Fring audio through bluetooth headsets - Nexus One General

Anyone Fring users out there able to get caller/mic audio through the headset?
My setup is Blueant Q1 (8.21 firmware) with N1. Google listen and other audio apps play to the headset though the new A2DP support (sweet!). Calls though vodafone also works fine.
Could not find help googling around. Great forum. Thanks for any pointers!

No cigar for you or any other Fring user, including myself.
It is one of the outstanding feature reqs with Fring, along with
removing the uber annoying buzz messaging notification.
They seems to move reaaaaally slow, so it is going to be a while,
I am afraid.

Thanks for this. I can't see this as being a complicated thing to add. People with bluetooth car sets must have the same problem right?
I'd use the N1 supplied headset/mic, but it broke after the second week.
Fring if you are listening.. give me an option to get rid of the stupid test call on my friends list and like everyone else I want to be in control of my audio notifications. For the rest,,, great work.

A new Fring software update and still no bluetooth/headset or speakerphone support..... anyone care to venture a guess as to why this is such a difficult feature to add in?

Well,
an app that outputs audio, should not be concerned with just how that audio ends up getting delivered - over built-in jack or BT. All an app should do for that to work is to declare it wants to use BT when it is available.
Unfortunately, the Android doesn't work like that. Enabling app for BT seems to be a fairly involved affair, way too complicated.
As for speaker, same thinking should apply, except we lack a HW speaker button, so app needs to provide a toggle via its own UI.
And like I mentioned, Fring is a very weird app in how its been maintained, with updates barely trickling through, one every few months - which is way too slow.

audio to internal speaker

Has anyone had any experience here writing code to take advantage of the internal speaker on our phone devices?
I know the external speaker is a standard peice of WM hardware, but there must be a way to call the internal speaker as well... this would be very useful for coding VOIP apps, as you can imagine.
Any thoughts?
Apparently the elusive Cicero networks product "Cicerophone" handled VOiP calls using the internal speaker!
This is something that other developing apps, such as Skype for WM, have failed to figure out so far.
Unfortunately, Cicero is very secretive, and as of yet no one else seems to know how to achieve this.
Anyone here know anything?
Which one is the internal speaker?
I think I wrote some audio routing code for this once...
V
By "internal" I mean the handset speaker usually reserved only for phone calls.
Windows Mobile devices have always had an audio speaker which is easily accessible to developers as a standard audio device. However, phone devices have a SECOND speaker, one that is smaller and not as amplified, which is used to listen to phone conversations when the device is held up to your head. This smaller speaker is what I've seen called the "internal", although I admit that it may not be the correct term for it.
I'm asking because I would actually like to route audio to that speaker for certain applications, especially VoIP, which until now has been going to loudspeaker (which causes audio feedback and privacy issues).
Do you have experience with this sort of thing?
Devices from Eten, e.g. X500, M700 have a skype service programe that redirect vioces from speaker to earphone. I don't know how it works but i just made a test to trick the service and direct the sound to earphone when making VOIP calls.

Hi! Where can i buy/download cicerophone ?
Partially Solved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I apologize for cross posting, but if you use the provided wired headset, everything is OK and voip (i.e.: Fring, etc) runs great, no echo e no voice feedback.
TRY IT!!!!!!!
I thought we all knew that already...
I've been using a BT headset and the BTAudio app to reroute all sound input/output to the headset. Problem is, you have to initialize it every time you want to make/receive a VOIP call, otherwise it will eat your battery very quickly since it keeps a constant audio channel live to your headset, even when there is no sound currently being played.
The problem is, when I leave voip on and slip the phone in my pocket, I'm not always using my wired headset and/or BT headset when the phone rings, and its silly that I can't use hardware that's sitting on my device in my hands.
Hi ,
I searched and couldn't find cicerophone anywehere .
do u know by any chance where we can download or buy it ?
tnx
no, its not for sale.
It was developed to sell to a telecom, and they are still trying to sell the technology. There never was a consumer edition of the software, only beta and evaluation versions that some people were fortunate enough to get their hands on for review purposes. They have done a very good job of keeping a VERY tight lid on this- its not available ANYWHERE, and they don't have any plan of making it available to the general public.
This tree has been barked up many times, its a lost cause.
Maybe some guy can have a look at the SkypeSettings.exe and SkypeSettings.dll files from Eten.
From what I saw, it only deals with the WAV1: device. No more devices are listed. Probably it captures the audio from it and than sends it to front speaker.
It does not run on my PDA. The settings tab also appears grayed out, so the app know it is not an Eten.
Unfortunately I could not debug the file on my device, given that IDA does not work on WM6, but probably both files have a check for Eten device, and if it is of a different brand the apps terminate.

I don't see an option for stereo bluetooth (?), JF 1.5, ADP1

So, after stumbling around I managed to get JF's build on my G1. Cool! I'm insanely impressed with the snappiness of the UI and the multitude of new features. I connected my bluetooth headset (Motorola H710), which totally works, pairs, etc. just as it did before the update. I don't see an option for stereo bluetooth, though. I have 'connected to phone audio' checked under 'connect' and I have the same checked under 'phone'. I presume this is all I need to do. Here's the issue:
I get no audio through the bluetooth headset. All audio (system sounds, music, and calls) is routed through the earpiece on the handset. The bluetooth's mouthpiece works fine, and the other person hears me loud and clear when I speak through it.
Help?
I'm very sorry if this is an obvious answer. I browsed the first page and didn't see anything.
Well, I upgraded to the Cupcake radio and now I can hear through bluetooth. I definitely still don't get my miscellaneous audio through it, though- button presses, music, etc. So... I guess AD2P is what I'm having a problem with. Does my headset just not accept an AD2P profile?
yes you need to have AD2P headsets in order for you to hear music thru it
Thanks. Looks like this one can be chalked up to me being an idiot.
Is there a popularly recommended set that people here like?
i got these and love it http://www.cellphoneshop.net/855.html. But i see alot of ppl using these http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-MOTO...CO5Q/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1241926911&sr=8-5. i like mine cause iy can look like a reg bt and still have music play thru it. i use it at work all day but they dont know im listening to music.

BT Audio for Android

Ok, I'm looking for some way to route the audio of my Magic to a mono BT headset. I have been searching the threads and Google for days now and unless I'm blind (come to think of it I've been called this before) I can't find any app for this purpose. I had a program called BT Audio for my WM phone that worked like a charm. Anyone got any ideas or up for the challenge to making an app let me know?
Android 1.5 introduced A2DP support, so all you should need to do is pair the device and fire up the music app (might be a couple more settings in between, but AFAIK it's a simple pairing job). So I'm wondering if your headset doesn't support A2DP and that WinMo app was channeling audio through the regular headset profile.

Your right my headset doesn't support A2DP (It's cheep ). I know it is possible though, cause sometimes when I am using an app or game with audio and someone calls in I hear the audio through the BT headset for a sec before the phone connects.
WinMo had a few different apps for this so I'm surprised that I haven't been able to find anything for android yet. I didn't think it would be that hard to do.
It could be that its built in to the ROM that I have and I just haven't found the settings for it yet. I'm using the My Hero ROM. If anyone knows Let me know.
Hi!
Once you pair your device (on my Cyan ROM anyway...) you can go into the BT settings, long select the device you just paired with, choose options and if it supports X feature on the BT profile (in this case, audio) then there will be a check box that you can click to enable that function/feature.
Other than that, you might have some luck searching the Market for an app similar to BT Audio. I used to have a Shadow and I know exactly what app you are talking about, all in all though I was less than impressed with the meager selection of apps I had available compared to what I have now; and definitely even the out-of-box experience is light years ahead of any WM experience. What I ended up doing instead was just grabbed a new Stereo BT headset and problem was solved There was one on http://www.woot.com a little while ago that I'm loving (LG BT250 I think?).
Good luck!

I wish I could . I didn't mean the one I have was cheap in the way of money cause it cost me $80. Cheap in that it was the cheapest of the headsets that I could get with voice recognition built in as I work and drive around a lot of noise. I didn't want to pay the $130 for the good one.
I wonder if there is anyone with the right skills out there that can write a app like this. hint hint.
I do appreciate all the work that goes into making these cool app that I use every day so if nothing shows up, I guess I'll have to live without.
Thanks guys!

Dunno, I think they just want to advertise the site in their sig...
I have a stereo Bluetooth headset (Plantronics 855) that works great with the Droid; however, there are times when I want to sent A2DP to my Jawbone Prime, which is not A2DP compatible. The profile only shows phone audio when selecting the device in the Android BT manager. What needs to happen to transmit full audio to a non-A2DP headset is enabling SCO (Synchronous Connection-Oriented) connection. I have searched everywhere I cannot find a software gateway that enables this feature in the Droid. There is an app in the market called Sound Route Switcher that claims to enable this but then blames Android for is application not working with Bluetooth.
I will keep looking and post anything that I find but I am stumped to this point.
Thanks dbigdawg
There's a little Greek in there for me, but I appreciate the effort and I'm sure many others will too. Look forward to what you can find.
Hate to bring back an OLD thread, but has there been a solution found?
Last I looked was back in April.........................Nothing
But like I said before I have been known to be blind to anything past the end of my nose!
I really miss being able to listen to music all day and not have on headphones.
Thanks for the reply bud. Maybe with some luck I can see if I can find that old file I had that was supposed to work, but didn't on 1.5. Now that I use 2.1, it might be a different situation. If I can locate it I'll post it here.
Hi, there is a new app named "Super BT Mono" which could route audio to bluetooth mono earpiece. It might be what you are looking for.
Thanks
Thanks for the info. That Super BT Mono did the trick for me.

[Q] Force music to non-A2DP BT device

So I've asked this before back when I had the Moment, but why can't I stream to BT on a non-A2DP device? No before answering the obvious, I experience the same things on the Epic that I did on the Moment where if I have music streaming, playing from the SD, etc and a call comes in, the music will automatically pause and I can take the call. Once I end the call, I the music will play for about a second or more through my BlueAnt Z9i BT and then it will revert back to the stock speaker on the phone itself. So what is preventing someone from taking advantage of that lapse of time where the music is coming through the BT and make it happen all the time? I'm sure there are COUNTLESS people who could use and benefit from this instead of buying a dedicated BT, I might be able to stream wireless from my phone to my car stereo (BT calls capable, but I cannot stream directly to it as an input), to my PC (which has BT), etc. Just throwing it out there since I've always wondered why we couldn't capitalize on the second or two and make it a normal operation. I tried to break this post into a couple of paragraphs, but the site wouldn't let me. Anyways, thanks all.
I would also be interested in this. I was able to do this with windows mobile so there's no doubt that it can be done on a non a2dp headset.
The fact that it happens, even for a second, tells me that something is delayed that is telling it to stop. Telling it to start might be in a whole different ballpark, but point is, it should be possible. I've got 3 different BT's floating around my house...one in the house sitting around on my desk, one that I always take with me in the car (gotta be safe, ya know ) and another I keep in the garage incase I get a call while I'm working on something and/or out mowing the lawn. I'd love to even be able to be following around the GF (shoot me now) while she's shopping...imaging how much better it would be to be able to play music or hear my games without people around me knowing the wiser. I don't want to have to buy and then wear a stereo headset.
App in the Marketplace called "BTSwitch" works on my devices. try out the lite version first theres a little audio flaw with the stereo music being converted to mono (i'm guessing) but then i'm an audiophile.

I'm trying this as well at the very moment. I only see one app with that name and I don't see anything referencing a lite version. My BT doesn't even like to connect while this app is installed, causing the normal BT settings to not even allow it to pair up. I had to remove the app and reboot the phone to get the BT to connect through the normal Menu > Wireless & Networks > Bluetooth Settings before it would connect again.
I know this may not be the best timing to bump this w/ all the Froyo excitement, but I'm sure myself and others would like to see this happen. I've still got my fingers crossed that maybe someone on the sidelines could help.
It's called Super Mono BT.....They have a Froyo addition as well as a "free" edition...Free addition is just a 5 day trial, after that it's 2.99. It works fine but it's not in stereo so it sounds like AM radio, LMAO. Worth a shot though just to try.
I was able to install the app, but it doesn't work for me...yet. The problem is that is requires Cynanogen Mod and I don't have that since I've (as of yesterday) flashed my phone back to stock DI18 while waiting for Sprint to send me an OTA notice to update to Froyo. I was WAY too buddy via the download available here, so I guess I wait to use this BT app. Thanks for the reply though, I look forward to being able to use it.

Why aren't bluetooth microphones supported?

I just assumed that I could use any bluetooth microphone for voip, voice recording etc. I currently do not have any bluetooth device but I tried 3 at a friends and they all paired for sound, but failed to work in using a voice recording app or a voip app. In a voip app the sound went strange (long sounds on the dial tone buttons) and then the sound resumed coming out of the tablet even though the headset device was showing as connected. Only a reboot solved this.
So I assume the bluetooth stack doesn't support recording, but why not? Isn't this a basic thing at this point? If I connect a bluetooth headset with mic that should be my input and output on sound for the time it is connected.
Or has anyone had success with a certain bluetooth model for recording?
No one can provide info on this? Is this the norm for tablets? I would assume even some ancient gingerbread phone would work with bluetooth headset/mic.
Does cyanogen team ever modify the kernel to include more functionality such as this?
I'd check other bluetooth threads around this section, but I've heard several people who've used bluetooth headsets with Nexus tablets. It may be a setting issue (particularly the device setting under bluetooth and the app settings concerning headsets).

Same here, Plantronics bluetooth headset works perfectly for voip calls using Talkatone.
Thanks for the info. I don't have the model names off-hand but I'll ask my friend what they were. I wasn't aware that once a bluetooth device was paried that there were any additional options. I was under the impression that it was simply pair and use. With the case of a headset/mic I assumed it was inherited as your sound output/input for all apps while paired. The voip I tried is csipsimple and a voice recording app. I'm glad to at least some models work but I hope it isn't hit and miss and you have to be selective of what bluetooth device you use but rather something I was doing.
I didn't expect there to be any settings as well because even with no bluetooth recording device paired, I don't see anywhere in the settings recording recording (like mic volume).
Can't get mine to work. Single ear set I don't even get sound. Just dead air all around. The Southwing SA505 stereo gets sound fine but no mic function and on Groove ip no sound or mic on single ear or stereo. I even checked the settings making sure bluetooth was selected.
I'm from Canada so I can't try talkatone as I can't get google voice. I now purchased a btheadset. It pairs fine and I hear audio in all apps but I haven't found one app yet that works with the bluetooth mic. I wanted a voip sip app. I've pretty much tried all the free ones and other users have posted comments of bluetooth issues as well. There are a couple of paid sip apps that claim to support bluetooth, but I don't want to buy them to only find they don't.
So yes, android supports bluetooth mics, my thread title is inaccurate, but it seems the vast majority of recording apps do not have proper bluetooth support. Can someone name any app besides talkatone, even a voice recorder that works with bluetooth so I can just test it?
I'm actually surprised it's this bad. Bluetooth audio isn't that cutting edge. It should pair and now act as your soundcard so to speak. I initially thought to blame the OS because I thought any app that requests to play a sound or record a sound, would be re-directed by the OS to now use the bluetooth device.
I'm pretty sure it works exactly like this on windows. Or for example, I have a usb headset on my pc. It shows up as a soundcard. I make it the default and every app now uses that. No developer had to code to use a usb headset/mic, it just works.
Again a little disappointed that it's been a little trying just to get a bluetooth headset to function properly. I tried 3 at my friends that all pair fine and work flawlessly on his playbook in all his apps, and now I bought 1 so it's hard to say all of these bluetooth headsets have quirks and don't work properly with android.
Still trying to get this working. It pairs fine, and shows in the bluetooth details as being connected with phone audio and media audio.
It's a Aluratek ABH01F which I've read great things about. It supports a2dp. I'm not too familiar with bluetooth and microphones so I'm not sure if there is anything else to check for android to support a bluetooth microphone.
I don't know why I didn't think of it before but I tried google's voice search and it doesn't work either. I can hear the audio fine, just no mic.
Can anyone confirm if google's voice search works with their bluetooth mic? You probably have to walk out of the room to verify it's not the units mic that is picking it up obviously.
I'm not convinced bluethooth mics work at all on the nexus 7. I could chalk it up to my headset just doesn't place nice with the nexus 7 but again I tried 3 bluetooth devices at my friends. I found this post on another site:
Well, I got around to testing a bluetooth headset. single earpiece, Avantalk AH28. Not the best, but it works fine with a phone. Paired with the tablet fine. I dialed on groove ip - dial tones came from the tablet, the ringing transferred to the earpiece, when phone was answered there was no sound transmission at all- not from the bluetooth earpiece, or from the tablet. Just dead air. Tried it twice.
2nd test- google music played from tablet- not into the earpiece.
I have a stereo bluetooth headset with mic that I can test with but will have to charge that one up first. Will get back to you.
************************************************** ****
Got to my stereo Southwing SA505 bluetooth test. It worked to play music from tablet beautifully. Did not work with groove IP- went in and made sure settings were set for bluetooth- Mic did not work.

Again, I hear audio fine via bluetooth, so I wonder if some of you were thinking the bluetooth mic was working but it was actually the unit's mic.
This app called tapemachine specifically states it has bluetooth support. It fails for me when I change it to bluetooth in the settings, can someone else try it?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.samalyse.free.tapemachine&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5zYW1hbHlzZS5mcmVlLnRhcGVtYWNoaW5lIl0.
So I'm starting to think my thread title is correct. If I am, I'm hoping there is a way to hack some file changing the available audio profiles. I've read others doing something similar with different devices when the manufacturer disable those audio profiles. I would find it doubtful that google/asus would do this though.
Anyway, if anyone can try that app, or confirm that say grooveip is using the bluetooth mic and not the device. An easy test is tap on the unit mic while recording and see if you or the person you are talking to hears that.
No one? I know a couple of you said it worked, but are you sure grooveip is actually recording via the mic? I can hear phone calls using various sip apps with bluetooth, but I know the mic isn't recording. One of the headsets my friend has is a Motorola MOTOROKR S9 Stereo Bluetooth Headphones. Link here: http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-S9-Bluetooth-Headphones-Packaging/dp/B0017KTOJK.
I've only tried stereo headsets, so maybe that is the issue. The Motorola HS850 is a single ear piece, I'm not sure what plantronics set you have.
I'd really appreciate if someone else can verify if bluetooth is working. If bluetooth recording in fact works with the nexus 7, I must be really unlucky with 4 headsets that don't, which I find highly unlikely or nexus 7 has poor bluetooth support. The only thing left is my bluetooth hardware is broken which I find even more unlikely. Aradreamer, you say you've seen several posts saying bluetooth works, but I haven't found one post explicitly stating bluetooth recording works. I found more post on other forums clearly stating it doesn't work.

odd odd ...
first off i have the Nexus 7 16g with it rooted.
heres what i did first i bought the samsung HM1200 didnt thoroughly test that 1 because i figured it just wouldnt work with the device ( or was broken ) once i started to get all this screeching out of it... i heard sound momentarily then all it did was the screeching at different levels. returned it yesterday. then i added a couple more bucks ( about $27 total ) and got the plantronics M20 took it home and crossed my fingers. got it all it paired up and what not and ended up with the same condition except now the mic is working perfectly. i tested this thoroughly now over and over inside and outside and also away from the N7 to be sure the mic is working. this is great BUT i cannot hear any sound at all coming in to the N7 except the same screeching at constantly varying levels. this is with both grooveip and talkatone. i also tried uninstalling beats audio and rebooting but i read somewhere this wont change the drivers back to the originals and i still have the same condition. i just got the N7 about 3 weeks ago and the store where i bought it has a price guarantee so i am today planning to return it and get the N7 again but this time the 32g version. ( they got 2 left so i will be going ASAP. ) so almost all the work i put into setting this thing up is about to be wasted. still i am going to do it anyways. to me its just the point of getting the best i can with my available budget/resources and i can easily see this thing be full and kicking myself in the butt for not doing it. this time around i will test all of what i mentioned here BEFORE i root it. in fact i will only install the necessary apps ( grooveip/talkatone etc.. ) during testing. its a real pain in the butt but it is a MUST i have this thing working as a phone with BT asap. thanks for the input and i will report back later.
update: actually in a more quiet room i was able to hear myself on the BT headset but very very low and in the background behind the screeching. still will report back later with the new unit.
For some reason the Bluetooth headset profile on the n7 is totally broken. I tried MANY headsets and none of them work. It is either the drivers, the hardware or the kernel. I hope it fixable in the 3g version.

yep i am sitting here now with the 32g N7 and the first thing i did was try the BT unrooted and its the exact same thing screeching like mad can hear myself on the mic perfect from the other phone and can hear the other phone low in the background of the screeching on the N7 ugh
i have a temporary solution that should work till its sorted.... i need a new headset for my computer anyways so ill just make sure to grab one that is USB then when my OTG cable arrives i am pretty sure that should work. it will be corded but at least i can use the phone somewhat normally for free. ill let you know. now im off to rebuild the whole thing back to where i had it in the 16.

Bummer. Hopefully they fix it with 4.2 or with the 3G version.
It also seems that if you try to toggle speakerphone / BT headset in various voip apps the tablet will crash and restart.
I tried with GrooveIP, Talkatone and the build in phone app (After changing the framework-res.apk file).
I also noticed i had better luck getting the BT headset to fully (and randomly) work when doing outgoing calls. It never worked on incoming calls.
Any progress on this?
I've noticed the same problem and just returned a BT headset due to the problems in GrooveIP & Talkatone
As a side note I was able to get the BT headset to work as a MIC with the google voice commands by using the following..
- Soundabout
- Under BT settings set it to force mono BT mic
- Set audio to wired headset
Just as ref, I'm using my N7 in my car, so my setup may be a bit different.
But this worked, I was able to tell my N7 commands and it would read out the response over my car speakers.
Anyone had success with a USB mic? Curious if that will work.
I'm very interested in this thread too.
I have a 32GB nexus 7, rooted and unlocked. I have a Platronics M100 bluetooth earpiece. My goal is to be able to dictate to Evernote through the BT earpiece. It is pairing and under the connect settings it is showing up as "phone audio". But when I speak into it nothing is happening in Evernote. I also do not get media audio through the earpiece.
My Sony xperia Z accepts audio from bluetooth microphones, but only during a phone call.
When the call is terminated the paired bluetooth mic becomes inactive and the phones built in microphone takes over. I have tried many apps but none will accept audio from a BT mic.
I have tried a number of headsets and speakerphones and they all behave in the same way. Sound is not a problem as the BT speaker simply replaces the phones internal one when paired.
The xperia Z has a setting which claims to: " record audio through bluetooth headset if available", but this setting does nothing. I keep retrying the setting at every android update, to no avail. Currently at 4.2.2.
When I plug in a wired headset, the speaker and mic simply replace the ones in the phone. Why doesn't bluetooth behave in the same way?
This issue has been raised in many forums, in relation to many android devices, but never answered.
