Bad news for the HTC HD2 owners: your beloved WinMo smartphones does not qualify for a Windows Phone 7 upgrade. The reason is more than ridiculous but you can't do anything to change the situation: the HD2 packs five hardware buttons instead of only 3.

not true a big misleading fact or confused fact..
requirement is of 3 navigation buttons winlogo start, back and search. ur common send and end buttions doesnt count.
HD2 also has 3 navigation buttons but instead of search it has home. and thats the problem.
very similar to what 6.5 done to HD as it didnt had logo start but diamond2 has that and got official 6.5.
hope ppl understand now.
I'll have to disagree that the HD2's buttons is a "problem". Microsoft's excuse is pretty lame. What's so hard about remapping the home button to search ?
Buttons in WM are all mappable via software or firmware. At this point,MS is just being non-committal, and hope that HD2 users will upgrade to new WM7 phones.
Well, I think MS is making a mistake. HD2 users will have no incentive to remain with WM if they have to ditch their HD2 to buy a new phone. They could easily jump to Android, or iPhone.

don't worry, i'm sure, xda developers people can handle it!
Shouldn't this be in the HD2 forum not HD!
Don't worry I don't believe HTC would upgrade an "old" device when WP7S comes out

Haha, After HD, I am done with HTC already.
And I was considering buying the HD2 today. Not going to happen, I won't make the same mistake twice.

This is really old news and I'm not saying it's wrong, but I'm not saying it's right. Although there might not be an official update for hd2 from htc or your carrier, changing the mapping of 3 buttons to support an os is not the hardest thing in the world. Also, Win7 has been seen running on HD2 at Barcelona, so if they could do it, I'm positive xda will have no problem.
Andy why is this in the HD forum and not HD2?
So it looks like the HD2 is in fact getting Windows Mobile 7! I'm pretty stoked! I assume that we can upgrade even with the "cooked" ROMs?
http://news.softpedia.com/news/HTC-HD2-Will-See-Official-Windows-Mobile-7-Upgrade-127718.shtml
Wow is this for real? Legit??
That article was written in Nov 2009 and was in response to a tweet from an HTC employee which was later withdrawn. They (HTC) have stated that the HD2 will *NOT* be getting WP7 upgrade. Please delete this thread as it is misinformation. Thanks
Yes it is! Three more links for proof:
http://www.slashgear.com/htc-hd2-windows-phone-7-install-gets-video-demo-08106687/
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/28/htc-hd2-gets-early-windows-phone-7-os-port-could-be-released-be/
http://www.redmondpie.com/htc-hd2-to-get-windows-mobile-7-upgrade-9140128/
@the wannabe mod: Read the last three links, one is dated October 8th 2010.
Another link: http://www.pcworld.com/article/192783/htc_hd2_caught_running_windows_phone_7_os.html
These links are for an UNOFFICIAL port of WP7 which is still purely speculative at the moment, and have nothing to do with an OFFICIAL upgrade.
Not all of them. But it's proof that it's not out of the question. Do you have a link for Microsoft or HTC saying this will not be getting the OS?

I cant be bothered to look for one.....
Howevever MS have repeatedly stated the hardware requirements for WP7 handsets and the HD2 does not fit them....... that doesnt mean it wont work on the HD2 but MS themselves wont be the ones to make it work........
Pretty sure there will be a port sooner or later but there will not be an "official" upgrade........
Uh...there's a Samsung phone with the SAME specs as the HD2 that is the first phone to have it stock.
I know, Im not saying its not possible to run the OS on the HD2.......
Im saying MS wont bother to make it work on the HD2.....
Firstly because they're busy enough with the new handsets and secondly because they know someone else will do it anyway.......
That's great but I've seen many recent sources that say HD2 will get it.

Get what??
A port of WP7......??
We've all seen it.........
Nobody is disputing that fact..........
However......
it will be from a 3rd party...
NOT from Microsoft themselves.......
Yes, the official upgrade. Read some of the links I posted.
I've also seen images of HD2 running W7. Any literature on how to get this now?

Mod, delete or close this.
It is well known that the hd2 is NOT getting an official wp7 upgrade. Your links are either old articles or new ones showing the one video released by cotulla showing him boot wp7, which was just from him playing around and is a proof of concept video. It will be a long time before a port is made by him if it ever is... and if it is made, it will most likely not be fully functional. Please do your research and look at dates on articles before posting misinformation.

Well its been stated: http://apcmag.com/microsoft-no-windows-phone-7-upgrade-for-windows-mobile-6x-devices.htm
They's this thing about only 3 button control for windows 7, the HD2 is capable I'm sure of running WM7 but they will NOT be an upgrade!!
wp7
We are not going to see an official upgrade but Cotulla is working on the port, which is mentioned in one of the links that you posted. We will get it just not official.

And again: read your own links and read the posts of conantroutman. The links are either old (and suggesting there is a chance) or showing a port of WP7 (by a developer).
There was some links here, but of course - not for HD2. Still waiting then...

I don't know if you've noticed, but this xda.cn thread is from today.
I am confused
is there a wp7 for HD2 or not? the linke is too chinese for me
There is some download link, but even though i have an account on xda.cn - i can't download because of some credis i suppose (google translator ftw.).
sthEn, can you paste some info from the thread here? After translating it off course.
"3 files I've downloaded, to be sure the file is uploaded to the excellent eggs today"
There should be some mirrors soon thanks to one of the xda.cn people
Basically, nobody've tested it yet - too soon i guess.
Google translation from the above site:
HTC HD2 takes all three large-scale system to run successfully WP7
Windows Mobilephone the king of the group, has once again implemented a perfect trial run of WP7,HTC HD2 (parameters), the system has successfully transplanted Android 2.2 onto HD2, and now once again is trying to run WP7 for real, HD2 an emperor once again, becomes a focus of attention.
HTC HD2 performance of mobile phone configuration is in full compliance with the requirements of WP7, the screen has a 4.3 inch capacitive touch screen, built-in 1GHz processor and 500 million pixel camera. From the already listed HTC HD7 (parameters)of view, HD2 processor and the same type HD7, HD2's only drawback is its key design which does not meet the physical requirements of WP7, but it will not stop it from running WP7. Time is drawing near, let us work together to cheer!
Damn....I guess I wont get to sleep...This is freaking crazy....

welcome to xda.
to answer you question, no there is no wp7 rom available for hd2. there are themes that emulate it.
additionally, this has been asked with new threads about it quite a bit...please do use the search function.
again, welcome.
Wow...awesome answer! Saved me the trouble
Really?
I saw a video over on BGR website showing a working port of windows phone 7 on an HD2 Here is the link if you want to check it out, but I would love Windows phone 7 on my HD2 if at all possible.

We have all seen that video, and it's currently unknown if that is real, or just an emulator image...because it certainly isn't RTM, nor are the chinese releaseing the image to anyone.

Really because to my knowledge XDA China is responsible for the port and video,...Guess I could be wrong...I always am according to the wife LOL
Right, but XDA China is in no way affiliated with XDA-Developers, and the chinese are not releaseing any information on their "port" until, according to their words, "enough people are mad enough that it's not out yet". So yeah, personally I think it's fake.
In another thread, another Chinese guy called the number from the video a couple times and talked to the maker of the video. First he said that if the rom was flashed, there was no way of going back to winmo... then the last time he talked to him he said something about it being false.
What I heard, and what I believe to be true now, is that the Chinese got whole of one of the wp7 test hd2s that m$ used to test and develop wp7. Its well known they used hd2 to test in the early stages, and it doesn't surprise me that one of these devices surfaced. Unfortunately, I have a feeling we will never know for sure what was used for the video. I think we're still a long way away from using wp7 on our hd2.

Now that makes total sense, I can see how that could have unfolded.
Soo yeah, It was on the main page recently that a build of windows phone 7 would soon be released for HD2. I know I'm begging for a good flaming for this but is there anywhere I can find an update on the status of this project? I know its a locked down OS and blah blah blah but I use the HD2 as my business phone and would like it to have a more business appeal to it. Does amnyone have an idea on the status of this project?

WM7 will come , but like chefs told its just a demo. i dont think its will for a daily use. Android is enough .
i just don't get it. can't the device handle the os?
I think it comes down to if the team is willing to crack the OS so everything works. Last I heard, the thing thats holding back release and making the OS usable would be Windows Genuine Phone. It prevents non-genuine versions of windows phone to work properly. Without live tiles and access to apps, the usefulness of windows phones is non-existent.

of course it can, its just the fact that porting a complete OS is a massively complex task that us mere mortals can barely even comprehend.....
the devs need time and for others to be patient....
