prevents you from using a non-AT&T SIM card when traveling overseas). Thirds parties, such as the one used by the OP of this thread, already offer codes to do that.
Cellunlock.net worked for me....only 20 bones.

no, he is talking about network unlocking. AT&T's policy is 6 months after release, which is august.

dLo is correct 100%
In fact, to go a step further, some phones are under contract to never unlock like some blackberry devices.

Criteria for Unlocking with AT&T
http://www.informationweek.com/blog/229202590
1) Customers with postpaid accounts who have completed a minimum of 90 days of active service and are in good standing and current in their payments.
(2) Customers with prepaid accounts who have provided a detailed receipt or other proof of purchase of the handset.
(3) Customers who own handsets for which AT&T has an exclusive sales arrangement with a manufacturer of less than 10 months will have to wait until the 10-month period expires before they can receive an unlocking code.
I think you're also only allowed 5 unlock codes per month.
The alternative is the overseas excuse, but I don't know the success rate of that excuse.
Generally the phone has to be 10 months old since release date and you need good standings.
The only exception is the iPhone.
Hope this helps =]

The 930U firmware is on a quarterly update schedule so we'll probably get one by the end of the month or halfway through March.

I had read that before about the unlocked phones being on a quarterly update schedule. That's pretty ridiculous if you ask me. It SHOULD be drastically more simple to get the updates out for unlocked devices, if for no other reason than they don't have to go through the carriers. No testing/integrating carrier crapware, etc. And in principle, it's ridiculous to screw people who paid full price for their unlocked phones in hopes of getting updates faster because of my last statement. Now us here who have just flashed this firmware on our sprint phones maybe don't have as much of a leg to stand on as people who did pay full price for an unlocked phone, but it still defies logic that Samsung wouldn't update a more expensive, unlocked phone more frequently than quarterly. Heck, I've still got 2 S5s, one my wife is using, and one spare for me, and they are still getting monthly security updates! Just got another one yesterday. So how does samsung reconcile the fact that they religiously update a 3 year old phone monthly, but can't update an unlocked current flagship phone more often than quarterly??? I've tried to play devil's advocate and defend Samsung on this, but I can't come up with much justification. The only remote reason I can find is that the user base for the unlocked phones is no doubt small compared to the user base of carrier phones. And I guess since the unlocked phones have to work on all US carriers, there's probably some more work involved in making sure updates work properly on all carriers, instead of just one. But still, people paid a premium for an unlocked phone. They should get premium support.

That's good ole Samsung for you. Lockin bootloaders and ignoring the customer. They keep on this path and they'll be apple in a year or two.
I have a feeling that the U will get nougat until all major carriers in the US release nougat for their devices becauses maybe US carriers have some kind of exclusivity? Its a hunch only, so don't take my word for it.

All major U.S carriers have got it, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint, AT&T. They have no excuse, they're just lazy. Honestly going to switch to an LG or Google phone next time I upgrade, Samsung has lost my money. Absolutely ridiculous that those who paid even more than I did on sprint get the update after us.

Is cloning a sim card reliable. Simply i have 2 phones. One wich a love better for school use and the other wich i hate but is more robust for work. Im growing tired of switching sim cards. Would buying thos cheap sim card cloner on ebay work well with a blank sim card? Anyone have experience with those.
My phone is linked to telus in canada.
I know i wont be able to used both devices at the same time and thats not my point. They will never be on at the same time. Id like it to be as simple as turning one off and the other on.
Thanks in advance guys and gals

Just go to your carrier and request a new sim, most of the times they just dont disable the last one.
You can check on ebay or amazon for any sim clone hardware
Thanks for the info. Went and they said cant be done. ill look for cloning hardware and give that a try

Don't ever tell them you want to use the two sim cards =)))
Go and tell them you were playing with your phone and broke the SIM card that you need a new one.
They will tell you that they will lock the old one (but they really almost never but EVER do it)
Just try it, at worst you will have the new sim and the old one locked
I repeat, dont tell them you want to use both SIM cards.
BTW let us know when you have the hardware and how it works, and let us know how it goes (with purchase link )
If cloning doesn't work, you can use call forwarding. There is a setting only for "When unreachable", meaning when phone is off. So all calls will be forwarded to your other (work) phone when the other one is off. One con is the you need two sim cards.
You can't get a second SIM from the carrier for the same number. They associate the IMSI to your account and you'd have to have a second line for a second SIM.
Cloning will work as long as you can get good software out of China that will clone a SIM properly. A lot of the cloning software from Amazon or Ali or wherever is old junk that worked on old SIM's and through Windows XP or earlier. A lot of them won't properly clone a modern Canadian SIM.
