HD2 on Orange UK - HD2 General

My upgrade is due in just over a week and i was struggling to find a handset to go for (I currenty have the Touch HD) as i was under the impression HD2 wasn't available on Orange UK.
To my surprise about an hour ago, i done a search of some mobile sellers websites and most are offering the HD2 on an Orange contract and upgrade!
Handset is not on the Orange UK website tho.
If i get this beast on an upgrade i am going to be one happy chappy!

Im on orange, however I had the mobile from my insurance company... Tell you the truth (might be the area i am in / place of work) but the internet on Orange is really slow, a friend of mine who has T-mobile has faster speeds when loading internet pages / downloading.
I have ran numerous speed tests with full HSDPA signal and, its still slow.. I've contacted orange and apparently theres a cellphone mast down in my area, however my place of work is no where near my home.
If your happy with orange, dont let me ruin your deal! its a real nice phone to have.

If you get a handset from a supplier who also bundles the contract themselves, (i.e you dont get the phone direct from orange) chances are you will get an unlocked wwe rom too, and not have to wait for orange to release updates......which is nice.

I would probably flash with a cooked rom anyway. I'm running the latest EnergyRom on my Touch HD, but you can tell it struggles a bit compared to the lightning speed of the HD2.
Thing is also, i don't see the handset available on Orange website and i was in the ORange shop the other day and it wasn't in there either so not sure if they will have an official branded rom.
Will find out more in the coming days.

My last phone was from an online company a subsidary of carphone warehouse, they sold the phone with a seperate contract (free phone) and you are correct I did have an unlocked phone (Diamond 2). My contract for orange ends in November, I cant wait to switch networks.

I was due for an upgrade last month on Orange. The only place where you can get the HD2 as an upgrade is on mobiles.co.uk but you have to pay quite a bit for the handset (unless you're ok with a 24 month contract) so I ended up going on T-Mobile. Just transfer your number if you want to keep it.
Edit: All mobiles from this website are unlocked FYI.

I confirmed with Orange today that they will not be doing directly, but i called dial-a-phone and they said that i could get it free on upgrade and that was on 18 month contract. So i'll be calling them back next week. I called phones 4 u also but they didn't have it in stock at the mo so couldn't give me a price.
There's quite a few doing it on upgrade. Check out http://www.best-mobile-contracts.co.uk . Thats where i found out dial-a-phone are doing it.

Hey peeps
Have just registered on here and thought I'd make my first contribution to this thread....
I recieved my HD2 on Orange today from believe it or not...dialaphone! It was free on an 18month contract with 1200mins, unlimited txts and internet plus it came with a £10 discount every month from orange!!! What do you think? Was the best offer I could find
btw phone came unlocked

When I called them a month ago they said that they wouldn't offer that particular phone as an upgrade but rather on a new contract, which is why I went to mobiles.co.uk. I'm happy either way, the only thing I miss is Orange Wednesday but it's not like I was using it. Plus the T-Mobile data plan is actually unlimited unlike the Orange one.

Wizard Shortage

I've been looking in to getting hold of one of these and finally decided to take the plunge.
Unfortunately neither O2 or T-Mobile have any in stock on-line at the min.
Does anyone know why? Is it due to be replaced?
Theres a shortage of components apparently
You can get it from the vodafone business site - click www.vodafone.co.uk/business
You can buy from here even as an individual if you dont mind selecting a business price plan
Just wait a week or so, i guess the reason O2 are out is because they offer it for £49.99 with an online tariff £19 for 50 any network mins and 200 texts
Gotta love it
Are these locked to the O2 network? I've been waiting for more than 3 weeks on vodafone and there's still no signs of stock coming in.
as far as im aware O2 stopped locking their phones, as you have to pay for the year anyway.
I could be wrong though, i dont have another sim to test atm.
O2 Mini S Unlocked?
I can confirm they are unlocked. As is the universal.
from O2.
Regards
Chris
thanks. Anyone knows when the phones will be back in stock? I was told May 16 by Vodafone but its still not in. I'm wondering if I should move to O2 if they have it in.
there is never a shortage on EBAY =)

as above - vodafone business store online has (limited stock) them
No stock on vodafone or o2. No stock on vodafone business site as well. Apparently, they hold the same stock. Anyone with info on release dates for more handsets?
I was in a Cingular store yesterday and they had a bunch.
Does none think that the fact that the replacement for the wizard (hermes) is due out very soon and they are bound to be concentrating thier efforts and resources on producing that?
O2 UK Website isn't out of stock: http://shop.o2.co.uk/shop/o2uk/jsp/handsets/viewHandsetDetails.jsp?prodID=consumer:O2:XDAMini:GROUP
Ordered mine pretty recently and have had it for about two weeks now, really pleased with the price!! It came with the new rom on it and everything. Surely they must be loosing money on this...
£470 Phone (last time I checked)
£50 for phone + 12 lots of about £20 a month
= £290 !!! Then you can cancel the contract as the phone is yours!! Bargain
Or get it from T-Mobile - FREE MDA Vario (XDA Mini s) PLUS FREE unlimited GPRS 'web & walk' for about £20 a month
Personally, i would wait for the Vario II if i was buying again. But as people righly say, you could wait for something better forever.

Customer care on 191. Basically, I want to upgrade my current mobile and was offered a good deal on this model. When I accepted, the chap told me it was out of stock. The date keeps on being pushed back... last I heard it was 22 May and still its not in. I've been asking them to supply me one from my business site but the lady (who asked her manager) said it was out of stock and that they obtain their sources from the same stock list. ??? Whether its vodafone not wanting me to upgrade and playing games or not I don't know but my patiance is running out... I might go to O2 soon.

Where is this deal? I can't find it on the t-mobile website. It seems to be sold only with GPS copilot and the cheapest is £169 for the phone on a £20/month tariff for 18 months,

You have to phone thier direct sales line to get it without co-pilot. I don't know why its not on the web site.
I can get this on a new contract and its not upgrade? If so, I'll get it first thing tomorrow!
Just spoke to tmobile. They do the Vario for £40 on a £27/month relax20 + web and walk tariff. On a £20/month tariff, its £80. So still cheaper on O2...

Orange Exclusivity

Long time browser of this great forum but thought it about time I registered since I'm looking to get this phone in the new year. I'm new so be nice
Anyone know when Orange's exclusivity deal expires and this phone becomes available direct from other networks?
I would get the Touch HD now (mobiles.co.uk seems like they have the best deal on o2 - £35/m with 5 months half price) but I figured tariff prices would drop once Orange starts getting some competition from other networks.
So any idea when this is going to happen?
Thanks
Nobody knows?
by the time it expires, there probably will be the next iteration on some other network
They have the exclusive deal like O2 have with Apple with the IPhone. You could say the same about the IPhone. It has been 2 years since the introduction of the Iphone! Where is this on Orange!!! Either you buy and Iphone on O2 or a Touch HD on Orange or pay full price £649+ for the phone so you can use it on any network! Your choice!
i heard O2 will get it in the New Year......
From what I've read and understand, Orange only have exclusivity "until 2009".
Everywhere you read on websites it uses this phrase, e.g. here, here and here.
So what I was trying to find out is if anyone knew if this meant 1st Jan 2009 or could be Feb/March or even later. I'm willing to wait until Jan to see if better deals become available on other networks, but if it's any later than that I may as well just take the plunge now.

or IPhone on Orange in October.... then....Feb 2009... then replaced with HTC Touch HD in December 2008 instead! The above (quoted) are more costly (point 1) and are Asian ROM made phones (point 2) that have been sim unlocked (point 3) so that you can use any plan with them.
This is exactly the same with here:
an unlocked IPhone (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brand-iPhone-8GB-Unlocked-Mobile-Phone-Black/dp/B001DASZEE)
an unlocked Touch HD (http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Touch-T8282-Touchscreen-Professional/dp/B001LOOMY4)
where you can then choose any plan to go with it! What I am saying is the exclusivity contract for an unlocked phone is with Orange UK for HTC Touch HD and O2 UK for IPhone. In France the IPhone is exclusive on Orange!
Hawk
I got my Touch HD delivered yesterday - unlocked and HTC branded with free 8gb card - Vodafone contract £35 p/m - 200mins, 1000texts, unlimited internet - phone was free - from mobilephonesdirect
There are deals out there - just be prepared to spend a solid evening looking for them.
Orange say "Well into 2009". So that means definitely past the 5th of January. lol

T-Mobile...wtf?

So here's the deal...
I've been with T-Mobile from the beginning - from waaaaay back when they were Mercury 121.
If I was to ring up T-Mobile as a new customer, I can get the phone for free, on the same tariff that I have now.
However, as an existing customer, if I want to upgrade to a HD2 I have to pay £140!
I think I'm gonna give OFCOM a call...
Yeah... I've had this in the past too. When I checked via the web for an upgrade to the Diamond from a Vario II, they quoted about £190. A new customer would have paid about £40. I thought it was a mistake, so went into my local T-nob-ile shop, and the girl said "Nope, can't do it any cheaper than £190". She made several phone calls to people, the manager came down, but nope, no can do. I said "OK, cancel the contract and I'll take out a new one please".... and then she says "But you do realise you will lose your number Sir?" I just replyed with "I'll group text all my contacts my new number. And I can remember an 11 digit number thank you."
It is a shambles of a system - I'll go in with a print out from Mobiles Direct too this time.
And I will kick arse....
Could you not just order a new phone as a new customer, whilst letting you existing contract continue, then get a PAC code from you old contract and move it to your new one? Yu would only have a few days of overlap...?

Most of the networks will tell you that you can't go from contract to contract on the same network and keep the number. This is an absolute lie, and you could go down a lengthy legal process to prove it, but it's not worth it over a phone number.
The best way to do it is to get a PAYG SIM, transfer your existing number to that, and then get a new contract (as a new customer) and transfer the number from the PAYG SIM to the new contract.
It's a pain in the arse. It's yet ANOTHER way that the telecomms companies try to rape you into submission.
Rant over. That advice still stands though
I'm with T-mobile using Solo (£20pcm) and thought I could just cancel and get a HD.
I got my PAC as I wanted to keep my number and then I got a call and was told however that I would need to upgrade or give them the 30days notice and then come in as a new customer.
they then offered me a deal rather than waiting the 30 days cancelling and coming back.
I could Upgrade effective immediately with the phone for free on a deal 18 month contract with the normal rates as per site. (now paying £40pcm flext = £225pcm spend limit and free internet)
so its true you can get upgrade phone for free. even if you were paying as little as £20pcm
Well I've just checked online for my upgrade as I am now in my final month, and it dosen't give me the option to upgrade to the HD2 - the Compact 5 (Touch Diamond 2) is as far as I can go - and that's if I pay £214.26!!!
Time to ring and cancel I think.
Tw*ts.
As a T-mobile (UK) customer my self with HD2 on that contract what you have to do is tell them what they already know they have to match the contracts for new and exsisting users this is how i got mine when they were not even out on t-mob. This works and they know it just want to try get the £140 out of you if they can hope this helps
The HD2 has just shown up in my online upgrade.... it's mine for £340!!!!
LOL! LOL! PMSL!! Christ, I'd hate to work for Tmobile right now, 'cos someone is gonna get a bashing!
Sorry to dig this thread back up, but after ringing them and asking for my PAC (code), and saying £340 was just plain silly, thye did offer me the phone on the Combi20 with internet (total £25) for £130. I said I can go to mobilephonesdirect and have the phone on this contract for £93. I was put on hold for 5 minutes and they said they could do it for £100. So I accepted. Should be here before 1pm tomorrow.
Only downside is it's likely to be looked to a T-Mobile ROM - unless you're lucky to get an unbranded one...

You're likely to loose your warranty then. I just moved from 3 to Virgin after they gave me some crap upgrade deals. You can port your number no problem and its unlocked and unbranded so i'm quite happy. Plus Virgin uses t-mob's network so you'd get the same coverage.

iv never payed for a mobile phone and i never will. vodafone have tried it on a few times but after asking for my pac code they always gave in. iv now moved onto o2 as voda dont do 3g in my area (and their customer services is pathetic) and got my hd2 online for £30 a month, £7.50 internet bolt on and the handset for free.mind you, its a 2 year contract but i can live with that. it would break my heart to pay for a mobile.........
T-Mobile wouldn't move till I asked for my PAC
I got the HD2 for free with 600mins, unlimited net, lots of texts, for
£35 on 18 months on T-Mobile
I've had it for a month.
Plenty of different roms tried, etc.

I've tested this and I think Virgin only get limited bandwidth from T-mobile. Side-by-side tests using a HD2 with a Virgin sim, and a HD2 with a T-mobile sim showed Virgin to have less than a quarter of the download speed of T-mobile. Having said that, for every-day browsing from the mobile, the speed on Virgin is fine. But if you fancy high speed downloads, or streaming high quality video, than I don't think Virgin will perform as well as T-mobile per se or O2.
I was paying £40 pcm with three and expected a mammoth upgrade deal and got not even as much as a pound off the current advertised deals they have. One or two deals they offered were actually more. Anger isn't even the word... I wanted to kill someone! They had the cheek to tell me that with the new deal I would be making a huge saving on my old plan and that was the saving.

Could be but like you said, doesnt really matter for every-day browsing

Price @ T-Mobile! Really want to buy! Your opinion please...

Hey everyone, I hope this is useful for anyone else looking for the HD2 and are currently in a long term contract.
On T-mobile's tariff list, there is the HTC HD2 on a 18 month contract @ £13.50 (plus the phone cost of £195.73)
£13.50 x 18 = £243
£243 + £195.73 = £438.73
Currently that is cheaper than buying it SIM Free, and I can pay a good half of it, over 18 months. Does this sound good, or am I missing something here?
I am currently on a 24 month Orange Contract with a HTC Touch HD (Blackstone), it only started in January and it is my main contract with 800 Minutes, Internet, etc, etc, So i won't be using the T-Mobile SIM.
1. Is this worth doing? Or is it too much hassle and I am better of getting it SIM free?
2. Will the Phone from T-Mobile be Unlocked? (Apparently O2's HD2 are), if not, Can it be unlocked?
3. Will I enjoy this phone? I use a Touch HD, with a custom ROM, can't fault it, love the phone, love the keyboard, I am a long time WinMo user.
Thanks very much.
Any assistance will be much appreciated!
T-Mobile phones are nearly always locked and various reports here from people who've got one directly from T-Mobile have said that the HD2 from them is locked.
The ones supplied by O2 are also locked.
Both are very lightly branded by software. Externally there is no operator branding.
So you must factor in the price of unlocking the handset (around €22) as well as the fact that you'll have a HD2 with a CID of a branded phone.
I'm sure it's possible to buy one sim-free and unbranded from various places for around the same price of £460 (price of T-Mobile inc. contract + unlock fee), but I suppose the 'interest-free' way of doing it may appeal to you.
I've also heard that the o2 ones are locked but o2 will happily unlock it for you, they even have a link on their site for doing so apparently..
I really appreciate your comments, its been really helpful.
I will keep looking around for a HD2 SIM Free.
Any unlocking solutions? Like the one you have referred to as being 22 euros?
I had a look at o2's website, I can't seem to find the HD2 on their website, even then, they are not tariffs which look like they will be cheaper in the long run, oh well.
Thanks very much again.

The problem is no one has actually had their HD2 unlocked by O2 for free so far. There's been no report of it happening on this forum at all. Someone from here said that they rang O2 and they said that they would unlock, but they'd have to wait 28 days and pay £15. Until it's been verified by a member on here that O2 will unlock via that link (and maybe even for free) it's just hearsay.

I had this thought the other day about buying with a contract, if it was about the same price, as a way of cheap financing (no interest!). But, I am in the U.S. I'm thinking they would probably flag this somehow when the billing address shows up as being in the U.S.? ... What do y'all think?

I work for O2 and we had an internal announcement saying that they would unlock contract phones for free, although as everyone has been told it can take 28 days to receive the instructions. They should only be charging you £15 if you want to unlock a pay as you go phone. If you don't mind the wait then it's probably worth doing it through the link. That said it's a service they only launched a few weeks ago, so i wouldn't be surprised if there are a few issues initially.
Getting back on topic i'd say you would be better off getting it from T-Mobile rather than O2 if you are looking for the cheapest deal.
I Got mine from www.onestopphoneshop.co.uk It is sim unlocked and a choice of networks. Best of all they pick up the phone when you try to contact them! unlike mobiles.co.uk and mobile phone direct. I Dont like 18 month contracts as new phones are released to often. My 12 month contract with vodafone cost £540 total.

Generally O2 phones purchased on contract are unlocked from the off. The only exception to this was the iPhone (until recently anyway).
I know some people on the O2 Simplicity (sim only rolling contract) tarriff who managed to buy the HD2 'outright' but they came locked to O2. How does that work for unlocking purposes - will O2 still unlock for free? I mean it's entirely possible that they can leave almost immediately after obtaining the unlock code.
you're correct pretty much all o2 phones on contract are unlocked apart from the iphone and palm pre. Not sure about those who got the HD2 outright from O2, i'd assume they would still unlock it for free as these people have paid to get the phone outright.
Ah this has been most helpful!
I can't wait to order now, I am about to soon put my Touch HD on ebay, shove my Orange SIM card in an old 8310 lol until the T-mobile HD2 arrives! Can't wait!
Thanks a lot everyone for your input! I hope I can get it unlocked soon after it arrives too.

Unbranded HD2 from mobiles.co.uk or mobilephonesdirect.co.uk?

Hi,
I'm thinking of ordering this phone either from mobiles.co.uk or mobilephonesdirect.co.uk and I would like to know if people in the UK that have recently got their phones on UK contract through either of these companies have received unlocked and unbranded generic HTC phones with all the standard software and accessories.
Also if you believe that your phone is unbranded have you been able to use the serial number to download a ROM from the HTC website?
Now that O2 and T-Mobile are also supplying the phones directly I am worried that these vendors may start supplying branded units from the networks.
Thanks.
Unlocked, unbranded stock bought directly from HTC.
I bought a HD2 on contract from mobilephonesdirect (instore though) and it was unbranded and I was able to flash the ROM with the upgrade from the HTC website.
If you buy the phone direct from the network provider you will probably find that it is locked down and branded.
Just had mine delivered from mobilephonesdirect.co.uk, on t-mobile contract (ordered Monday pm delivered Wednesday)
Phone is unbranded. The serial number let me download the latest 1.48 ROM from HTC (already installed on the phone when it was delivered anyway).
Just put my old O2 sim card in. Connected straight away, so it's sim unlocked.
bought mine from mobiles.co.uk with a vodafone contract.
unbranded and unlocked, as are all their handsets!
amazon
I bought mine from inkino in london for 519 pounds at the beginning of Dec.
Today I bought another one for my friend and I asked for the price they said 539 pounds, so we end up buying from amazon.co.uk for 513pounds.
I bought mine on a t-mobile contract a few weeks ago from mobiles.co.uk
I haven't tried entering the serial for a rom upgrade yet (just gonna wait for 1.61) but as near as i can tell (is there a way to check for sure? like a code in the rom version?) it's unbranded/unlocked. Youtube app is still there, no branding anywhere in phone etc.

As i mentioned in the previous post, all handsets from mobiles.co.uk are sim free versions, that is why you got your sim card in a little white envelope instead of in the box with the phone.
I've just bought an O2 HD2 from the shops. The case itself is a stock HTC HD2, not branded. The software has an O2 splash screen and a few wallpapers, along with CoPilot trial.
So the case is fine, and a custom rom later down the line will make it look like a standard HD2.

Definitely good to know, since otherwise a sim free handset with a stock rom would cost a fortune.
You might want to take a look at the list of vendors/sellers in the wiki.
Right now Handtec are the cheapest (without a contract) in the UK with a price of UK£ 486.40 (€538)
Word of warning; not all handsets are unlocked/unbranded.
Look for the "Unlocked" green tick on product pages.
If you buy from Mobiles .co.uk and order through Quidco you get £50 cashback!! (£5 to join). Got my cashback into my Quidco account to be paid in January.....
I Looked at both of these company's but the lack of contact number on one and the fact the other never picked up the phone worried me.
I Ordered mine from The www.onestopphoneshop.co.uk. They picked up the call in a couple of rings, So i could check availability. It was then delivered the next day. They are part of the car phone warehouse, so hopefully any possible future problems should be resolved quickly. They are also offering 12 month contracts that i have not seen from the likes of vf,t-mob etc. My total contract price is less than the RRP of a sim free HD2. Great!!
Its Also unlocked
I eventually got my HD2 through mobilephonesdirect after about 2-3 months of phoning up, emails and complaints. The website form wouldnt work with my address and they refused to admit there was anything wrong or help with the problem. My flatmate is trying to order the same but still has had no luck. I only managed to get an order through with them when i managed to speak to the one decent guy in the call centre. I think his name was 'adam', he'd be worth asking for if you need to phone up. He took 10 mins out to process my order over the phone and completed it without a problem - the site form hadn't worked with the exact same information.
The staff promised many times to give me a call back to take a phone order but i never recieved one. Often they were rude or had an attitude.
I'd really advise anyone to avoid them, however they did have the best monthly deal (tmobile web n walk 30 package - 700 mins, unlimited texts, unlimited web [and the highest fair usage cap per month compared to vodafone's 500mb monthly usage]).
Another note: instore staff are far more polite than the people i've spoken to on the phone.
Dont order from mobilephonesdirect!!!
hi just trying to save you alot of hasle. do not order from mobilephonesdirect website. i ordered my phone from them it didnt arrive after a week so i cancled my order. about an hour after canceling i had an email saying that my order has been dispatched (AFTER I CANCLED) not only that all my emails where not answered correctly. i then had my second caclelation email answered by 1 that said i would not recieve my phone for another month at the time i had already recieved bills from o2 and they couldnt cancle my new contract as mobilephonesdirect had set it up and they refused to refund me my money till they got the phone(WHICH I TOLD THEM NOT TO SEND) back and i didnt even recieve that. had to get trading standards involved and i started a contract with tmobile but still no refund for the bills that i payed.
# oh yeah also when i ordered they advertised garanteed next day delivery and also said the phone was in stock... only after a week and atempting to cancle i found out that they didnt have it in stock at all.
My thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to my query.
