Anyone here use Edge only? - HD2 General

If so whats the speed for Web Browsing and Youtube?
Im getting an HD2 and am going to be using ATT, obviously no 3G, so just wondering.

I do, in Czech Republic, T-Mobile. Web is fine. Youtube with low-resolution is fine, but the quality sucks. Google maps are usable, but streetview is very slow.

Thanks! You say Youtube on low, will it even play on Hi-res? Or just take a while to load?

EDGE = about 25kB/s max. Do the calculations yourself
It's fine for light pages and such, but a heavy webpage (1MB) takes easily 40sec to load, a youtube video in HQ several minutes. Consider Opera Mini for brosing, their compression is very efficient and speeds up things a lot.

Compression can be turned on in both opera 10 and opera 9.7. In opera 10 it's in the settings menu, in 9.7 you have to go to about:config and search for 'turbo'.

Just for comparison, you said edge= 25 k/b max.
what would 3G be??

I am on T-Mobile's Edge and it is almost impossible to watch streaming video on Edge. I will be upgrading to T-Mobile US HD2 once HSPL will work on it so I can use 3G.

Edge
Hi kevin, I think we talked before? I love hd2, & I only get edge. I had hd before, it was nice, but this hd2 is great, even on edge. I watch youtube on skyfire, not bad at all. I use google, accuweather, Igo8, Google maps, all work great. I had no choice, no 3g here. Tmobile is almost no signal at all here! Quig,, From Htchd2 forum

I only use EDGE on the ATT network. I have no problem browsing the web, and Youtube seem to log quickly. It's definitely not 3G, but it's good enough for me .

About 200kB/s here. Results in same experience than when you're on wifi.
EDGE is still very useable though especially if you have opera Mini / turbo mode. I sometimes switch to EDGE only when moving as I'll go in/out of 3G coverage repeatedly with many switches/dropouts, and it's fine. The biggest annoyance here before we had 3G is that the edge network would often clog, and as calls have priority sometimes you simply couldn't do anything for 5 mins, had to wait for the load to lighten.

I am considering buying this device in USA and go with the 3G network offered by Cingular. Anyone her ein the US thta has experimented this phone already and verified that the 3G is working and that the video calls are working too? Please let me know... Thank you, Paul.
Hi. You really should search before asking questions (this one has been answered many times)...
Yes, there's 3G available in many metropolitan areas with Cingular, and it works great (depends where you live though).
No, you can't use VideoCalling (Cingular doesn't support it).
G3 and video calls...
Sorry! However I researched using "3G and video calls usa" in several combinations but did not get any info. HOwever, I just got the Loox t830 and I am sending it back because the UMST doesnt work here in usa. but at this point I understand that any phone would not work. And anyway the customer services of Cingular told me that it would, but of course I don't believe them.... Thank you for your answer!!
830 is UMTS 2100 only .. so it's 3G wont work in the US .. Same prob with SE P990i ..
For the US, you need UMTS 850/1900 atleast ..
3G works fine on it, but you'll run into the problem that the connection speed is almost TOO fast for the browser. The high speed is really only good for stuff like Skype or other VOIP app's. Downloads are of course fast, but your day to day browsing doesn't speed up much, no matter which browser you try.

This is very interesting. I have a question for you and all the other friends: did you try to check the speed of the connection via a computer? I mean, you can go in internet via the phone, from a laptop via the phone, or you can stick the sim card in a PC Card (I have a Sony Ericsson GC83) and go in internet. If you did so, what speed did you have, or could you get? Thank you, Paul.

ROGERS wireless users: please share experience

I've been surfing XDA for a while now on the hermes boards.
I'm a Rogers wireless user for Tytn (got it about 2 months ago with the $30/6gb option) and I just wanted to see how other rogers users are using their phones. I notice most people on the threads here are not rogers users. so if there's any of you out there, please reply.
I'm running TNT 2.0 rom by it's right at the moment. the newest one with wm6. I've used his old beta previously.
and I'm currently using Radio 1.51.00.10
I got this phone recently and after using it for quite some time. I've come to think it may have been better if I got an iPhone 3G instead due to the tytn's slow speed (multitasking+internet). the TNT 2.0 rom is quite fast though in terms of responsiveness. my main issue is internet speed.
I'm a graphic artist and my main reason for getting the phone was so i could sketch on it away from home with vspainter (virtual spaghetti) since iphone had no drawing program. plus the ability to have office on the phone is nice for work. only issue here is taht I have to be using the drawing program alone. if I have mp3s running on it, the drawing slows down to a unusable point.
I have a good friend that works at a fido store (i know I'm on rogers though), so I play around with the stuff there frequently. the iphone speedtests on 3G are blazing fast. and the samsung jack's speed on PIE are 1.5mbs, like telus desktop speed (http://www.mobilespeedtest.com/) which is astounding. my tytn on ROGERS 3G in the same area, can't even finish the test. anyone on rogers there know how to make it go faster? I've used settings I've read other people use, and even called rogers to get the settngs from customer service. it still won't pull faster than 400kbit/sec (www.dslreports.com). the samsung jack on fido was ripping 1000kbit/sec in the same place.
the jack can also play youtube on 3G PIE. I once got youtube to play on my phone when I was on wifi. but once Im on 3G I never got it to work. I was running TMPCE and coreplayer.
another issue is multitasking. I've found listening to music A2DP. playing on msn live. and surfing PIE would reduce my phone's battery life to about 6 hours. using Opera would stop my mp3 player. so far I found that opera mini is the best browser to use on the phone to surf sites and read things. anyone have some opinions to share with me? any msn client I can run on the phone all day long with no issues for battery or multitasking??
a good thing I've tried was using the phone with just 2G settings. so I turn off the HSDPA and 3G network and just use GSM gprs. the phone lasted over 19 hours in a day. that was great.
Im about to try out the spb mobile (www.spbsoftwarehouse.com) programs on a plain flash to if they can increase the usability and multitasking of the phone.
if any rogers users out there want to talk about their tytn experience on the phone is, please share!

why is youtube so slow on 3g it always buffering please help

hi guys sorry if im being a bit dumb but why is it slower than any other phone like my mate e71 which steams youtube clips from 3g without buffering, but my xperia is buffering about ervery 5 secs so you cant watch your cilps.it works fine in wifi could anyone help me thanks
Are you sure u're connected to your 3G network?
why is youtube so slow on 3g???
yep browsing seems to quick its just too slow steaming video any thoughts is there a fix iv tryed the cabs that are posted this forum plese help
what youtube program ?
I have 3 apart from playing them directly in opera
iv tryed a few different ones
iv tryed all from X1 programs, panels, tweaks, fixes [COLLECTION]
Tweaks which are posted on the fourum, they all work gr8 on wifi but all too slow on 3g.
I think you are jusing the htc youtube app.. try to change the quality from high to low this should work..
tryed it mate still really slow what have you installed on yours and does it buffer or play smooth?
I've been meaning to address this as well. Whne i connect using 3g, for any form of a connection(youtube or interent in general) I have a slower connection than i do when on hspda. Any ideas why this may be?
well probably cause the 3g icon is plain umts, and hspda is way faster than regular umts, more than double the speed sometimes, its more like 3.5g so when theres an H instead of an 3G you should get blazing speeds.
on H or 3g its never been at blazing speeds its good enough to brows on the net for but not for youtube its way too slow

how streaming on the edge?

can anyone tell me how they the streaming is on the N1 when using edge network. I like pandora, and it seems to work ok on my touch pro when in edge land, but am just wondering in general how the streaming is on the N1. IE internet radio, youtube, pandora...
On edge, youtube buffers for a while before playing, and it's certainly not high-def, but it usually plays all videos without pausing once it finishes the initial buffer. I've used Pandora, Last.fm, imeem, and others I can't remember, and streaming on them is flawless on edge. All this was on a G1, but I imagine the Nexus has to perform at least as well.
Pandora does great on edge. Frankly I'm not too disappointed about the lack of AT&T 3g. Even net surfing hasn't been bad. With WIFI at the house and such I'm not really worried.

HD2 HSDPA/WiFi speedtest slow

My ADSL connection can do 13Mb download & 1Mb upload, all computers achieve (also on wireless) this using either speedtest.bbmax.co.uk or speedtest.net. However my HD2 can only achieve 3.5-4Mb max using the same sites, upload is represented correctly. It seems to fly up very quickly then back down, for upload it takes a few seconds to check the speed for both sites. I used Opera 10 (Flash Lite 3).
Also on HSDPA it can only do ~0.5Mb but when tested in dongle it achieves ~2.5Mb, upload is represented correctly (1Mb) for both Vodafone and O2.
I've also tried the wireless N hack but this hasn't improved things.

There is no solution. HD2 performance on WI-FI are just bad. People don't care. The only justification they can give to this is "it's just a phone". Amen.

That sucks, my mates Omnia is also pretty bad on WiFi so I assume this is a WinMo problem?
Also I meant just O2 for 0.5/2.5 HSDPA thing, just checked Vodafone and got 3.5Mb / 1Mb.
Also doesn't the "it's just a phone" thing kinda wear off when you cross the £500 mark?

I don't know. Maybe it's WinMo but I don't have other Windows Phones to make comparisons.

I agree but these are the people that appear here when you criticize their toy.
Maybe enabling wifi-n will speed it up. I'd at least give that a try.
Also, I did a test, and I get exactly what I get on my laptop which is 5644kbps
I have been having issues with HSDPA on my HD2 for some time. I am with T-mobile UK... what I have found is that when I hard boot/reflash a new rom... HSDPA is full speed. However something triggers what I can only think is a GPRS only mode, at first I thought I had installed apps that affected networking but I don't believe that is the case now.
Yesterday for example I was in a shielded building and had no reception whatsoever... when I came out I could not connect to T-Mobile data so restarted my HD2 a few times then setup data again.... I am connected now but internet connectivity is really slow, I generally stream music but I can't do this and I may as well forget about YouTube.
I have spoken to T-Mobile about this in the past and they said there are no restrictions on my account. I also know (havng proved it before) that by going through the hassle of a hard reset/new rom flash HSDPA with work again.
I wonder if this is IP related but I am not sure how to check the configuration on Winmo. I also am unsure how/where to do a speedtest (Speedtest.net needs an updated version of flash).
Managed to get it sorted out.... sent the Tmobile settings from the Tmobile website to my phone. Then in my ROM (OMEGA) there is a enable 3G mode.... This seems a bit flaky to be honest... Anyway I selected the new Tmobile internet settings option in Connections, then flicked the 3G setting in connection manager on and off a few times...
In the status bar, rather than "G" and a small "G" with reception meter both show as "H" (this will differ to the rom you have probably).... main thing is streaming is back again

I've generally found 3G to be faster than WiFi and even the ping in some situations on WM phones.
my phone also gets around 2 to 3Mbps on the speed test with the wifi.. 700 or so with hspda and 500 or so with 3g.
isnt this the max rate of the memory card? perhaps the phone itself is slowing down the results?

3G speed depends heavily on the mast tech level and how many people are using it.
