Opera issue on hd2 - HD2 General

Please help as this is driving me insane!
I have a telstra hd2 with the 3 official patches.
Opera mobile is repeatedly having an issue where trying to access the internet with it results in "Connection closed by remote server" error most times. All addresses except the wap.telstra.com addresses work fine in internet explorer.
Example: www.google.com.au
Opera reports Error! Connection closed by remote server
IE displays the google search page.
Please help to resolve this issue.

which version of opera?
do telstra use a proxy?
does it happen on both data and wifi?

opera 9.7 build 35577
Unsure about proxy server, dont see a proxy setting in the opera settings page.
the hd2 is my only acess point to the internet

I just found out this: launch Opera.
Open the Preferences Editor by typing opera:config in the address bar of Opera (remove any 'http' or 'www' first so that it ONLY reads opera:config) and hit go.
Scroll down to "Proxy" settings. enter your proxy server address. I put it in ftp, http and https. Click the check boxes below that to enable these. Click on "Save". should work then.
That's all I know so far... hope it works for you.

Hotmail on Universal

Browser - Opera 8.5 beta
Device - Qtek 9000
Connection - GPRS T-mobile
Location - USA
For some reason, when using GPRS, going to hotmail, it takes me to msnmobile instead of the regular hotmail webpage despite using Opera.
Not only that, it doesn't take me to the mobile hotmail page, even after I log on.
Anybody knows a solution around it?
Tried searching for hotmail but nothing came up that provided me with the solution.
Actually Opera does not offer a user-configurable User-Agent to enable identification of Opera as IE6 so you are forced to mobile websites.
A work around which I did is as follows:-
1) Open your usual hotmail site on your windows xp computer.
2) When the site has fully opened the address bar on your windows xp web browser will look something like this (http://by20fd.bay20.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/hmhome? *******)
3) Copy and paste this entire address to a word document on your windows xp computer and save the word document.
4) Using active sync transfer this word document from your windows xp computer to your pocket pc and open with Word Mobile
5) Run Opera on your PPC and copy and paste the address from your word mobile document to the address bar in the opera window.
6) Press the go button and the website will display.
7 Now you can save the open website as one of your Favourites and this way you will not have to follow the entire procedure each time you want to go to the hotmail site.
It works for me and hope it does for you sas well.
Kind Regards
nope, still automatically redirects to mobile.msn.com
Really frustrating!
Okay go to the mobile MSN account as opera would take you. Then enter your username and password and log in. Also click the radio button for opera to remember both the username and password i.e. the uppermost radio button. Exit opera then retry the procedure in my above post.

try adding a new section to the opera.ini file in \Application Data\Opera :
[User Agent]
Spoof UserAgent ID=1
Full options are:
Opera = 1
Mozilla = 2
Internet Explorer = 3
Mozilla, no Opera mention = 4
Internet Explorer, no Opera mention = 5
Let me know

Thanks for the info
YES! It works. Changing the User Agent file does allow it to go to the regular hotmail webpage. Don't forget to soft reset.
FYI, I'm using the Opera 8.5 beta on my Qtek 9000.
Google.com still doesn't work on GPRS though. Works great when connected to PC via Activesync....just not through GPRS.
One other thing I need to mention also, after adding the User Agent to the ini file, the top bar where the address and all the icons are, have a background issue. The icons and the address bar all show up fine, but just the background is a little messed up. Nothing you can't live with.
Thanks again Aefelix.

Thx, will try that now...
I noticed something though, i normally use WAP over GPRS to browse, i tried it and it didn't work (copy hotmail link and paste it).
But then when i was hooked up via WIFI, it worked on PIE without changing any setting!
How could that be? :?
Jamps...
I've also noticed that when I use Wi-Fi, hotmail works just fine.
But please do try AeFelix's fix and see if it works for you too.
Hi Aefelix,
Tried modifying the Opera.ini by adding the User Agent section as advised.
Now it takes me to the regular hotmail login page and allows log in as well. But after log in none of the links such as Mail, Calendar, etc appear to work. So I cannot actually go beyond the page which appears after the log in is through.
Anybody else experienced this and any suggestions??
Kind Regards

Browsing with PIE

I'm very confused as to why I can't browse with PIE, Opera works fine, but if I try to browse in PIE (I want to use logmein ) It connects, then says locating for ~30 seconds or so, then gives me the following error : "The page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost. Check the connection and try again later"
I can browse perfectly well with opera, but can't resolve any page with PIE.
I'm on t-mobile in the UK and AFAIK all my settings are right, so why can't I use IE??

Is there any proxy setting in your PDA? As has been pointed out in many of my Pocket PC & Web browsing-related articles, Opera doesn't use the system-level proxy, while PIE / IEM does. This is why IEM doesn't work.
I have got the t-mobile proxy in my settings, but if I delete it I can't connect at all.
WHat settings should I have ??
bump.
Can anyone help?

Email web log in problem

CAn anyone please help with the following problem?
When I log onto my email provider's web access page using a WiFi connection from my Hermes everything goes OK until the point when I have to enter my username and password. At this point all keyboard input into the relevent boxes appears to be disabled, but I can still control the browser OK. Any ideas ??
chances are the site is encrypted or uses SSL and the version of pocket IE on your device does not support logging into that site. you can set the account up in messaging or you can try a different browser such as opera mobile.
http://www.opera.com/download/mobil... Pocket PC phones running Windows Mobile 5.0
Im not sure if this file works on WM6 but I had no problems when i used it on WM5.
Thanks Cliff I will try Opera - never did like IE anyway

WM 6.5.3 and Native VPN......

Hi I recently signed up for a StrongVPN 3 Country deal to give me a stable VPN connection in China. I have set up all ok om my home PC and it works fine allowing access to sites otherwise blocked here.
Then i set up a VPN connection on my HTC Touch Diamond2 I can get the VPN to connect using either IPSec/L2TP or PPTP methods, however neither Tunnel seems to allow Internet access to either MS Explorer or Opera Mobile 10 or any other internet program.
In fact when i have established the VPN connection and then start my internet explorer or any other program which needs to access the internet then the VPN connection is dropped.
If I connect the VPN tunnel on the TD2 i can site there watching it for ages so it does not seem to be dropped after any specific time frame, only when I start an internet access program. for instance if i open my Hotmail account then the VPN connection stays until the point when i tap send and receive then it drops immediately and the hotmail account then synchronise mail via the standard wifi connection.
I also set-up my home PC to allow incoming connection and then set up another VPN connection on my TD2 to allow it to connect to my home PC. but whilst i can connect to my home PC i can not surf the internet using the VPN tunnel......I had thought that i might be able to start the StrongVPN connection on my homePC and then access it via the VPN connection from my TD2 to my HomePC but it does not seem to work that way.
My objective is to use my mobile phone to be able to surf social networking sites that are otherwise blocked by censorship.
Sorry for the long post but please could anyone with advise or experience at setting these two functions up on WM 6.5.3 please advise.
Well I think I may have found out the reason for the VPN connection to drop out....I needed to change my setting in CONNECTIONS and where before i selected my GPRS or EDGE service provider i now need to change that to "My Work Network" as this is where i set up the StrongVPN connection. now i have done this change to the settings the VPN connection does not drop out when any Internet program is started.
But I still can not access the blocked websites using StrongVPN on my WM device so I do not really know if it is using the VPN connection or not.....
im also in china and got one vpn for the same reasons as u and having exactly the same problem as u..
plz tell me if u found any solution...

StrongVPN Help desk advised me to input their DNS server settings in to the VPN account settings. I will try this when i get back to China in September. the DNS settings are found by edit the VPN account then next, next and select "Advanced" then scroll to "Servers" there you can select manaual server address and use the one that you VPN service provider recommend.
Let me know how you get on.
I have a similar problem here. I have setup the VPN in network connections but am still unable to surf blocked sites. The VPN worked fine on my PC. I have also changed the DNS setting for the VPN but no luck. But since there was no popup windows telling me whether it is connected or disconnected, how do I know the status of the VPN connection? Thanks!
to see if you are connected just tap on the top info bar then u should see your wifi connect and also your VPN connection. if you enable sound notification for connections in sounds then you will also get an audible connect and dissconnect to let u know. remember to set all your connection settings to "work connections" as i fount if not then when u open opera or other program that needs internet connection it will disconnect the VPN connection.
Thanks. I have tried that and the VPN was online. But opera was just couldn't open any page. Eighter the factbook tab in TouchFlo3D couldn't login. Any idea?
Have the same problem connecting to my home network - Remote Desktop works fine, until I open a browser on my HD2 - changing settings mentioned above didn't help...
Ok - it seems like I've managed to discontinue the connection drops to VPN.
Added wildcards to exceptions http://*.* and https://*.*
This way everything that tries to connect to internet connects via VPN. To stop that - in Work network setting select the same connection you use to connect to internet (Connections > Advanced > Select network)

I'm not sure what you mean by "added wild cards to exceptions"....what exceptions and where on your PDA did you add them?
As far as I was aware you are only able to set up a VPN connection in the "My Work Network" connections area. then to stop your VPN connection from being dropped by any application that access the Internet, you simply change your options to BOTH use "My Work Network" then the VPN connection is used for all applications.
However that said, I still cant access blocked sites using my VPN connection with StrongVPN in China. even after setting my Server DNS to that of StrongVPN it still does not work.
Anyone got any ideas why or how to access blocked content in China on their PDA??????

Nexus 7's Chrome will not redirect for Wifi Authentication

The wifi at my university either prompts devices for a log in or redirects the browser to a log in page to fully access the wifi. I cannot for the life of me, get my nexus 7 to fully connect. No prompts and chrome will not redirect. Any help would be appreciated!!
Typically on my laptop or other tablets in my University, whenever I connect to the Wi-Fi either a pop-up prompt appears where I can enter my log in info or I go on to my browser (also chrome) and enter a website liek facebook or yahoo and it will redirect to the University's Wifi page and I can log in from there.
My Nexus 7 doesn't have a pop-up prompt when I connect to the wifi nor does the Chrome redirect. Any tips?
That's weird. I connected to the harvard medical school network at where I work and when I tried going to a web page (espn), the redirect occurred and I could sign in. Don't know why it isn't working for you

I have no idea why, I'm connected to Cornell Medical School wifi as well, and typically i'd have to type in my log in and my password when Chrome redirects me but it's not redirecting. It keeps saying This Webpage is Not Available because the DNS Look up failed."
I get an error on the bottom of Chrome stating: "Error 105 (net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED): Unable to resole the server's DNS address."
Trying using Firefox to authenticate instead. Once you do Chrome will work fine (just not for the authentication part).
Quick idea:
At Eastern Washington University there's an open access AP and a secure AP. When you use open, you are redirected to a student sign on page.
When you use secure, there is no page redirect, as you login using some fancy WiFi security protocol with the same user/pass combo from open. (Tablet remembers network auth and auto-reconnects when in range with no redirects) Maybe just check to see if you have that available?
Also, try forgetting/disconnecting from your network so it doesn't reconnect; then manually reconnect to it. This would hopefully flush any DNS configuration your tablet may have erroneously stored.

Thanks everyone, for suggesting the use of other browsers such as Opera to help me redirect. However, I downloaded Opera and Dolphin browser (couldn't find Firefox for some reason) and both of them will not redirect me to the log in page. But my iPhone is able to connect. Any tips? Any help would be appreciated!! (Sorry this is my first Android device)
Can someone please solve this issue? Or at least give an explanation why the nexus 7 has issues with certain open networks?
If you're going to an encrypted (https) page, you won't redirect. Try going to www.google.com instead of your homepage (gmail can be set to https).
Its not encrypted. Just a standard login. I really have no clue what is going on. I tried setting a static IP and using google's DNS as well as open DNS which helped a bit (I occasionally get th elogin screen now, but it doesn't do anything for me).
Has anyone ever solved this issue?
Mine redirects just fine. I have to select the network in the WiFi settings, and then open the browser, though.

Not sure from your answer if you understood me. If the page you're trying to get redirected FROM is HTTPS, it won't redirect. Navigate to google.com and see if you redirect (since that's never https).
That page is not https. It is standard HTTP.
Before I wouldn't even get that page. Now I reliably get that page (the authentication/acceptance of policy page) since I changed the DNS settings for open DNS (another site recommended using google's DNS or using open DNS). However after I hit accept, it doesn't do anything and just times out after 5 mins or so.
This should work
idk if I'm late in answering this but next time you log in from any device look for the router number and type that in the web browser on the device it isn't connecting on and that should redirect you
Is there any hope? Android is just impossible when it comes to wifi. Sometimes it brings up the login page. But if it doesn't bring up the login page, you will never get connected.
Here's a sample experience.
I'm at a coffee shop trying to connect my oneplus one, which has cyanogen12.0-yng1tas17l
Some things I tried: I opened wpa_supplicant.conf with a text editor and deleted this coffee shop's network. I tried to connect using the app "wifi browser login." I went to settings--modify network--advanced options--ip settings to find the gateway, ip address and dns of the coffee shop, and tried typing them into the browser. Nothing works.
This failure to load the login page is a problem that affects android in general, not just the oneplus one or cyanogen. I have problems with the nexus 7 sometimes too. I've been searching for a solution for years. The silence is deafening.
