I have a HD2 as my personal phone and a Bold 9000 as a work phone.
I must admit, I'm not personally a fan of the Bold, the OS seems to have been designed to mimic the iPhone's layout, but without the touch screen, its a bit of a chore navigating.
The Bold's battery life isn't anywhere near the previous BB I had, and I'm lucky to get a few days out of it (it sits in my office, just doing push-email in sleep mode, not used otherwise as its not got the same 'fluid feel' to it as the HD2), the HD2 gets hammered each and every day and I get a good 1.5 - 2 days out of it.
But, as World705 said, its pretty much down to personal preference from there.

Reliable in terms of switching on, or making calls/messaging/general operation?
Both work fine to be honest, I just prefer the HD2 as I find the navigation on BBs a bit of a chore.
The only thing that could be improved is the battery life on the HD2.
I've got a curve 8900 and a HD2.
I like the push messages from the BB. But I like the HD2 as an everyday use phone its so much better and much more smooth to use.
The BB OS is out dated, even the latest os5 is kinda boring, it does the trick but still. The app store on BB is slow and apps are expensive.
The HD2 is still awesome in my book, I just wish it had a better battery and push services (apart from just windows live email).
I love this community though, you can find alot of useful info and apps on this forum.

As I said, my BB barely lasts a few days and thats literally just sat on my desk with push mail. Not used.
The HD2 lasts a good 1.5 to 2 days without charge (the first couple of weeks my HD2 would last about a day, then performance improved to almost double) and I pretty much use it constantly for texting, email (3 x pop3 accounts checked every 15 mins) and online browsing.

Its been designed to be used with a finger. Why do you want a stylus?
What's With The Capitalisation Of Every Word? Lol
I'd say the main thing you've got to consider is the keyboard. I think it's a fair comment that a BB user trying to transition to a HD2 will struggle at first. Hell, I struggled coming from a Touch HD, but I got used to it and it was worth it. I now prefer the on-screen keyboard over a hardware one. But that's just me.

Yup I prefer HD2, the battery is my main concern with this phone but it last me for 1 day or almost 2 days if it has little use.
But the on-screen keyboard + something like Swype (it's great for me), you will never like hardware keyboards, imo.

I Use Swype On My TP2 And Im Not Really A Fan Of It. I Guess It Will Make More Of a Difference On A Wider Screen.
To be honest? My last phone was a Bold 9000 (still have it, running OS 5.0.0.411) and compared to a HTC HD2... not to compare. Here are some things that might help you.
Browser:
The HTC HD2 BLOWS AWAY the Bold 9000 (so probably the 9700 as well, not much difference). Seriously, I did a few 'test' on my own on the same network and... wel, the Bold takes about 4 to 5 times as long to load. And then it looks like crap as wel. This on the stock BB browser. But still, even if you use Opera, there is no beating the HD2.
Media:
First the good things. The Bold has much better Speakers. So playing music out load will be MUCH better on the Bold. Also, HTC Sense looks better, but the Media in general is much simpler and faster to access on the Bold. BUT, everything looks much better on the 4.3 inch screen, off course Further, the HD2 YouTube app is great. The Bold does not really have an app for YouTube.. Moving on.
Overall OS performance:
Things load up instant on the Bold (but you know that, BB OS is fast). But there is NO EYECANDY in the OS. So if you really go for function, that the Bold probably beats the HD2 by a little. But the HD2 also offers great eyecandy. But really, the Bold is very very stable.
Battery Life: About the same, all though I do much more with my HD2. So the HD2 is the winner, I think.
But really this choice is simple... Are you a serious person looking for a stable but performing phone? No YouTube and all that crap? Or are you the kind of person that likes eyecandy, YouTube in general etc..
Just answer yourself the question if you want YouTube on your phone. Yes = HD2, no = Bold 9700.
The hard keyboard is awesome though, so that is another plus for the Bold IF you wright a lot of messages.
Good luck.
Btw, I myself regret that I ever bought an BlackBerry. Way to boring OS for me. The only good things were BlackBerry Messenger and learning about BlackBerry in General, which will prevent me from buying another one in the future. Amazing devices, but just no fun. No apps (at least in the time I used it, App World was not available in many countries).. No good browser. This really is a messaging device.
Yeah I agree with XDA mark.
I think the phones both have their uses and it really depends what you need it for.
I had the BB first, I love the messaging on it but the browser was so crap and I like browsing and reading stuff on the web plus I couldnt view PDF files very well.
The HD2 is okay for messaging, it really only lacks push services for me just because of MSN and facebook but other than that it works okay for most people.
The battery life on the HD2 is rubbish. XDA mark is the first person that says its good. The blackberry for me lasts like 2 or 3 days with alot of usage.
I barely get through the day with my HD2. Its that great big screen.
Im going to buy a power monkey charger thing so that should sort that out.
Oh yeah if you want you could get both, as orange do a bb bolton for pay as you go. £5 I believe that's what Im going to do. Going to be annoying two phones though.
You got to really look at what you want to use the phone for really, you will get bored of the BB os really quickly which is what I found.
There is stylus for HD2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXVKyqDJC8s
and there is bigger battery for HD2 - http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/05/htc-hd2-extended-battery-gets-its-close-up-lower-price/

Hello fellas and ladies!
My brother got an iPhone a few weeks ago and of course I have been testing it and comparing it to my first love (universal), which is still up for sale if anyone is interested !!!
I would like to mention the following (based on my comparison with my Uni) and ask you a question!
Pros:
3G/wifi internet is faster on the iPhone
- On Uni I have tried with Opera 9.5 and IE
Games are so much more advanced and flawless especially with the accelerometer!
Battery with heavy use on the iPhone lasts a little over a day! The Uni lasts much less with heavy use!! The battery on the Uni is terrible...
Cons:
No SD slot
Battery is not easily accessible
I hate iTunes
practically no cracked/patched soft/games <----- Huge downfall!!
At the moment I can't think of much else.
I can't wait for Omni any longer, they've been promising it for over a year and nothing yet.
So my question is: Would you consider switching from the Uni to the iPhone, and why?

I have respectfully read and agreed with most points in that thread!
However! my main reason for getting the iPhone would be internet access and battery life. Yes! I said it! battery life! my Uni will not last 5 hours internet browsing + video + music + games + work (word, notepad, calc, txt, mail, camera and so on) And I don't want to get an extended battery as its bulky as it is.
As much as we all want to hate the iPhone (me included!), we can't deny its internet browsing speeds both on WiFi and 3G (which is at the moment my main interest) Also GPS, accelerometer (fun!) and the crisp LCD! + more of which I can't think of right now.
I also have a problem with my Uni losing signal quiet often, and I get complaints that I'm unreachable!!! and I have tried many ROMs and Radios to fix this.
I don't know if its the hype of the iPhone or my frustration with the Uni that I'm considering it.
I guess, I just want a phone that works and capable of browsing 3G speeds...
But I will miss all the necessities that PPC offers!
Why can't someone on this forum flash the iPhone with WM6.1???!!!! Now that would be sweet!
I don't know what to do, I'm in dire need of battery life + 3G speed + 3.5 LCD (and above) + compact and accelerometer lol
Any thoughts?
I had an Iphone and sold it....as a gadget is nice specially for its multimedia features, but as a convergence device falls short in many ways..I wouldn't even consider trade it back for my HtC tilt much less for the Uni.
Could you buy/check in your country Samsung i900 Omnia? Much more features than iPhone, everybody speaks very good about it, and in Italy even cheaper than iPhone.
If I had to choose between Omnia and iPhone no doubt for Omnia, but I still have my Universal and it still works so good (even better with all the ROMS here )

I completely agree with you and I'm not even thinking of it as a replacement of my beloved Uni no matter how many times my Uni losses signal. I've even considered carrying them both in my two pockets, and yes I am joking!! but the thought did cross my mind!
But wouldn't you confirm that the battery life is better, 3G/WiFi is faster, and undoubtedly we'll see some development as far as hacks and manipulations with the ROM... I'm really hoping that someone can flash it with WM6.1 now that would be an awesome phone!

We do have the i900 up here, but I don't want to downgrade to a smaller screen if anything I'd like a larger one. Aside from the screen size it's a very impressive phone!
I don't understand why manufacturers do this moronic.... THING!!!! its absolutely frustrating why would you compete (i900) with the iPhone which has a 3.5" lcd with a 3.2"!!!!???? if only i900 had a larger screen I wouldn't even turn my head in iPhone's direction....... uuuuhhhhggggghhhhhhh
Why not get a touch diamond or touch pro? I have gone from the XDA Exec (Universal) to the diamond and am happy.
The on screen keyboard is tricky at first but my diamond flies and gets over a day so far when using GPS / Wifi etc. I would have gone for the pro as I am very used to the unis keyboard but in the end I couldn't justify the £150+ on top of what I got my Diamond for to go with the Pro just for the keyboard, card slot and extra memory. Try one out you might be surpised how nice they are and what they offer

I wish it was that easy, but I can't seem to settle with a smaller screen size than the one I have now.. I simply can't.
I appreciate your recomendation but the screen size is stopping me from moving past this obsession with the iPhone! Also, the speed of the 3G/WiFi as I mentioned above is what pushing me to get the iPhone...
All the people I know who own an iPhone not only are they happy with it but with every passing day they enjoy it even more.
The iPhone is far from being a good phone for buisiness use. You have limitations with e-mails, you don't synchronise easily with Outlook, the contacts are not accessed as easily as on WM6 and that is a very important aspect, if you have many contacts in your list.
The iPhone will make you scroll much more through the list, which is time consuming.
I tried the browsing, but the lack of keyboard is frustrating. The browser might be quite good, but it is not THAT much better.
iTunes is too annoying for me - I don't want to synchronize my musics, I just want to copy my mp3 songs. I HATE iTunes and would NEVER buy an iPod unless they change that.
Then you get a completly locked device, no memory expansion, no SDK, no freeware,...
I know - there now is a free SDK, but it is limited (cannot access all funtions) and developers have to pay to publish it, which means there won't be freeware.
All in all, I would say, the iPhone looks good, is a nice gadget and suits a normal user fine.
I however like to have something more powerfull: great screen, keyboard, lots of software and emulators. Hell, on the Universal you can even run DOS!
Cheers,
vma

These are the reasons as to why I still haven't committed to an iPhone.
It would be very hard to go from a Uni to something so "LOCKED" and "ONE DIMENSIONAL" But I do need a fast internet browsing device and a better battery life without the bulk, and not to mention the ability to receive calls in a home's basement which my Uni is not capable of doing.
Perhaps I'll wait until the G1 comes out as orb3000 said but than again I've seen it and its hideous!
I don't know... I just need a phone that works with fast browsing abilities, but then again I'll miss all the things that the Uni and WM represent!!
Honestly try a touch pro or diamond for a few hours - get one and send it back if not happy? I think you will be surprised

ahhh...Not true, with the latest firmware you can search through your contacts like in WM6
[QOUTE]
The iPhone will make you scroll much more through the list, which is time consuming.[/QOUTE]
Again, this is not true; for alphabetically arranged stuff in a list you can use the Alphabet row on the Right hand side to quickly scroll, otherwise IMHO scrolling is a lot easier with the new Multi-touch vs taking out the stylus and using it to scroll.
[QOUTE] tried the browsing, but the lack of keyboard is frustrating. The browser might be quite good, but it is not THAT much better.[/QOUTE]
Again, safari is miles ahead of internet explorer, using NF or opera reduces the margin by a fair margin, but guess what, all the sites that have been "optimized" for the iphone really fit seamlessly with the entire UI, and that is what makes safari a joy to use. Actually if you have an iphone (or can beg, borrow or steal one) try going to web sites like google, yahoo, amazon, facebook and see the difference yourself
[QOUTE]iTunes is too annoying for me - I don't want to synchronize my musics, I just want to copy my mp3 songs. I HATE iTunes and would NEVER buy an iPod unless they change that.[/QOUTE]
with the new itunes and the 2.0.x firmware , you can drag and drop your music into your iphone.
if you don't want to sync your PIM to outlook, you can forgo itunes completely and use a "FREE" winamp plugin"
going a bit off topic i simply HATE active-sync.(i may be a bit biased here as i owned a palm pilot and simply loved the simplicity and stability of Hot-sync
[QOUTE]Then you get a completly locked device, no memory expansion, no SDK, no freeware,...[/QOUTE]
Again, when we got our devices (UNI in our case) did we not have to worry about CID unlock, SIM unlock ???
How is jailbreaking and unlocking the iphone any different than what we did??
As far as an memory expansion slot is concerned, HTC is coming out with more and more devices without expansion slot, so why just blame apple??
[QOUTE]I know - there now is a free SDK, but it is limited (cannot access all funtions) and developers have to pay to publish it, which means there won't be freeware.[/QOUTE]
1)Yes, the SDK is free but is limited
2)Search for open toolchain to know how to get complete access
3)since you don't use iphone/itunes you have NO CLUE about the amount of free ware available through itunes. And did i mention that most of the software on the installer app and CYDIA is FREE.
talking bout "limited access", did the CORE player guys ever get access to the nVidia graphic accelerator in some HTC's??
[QOUTE]All in all, I would say, the iPhone looks good, is a nice gadget and suits a normal user fine.[/QOUTE]
very true
[QOUTE]I however like to have something more powerfull: great screen, keyboard, lots of software and emulators. Hell, on the Universal you can even run DOS![/QOUTE]
1)Uni's screen is CRAP. on a mildly sunny day, at max brightness the screen is completely washed out and unreadable.Yes it does have a VGA screen but the color reproduction, contrast is really really bad.
the iphone's screen on the other hand is FANTASTIC. with the sun beating down hard, the thing is still very readable!!! not to mention the contrast, brightness and colour reproduction is very good.
BTW when will HTC realise that it is time to R.I.P for the 65k screens???
2)leaving the 3g stuff apart, the iphone is way more powerful than are UNI (which is to be expected as the UNI is almost 3 years old)
3)if you can run DOS on the UNI, i can run UNIX bash on the iphone
4)there are loads of free QUALITY softwares and emulators available for the iphone (free and paid)
P.S- i made the switch from my uni to the iphone last year in oct. and have not regretted the decision even once.
heck its been more than 3 months since i last charged my UNI

not a problem at all.
however bear in mind that your choice should be decided on what you intend to do with your phone.
if you REPLY to lot of emails/ need PUSH-email/edit documents / then stay away from the iphone.
if on the otherhand , you only read emails (or only occasionally reply) and want a good, simple and stable phone with excellent multimedia functions, go for the iphone.
on a side note, i felt that my UNI was never a good "phone", i always had problems with signal strength, people complained that my voice was to 'muffled' or choppy.
after switching over to the iphone, i have not experienced these problems, now it very well may be that my cell service provider has upgraded there equipment or installed a new tower in my vicinity, but i have reason to think otherwise
Never get rid of my Uni
Yes, I'll never get rid of it! It's a great device!
I laugh at those who carry around their laptops and cellphones. I have it in my pocket... Running WM, linux or Dos - trying to run Android, what would you want more...
hey guys just got my iPhone...
Would like to point out that so far I'm not impressed but I am loving the fast internet speeds. YouTube quality is absolutely horible; I am very disapointed with its quality very choppy but is still watchable.
I'm enjoying the fact that I can post using my phone, hoever entering text is very difficult and uncomfortable but I'm sure I can get used to it.
I will try to compare it to the Uni and report back

choppy video...
how fast is your internet speed???
Sorry I haven't been home enough to make a comparison to my Uni...
What I found out is that the streaming video quality of the iPhone is as much pixelsted as on any other device, so I take back what I said above.
The 3G speeds are well beyond what I expected and a significantly faster than on my Uni.
I am very pleased with it right now and I can't wait to jailbreak it. I wish we had a section for the iPhone on this forum...
I'm posting using the iPhone, and the texting i'm getting used to so no issues with that!
Overall very pleased!
P.S. I've yet to try out the games..
Firstly would like to say thanks to all those who've put the effort and hard work to produce the cooked ROMs, and the gold cards and HSPL.
I got my HD2 last week and was initially thrilled with it, unfortunately this phone is severely flawed and I just can't deal with it anymore.
The main gripes with it are SMS based, not particularly great when I hammer SMS 24/7.
- Device slows down when you have a lot of SMS
- SMS application very sluggish
- SMS application hangs
- Space button too close to show/hide keyboard
- Unresponsive keypresses at times
- Some messages don't send until you reboot device. SMS patch from HTC doesn't work.
- Have to press show/hide keyboard to see what you're typing if replying to a text/email.
Basically- this device is no good if you text a lot! A lot of issues with something as simple as SMS.
- Battery life sucks on it as well. No good!
- Camera/video camera sucks.
- Hard key metal wears away quickly.
- Doesn't actually fit in the protective sleeve it came with.
- Sense is still trying to polish the turd that is Windows Mobile.
- Delays when unlocking device.
- You receive a power adaptor with a USB connection and one USB cable. Very inconvenient if you want to connect the phone to your PC.
The best way to summerize this device is... it's a tragedy. It is the best feeling, best physical quality device I've ever seen or used, it feels rock solid, albeit the peeling of the buttons. Time and time again, however, it's the software that's let it down. Apart from HTC's messaging app, it's all down to Windows Mobile. HTC need to abandon WinMo, it's useless, always has been, it's slow, buggy, and crap. They'd done something remarkable and it was a waste before it even was finished. This had the potential to be the best phone on the market, but it's not. I went back to using my old BlackBerry 9000 and I felt relieved. I can blat out texts and emails far quicker than on the HTC. Which is a shame because of the features of the HD2, such as the WiFi router. I'll miss that. But first and foremost, I need to call and text and email. That is the priority. My HD2 didn't meet those needs properly.
Shame. I have a BlackBerry 9700 on it's way to me tommorow free from Vodafone UK. It will last me until the iPhone 4G comes out.

When people research what phone buy, they often look on forums. I'm just stating what I've experienced. My post was a lot helpful than yours.
Did you try any of the other software keyboards available?
I use Swype, and type almost as fast as I did on the hardware kb of my Touch Pro2.
SMS is annoying, but other than that I can't fault anything about this phone. Enjoy your Blackberry.

Haha, you think think the HD2 is crap because you cannot type texts/emails as quickly as you can with a device that is designed for texting/emails?
It might not meet your needs in that capacity, but a Blackberry cannot do half the things that the HD2 can, it's down to personal preference.
The last Blackberry I had (Curve) I decide to sell it after testing it for less than 30mins. Didn't want to send it back because O2 have me a super deal so was happy to keep the sim.
I know a BlackBerry can't do everything the HD2 can do. I prefer the HD2 in almost all respects. However when doing a fundemental task like SMS/email, EVERY phone should be great, not bad. I never expected the HD2 to be as good as the BlackBerry keyboard wise. However it's let itself right down. I know it's down to personal preference, I am merely stating my personal preference as everyone should share their experiences.
I'm not even a massive fan of the BlackBerry. It's just got the basics right before it goes further. Unfortunately the web browser is awful and the camera sucks, but it's useable as a phone.

No I never tried Swype, never heard of it until you mentioned it which is a shame. Agreed, apart from the SMS issues the phone is fantastic. Best browsing on any phone. I probably won't enjoy my BlackBerry a lot, it's missing a lot of features. But hey!

Glad you two aren't representative of the members on this board.
It's all down to personal preference, what suits one person doesn't always suit another.
i txt alot on my hd2 and its a little harder to use esp after my n97,but i think its just getting used to it,it helps taking the sensetivty down a bit on the touchscreen.
HTC HD2 Stiil stays on!
Try with a nokia 1110 or a Motorola 8700. On this forum you find everything you need to improve the fantastic power of this phone. You made a wrong choice! Sometimes appens!
As far as the battery my set up works for 3/4 days without charging. Easy to use, fast, smooth, elegant, classy, superpowered. Don't know what to ask for more... You need some time to find a feeling with the kayboard, after that...
Starfire,
Shame you could not live with the device; however if you found the basic functions it was designed for not working as well as you would expect then I can see why you went for another option.
I always think its a shame that new users to the winmobile platform don't realise how much work they have to put into their devices to get them to where they want to be. Winmobile "addicts" see this as a plus because of the flexibility you get to pretty well change anything you want, as opposed to being tied into a straight-jacket as with other devices.
I personally wish you well, hope the Blackberry delivers for you.
If you ever decide to come back to winmobile then DO research your device very carefully (XDA is not bad for picking up useful info provided you are good at separating the wheat from the chaff) before you buy.
All the best,
WB
Good bye and good riddance
Its pretty clear you had a faulty device and you should have gotten another one. Anyway, if you can't appreciate what WM offers than maybe it was the best solution to get rid of it. Find a phone that's suits you (of course not better, cuz the HD2 is the best ).

Why would I want those old phones... I'll be going for an iPhone as soon as my contract expires. I have a 2nd gen iPod touch and it works great. The keyboard is excellent and it's smooth. The HD2 isn't smooth compared to the 3GS.

good luck with what ever phone you try next
As you can see from my sig, I've been using HTC WM devices for a long time. I really like my TP2, but I feel like there is better out there. Over the past couple months, I tried a G1 (loved android, but thought the phone was too outdated) and a Nokia N97. (awesome phone, horrible OS) I've also tried Android on my Fuze, and now on the Tilt 2.
I've also always had a hard keyboard, and can't see my self using a soft one. I've tried typing on my GF's iphone (great phone, awesome for her, but I hate em)and I do ok, but its nothing like a hard keyboard.
I am only really looking at the milestone because of the keyboard, but its getting some pretty lame reviews, I'm sure its not near as good as my TP2.
One of my huge gripes with these phones has always been lag, and slowdown/freezing. So I'm really leaning towards the Nexus. I'm just worried about having no keyboard. Also, it looks like the Nexus can be (or will soon be able to) flashed with custom ROMS. (which is why I love WM, HTC, and XDA)
So I'm on the fence about switching to Android. And I'm 80% nexus and 20% Milestone. Opinions? Has anyone here gone to Android from WM? Are you happy? Regrets? Will I miss my keyboard? Will I be cool with Android?

Hey, I recently switched from my fuze running energyrom 6.5 to a Nexus One and have NO regrets at all. The phone does everything my Fuze did and more, both faster, smoother, and sexier. It really is an amazing device. Good luck with your choice!

Thanx for the reply... one question. What about the keyboard? The keyboard on the Fuze was pretty good, and now your typing on a screen. Was it an easy transition?
the milestone HW keyboard sucks from what i've heard. definatly go with the nexus one.
just went to my local Best Buy to checkout a Droid, but they dont have any Verizons phones there. My nearest Verizon dealer is over 20 miles away, dunno if I wanna go that far just to play with a Droid...
I recently switched from my WM devices to a Nexus One and it's been very exciting. The phone does everything, easy transition, faster cpu, smoother, endless customizing, and the virtual KB is cool (once u get use to it).
I went from a sidekick to winmo(MDA - custom roms) for a couple of years to my G1 when that came out, I am a hard keyboard fanatic. So the MyTouch I got I was sure I would hate, I have 2 lines and while I still used my G1 as my main line I started to get used to the soft keyboard. Then came my decision of Droid vs Nexus or wait, I thought about waiting to see when/if they would release a version of the Nexus One with keyboard but then I decided to just buy it and worse case if they come out with one then I'll just sell it and buy that I guess. But i dont really have any complaints, the soft keyboard is actually pretty decent in landscape mode you really get used to it after a bit. In my opinion the minor concern of the keyboard is far outweighed by its overall performance. If they came out with a keyboard version yes id sell this to buy that, i love hard keyboards. However I would rather stay with this than have the droid. I think the droids pretty cool, 2 of my friends have it and I really like it but after using this beast I cant imagine using anything slower.
Well so far it seems the general consensus is I would get used to the soft keyboard, so I'm kinda over my fear of that. Now all thats left is my fear of leaving WM behind.
Also I forgot to mention, I'm on AT&T, so if I ditch my Tilt 2 for the Nexus, 3G is out the window. BUT, in my area I only ever usually see speeds around 400-600kbps, and Edge speeds of 200ish kbps. So I really wouldn't be losing all that much. I lived with it before when I had the G1, and my euro TP2. I have no idea when the evil empire (apple) will let att get any android phones, and I don't wanna wait.
Also, another thing. Email. I have an email addy with my ISP that I don't want to get rid of. Can you setup an email account (other than gmail) and have it check every couple of minutes? (like with WM)
I have a Fuze(and the hermes and kaiser previously) running the latest energyrom as well and my Nexus One will be here tomorrow. I'll report back after I play with it a bit. I can already tell ya that I'm bummed about the lack of BT voice dialing but I'm hoping they add it in future updates. I assume it will take abit to get used to the OSK, I've always told myself I need a physical keyboard so here goes nothing.
I also will be starting with the phone on ATT for a few days before I switch to tmobile. I'm hoping the 3g issue gets resolved on tmobile.
PS I like the screen name

Another thing, I have a folder full of sound files I've made (in .mp3 form) that I use for things like my ringer, txt, e-mail, mms etc..
Is it possible to use .mp3's for notifications w/android?
a lot of ppl here went from a 500 mhz windows phone to a 1gz android phone so of course it will be worlds apart.
try winmo on a snapdragon phone (TG01, HTC HD2) and things become so much better. Well depends what's available where you are - in the UK we get a lot of the good phones 1st simply because we have a compatible network.
I of course think I'm somebody and use two phones - a TG01 and a G1 (soon will be a N1 owner). As to which one becomes my regular phone - likely be the android phone - while the TG01 will be relegated to my media player. There is still nothng out there that can compare to the media quality of a snapdragon WinMo phone - Coreplayer players divx/xvid , streams and plays more audio formats.
Android still lacks any decent video playback and still stuck in the .mp4/3gp world. (Yes I can't be bothered to convert my vid files - why should I?)
Of course I am waiting the day when there will be the all in one phone and checking out the highlights of CES 2010 3 phones stuck out (google these):
the new unnamed Samsung running android with exact same specs as the Nexus (and with possible divx/xvid playback!)
the new Lenovo phone - lePhone running android with attchable modular keyboard CPU unknown...
The new LG phone - which I think was snapdragon - with 4.5 inch screen? More a MID or tablet but pretty sweet...
Ok there was news that winmo7 is coming end of march too but no demos..maybe at the MWC next month..

Yup... Make folder on the root drive as follows
media -> audio -> alarms
media -> audio -> notifications
media -> audio -> ringtones
If you put any mp3 on these folders, it will be alarms/notifications/ringtones respectively.
Also, they won't show up in the Music players if they're in these folders.
I just finished my 24 hour testing of the Nexus One for my employer and figured I would give my 2 cents worth:
1. On screen keyboard: Great, especially when used in landscape. Portrait has a bit more room side to side than the G1, and it makes it easier, but I wouldn't go so far to say in protrait it is a night and day difference. Landscape truly is, and I had no problem typing long messages in landscape mode, and using portrait for quick stuff. A physical keyboard is still a better option, IMO as a keyboard lover, but the onscreen is executed very, very well.
2. Speed/Android 2.1: I have tested some of the 2.1 ports on my G1, and as nice as they are, they do not give justice at all too what 2.1 is on a Nexus One. Blanket statement, the phone is faster and 2.1 is a great advancement. A more astute observation that I wasn't expecting, websites load much, much, much faster on the Nexus One. I didn't do an actual stop watch test, but a realistic guess says sites load about twice as fast. I am on an EDGE network where I do most of my surfing when not using WiFi... when on WiFi it was more dramatic (I actually loaded 1 site faster on the Nexus One than on my computer)
3. Stability: I tried my absolute best to slow it down and make it unstable. Couldn't do it. At one point in time, I had 23 apps open, the browser had 3 windows, I had youtube running, music, and so forth. Of course, several of the apps had to "reload" the last point I was at, but with this phone "reloading" is pretty much instant. The longest it ever took was one of the web pages had to re-download the content. I found that the phone's cache held my normal use just fine without ever having to reload.
4. Fit/Finish/Style: The phone has a very solid feel too, despite being very light in weight. Fits well in the hand, comfortable being used as a phone, and I got a lot of comments on it when I was out and about testing the "wow" factor (I was asked to go to a busy restaurant/bar and see how many people asked me about it). And, as odd as this might sound, being right handed the back button being on the far left was not a big deal, and I actually liked it's placement a lot since when I used it in landscape mode it was much more comfortable hitting it, and I think this is what they had in mind when they designed in like that.
5. Battery Life: Damn! That is all you need to know, Damn! I tried, really, really hard to push this to the max and see how fast I could run it down. I had WiFi and GPS both going, music playing, and was surfing the web as quick as possible, messing around with google maps taking a look at new and interesting places, and gave up. I used 80% of the battery in those 24 hours, but I was trying my best, for a little above typical usage it only went down 20% from 9AM-5PM. My G1 is usually about 60% gone over that period.
6. Conclusion: I am someone that pretty much demands a physical keyboard for me to even think about buying a phone. I am getting a Nexus One as soon as they become available through the company I work for. My manager is a BB addict, and she said as soon as we get it she is switching as well. That is a huge statement, her daily phone is a BB 9700, she texts and writes most of her emails from her phone, and the Nexus One out performed her BB 9700. She was using the google voice service to write, but she said out of all the texts and emails she wrote using it she didn't have a single typo!

Your welcome! I will say, if you check out the Nexus One forum opinions differ on battery life, but those saying it isn't good enough or are having issues with it not lasting long enough seem to have something off IMO.
I would say, with my normal usage, I could get 2 days of use on a full battery. Doing power use to the max I would get a full day. The only way I see this phone not lasting an entire day is if you are surfing the web, playing music, and using GPS non-stop type thing.

Hi,
As the title says, just looking for some feedback from those who had a tp2 and moved to N1 - is there any major disadvantages of the N1 over the tp2 (omitting obvious keyboard)
I hear the speaker on the N1 is bad and the speaker on the TP2 is awesome, can anyone verify this?
I went from tp2 to n1. The keyboard and speaker are all I miss. The n1 is the much better phone and toy : )
I moved from TP2 to N1! I had a g1 before the tp2, and now getting back to android, I wonder why i ever left!
The speaker is the only thing i "miss" i didnt really you use it often though...
The N1 is soooo much better than the tp2
Former (mostly happy until the touch screen died) TP2 user here. I love the Nexus One. I miss the hardware keyboard, obviously, but swype makes up for it.
The unit is incredibly responsive, and now that we have sense ported on the N1 the Exchange integration is excellent.
Now I don't miss the TP2 at all. Especially since I love tinkering with the OS and Android is better than WM for that.

The speaker on the TP2 was the best of any phone I've heard or used. As a result the speaker on the N1 was a let down.
However, the phone itself is outstanding. The build quality is quite good and the SW keyboard isn't as hard to adjust to as I had expected (especially in landscape mode).
The only thing you haven't touched on that I would mention is that the TP2 (CDMA at least) had *outstanding* battery life. The N1 is no slouch when it comes to battery life in the smart phone arena, but I did see better battery life with the TP2.

i did t hat, but the clock looks really scrunched in. also the black background doesn't cover the whole clock + weather.
i went from a TP2 as well. the speaker was nice and i do miss that and the keyboard sometimes but other then that im happy with my switch. windows mobile was so boring and dull to me and going to android has been good so far with no intention to going back to the TP2 and WM for that matter. N1 is a really nice phone
well i just sold my TP2 and my N1 should be here in the morning but I can tell you one thing... I love android, and as a previous G1 owner, I missed being able to mess with the OS. WinMo was too intricate and seemed "junky" whereas android is just PNG and XML really...
Another Happy TP2 -> N1 customer here. Few points:
Speed - the N1 is VERY quick compared to the TP2 (stock TP2, running WM6.5/Sense 2.1). No lag, everything works instantly on the N1. Phone doesn't slow down after a few days uptime, there's no lag in SMS or MMS.
Keyboard - The major concern moving from TP2 was the lack of hardware keyboard. That was one of the major factors in my decision not to get the HD2. Hardware keyboard IS better for typing longer pieces of text (i.e a decent length email for example) but for the standard phone texts/mms/short mails/web browsing/IM the N1's keyboard is fine. Enabling haptic feedback and using in landscape mode makes it a doddle to use, rarely now have to go back and correct words etc. Yet to try non stock keyboards, these should aid the transition even more.
Look and Feel - The N1 is MUCH more attractive that the TP2, however I sometimes find the N1 a touch on the small side - that being said it's probably more due to being used to the larger TP2, the N1 is certainly easier to used 1 handed than the TP2 tho do sometimes feel like I'm going to drop it!
While HTC's sense was full of eye candy, with a couple of widgets and some time Android can look just as good (and that's before you consider the custom ROM's with sense etc available)
Android vs WiMo - Night and day here (and this is probably the biggest "love" for me at the moment). Everything is at your fingertips. It's so easy to take a pic and whack it on facebook, send it via MMS or email. Check google maps or browse the net. It's all there, and really quickly available. The app store is pretty acomplished too, easy access to a load of apps - something which (last time I checked) the MS stored was lacking in.
Moving from a non smartphone to the TP2 was a pretty big jump. Good net access on the move, easy access to email and other information. The jump from the TP2 to N1 was probably equally as big. All the previous information is available (only MUCH faster) + a whole load of new information, apps and ways to keep in contact with people.
Hope this helps
I also moved from a touch pro 2 to a nexus one (with an iphone 3gs in the middle meh not even worth mentioning lol) and yeah I have to agree with everyone else. The touch pro 2 is a great phone but nowhere near as awesome as the nexus one but I'll probably end up swapping my nexus for the touch pro 3 or whatever they decide to call it.
*sigh* dont you just hate it when something so cool and new becomes redundant and old like 6months later..
Bought Them Both at the Same Time
I actually bought both the phones at the same time, after my HD died (I killed it when I opened it up).
The TP2 like everyone says is a great phone. Though the GSM T-Mobile US version (that I had) had pathetic battery life (Compared to my Blackstone). But the TP2 can not hold a candle to the N1.
The only thing I miss from the TP2 is the EXCELLENT speaker, and the keyboard.
The N1 is sleeker, it's RIDICULOUSLY FAST! the display is superb. I can do about 10 things in the time it takes me to do one thing on the TP2. Combine that with Xralogic Remote Desktop Client, and Documents to Go Pro, and you have a WM replacement.
Trust me, I'm no Windows Mobile Hater, I'm actually an advocate of WM and I have been for the last 7 years, but the the N1 is just a superb phone. I've had the G1 and the Moto ClIQ, but I went back to WM but the N1 is awesome.
I am looking forward to owning a US T-Mobile branded HD2 though.
I hope you find this useful .
wow... seems to be that the general consensus here is loving the jump they made from the TP2 to the N1... honestly, if there had been a stable fully working haret build for XDAndroid on the TP2 i maybe would have been a little more hesitant. I loved the keyboard, and i loved the solid feel of the TP2. But i strapped on a hardcase with silicon lining on in and out and this phone feels great now. I have yet to root, and this is the longest I have held out on rooting/flashing a device. I am pretty sure that once someone figures out how to relock the bootloader (if at all possible) I would go ahead and root. But I also wanna use this phone stock for a few weeks just to test the waters and make sure no glitches/disfunctions happen. (dust under screen, nonresponsive touchscreen, just little things that i wouldnt be able to get fixed once the warranty is void)
