Hi all!
I'm desperately looking for a way to kill processes on my HD2 (wm6.5).
Here is what I've already experienced :
1°/ windows task manager : it is possible to switch display between applications and processes, but when I select the process display, the processes can't be killed whereas applications can be... Does someone know if there is a trick (maybe in the registry) to allow process kill in the windows task manager?
2°/ HTC Task manager : Only applications are visible (Not processes).
3°/ Dotfred's Task Manager : it doesn't seem to work under wm6.5.
Thanks for your replies... ;-)

Yes, thanks Kilrah!!!
Schap's Advanced Task Manager is exactly the kind of application I was looking for...
Easy to use, light and working on windows mobile 6.5.
I really don't understand why such a useful application was so hard to find and I why it is not already implemented in windows mobile whereas it is for non mobile versions.
I spent hours looking for this kind of soft on google without any results... A lot of task managers exist without the ability of killing processes. Some are not working (maybe to old or designed for older windows mobile versions). Few people seem to be interested in this kind of soft. Surprising...
Anyway, thanks a lot!

Open an application, for example, Internet Explorer and then close it.
Next, check out the applications running in memory:
Settings-> System-> Memory-> Running Programs
Internet Explorer is apparently still running in memory! Is this a known bug and if so, is there a work around as I would expect this to affect the performance.
Also note this happened before and after the ROM 1.60 Upgrade.
it's been like that from the first version of windows CE
i suppose that because of slow cpu and mem
and such ms believed that keeping the applications running
would inc the response time of the pda so they would not
seem slugish compared to palm and other pda os's
This is a Windows Mobile 2003 'feature'
There are programs available to close the program down completely.
I have my personal favourite, by far, and is completely free. I can't remember the name of it and I'm currently updating my ROM, but as soon as that's done, I'll look in ActiveSync and let you know.

Certainly one of the thing's that I've found since the recent XDAII ROM update is that closing apps down via the Tast Manager has caused the OS to crash out with the message 'A unhandled error has occurred in the shell.' type message (has only happened a couple of times). The only way forward from this is a soft reset.

Hi,
How are you trying to exit the programs that this happens to ? It could be that instead of clicking what you think is the close button, you are actually clicking the Today Screen icon ?
As regards Task Managers, the best I have come across and use all the time is PocketNav. Here is a link for it.
http://www.scottandmichelle.net/scott/cestuff.html
This app allows you to see currently running programs and flip between them with ease. You can also close or close all programs from this menu too.
Hope this helps.
Rgds,
Rob.
WisBar Advance
http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/wisbar
Highly recommended, very small memory footprint, very fast and highly customizable. Oh, and FREE. If you get it, make sure you download an XP skin. Don't use the bundled ones
EDIT: Just so you know, it doesn't officially support Phone Edition. To turn the phone on/off via the taskbar, you have to close WisBar to access the icon.

I'm just using the O2 Active Task Manager (the little arrow on the bottom of the screen) that comes by default with the OS (haven't got round yet to installing a decent Task Manager - will check out the suggestions made here!).

WisBar Advance is one of the better ones that I've used but I will not give PocketNav a go, as there is a HUGE problem with WisBar and the XDAII.
Once you recive a call and access a notification (missed call, SMS things like that). You will not be able to recive any calls after that, if you ring your XDAII from another phone it actualy rings on the other phone but the XDA II does not register the call at all (as though no call is even being placed!!!, no missed call, no error messages NOTHING!!!)
I loved WisBar untill I've narrowed the problem down of not reciving calls to uninstalling or exiting WisBar and doing a softreset and never had the problems again...
Most other task managers I've found seem to have problems with the Phone Edition, cannot hide the Phone ID Program, cant close the Phone after it has been opend, phone keeps ringing over and over a gain even though there is not incomming calls... all are a few problems I have found with other Task managers I've tried... I will give that PocketNav a go and see how it works with phone edition...
I have tested most task managers under Phone Edition and my conclusion is that SBP's Pocket Plus is THEone...
It actually let's you see the notification area just as it's meant to be and it let's you exclude applications so they don't close but minimize (perfect for IA_Caller_Id.exe)
Best regards,
Rayan
Do you know of any freeware ones that are worth while?
Hi, can someone recommend me a suitable task switcher for WM6 builds? All the ones I've tried either killed things they shouldn't have with "kill all" while others looked bad.
Thanks!
Dinarsoft Handy Switcher
Try pBar 14; usefull also as task manager
or spb pocket +, iLauncher
Thanks everyone. I'm giving pBar a shot just now, I used to use an older version on 2003SE. And it's free!
Good evening!
I am currently using a iGO8 navigation system on my HTC Diamond and often get crashes because of the lack of enough memory. So I thought of the following solution:
Wouldn't it be possible to create a multiboot menu which shows up when booting the Diamond, just before the Explorer.exe loads, which lets me choose between booting the normal Windows Mobile GUI or the iGO application (or whatever application I want to)?
I think iGO won't need Windows Mobile to run as it runs on PNA's which are basically just Windows CE systems, and those don't run any Explorer application unless you force them to do so.
I think this can be made possible by changing the INIT entry for Explorer.exe to any other application (the menu) in the registry.
Would that be possible?

the PNA/ gps menu its an application for Windows CE. it loads after windows ce has been loaded. It goes in full screen, without an exit button. so basicaly when the gps menu is loaded all other necesary wince files are loaded (except maybe explorer.exe, witch can load in 1sec with taskman command.). Also wince loading takes about 5 seconds and win6.1 about 1min. As i know win6.1 does not have explorer.exe. insteed i think is nk.exe witch is the os. so without os igo wont work.
Isn't there any way we can skip the Windows Mobile GUI and directly start iGO?
Also, I don't think all neccessary files are loaded AFTER iGO was started. I think they are loaded before as the last INIT entry is the navigation software.
I don't know if Windows CE has some kind of regsvr32.exe or something similar.

I don't think it's possible. But I do know a solution - you should find a ROM with maximum RAM available to user.
I have one (Gen.Y) but I just install to much stuff onto my diamond and therefore the free memory is smashed

I think that you are confusing ROM (storage memory) & RAM (program memory). Program memory is what you need for flawless iGo performance. Try, for example, latest official HTC ROM, it should be better for RAM than most of the cooked ROMs.
I know the difference
It's just that I am running too much applications in the background (WisBar Advance, TouchResponse, Palringo and what not all) so that the free RAM is just smashed
Well, I guess I have to clean up a bit.
Thanks anyway

In that case, I have a definitive solution - you should by Raphael, like me. I'm able to run at the same time Garmin, iGo, Opera Mini, Opera Mobile, DotFred TaskMgr and much much more, and have absolutely no problems.
well i have searched any answer but failed to find an application able to do the following thing : viewing on your dev machine what is running on your windows mobile, noticely to check memory consumption and cpu load. i only found applications doing so on the mobile. thanks.
I don't know about any other apps like this, but Visual Studio includes a Process Viewer that allows you to view processes, threads and modules and kill processes. It doesn't display memory or CPU usage though.
Fdcsoft task manager is free and has what you want.

thats a good task manager for sure, but i fail to see how to deport the cpu/memory use monitoring on my desktop connected to the mobile.. ?
Ok I have been pulling my hair out about this. I have a HTC HD2 from t-mobile. I haven't reflashed or changed the rom. All I have done is install and customize the folders and some things like that. I will list the things I have installed and maybe someone can tell me what program is the problem. I have hard reset 2 times because it pisses me off so bad and before I do it again I wanted to see if anyone could help. The problem is if I get a text when I am sending or typing one the phone LLAAGGS really bad and sometimes locks up and I have to pull the battery. this happens alot of the time if I am doing anything when I get a text. Even trying to open a text to read and if I get a new text at that time.. LOCK.. or if it dont lock then its REALLy slow and there isnt any apps running that I can see. I always close apps and look and see what is running alot. Sometimes when I even try to use the phone to call someone it wont make the call... doesn't say anything like can't connect at this time or anything. I click on a contact and then call that contact and its like I never push call.. it lights up like I am trying but never starts to make the call. All this really sucks when you are trying to make a call or even talk to more then one friend at a time in text. can anyone help me find out what I need to do or what I am doing wrong. I haven't flashed the rom because I dont want to try something new and not like it and can't go back to the way it was. Please help.

Thanks
i thought i had alot installed on my device wow u win u really need to take them all off and work it out one by one only other thing i suggest is flash a new rom and use it for a couple of days without tweaks or apps to see if the fault could be with the rom
Try turning
off Manilla and running from the raw windows mobile screen. See if it still does the same.
Are you running task 2 before re-flashing?
Conflict?
That's a lot of apps, increasing the chances of a conflict with some dodgy software.
I am running TMOUS 2.10 on my Leo here in Aus and it works like a charm. Much more reliable and less conflicts than cooked roms.
I had an issue with swype, and discovered that when I popped out my sd card, lag in swype dissapeared instantly, so I backed up the content of my sd and reformatted, then copied files back onto sd..
I'm not sure if your problem is the same but try popping out the sd, with phone running, and see if it fixes your lag issues.
C'mon now - maybe the guy needs ALL 61 apps
Ive got the same problem. Its driving me crazy. Receiving a text message shouldn't lock up the device and require a soft reset. Its just crazy. I know exactly how frustrating it is to need to read a text or shoot one off and you cant do anything bc its frozen.
I will post my apps when I get a chance, I dont have near as much running as you do but maybe together we can find the culprit.
