Event Invitations to a BlackBerry - HD2 General

This is a strnage one, hopefully someone can help me out here.
My misses has a 8520 blackberry. We were trying out inviting attendees to events.
I sent an invitation from my device, first off its annoying how it defaults to send via outlook email and i have to sync with outlook to send that invitation.
She received it on her BB but it said its an invalid format and cannot be opened.
However, she sent me an invitation to my device from the BB and it worked fine, was able to accept and everything...
Confused...
I tried looking at the BB forums, but all I coudl find was stuff about the BES and enterprise servers...not helpful.

My wife and my brother both had blackberrys until they got their HD2s recently. We had the same problems but worse. the only way we got it to work wad when my HD2 was syncing to a proper exchange or enterprise server, didn't work through google. Also when people with berries email me items my HD2 can't open them unless you save them to the memory with the correct file extension. Now we all have HD2s all is good.
Solution: get her to bin the RiM and buy a HD2.

4smartphone.net Exchange Server Service

Greetings all,
I upgraded my 8125 to the Qtek ROM via summiter's ROM upgrade tool, (worked perfectly, thanks summiter!) and I enabled push email.
Since I didnt have and Exchange server, I signed up for one with 4smartphone.net after reading about them in PocketPC Mag. Anyone use them? there's a 15 day trial, but they couldnt get my account setup right after calling them 3 times and about 4 hours wait, then it seemed to work, push email worked great..
Now this morning, they're server is unresponsive again.. jsut wondering if anyone uses them and what their experiance with them is.. i'm not to happy with them right now..
I would also be interested in this. I need to find a good shared exchange provider and I am thinking about going with Intermedia.net.
I wasn't happy with the response I got on a pre-sales query. So I used 1and1.co.uk instead.
They provide push mail (but don't list it) and support a multi-domain email. The only down side is that they don't provide spam filtering. But I figured out how to block it (spam) via filtering.

I have been using 4smartphone for about a month w/o difficulty -- I use Outlook rules to send copies of all my office mail to 4smartphone which then pushes them to my k-jam. Only negative in this is that all the msg. come in with my name and address as the sender (no prob changing this if I use reply but it is an extra step). Service is quite fast and so far w/o problems in either direction.
well, just got an email from them about the server outage, with them profusely apologising.. at least they're letting their customers know about it..
another thing i didnt really like is you have to pay for a full year up front.. although right now i'm diggin' the fact that i get push email(tested i get an email within 15 seconds of it being sent), and also that my Outlook on my laptop and my 8125 are fully synced.. if i read it on my 8125, it's listed as read on my laptop and vice versa, so i dont have to re-read anything or whatever.. pretty slick.. they also sync contacts, tasks, calendar, etc too..
they have a 15 day trial, so im gonna give it another week or so and see how it goes..
Just signed up for this at mail2 web. I used to use them ages ago just to check a couple of pop3 accounts at work, but they are doing a beta of a free hosted Exchange service. Even better is that you can get a personal Exchange account for $1.99 a month. You need to create an email address with them, but you can link other pop3 accounts to it as well.
http://services.mail2web.com/FreeServices/m2wLive/
What I like about 4smartphone.net is that when you send mail through them, it will show as your own pre-set email address and not [email protected].
I just finished the trial and signed up for their Express service. I think you can get your money back (pro rata) if you cancel before your subscription expires.
I was considering 1and1.co.uk or 1and1.com too, but couldn't be asked to change all the settings.
I've been using 4smartphone since January and so far I am very happy with them. I have sent about 4 emails to tech support and I received responses within a few hours and they were very helpful. They even verified that my account switched from SMS notification to direct push when I asked (after I upgraded).
I really like using them, so much so that I got the company I work for to sign up with 4smartphone. There are a total of 9 people at my work. Great customer service and a great price.
I just setup a mail2web account and had some problems getting either the txt message based push to work or the direct push to work.
After I contacted them they told me this functionality hasn't been installed and will be done over the next week.
good service
I used 4smartphone when i was working from my office at home and the service was good. I am in a 30+ staff office now and we use Intermedia which is great to. I've got my email set up on my blackberry and you can check your email through outlook on the web which is convenient as well.

Receiving text messages related to ALL of my email accounts

Hello,
My MDA is set up to grab my exchange email, etc over the air through activesync. When I set up the account on the MDA, the setup wizard told me that I could set the account to grab new messages as they arrive. That of course sounds great so I chose that option.
Anyway, occasionally (not always) when I receive a new message on the exchange account, I get a text message silmultaneously with the same from address and subject as the new exchange email that arrived. I assume that "directpush" works by sending out these texts to trigger an activesync. However, as I mentioned, i don't ALWAYS get these texts. Also, it appears that I occasionally get texts a day after the message arrives in my inbox and even after I know I've read and deleted the message from my MDA.
Regardless of the sporadic nature of the texts, shouldn't the MDA keep them hidden from me? It's a little frustrating having to go thru and delete all these erroneous messages.
Any suggestions as to how I can clean this mess up?
First you need to provide more information.
What Rom are you using?
Only AKU 2.x Roms support Direct Push and then you need to have the correct version of Exchange Server (I think 2k5 sp2).
Direct Push does not use SMS but rather a heartbeat via GPRS.
I believe the old version of AS with Exchange Server used SMS (1.x Roms).
Thanks for the response.
I'm using xelencin's rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=53300
I have "direct push" turned on via the comm mgr. My office uses exchange 2k3, not sure what service pack. I don't believe there is such a thing as 2k5.
I might have typed the version number wrong, haven't been an exchange guy for many years. I would suggest talking to the guys responsibly for it and see if they support "MSFP".

The thing is, it works. I get mesages delivered to my phone nearly instantly. However, my SMS box is full of useless crap and this dilutes the usefullness of SMS in general.
That would lead me to believe that the exchange server doesn't support the true Push and since the Rom does it isn't disposing of the SMS as that is the old method.

Ok, that makes sense. I'll get a hold of the exchange admin weds and see if he can do anything for me.
It's Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2...
Are you receiving these texts if you eliminate the exchange server relationship?
(domain can be case-sensitive)
This is most odd. Another strange thing is that you mentioned that you got the option to get new messages as they arrive. That would happen pre AKU2 and SP2. I'd really suspect that your IT guys haven't really gone from SP1 to SP2 as you should not get that option during the AS configuration.
Also, I know that a big concern was that originally MS was thinking of using SMS which was a major pia as we have to purchase that "add-in" from Cingular and get charged for any SMS over our limit. In other words, you might want to see if you're getting charged by T-Mobile....

Interesting. I removed the relationship from activesync (activesync basically now asks me to set up sync with a pc or exchange server), but I'm still getting the texts. Sometimes, I'm getting duplicate texts. They're all coming from "701" if that helps.
HALP!

Is there anyway for me to check the version of exchange as a user?
Ya, the SMS thing is a concern for me. I had to sign up for a text plan on tmobile so that I don't end up oweing a fortune at the end of the month!
That's a good question, determining Exchange SP level remotely. I just tried my OWA but it tells me nothing. I'll keep looking.
Steven
Also, I just re set up my exchange OTA active sync. I get a "pop up" saying that I can synch as items arrive. When I go into "schedule", there's a link there to set that up which then asks for "Text messaging address for this device". Previously, I put in [email protected] which seems to work, but maybe I need to enter it differently some how?

Steven
I have an idea.
It appears that even the new versions of exchange have the feature "AUTD" which does the SMS message triggered update. I set up the exchange account for "auto update" 2 times now, but haven't set it up a 3rd. Is it possible that when the user configures the auto update feature, it triggers the AUTD sms messaging bit on the server? Since I've done it twice, I'm now getting two sms messages per incoming email. However, previously, when i had pocket outlook configured to handle the auto-update bit, it was concealing one of the two identical SMS's, but not the other.
I'm sure I explained this horribly, but it was worth a shot.
Not sure why I didn't notice this earlier...
I'm getting texts related to ALL of my email accounts configured on the device. This includes the exchange account mentioned earlier, but also two GMAIL accounts. For what it's worth, I set these two gmail accounts up through the tmobile set up wizard and later deleted the accounts from the device in an attempt to test things out. When the accounts were setup, they seemed to be grabbing the mail through a tmobile proxy or something instead of directly from the gmail servers.
No idea why I'm getting these messages, but this is getting crazy!
Stranger and stranger! I think that I would contact T-Mobile asap and cancel that SMS. I personally have never had any need for Texting, etc but people have different needs.
What I would start out with is to hard reset the phone after syncing it. Then I'd delete the partnership with AS. I'd setup my Exchange by installing your Exchange server's Security Certificate on your device(which you should keep on your SD card), configuring the AS on the device, never connecting to the PC. Wait a while to setup your GMail accounts, etc. ... one step at a time.
Good luck!

RESOLVED!
Ok, I think I figured it out.
T-mobile apparently uses these text messages to trigger email synchs.
I logged into my tmobile account and decided to pay attention to the "t-zones" section for the first time. "Setup My E-Mail" takes you to a page that allows you to configure email accounts for your device. It also allows you to check your email for those accounts. Anyway, there's an "Alerts" section that you can configure and it appears to relate to these texts that I've been receiving. Even my exchange account was configured here and was setup to send the text messages.
Additionally, it appears that I wasn't being charged for the texts. None of them have shown up in my online bill.
I believe that ALL of this was the result of using the tmobile email setup wizard that's included on the phone xelencin's cooked rom.
Whew, I feel like I've solved a puzzle.
Good for you! Makes sense now...
I've never run that email wizard myself, always manually create the accounts.

Free Exchange Push Mail Server W/ Exch. Over Https And Alias's!

I run an exchange server and I am welcoming pocketpc users that are in need of an exchange account to activesync with. This service also offers Direct Push for those of you that have have this on your PocketPC. As well as the ability to sync all of your contacts, calander events, and task wirelessly onto your Outlook desktop instantly.
NOTICE: Lots of users have been asking if they can have an alias setup so that it looks like they are sending from thier personal email address (ie gmail, hotmail, yahoo ect..) and the answers is YES! With each account you can have an alias setup so that your recipents see your email address as anything you like! In order to keep this service alive, it is asked that you donate $10.00 USD in order to use this Email Alias service. You can use paypal and send the money to [email protected]
Anyone that still needs a Exchange account, I can provide one for them. I will be providing up to 75 or so accounts for free, donations will be and are always appreciated. My constraint right now is how much hard drive space I have. If I can get enough donations for a bigger hard drive I would be able to give out many many more accounts. Also, my service will include Exchange over HTTPS as well if you want to use the server with Outlook on whatever computer you want to. I can provide these settings for people that want the service. Just PM me with the e-mail address you want. Domain is @getztek.com .
So if you like the service and feel that you can contribute, please send paypal payments to [email protected]. If you think you can donate in other ways, please send me an email!
Please submit the information in this format:
First Name:
Last Name or Initial:
E-Mail address requested:
Password:
Also, please give me at least 24 hours to set this up as it is a free service and I do have a job/life. Thanks!
Lastly, I did have this posted in the Wizard forum, but most people don't read both forums and I have more accounts that I can support, hence posting it here as well.
Also, if you want to let me know about something, please repond in the thread, only e-mail / PM your account information.

It is Exchange 2003. Easiest way to install the certificate is put it on your phone, then tap it. It will run and install itself. Once you do that, just enter your info into Active Sync, easy peezie! The outlook access by itself can be tricky which is why I gave you the link to that tutorial showing you how to set it up. Hope this helps.
Sent you a pm . . .

Ok, Im now up and running on both my Tytn and Outlook 2003.
So far everything seems to be working just as it should and my initial impression is that its quicker than mail2web. The original sync of contacts and calendar etc seemed to take aout half the time.
All looking really good, what do I do about the email alias thing? Another pm request to Denial?
I will run for another day or so and update, hopefully will be running a new version of WM6 later today )
Thanks a lot DeniaL, this is a generous contribution to the community and I be making a donation shortly.

Sounds good. Glad to hear that you like it. As far as the e-mail alias thing, when you send your donation just include a note saying what your alias'd e-mail should be and I will set it up and send you an email back letting you know when it's finished. Take care!
Just bumping it so more people can get accounts if they want 'em.

Why would someone host their email with some random individual they've never met, and open themselves up to remote wiping? Seems like a pretty big security breach to me...
I mean, you may be totally trustworthy. But you also may not be.

I sent you an e-mail back. In regard's to your alias, I need to receive the $10 donation through paypal before I set that up. Go ahead and setup your phone, make sure everything is to your liking. As soon as you decide that, let me know and when I receive the $10 I will setup the alias'ing. Take care.
After much hassle, I'm finally up and running, haha. I trust him. I let him remote desktop connect to my computer to setup outlook and he didnt do anything fishy. He's legit and the service seems to work flawlessly once setup. Much recommended to anyone needing good push email/exchange. I will be donating to him once my paypal acct is funded on saturday. cheers on one of the best services yet!

pushing gmail onto my phone.

prewarning: i'm a complete microsoft exchange newbie, although i have experience in win2003 management / active directory etc.
here's what i'm trying to do.
basically, push my gmail email onto my phone (running windows mobile 5). i don't want pop access, i want actual PUSH.
how i figure this would work:
- forward my email from gmail to my local win2003 machine, which has exchange 2003 running
- exchange in turn pushes the email onto my phone immediately
- i can reply on my phone and it looks like it came from my gmail address, not from my local domain (i.e. my exchange server address).
so far i'm ok with 1 and 2, all is working golden. BUT i can't reply on my phone - it sends the message fine but shows the from address as my exchange server address.
any idea how to fix this? basically would want to set up some sort of mail relay...
any help would be appreciated! would be glad to provide a few free accounts to people who can help!
cheers!
If you have Exchange there is a way to setup an alias to accomplish this. PM me if you would like and I can explain in a PM. Basically what it does is it tricks Exchange into thinking it's sending from another e-mail address but basically it just changes the Reply to field so people see it coming from your gmail instead of your exchange account.
Maybe you should try Push Effect ?
took a look at push effect. not quite what i'd like... i odn't want any more running crap on my phone, especially not some alerting service. i want pretty much seamless integration with my outlook on my phone. it can't be hard, i'd rather do it myself for free rather than shell out something or other for licenses or software.
i'm already using emoze (emoze.com) which is good, but adds a silly little signature at the end of emails with some ad. PLUS it has added software running on my pc and phone, which i don't care much for.
try www.port88.org not sure if it's still free. When i signed up it was... amazing services
yep have seen that site. they have a suggested donation of $50, and even then not sure if they let me set my own "from" address...

They require a donation in order to use alias, but then again, most places will. If he is already running his own exchange server, then he can just use that. Check your PMs chamelion I sent you instructions.
got the pm thanks
i did actually did do just that a little while ago and it works great (except for sending myself an email).
i have a whole new issue though, i was tryign to implement certificate authentication and now everythings messed up... it just doesn't synch up any more
i'll figure it out, or just reinstall the whole damn thing!
FINALLY got everything working - the aliases and even the SSL authentication which was a pain in the ass. turns out to have been the smallest stupidest mistake i was making, as it usually is!
if anyone wants free push email like denial is offering, shoot me a PM, i can offer the same
cheers!

ActiveSync issues with sending e-mail

Getting a weird behavior on the EVO with Active Sync.
I remember using it on my Hero with my company's Exchange server a while back, and everything worked.
With the EVO I can get e-mails, push works great, but when sending an e-mail I'm running into a weird issue.
Immediately after hitting send, the phone will complain that the message could not be sent. "Unable to send e-mail" or something like that.
If I go into the Outbox I can see that the e-mail is there. The phone will flash the message every few seconds, meaning it's trying and failing.
The strange part is, the e-mails are actually going through. The first time this happened my e-mail was sent to a work distribution list 15 times before I realized what was going on and deleted the e-mail from the Outbox.
That was with stock ROM and no mods. Today I tried sending an e-mail after rooting the EVO and using Damagecontrol ROM. The issue is still there. I can reproduce the problem just by sending an e-mail, it will be in the Outbox, will go through over and over until I delete it from the Outbox.
It seems like the phone is not getting confirmation from the Exchange server (or ActiveSync rather) that the message is getting sent properly.
I'm not sure exactly how ActiveSync pushes the sent e-mails back to Exchange. It uses the same SSL connection used for push and sync, but does it put it in the Outbox and then try to sync that folder with the server and the server is supposed to delete it from the Outbox once it is sent?
The sent e-mails are showing up in my Sent Items folder, every single one, so if I got 5 copies in my test, I will find 5 sent e-mails in the Sent Items folder.
Weird
I would talk with your IT dept and find out if there are any other smartphone users having the same issue (and if so, which platform), or if yours is an isolated case. I would also try synching your Exchange mailbox with a different android device (and then a different platform) to see if you can replicate the problem; you can also try synching someone else's mailbox on your device.
I don't have a solution for you, as I've never heard of this happening on any smartphone platform.
However, start with basic troubleshooting and you should be able to narrow down the source of the problem.
I am having the same exact issue!!!! Finally someone I can relate with. I have tried everything and no other users on my Exchange server are having this problem.
I have downloaded Moxier Mail from the market and I am using that just for the email and it works fine but I would really love to get this resolved.
Someone help!!!!

Thanks khov07. I have talked to my IT guy. I did try to configure the account on my Hero last night and got the exact same issue. Most of the users here use their iPhone's without a problem.
Now that I have found that the Hero has the same issue, I will go back to my IT guy and we'll try and see if we can find anything useful in our Exchange logs.
Since there are barely any configuration options in the e-mail client, it all probably boils down to a communication issue between the server and the client. Hopefully we'll be able to find the problem and correct it.
Edit: There's another user that has a Moment, I'm not sure if he uses ActiveSync on it, but I'll check with him to see if he has any issues.
Co-worker with the Moment can send e-mails without a problem, but he uses Moxier. So there's something going on between the HTC Mail App and the Exchange server.
OP, I would ask a co-worker if you could borrow their phone (or perhaps your IT dept has a spare for testing) that is non-Android and try synching your mailbox to that device, see if the problem resurfaces.
Finally, take a look at those Exchange logs. You may be limited, however, based on the version of Exchange your enterprise is running, i.e., 2007 vs 2003. Exchange 2007 has significant improvements in mobile device management over 2003.

That's a good idea. Would rule out a problem with my account.
We do use 2007, we could never get this running on 2003.
Thanks
OP: Let us know your progress, as someone has reported the same issue on this thread. I myself am interested in knowing the root cause.
I am still having the issue and would love a resolution.
Thanks in advance,
Well something is definitely f'd up with the ActiveSync client that HTC includes.
I have just put Froyo (EvolutionV8) on my Evo and configured my exchange account on it. I can send e-mail without any problems.
Some Exchange servers have the issue, as most users are not having any problems, but the few of us that are will probably keep having the problem. I haven't had much time to do any troubleshooting on this.
It's good to hear the the issue isn't on Froyo, but I think the HTC Mail client has some extra security features that I would like to take advantage of. I was hoping the recent update would solve the problem, but no such luck. Maybe when the 2.2 official HTC update is released it will fix the problem.
same problem here
I have the same issue on send and rcv, send usually works ok, but checking mail just goes over and over till exch server stops trying. Bugs the hell out of me, im running exch 2007 from 1and1. Would be nice to find a fix to this.
B
same issue here people, on a HTC Wildfire with 2.1 original FW.
sucks...
I have the same issue with exchange and the old touchdown. 6.2 touchdown fixed it for me. must be an exchange update that messed everything up for htc

2.2 includes some additional security features not present in 2.1, such as PIN security enforcement.
I have noticed many ActiveSync issues can be cleared up by wiping out the synch on the device, AND wiping out the local cache on your device. I usually see issues with Droids (all three) synching to Exchange - contacts don't show up, or calendars don't populate, etc.
Also, check to see if your exchange account is synched with any other devices. I have also seen odd issues with synching when your mailbox already has a device partnership with a WinMo device. If it does, delete all of them (server-side), wipe out the account on your phone, wipe out the local cache, reboot, wait 15 minutes, and try again.
Evo's should synch just fine with Exchange.
