Yesterday I got the mandatory Sprint Voice to text update. This really upset me as the main reason I rooted my phone was to get rid of the bloat ware. So now I have Sprint nagware to deal with. So today I installed and set up the Google Voice Mail program and it works really nice. So I decided to delete/uninstall the Sprint Voice Mail Program. I used Titanium back up and I deleted the program. Everything still works well so I figured it was gone and that was that. Later I looked in my app drawer and was surprised to see that the icon for the sprint voice mail was still there. So I tried to drag it into the garbage and it wouldn't go. So I go into root explorer and to to system>app and go down the list looking for a sprint widget that I needed to get rid of and didn't find one. I also made sure that the sprint voice mail program wasn't in there either. So I shut off the phone and started it again figuring that the program was still in memory. Well after the reboot the program is still on my phone and now it's acting like it's a brand new account and asking me if I want to set it up. So this comes to my question how do I get rid of the Sprint Voice Mail. I can't find it in my system folder so what's going on? Anyone else experience this???
Help is always appreciated............
Lisa
You can try to mount your system and remove it via Terminal Emulator. Its a pretty simple process with only a few commands if you want to have a go that route.

It's a system app, updatecore.apk or such
Not sure what updatecore.apk is but as you pointed out it's probably a big deal.
Driving home from work today I was thinking about all this and then it dawned on me that I didn't really delete the Sprint Voicemail app as I thought. Earlier I was using Titanium and I was about to delete the Sprint voice mail app when I realized that it was telling me it was going to delete "Data" only. So in reality I only deleted the Voicemail data and not the entire program. You are probably correct that this program is securely nestled within the core of the Android/HTC/Sprint package. Truly amazing as this may be one of those things that you cannot get rid of. Unless it resides in it's own .apk somewhere and I can target that one program I'm very hesitant at this point to go after it. The interesting thing about deleting the data is it seems to have reverted back to the older version. A box came up after I rebooted the phone asking me if I wanted to personalize my voice mail like I did the first time months ago. Plus being it's not technically "working" as it's not personalized the sprint genie can't target me for upgrade as it doesn't know I'm using it. What do you think of that idea?
So here is where I am. I have the Google voice mail working and it's a very cool little program. I have a "Google phone number" that is free and actually works but I don't have to do anything about it as my original phone number works the voice mail just fine. So in reality I may have beaten Sprint to at least a draw on this one................
So to recap, I would say, if you don't want the voice to text sprint app you could go into Applications and delete the "DATA" and then it doesn't know who you are. Just leave the sprint voice mail application in the "unsetup state" and the monster "Mandatory Update" can't find you. You have effectively turned off the sprint voice mail that way and then you can install a third party like Google voice mail or You mail or anything you want.
Give me you take on this idea. I think this is whats going on and this may be the only fix to opt out of the Sprint program.................
For future reference, all system (non-deletable) applications are located in /system/app. Use Root Explorer to go there and delete them. I think what he meant was to delete the Sprint Updater, which I think is Sprint_Updater.apk, also in that folder.

Ok.... I thought it was something VMCore.apk
I don't remember. I deleted it and put it back with the name "Sprint_VM.apk". Doesn't matter what it's named, but I think you're right about "VMCore.apk".
Okay Gentlemen, I have looked for all those files and the only one that is there is the Sprint_Updater.apk. Nothing there that has a VM or VVM or Sprint VVM or anything like that. I am running the .6 version of the Sprint stock 2.1. But I believe I have it disable for now. As I wrote previously by deleting the data file I have essentially not activated the program. If you do come up with the file to delete that would take the VVM with it I will certainly give it a try but there is nothing in the system>app folder that looks even close.
I so appreciate you taking you time to weigh in on this problem.
Thank you.........

For the life of me I couldn't find what the apk was named -_- Was about to flash 2.1 to find out ha ha
Though I think Regaw's toolbox may allow you to remove it.

See above, delete that to get rid of SVVM for good
Well Gentlemen, again I just went though that directory vary carefully again and there is nothing that even comes close to a VVM or "voice mail" reference at all. It's simply not there.
Have you guys deleted this off your phones before? I guess you all are running some other Rom then the stock one so you haven't faced this mandatory update thing. But the files you are suggesting to remove are not in that directory. As I mentioned the Updater is there in two versions Sprint Updater and just plane Updater.
I don't believe this issue is worth you flashing the stock rom just to check it but that is a real offer and I appreciate that. I admire you guys that flash these phones just for the heck of it. When I have flashed the phone it makes my heart stop.
But thank you for all your responses. I certainly appreciate it........

I don't use stock, and yes I have been able to eliminate VVM.... did you reboot after deleting? Are you looking under system/app?
Yes to both of your questions.
I was thinking the same thing that maybe the program was still resident in the memory so I pulled the battery and everything. It's Sprints FU to the rooting community I guess...............

Still, it should be removable Is it hiding in data/app or data/app-private for some reason?
Okay, you guys aren't going to believe this. But I rebooted the phone and I checked the data/app and the data/app-private. Found nothing in there. Then I went back to the app drawer and the offending program is GONE! I can't find any vestige of it anywhere. So I gather mission accomplished! I don't know what happened as earlier I did the reboot twice and pulled the battery each time and the third time was the charm for some reason. The only file I didn't remove was the Sprint_updater.apk. It's still there. But I have turned off the updates so I shouldn't be bothered by that either..............
Thank you all for your help. The android mystery continues..........

No problem! Glad you got it... let me know if you need anything else before I go to my Epic in a week or two
Hey everyone, after some research/testing ive been able to write a new PRL to the Hero! This means you can have 3G, even with no Sprint EVDO coverage!
THIS IS POSSIBLY DANGEROUS!! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IN ANYWAY FOR ANY LOSS OF PROPERTY OR MONEY! DO THE FOLLOWING AT YOUR OWN RISK. READ THIS ENTIRE THREAD BEFORE TRYING ANYTHING.
That being said, this is most likely frowned upon by sprint, so do so at your own ethical reason as well.
I did this with a stock, 2.1 hero; i have not tested it on anything else.
Insperation for it here, done on the evo: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073
Ive also found that i now almost ALWAYS have max bars.
What youll need:
HTC Hero Diag Drivers:
http://rs79.rapidshare.com/files/293529424/HTC_Hero_DIAG_Drivers.zip
CDMA Workshop:
http://www.cdma-ware.com/workshop/demo/cdma_workshop.rar
New PRL:
http://dana.ucc.nau.edu/add46/00001.prl
Start by installing the diag driver, as well as the normal hero drivers.
Then go to the dialer and enter ##DIAG#
Open CDMA Workshop, assign your COM port.
Press connect then read and verify the information on the left.
Finally, go to the "Other" tab, select write under "PRL" and choose your new prl
When you see the finished message, reboot your phone.
Go to settings and updated your data profile, then, enjoy!
To revert
Just update your PRL from Settings

How is this any different that Techknowfiles PRLs that he created for using the old Alltell towers? I followed his thread for a long time and some of the PRLs he created worked ok, some did not. Did you actually create a new PRL, or is your 00001 the same as his?
Regardless, if at anytime this doesn't work, a PRL update through Device Self service will revert you back to a legit Sprint PRL...
If I'm not mistaken, this won't work if you're running cm/aosp based roms. You must use a sprint based rom, can anyone confirm this ?

Yes , just like manually updating a prl. I meant you won't able to do this with cm/aosp

You can flash the PRL on CM/2.2, The problem is, you cant update your data profile. So you will need to revert to 2.1 to apply this.
And this is techs PRL file, you can use whatever one you want.
I'll give this a shot, post results later
not trying to steal OP's thread but there's a much easier way to do this:
1. obtain msl code (if you haven't already)
2. ##775# and enter msl code to access manual prl updating
3. select new prl to be updated
4. update profile and reboot
i remember when someone else cooked up the prl's 01337 and 31337, the results were random for me. no real coverage gained and they usually slowed down my speeds. it's fun to hack things though

thank you for linking that! i was trying to remember where that thread was but i gave up searching for it because it was late last night
obtaining msl is so much easier thanks to that thread!
as for the custom prl, i'm getting mixed results. this sort of hack is really hit or miss depending on your location. if you're trying it out, i suggest using it a whole day and see how your coverage is and probably try out some other prl's. the evo thread that is linked in the first post has a couple other prl's to try out.
OK hahaha... After I applied this PRL I barely get any data coverage, it stays at 1x the whole time
YMMV just because I'm having problems doesn't mean you guys will.
##PRL# doesnt work on any of the stock roms, also my method doesnt require you to find your MSL...
If your having any problems, MAKE SURE YOU UPDATE YOUR DATA PROFILE!
Also, you download the PRL on the computer.. not the phone.
Also, if you want your MSL, use "MSL Reader" from the market, its the easiest method.

Yeah I noticed that as well, stock didn't work so I flashed nfx's 2.1 sense rom. And I tried updating data profile but unfortunately it stayed the same.
Also I couldn't use cdma workshop (unless i wanted to run a VM or possibly wine) seeing as I'm running linux.
Only downside to the MSL Reader is that it requires root - not that that's really a problem for more than the majority of the people, but I could be one for those that stumble upon this thread using google or something.
But yes, you would be correct CDMA workshop does make this process relatively simple

You will have to flash a verizon prl. Also make sure the settings in qpst revert back to verizon...especially the ppp configs. If it was properly flashed to cricket, flashing the modem alone won't do it. More them likely, all the settings will have to be corrected.
yep. you will need to enter all the VZN info that was removed to have it hooked up on cricket and you will also have to hope the phone isnt blacklisted on VZN's ESN list. if it is your friend will have a nice android MP3 player that he can play games on.

Ok...download the samsung drivers and a program called qpst. I hear Build 355 is out haven't had a chance to use that one but should be the same. Anyways, hook up your phone to qpst and switch it to dial up networking. Select add new port and find which port you hooked it up to. Name the port COMX (put the port # where x is). Under label name it usb. Hit enter then find the phone and click it. Then select service programming. Then go to the roam tab and then go down to the send file option select browse and locate the prl and then select flash to phone. Make sure it is a *prl and not a zip. Phone will reboot and then attempt *228. Im not infront of the computer but thats the gist. If you can't get it let me know and I will attempt a complete walkthrough. Depending on what software you're on...dun can be accessed through the wirless network settings or **33284 ( Then enter spc 000000).
And actually I think I just figured out a simple way to get settings back to vzw. use qpst build 355 and input all the correct cdma info for verizon. And hit write to phone. The phones are prewired for three g only through vzw and that build of qpst will not be able to rewrite the settings so upon reboot the original vzw settings and password will reappear.

You can...it's just more work. And depending on the carrier, like sprint, requires you know someone that will add your flashed phone to the database. There are methods...but as they violate certain laws I cannot discuss on this forum. Since the fascinate is a verizon phone it's software is typically already hard wired for big red. So apn and nv values will revert upon incomplete programming. It's rather simple to flash a phone back to verizon.
I am out of the atrix game but there is something that i came up with during some research about editing the build.prop file. This is in reguards to the problem with the Name display feature not working for rogers atrix users.
I have found a string that is in reference to CNAP (Caller Name Presentation). If someone with the name display wants to add this line to thier build.prop file and check it out. It might solve the problem....it also may not. I know its not specific to android in general as i had a captivate that name display worked perfectly on. So it has to be enabled somewhere within the software. Anyways, someone give it a shot and see what happens.
Code:
#1=enable, 0=disable
ro.ril.enable.cnap=1
Just tried on my Prepaid Fido and doesnt work
I am Bell Atrix
it could be no name display on Prepaid plan

You WILL have to have name display activated on your carrier...
I would try this but no way I'm calling those Rogers ass-hats to get name display re-enabled.
But I am curious to see if it works.

I would love to try this if I get some step by step guide on how to change the code...
Can someone please let me know and I will try it out this weekend... I have the same ****yass problem with Rogers... and those bastards would just say "Oh if the phone is not a Rogers phone, we are sorry but can't help you in anyways"...
I don't mind calling those guys if this fix potentially works. I would also like to try this for you but I'm not too familiar with editing the Build.prop file. If some basic instructions could be provided I would definitely try it out.

can't help you with build.prop but if you call rogers, get tech support and say "I need to disable the name display on my account" they should know what you're talking about. If not keep calling until you get someone who does. Maybe I got lucky the first guy I talked to knew exactly what I was getting at. no more payphone
Can someone help this guy please.
When I get my hands on an Atrix again I will try it.
Install root explorer, you must be rooted, navigate to /system/ mount rw, open build.prop. that's the simple way. You can aLao do this through adb if needed.
Stock Bell Atrix on Rogers with updated radio, Rooted, deodexed, Honeycomb theme, and frozen!

Did you call Rogers to enable name id back before you tested it?
Never disabled it, I've only had the phone for 4days. Guess I might have to now, although on the motorola support forums they say it may get fixed in a "future" update.....

@everyone
An update. We may be able to fix this on a future software update for Atrix. While I cannot guarantee that you'll see the Name display functionality on the Atrix when using Rogers/Fido you would hopefully be able to at least see the number of the caller so it would pull them from your phonebook. As I understand it, new people calling that aren't in your phone book may just come in as a phone number at that time.

I like to see tests tried twice before I say it works or doesn't.
And in this case it doesn't. I tried editing it via adb (used sed to insert the value in the prop file). Rebooted. Called, there was the ubiquidous Pay phone.

Is this problem only for AT&T Atrix unlocked for Rogers or the Bell on as well?
Anyone with a Bell Atrix on rogers can you try this.
I just attempted to insert the code as instructed using root explorer. restarted the phone and called from a friends phone and the caller id came up as 'pay phone'.
I am using a bell atrix, rooted and unlocked, on Fido monthly plan.
I really couldn't find a clear answer on any of these, so I thought I would ask. Sorry if it's been cleared up.
1. Can I get VVM on my Epic flashed on Cricket to work?
2. Has a practical MMS solution been discovered?
Sorry, like I said, I searched but couldn't find a clear answer. Thanks.
1. VVM - not sure - if it's something the Kyocera has on it as a stock application, probably could just take that app. You can always use Google Voice as well for VVM. Not sure if they actually support VVM, though.
2. This has been done, supposedly, but I believe the solution is ROM specific for some reason. Someone hacked one together and offered to do it for other ROMs -- I would search the forums for his post about it. (MMS, Epic, Cricket tags should find it) Basically, you'll need the custom APK to use, in addition to correctly setting up the APN's on the back end of the phone.
The guy who did the MMS post should have steps on how to do everything for #2. For #1, I've discovered that for Google Voice to work, you *need* to have the GV phone number in a similar area code as your Cricket number. i.e. Houston has 281, 713, and 832. I tried using a Dallas forwarding number and it wouldn't work. Using an 832- extension, did work, though (and my phone number starts with a 281 area code).
Hope that helps!
Yes, I'm currently using GV, but it doesn't always forward and some messages get left on my regular vm.
Yeah I did find a post where a dude said that he had it all figured out but then he took it down saying that he was going to post it on Ebay for $1 each. So that's why I figured I'd ask.
Personally, I'm thinking of getting this flashed onto Boost. It might run better and about the same price. Too many headaches with Cricket and this phone (plus ****ty service).
How do you like the new GB update? To me, it sucks. Seems like there is nothing new on my phone except for the design/menus and stuff like that. I was bummed. **** they still have Asphalt 5 listed on there... like wtf. I was hoping that the GB update would help me with my cricket reception, but it doesn't so that's why I'm thinking about Boost also.
