To all devs out there ,im been trying to root the hero for a week now ,ive tried every guide going also the gold card with 10 different sd cards with no luck.the rom what ive got is the release 2.73.405.66 rom.it has the new nboot is thats why i cant flash.is there any way i can wipe all date and software so i will have nothing on the phone and then install an earlier rom, its just an idea as im starting to lose it with this fone.i hope someone can help me or do i have to wait for the official update from htc
with this rom version you need to create a goldcard and downgrade your rom before you can install a custom rom. if you have problems with the goldcard you should be more specific.
waiting for the update doesn't seem like the best idea, because it might take some until a security flaw is found that allows to root the rom when already installed on the phone. if you have the custom recovery image you will be able to install the (pre-rooted) update short time after it was released.
You should be able to use fastboot for this issue.
Search around the forums, (also http://hero.modaco.com) and read about it.
All you need is the fasboot tool, a usb cable and the "debugging mode" switched on at ur phone...
everytime i create the gold card and try to downgrade the rom it states boot error 140.i follow the guides very indepth i get the serial number from the sdcard than i reverse the string and then replace the first two numbers or letters with 2 zeros how can you tell when the goldcard is on the sdcard.when i replace the sdcard back in sdcard reader it states that the folder is empty.im quite clued up on winmo but android is giving me a headache
wouldn't the fastboot give you the "remote: not allowed" error?
anyway, you can try:
start your phone by holding back and pushing power, you should see three skating androids. put recovery image in the folder where your fastboot.exe is, open terminal and go to that folder and type:
Code:
fastboot boot recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.3.1.img
if that works report back.
for the goldcard i can't help, never did it.
at last im rooted thanks for for the help .the way i did
(with the phone in normal mode)
1) Connect your Hero via usb to your pc/mac/...
2) Open Command Prompt ->
Put in the following text ->
C:\Users\Username> cd\
C:\>cd android\tools\
C:\>android\tools>adb push recovery-RA-Hero-v1.5.3.1.img /sdcard/recovery-RA-Hero-v1.5.3.1.img

Thanks!

Getting exactly the same. Tried the goldcard method numerous times using 3 different cards and always get the bootloader 140 error. Tried the above with same errors... very frustrating!
Mine is a UK T-Mobile G2 with build number 2.73.110.26, any suggestions gratefully tried!
Edit: Finally managed to sort it. I was using "RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_1.76.405.1_R3_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe" - this didnt work. Once I found and tried RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe it all clicked into place!
Thanks for all the info provided on these forums, cheers!

Hi
I have tried making a goldcard, and installed via. the RUU shown here.. 405.5 .. but then I tried using Flashrec to get another recovery image, it failed making the first step...
So is my phone rooted or did something go wrong ?
the phone is still unfortunately not rooted. I would've tried the fastboot method

just curious but did anyone just try to flash the older version without bothering with the goldcard...i dun know what i did to my htc hero orange but when i was researching i was told i needed to downgrade to root. I tried to take a long shot and used htc sync and old orange ruu..and somehow it just downgraded itself.... i know it might not help but its a long shot!

Very similar story. I did make a goldcard but hadn't got as far as finding out how to extract the update.zip out of the RUU exe, in order to use it. I tried running the RUU to see what would happen & my Hero downgraded.

You are not on RC29/RC7. The security flaw we exploit in order to root our phones has been fixed in every firmware update. Follow this guide for help:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
Thank you. I will take a look and get back to you.
Thank you so much. It really does mean a lot. I hate not having 2.1. Had it in the states on my Hero. Now I want it in Italy.
Still a problem...
Followed the directions.
I did a fresh format of FAT32.
Downloaded the Europe (since i bought the phone in Italy) and I Decided to download the US....You will see why later.
It goes through the following setup once i hit camera button and power and then action button to start update:
Parsing DREAIMG.nbh
1 -7 some info...yada yada
Do you want to start update?
Yes i do.
Then it says:
Update is in progress……
Reading images……
Then it says:
Update in progress….
Checking Signature…..
Comes back with:
Model ID incorrect!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
What is wrong? Thank you in advance for you help.
Did you use RC29 or RC7? Whichever you used, it's the wrong one for your reason, use the other.
I tried the RC7 first got the response posted.
Then I tried the RC29 and got the same response. So both of them are not working for me. Any thought? And I reformatted both times. Just to make sure. Thank you for your much appreciated help.
Ok, when you are flashing the DREAIMG.nbh deal first, right?
flashing....
correct. i format the card to fat32. then i move the europe version and rename it correctly because the nbh is wrong. and when i try to flash it goes throgh the steps to the point of installing and give the error message. any thoughts on model nubere? i posted most of the phone detail. whay else do i need? thank you.

fastboot...
The post says to put in fastboot and attach to your computer. Problem is that when I do this the computer does not recognize. So I go to the usb page to download and its an dead link. I tried finding the usb driver but not succesful. Any thoughts?
USB...
So i decided to use my Macbook pro and still nothing. It recognizes the device when its not in fastboot mode.
I typed in fastboot just like the directions said and nothing really happened. So i decided to try and to the recovery. Typed in fastboot boot recovery.img and it said cannot load image. Then i went into adb shell and put su just for the fun of it and it said access denied.
Any thoughts?

You are probably going to need a goldcard then. Check either the rogers threads or the magic threads for more info on how to do that.
gold card
Tried the gold card approach. When I put the phone in fastboot mode and attach it to my computer it is not recognized under adb devices. I have been looking for a good download link for the usb driver for that mode. I even tried it on my mac. Mac could only see it when the phone was in normal mode using adb devices. In fast boot its not recognizable. Any thoughts or links for the usb?
Hi guys!
I had root my htc hero a month ago then i tried few rom's to see how they are. My phone is locked for Orange UK. Everything was ok. Then i had updated the new ROM from htc website (via RUU file). The phone working fine, but now i can't go into recovery mode. If i reboot into recovery mode i have a white screen with a triangle and a phone sign. Pressing Home+Power again i have acces to 3 options:reboot system now, apply sdcard:update.zip, and wipe data/factory reset but only reboot working. Also i have an error on the same screen: E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
Trying to downgrade using an older version of RUU i got an error: on phone-Checking customer ID. Upgrade failed; on the computer: Customer ID error.
Everything else working fine.
What can i do?
Thank you.

Which RUU exactly?.... Please do not say the new 2.1?!
As long as it isn't the 2.1 update from a few days ago,... Just follow BTDAGs guide in my signature. You will probably need to downgrade using the goldcard method. But start at the top and you should be fine.
No, is not 2.1update. I want to update to the new 2.1 but can't do because of that issue.

On first method with flashrec i've got an error: Backup FAILED: Could not run command.
Second option can't use because i don't have full access to recovery mode
Last option (goldcard), i've got an error when use: cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid
saying: cat/sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid not found.
What else i can do? Please guys...

Have you set up the SDK correctly? ... Do you see anything when doing:
cd c:\android\tools\

Help Please
I have the same problem.
Tried everything, can't flash new recovery img using apk flasher, can't try the goldcard method cause I get "adb access denied" even though "adb devices" shows my phone. Tried using Droid Explorer to flash the new img or update but that didn't work too. Formatted my sd card a few times using the phone & my OS (when it was mounted and acted as disk on key). I also reinstalled the RUU that caused it a few time to see maybe I did something wrong but nothing (I too had a rooted phone and installed the 2.73 Orange UK root).
What else can I do? I feel like it has something to do with my SD card but I don't know how else to format it. Even on Droid Explorer it doesn't show me any of the folders that are in there when I'm connected (like tmp, rosiescrl, footprints).
Help
Tried to reinstall corect drivers for HTC but in device manager show 'drivers are up to date', so no change yet. Any other ideea?
tried to reinstall RUU file 2.73.61.66. Was working fine, then i tried RUU 2.73.405.5 . No chance. It said 'customer ID error'. Recovery mode still not working.
Help guys.
Well, of course it won't be working. Updating with official rom completely replaces everything on your phone including custom boot. And, of course, you won't be able to install .405.5 since it's lower version than your firmware. You have to downgrade to .405.5 using goldcard and then repeat the root and custom recovery install procedure.
Hi I've been reading these forums for ages but only just signed up, I'm looking to root my hero (surprise) and complete newb.
Basically current build/software is 3.32.405.1 so 2.1, followed the rooting instructions exactly, then rebooted holding home and power on buttons but it just boots straight into a red triangle with exclamation mark in the middle of it, I can hold power and volume up to get a small menu with apply sdcard: update but tried that after getting frustrated and that said that the file wasn't verified.
how do I get the normal recovery screen because already have a villainrom on the sdcard.
You need to do the root process to get to the care bear, then flash villainrom on the care bear, before rebooting.
That will get you sorted
Well I rooted using universal androot, then used the teminal to input the su (press enter)
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img (press enter) part of instructions but at no point do I see the care bear :S
I have the same problem as Ejen. The phone is root i have superuser permission i do titanium backup .I put RA-hero-v1.7.0.1 with Better Terminal Emulator. When I turn off phone and press Home&Power I get a picture phone with a triangle. Does anyone have an idea how to solve this?
Yes, this is because stock rom automatically reflashes recovery with the stock one each shutdown iirc.
You need to stop this happening, but I can't remember the command. When you have root using universal androot though, you can stop it happening.
Or maybe it's too early for me. Wait till I've had a coffee or two and I'll revisit this...
Perhaps you can edit /system/etc/install-recovery.sh. A quick look trough /system didn't find anything like a shutdown script so perhaps this file is run by the android environment.
I had this same issue the other night, been searching for a fix, hopefully one appears here soon, thanks Pulser_g2, i was hoping to install your 1.5 Rom

Ok,... So how far did you get on setting up adb http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/s...de-Setting-up-ADB-and-how-to-use-it.-(Windows) ?
I had done up to part 4 using ADB, opened up cmd prompt I couldn't seem to push stuff to the SD card and was unsure what I did wrong.

Type adb devices, and if you see your phone's serial number, then you don't need to worry about drivers. Remember to "cd" into the correct folder first.

I guess that is already on the phone RA-hero-v1.7.0.1 as you said stock rom automatically reflashes recovery. I suppose that the method VillainROM Roots 2.1contains RA-hero-v1.6.2.img. What will then happen with recovery if i try to do again root with VillainROM Roots 2.1?
When you try that method, you get the phone booted into patched recovery, at which point you take a nandroid backup and flash a custom ROM.
this prevents the recovery being lost. Just try it
I'm not at home and can not install ADB and run runindos.bat. I have on SD card recovery and FroydVillain 1.5. That's why I tried this method.Next week I'll be home and if someone does not fix the problem i will try the method you suggested me.
Can I try to put again recovery with Better Terminal Emulator, maybe recovery was corrupted ....

helloo!! i apologise if i am interupting or butting in whilst your in the middle of other solutions... i just saw the title and jump right in. i went through the exact same thing just 2 weeks ago!! unfortunately for me there was no successful forums or websites at the time... it sounded like a simple problem, with no simple solution.
this may not be what you where looking for, but its a very quick easy method that definately worth a try.
so... am i right in saying you have the official OTA HTC android 2.1 update?? and you now want to get this rooted?? and have you also tried rooting using the two common methods, the "one click root" and the "unrevoked" one? thats wat i did and i kept being stuck at the same red triangle and exclamation mark.
those methods (and countless others) will not work with the official htc hero android 2.1. (as far as i know) what you will need to do is downgrade the phones software. check htc's website and look for the older RUU and using the computer get your hero back to android 1.5. (under no circumstance should you upgrade your 1.5 android to the 2.1 android via HTC's OTA update... its only going the remove the root access!!!! - always reject it)
then continue to root as per the numerous rooting guides. done? now, obviously you will want to flash an android 2.1 rom. if you want to keep to htc's original 2.1, you can search for this in the forums under 'development'. or go ahead and flash the custom roms (villianrom).
thats exactly how i did it. im not entirely sure if this is the info you are after... but reply back and ill be happy to answer any query - big or small. (i should warn you, im no expert - but this forum is filled with the earths most powerful brains - u should have an answer in no time!!)
I have an HTC Hero. I ran the simple root method and got Carebare response.
I too have read numerous threads in the forum here and elsewhere but can't seem to get past the USB section.
adb says no device
I can use HTC Sync to sync data to the phone.
The SDK is installed and I have previously used it to capture screen shots of my device.
If I try to run one of the RUU executables, it fails with a [114: USB Error] (number may be wrong but the message is right.
I can mount the SD card and copy files to/from it.
I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on a Quad Core AMD CPU.
If I do the Home/Power thing, I get the same red triangle as described in the 1st message of this thread.
Fwiw, I have successfully and repeated loaded ROM's on my previous phone (HTC S621) so I am not a complete newb (but i am newb to Android).
What am I missing? This shouldn't be this hard (at least from what I've seen posted anyway)
I have spent over a week trying to root my HTC Legend (running 2.2 froyo HBOOT 1.01).
Ive tried a dozen guides everywhere but I cant seem to get past the downgrade process :/
I tried this guide here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894465) but i got "permission denied" when i tried to "adb reboot bootloader"
I get the cr--rw---- error when i try other guides.
Nothing seems to work.
Can anyone please write a simplified guide at one place for all this?
or tell me What really could be going wrong?
Use the "Hboot made easy guide" which is somewhere in this forum section. Very simple and I used the guide to root my legend after having fruitless tries with other guides.

The Legend just got added to the htc dev site so you should be able to unlock the bootloader now, might make things much easier for you.

Yes, with "HTC Super tool v3"
first of all download an application called visionary+
http://content.modaco.net/dropzone/c...ryplus.r13.apk
make sure that the usb debugging is turned on.
i hope you know how to create a gold card and that you have done it.
put the gold card in the phone.
then instead of running the crackin.bat file open it in word pad.
then temp root the phone using visionary+
type in each command one by one in the command prompt.
then when you reach the step where they show "adb shell" followed by commands.
then type
adb shell
then you will get a '$' symbol
then type su
then you will get a '#' symbol
then continue typing the commands without the 'adb shell'
after you type 'reboot' ignore the 'wait_for_device'
once the phone is back on temp root it again before you proceed.
finish the procedure this way.
Remember that you will get many error messages while you type each command. ignore the messages.
You wont get the full crwxrwxrwx. But what you get will be good enough.
now you can run the RUU
please reply if you have any doubts.
just try Unlock Bootloader http://htcdev.com/
yup... agree to the guy above..
unlock your boot loader than, flash CWM, after that. flash what ever rom you want as long as its for legend roms... ^^
hi guys,
i unlocked my device via htcdev its hboot version is now 1.02.000 and i flashed recovery_legend_5.0.2.8.img but i am not able to flash a new rom
after i booted in to recovery mode i chose flash zip from sd card option in the list it couldn't pass to next screen, options listed in the main menu goes off and i can see only cwm icon (a black hat over a yellow circle) i waited 2-3 minutes but nothing happened when i press power button it returns to main menu again.
Also other options listed in the cwm main menu not goes further, reboot system and power off, wipe data... either, same thing happens as described above.
i am waiting your suggestions
inside the cwm menu you have to make a selection by hitting the trackball (when you press the power-button, only the image you've descriped will appear)

Yeah I tried that one, and I got stuck everytime at step 7. He finds my LEGEIMG.zip, but when he wants to install that one he keeps saying:
Main version is older!

Do you want to reboot device?
I flashed the Eclipse ROM via safestrap and then restored the Eclipse ROM onto the stock ROM slot. For some stupid reason, instead of restoring the stock ROM slot before resetting the phone back to stock, I opted to use RSD Lite 6.1.4 and tried to flash the JB firmware (yes, I got into fastboot). When I tried to do this, the phone reboots past the Motorola M insignia, to the droid startup screen (with the flashing red light/circle), but does not get past the startup screen (yes, I gave it 30+ minutes to no avail). I also tried to reflash the JB firmware, but no matter what, I ended up stuck at the bootup screen.
For this reason, I tried to flash the ICS firmware instead (per instructions on XDA and other websites, I removed the lines in the XML file that had the word var, getvar, and oem). This did work! However, after RSD flashed the firmware, rather than restarting into the OS, the phone reboots into a black screen w/ the phrase "Fastboot Reason: Sticky bit factory_fastboot" at the very bottom. Anytime I try to restart the phone, it automatically boots into this screen. If I hold the volume up and down buttons, together w/ the power button, I am able to get back to the option to start normally.
When I tried to do the OTA JB update, the phone downloads the necessary files, but when the phone tries to reboot to install the OS update, it goes back into that black screen and does not install the update. Also, when I finally do get back into the OS, the phone then constantly reboots as if it were trying to install the OTA JB update.
Does anyone know what "Fastboot Reason: Sticky bit factory_fastboot" means? Also, if anyone knows how to "fix" this issue, I'd greatly appreciate it. If the fix requires command line work (like in this thread), I'd greatly appreciate if someone could walk me through it step-by-step, as I am not familiar w/ the command line process.
Thanks!
Edit 1: The next step I will try is to get root back on my phone, install Safestrap, and see whether I can flash a backup that I previously had.
Edit 2: In some threads for other Moto phones, there is some discussion regarding using ADB to fastboot/flash the stock ROM. Anyone know how this is different from using RSD? Also, can anyone walk me through HOW to ADB? I have zero knowledge in this regard.
Have you tried holding the buttons down to enter fast boot again and reflash? Worth a shot if you haven't. You could also attempt a factory reset from the boot menu. Maybe the corrupt file would correct itself.
You should definitely take the time to learn some ADB; at least a working understanding. It helps down the road.
Here's a good tutorial on ADB commands. http://mobile.tutsplus.com/tutorials/android/android-adb-quick-guide/
And to install ADB without Android SDK (app production software) http://mobilecon.info/install-adb-in-windows.html

Yes, I attempted to reflash on multiple occasions, both using the stock ICS and the stock JB roms. I must have reflashed close to 10x at this point. In any case, no matter how often I have reflahsed (including after doing a factory reset from within the OS as well as from within recovery), I still get the error. The good news is that I was successfully able to flash the JB ROM and have the phone OS actually start up, whereas, a few days ago, it would be stuck at the red circle/eye thing.
Furthermore, I attempted the command fastboot flash system [system.img], and I got the error:
(bootloader) Variable not supported!
target reported max download size of 31457280 bytes
error: cannot load '[system.img]': no error
I saved the system.img in both c:\android, as well as the internal SD card of the phone.
The other good news is that I am still able to use the phone if I get into the boot menu and ask the phone to boot normally. However, I am now unable to get root, and anytime I need to restart the phone, it gives me that error message.
I have also tried the command fastboot reboot bootloader but continue to get the same error message.
OK. Find a JB leak zip or current stock JB zip, access the screen where it asks for AP Fast boot and recovery, choose recovery, then volume up I believe when the phone shows the android with the red exclamation point.. Then choose update with zip. Search your SD card and install. It's worth a try in this manner in case you haven't already.
That's odd that your phone didn't respond well with RSD.

You need to use an updated fastboot binary for the new larger images in these devices.

Skippid, thanks for the suggestions. I tried your method as well. Went into recovery, selected to update from external SD (or something to that effect), selected the JB zip file, and let it flash that way. Unfortunately, I still received the same error message regarding the sticky bit factory_fastboot.

cellzealot, thank you for the link. I've downloaded the file that you linked to. Could you be so kind as to now give me a step-by-step on how to re-attempt the flashing process?
Quick update - I was able to get root back, installed safestrap, and flashed the nandroid that I had made back when I first flashed Eclipse. However, I am still having the same issue:
Whenever I restart the phone, I get the sticky bit factory_fastboot error. If I use the command fastboot continue, the phone boots up as normal; however, it would be great to not have to do this each and every time I reboot the phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
More updates (still not fixed):
After getting root, I reflashed my nandroid, factory reset (both within the OS and in recovery), and then tried flashing both the ICS and JB stock ROMs. I tried flashing both using mfastboot, as well RSD Lite. The files flash successfully; however, whenever I restart the phone, I continue to get the stick bit factory_fastboot error.
Also, when I get into recovery, I try to flash via "update from external SD". When I do so, recovery simply restarts without flashing the stock ROM.
Here's my last update as to this issue:
After trying all of the methods that I could think of (RSD Lite, flashing via fastboot and mfastboot, flashing from external), the problem did not correct itself.
I brought my phone into a Verizon store, where they told me that they had never seen that problem before. They agreed to replace my phone pursuant to the one-year warranty (I received my phone in December), which I received today. I've again rooted my phone, but have opted to not screw around w/ safestrap and custom ROMs this time around, as I find the stock JB experience to actually be quite good.
Found the soultion!!!!!!
Ok guys so after serching a while I found out similar moto phones have the same issue. I found in a latin forum and in a Droid forum people ponting to the same issue. So the solution that worked for my Razr HD xt925 was:
1) Enter fastboot mode in your phone (very easy since every time you restart the phone you end there anyways)
2) Write this command on the computer: fastboot oem fb_mode_clear
there will be a dialogue with the time take and OK
You are done!
Thought someone might find it useful
Thank you!

Thanks, but that didn't come up when I googled AP Fastboot: flash failed, and since I didn't get it from rooting or unlocking my phone I didn't think to look for that.

there are no stupid questions if you question its because you dont know something and would like to fulfill the empty space where a reasonable answer could go. and s thanks for the solution to this error.
Okay, I have a "stupid"/newbie question. I flashed an image and I am getting the sticky boot thing. How to a get to a window to type the lines in?
Thanks!
