So yeah, I bought my hero yesterday and the guys at the sprint store spent around 30mins with it(I guess they were giving it the update, but they never asked me if I wanted it)
so the question is, how do I go about rooting it now? all the tuts I've seen are for 1.5

meh I feel like fighting sprint over it since they didn't even tell me what they did, but asking for a phone swap over an update sounds like a douche costumer
I've seen people asking for an exchange over less than that. Here is a good one, a customer who just upgraded his phone came back and demanded an exchange because the box had a weird mark on the button of it that was smaller than a grain of rice and it did not affect his phone or the functions of the phone at all.
I miss the days when all we had was basic calling phones
But yeah I'm new to the hero (coming from the t-mo G1) 2.1 is much more smooth along with the sense UI. and here I am wondering when(if) we are getting 2.2 or root access on 2.1 in order to get a 2.2 rom.
waiting on the devs , root access would be great(wifi tether!)
I finally got my droid x about 2 weeks ago after waiting almost a month on backorder.. Since i ordered it ive gotten an pneumonia lung infection as of saturday tonsilitis and fevers.. Plus two weeks in i got laid off so this hasent been the greateast of time. Ive been pretty out of it and yea.. anywho. I got this and first thing i did was Root via the "DroidX Root" with the Root Me and UnRoot Me " buttons. Ive owned a G1 and a Droid Eris prior to all this and loved em both. Rooted them gotten the recovery image's custom roms ect. With this im getting confused. I think its partially because ive been so ill and disoriented half the time. Also because of this efuse crap and what not. Yes ive googled and searched but again ive been fairly out of it so im still not certian what i should do here. I downloaded some apk file Recovery Bootstrap v1.0.0.3 that i was told i needed to get but again...
I want or at least i think i want to get to 2.2 im currently still on the 2.1 build it shiped with. i have *228'd it or changed the firmware in any way all ive done is rooted it.
Im having issued with the data connection. My browser seems to hang a good 50-60% of the time wether im on my wireless g connection at home or on 3g. Ill listen to slacker radio and often it stops for sometime and either wont resume playback until ive closed and re-opend it or just does it on its own.
Ive heard of people getting roms on it but others tell me there not "real".
Also its "fluid'ness speed" seems to be jotty at times. I havent hardly installed much on this and its slows down really bad at times.
Basicly i like modding my phone and really enjoy all the work people put out to fully give us the full capability's of these pieces of hardware we buy. But i dont feel like im getting that.
What other suggestions can you all give me to do to my phone, to speed it up back it up remove this crapware like dlna ect. I have seen some threads about doing this but then people telling me they get stuck at the boot logo cause they messed something up and i dont really wanna do that.
What have you done with your phones? How well do they run?
Thanks for taking the time to read my post and i look forward to everyone's reply

Sorry to hear about your problems. I just went through a week of hell before being diagnosed with pneumonia this June. So I know how it felt.
Basically, even though 2.2 OTA is available, if you mess up your phone while modding, there is no stock image to fall back to, so you'll be stuck with a bricked phone.
The best solution right now is to upgrade to original 2.2 leak. Then you can install leaked 2.3.15 which is the same as OTA (with a difference of being deodexed and rooted). In this case even if you have problems, you can always flash original 2.1 back and start from scratch.
rootzwiki has a good amount of info on how to do all of this. But of course feel free to ask questions.

i'm sure i'm not alone in this, or at least i hope i'm not alone - lol
i seem to be addicted to flashing new roms on my droid x every couple of days.
i rotate thru several if not all of the available roms, only to return to the current favorite rom, but then 2 days later it's back to the flashing - lol
the wife thinks i'm crazy, maybe i am, but maybe i'm not.
anybody else have this problem/addiction/need/etc?
just curious as to what other people's rom habits are...

I am a recovering addict! When I first got into Android I was obsessed with flashing (my Droid that is) a ROM a day was nothing out of the ordinary...
After a 12 step program (and a locked bootloader...) my flashing habits have drastically slowed down.
Now I typically keep a ROM for a couple of weeks on my X before getting the itch.
This is called ORD and has been identified long ago. There's a thread for addicts (recovering and non-recovering) here.
same here....now a days...flashing new roms has become my new hobby.....
its great to be on android....one can do any tweak whatever he likes
CHEERS YO THE ADDICTS
Jeez dis forum is dead.
Even sd_shadow dont post much no moh.
Hey guys theres a thread you may enjoy in ot
Have fun

I just gotta say, I'm spending more time with this phone out of service than I am with it on. my voicemail never got so much use! Coming from blackberry, this is my first android phone and I'm loving it! I spent this kind of time breaking and fixing computers before now and since theres not much left for me to tinker with computers this is really filling the void!
The thing is.... I am totally addicted to flashing and reflashing so what is going to happen when the acclaimed Cynagen Mod 7 comes for Atrix? Is that it? What am I gonna do then?
Since I'm new to android I don't really know what else is out there or what I can do with it.. Hell I hardly know what Cynagen Mod is (besides being a ROM). If I can find the time I guess I'm gonna have to learn how to develop apps or something....
I know rambling... but what is going to happen after or if we get Cynagen Mod?
Um, what does it matter? Did you know about this Magical rom 2 weeks ago? No? then enjoy the ride, many people will make many roms and new **** is going to happen with the phone.. Now you are like a god, you know and see all..
When it comes, it will come. No point in talking about it until it happens...
Hey guys, So I have 2 questions.
1. Ive been on 2.2/2.2.1 roms for 6 or so months. Ive tried most of them. It seems most new roms being released and updated are 2.3 Gingerbread roms. Are any of them working 100%? (GPS and everything)? Is there any real difference you guys can tell between 2.2 and 2.3 roms, regarding speed, and features? If so, do I have to flash Gingerbread boot loaders (is the process different then just putting on internal and flashing like I do with 2.2 roms)?
2. How long do you guys think that tmobile will have replacement Vibrants in stock? When doing warranty replacements, they are still replacing with Vibrants. my guess is since they are making new Vibrants anymore, they will have to start replacing warranty exchanges with other devices; like galaxy S 4g and hopefully Sensations... you guys have any ideas how long they will still have Vibrants before they have to exchange it for something else?

Well...
1. None of the 2.3 ROM's can be said to have 100% working GPS IMHO. When it works it works and when it doesn't it doesn't. I've read a few posts on how to make it work more often but have more or less given up and am sticking with Project-V until we see a 2.3 leak or official ROM.
2. Your phone warranty is a year, right? So, if you break your phone more than a year into the purchase aren't you going to have to replace it with another one on your own dime? the point I'm making is that most all of the warranties will be expired by the time T-Mobile even gets close to running out of refurbished Vibrants to exchange broken ones with... and, as another example on this subject - I can still get hard drives for HP and Dell servers which are 7-10 years old now. They're original equipment, have just been refurbished. T-Mobile will likely always keep a few refurbished Vibrant's around...
I've been running the CyanogenMod 7 nightly since built #30, and all I can say is it's gotten better and better.
There is a GPS fix that is really easy to apply and my GPS now locks within 30 second everytime, all the time. GPS problems are no more, and i've been using it for about a week now without a hitch so it's not just a fluke. Look on the development section you'll see stuff on working GPS fix.
As for changing to the gingerbread loader, when you go into CWM and update to something like CM7, it will automatically update it for you, you would just do a data wipe and install it like any other rom.
As for T-Mobile running out of vibrants. Sure its certainly possible. Will they...? Depends on how many they still have and how many people break theirs..
The replacement more than likely would be the Vibrant 4G... which would be a bummer because nobody wants that thing.
thanks for your response guys. I really appreciate it.
one more question, anyone have any idea which department, at tmobile, has more authority; Customer loyalty or Retentions? or are they the same dept? Tmobile really frustrated me yesterday and I want to call back today, but not sure which dept to talk to....Ive had 2 lines with them for over 5 years, but Im afraid they are already turning into att and it will only get worse with the merger.
---For example, several times in the last couple of years they have changed my rate plan very easily without signing a new contract. they have just changed it without problem. I tried to do it yesterday and they said now they have a policy that they will not change a rate plan without signing a contract (im not under contract). they can add features, but wont actually let me change my number of minutes or anything without signing a new contract......like they have in the past.....It has me really frustrated since i have 2 lines with texts and data with them for over 5 yrs and never a late pmt.
so any idea which dept, Retentions or Loyalty?
Anyone know diff between loyalty and customer retentions? Or are they the.same?
