Hi,
I use my HD2 and plug it directly into my usb port on my car stereo, and use it as a disk drive. The only thing is, is when I remove it and try to use the phone agiain, the HTC music player freezes up, and the programs that are stored on my storage card fail to open, as if it were still plugged in and using the Disk Drive option on the USB to PC setting.
If i go into the usb to PC setting and change to active sync before unplugging it everything works fine though.
Basicaly, I was just wondering if thre was like a safely remove hardware app, or something similar that I could put as a quick link to save having to go into the setttngs every time i disconnect.
Cheers
Ian
I dont think there is anything like 'safely remove hardware', but THIS will show you how to make a quicklink that pops up USB to PC screen on your phone with one click, so you can switch back to activesync much quicker.
(The example at the bottom is the one you want.)
The "safely remove hardware" option would have to be on the car radio, not on the HD2

Aye..... fair point!
the info in the link i initially pointed to was wrong, my mistake. The correct code for a USBtoPC link is
24#ctlpnl.exe mycpl.cpl,34
Sorry.

Thanks to all great developers from here, i've already saw a lot of amazing softwares and use some of them.
I was wondering if it's possible when we connect the phone to USB, the phone shows the normal popup asking if we want activesync or USB storage, but with another option that is "Charge battery".
It would be great because i use a lot of computers and i don't want it to sync neither to be a usb storage.
Thank you all..
PS: Sorry for my bad english

I second this, Im using a lot of different working PCs, also outside the country, so only charging without syncing, sharing internet or mass storage would be a great thing!!!
If you use a standard mini usb connector as opposed to the HTC one, it should only charge the phone. Works for me.

Even standard mini-usb leads use all the pins. You want a usb cable that only has the middle two pins, buy a cheap one, use a pencil or tweezers and pull out the outer pins and you'll have a power only cable, easy.

That's not an option for me because sometimes i want to charge and other times i want to use as usb storage.
And i also have a cradle and i'll NOT remove pins
I've already seen here a diferent popup with an option to use phone as modem, so i think this shouldn't be difficult.
Thank you
Just select internet connection sharing..
that way it won't sync..
Just turn it off!
An easy way to prevent the diamond from connecting to the pc but still charging it via usb cable is to just press the power button and put it to sleep.

Iam using that method ..
my method
i use bluetooth to sync and have disabled 'allow usb connections' in activesync so that it charges ONLY via cable.

That's another point, i don't want put it to sleep.
The perfect solution for me is an option to put it to charge, because i don't want to desiblr activesync because i use it on my computer, and don't want to put it to sleep, because i want to use it.
Thank you.
bumping because I second (er, third) this notion. I don't mind putting it to sleep, but I work in a flaky reception area so my damn phone is always waking up on its own. And everytime it does, guess what pops up? Yeah, annoying.
Who's the ninja that added that connect as modem feature? I have that installed and love it. Maybe if we all ask nice he/she will add a "Connect to Charge" option...

Yes, thank you for your input...
Now what we are looking for is an option to...
...don't sync...
...don't use Internal Storage as a disk drive...
...don't share internet connection...
...when connecting the device with a usb-cable to a PC.
We just want it to charge the battery, nothing else.
Because we don't want this to be permanent and we don't want to lose functionality by...
...switching off the device...
...disabling active sync on the pc...
...pulling pins from a cable...
...we are asking for a fourth option in the USB to PC menu.
And while we're at it:
I would like a shortcut to te USB to PC menu too, because I like to switch a lot. Anyone?

yea it would be great if someone can create a 4th option for us to be able to select "Charge Only" how perfect is that?
I'm not sure what you're really asking for, but i use an old small program called kill active sync. It still works for the latest activesyncs on XP. You can google for a few more versions. This will let you charge without having sync pop up annoyingly.
WM5
you could also enable this tool, so you PPC will be acknowledged as an USB Storage device. So you can USE all funktions except files form your storage card. It charges without sync.

I think you got the usb pinout wrong there, the inner two pins are the data and the outer two are the power supply.
It would also be sufficient to only remove one pin.
And the Idea of charge only would be very useful and is a good idea, I imagine it could also be accomplished from the PC side.
Funny Thread, isn't it?
People just don't read.....
I second the idea of rvdgeer because i'm used to charge my diamond via car radio usb port and have some trouble with this. I cannot put it to mass storage because i need access to it to get tomtom working.
So i regularly use the modem option.
But the only purpose of this thread is to find an answer if, or if not possible to add a 4th setting to usb connection popup which is "charge only"
Maybe the developers/chefs can answer this question or somebody has a serious idea how to get this function
Thx for all the other ideas, but the best would be a 4th popup option
Maybe it's different on the Diamond from the Touch Pro, but on the PC if you Right Click the ActiveSync icon in the tasks bar (next to the clock) select Connection Settings then uncheck the box labeled Allow USB Connections. It continues to charge the phone without using anything else.
Hi guys, this is my first post here and I want to ask you something.
* What is the proper way to disconnect the xperia from the computer, when it is connected with an USB cable to sync all the info?
Should I click somewhere or should I stop the device?
Please give me some advice?
If it's activesync, then you can just plug it out.
If it's just a normal usb connection, remember to click "Safely remove hardware" button (near the clock) on your computer and select your phone.
That is my point, i don't see the adv where it says that, it just appear the windows mobile icon, but not the one wich I use to disconnect the USB memories.
if it vista you need Windows Mobile Device Center
otherwise you need to be more clear if activesync react to
the device is being plug'd in
Yes, I have the Windows Mobile Device Center, but I can't find where to click to safely disconnect the usb cable.
I really appreciate your advice, thanks a lot.
So, you just use the regular USB connection (not activesync/wmdc)? And can't find the "safely remove hardware" button?
Look if the icon is hidden in the notification area, if not, try this command in Start -> Run: RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll
It does not appear as connected or anything else in that command you sent me, but in the Windows Mobile Center it appears as connecter with a green button.
is it safe to unplug the cable only? without click in the safely remove button?!
If you have it connected with WMDC (windows mobile device center), then yes, you can just unplug it.
The only time you need (not really, but better safe than sorry) to click on safely remove hardware, is if you have changed the settings on your phone to just work as a USB device and not connect with WMDC.
Hope that answers your question
Thanks Dogans, from now on i will only disconnect the usb cable from my phone without look for any button or something like that, now i am more confident with my new phone, anyway I want to know what other users do to disconnect their phones.
My phone and all my USB devices just get yanked out once I've finished. Never bother with the Safely Remove Hardware. Just make sure you haven't got any read/writes going on.

Assuming they have ActiveSync on their PC, right click the ActiveSync icon and go to "Connection Settings". Make sure "Allow USB Connections" is unticked.
That does the trick, and if you do want to use ActiveSync, just unplug the USB cable, tick that box, and plug it back in (it sometimes works without unplugging the cable first, but a lot of the time it just causes issues - it's safer to unplug it.)
If they don't have ActiveSync, then there's no problem. Just stop it trying to install software for the device when you plug it in.
Hope that helps

The only thing you can do is to set your phone as a USB drive, but that obviously means that your phone will lose the use of the storage card. That's not good if you've got software installed on it that you want to use.
Its done the same way mate but on you phone. go to the syn on your phone, then menu on bottom right then connections, and the same option is there, untick the box "synchronize all pc's using this connection and your away =]
thanks all for your kind help
Another method is to standby the HD2. Press the EndCall after you plug the USB cable, then it won't connect.

I plug my HD2 into the USB port and when ActiveSync comes up and sets up the new device, I just un-tick all the sync option boxes, so that technically the sync takes place by no data is transferred. I can still explore the HD2 and charge it, as well as installing software from my PC.
i use my laptop to charge my phone and i also do this at work, i realise i can just plug in the usb wall charger but ideally what i want is the ability to plug in the the usb into laptop / pc and get the
Choose a connection type
1) activesync
2) harddrive
3) internet sharing
4) just charge
any ideas?
Just select either activesync or disk drive, and then press the power button to turn it back off...
when the connection screen pops up just click activsync and check the little square box " Don't Ask Again" and it won't pop up anymore

i want to use the phone ... its the only thing that keeps me sane at work lol
You dont have to select an option. When the menu comes up 'activesync, hard drive, internet sharing', , , just press the home button and the menu goes away, the phone charges.
You could of course just choose activesync, it wont affect anything if there is no partnership set up on the laptop.
if i click dont ask again doesnt it just set my selection as the default selection?
if you press home it still does what was last selected (such as harddrive) my problem is i use it at work where it will freak out if harddrive is found or it activesync is attempted to connect

i work in a banking environment and amazingly they're not too happy about people with unauthorised phones lol, if u plug in my charger to the usb port it will either select it as harddrive in which case loads of nice messages appear and people are alerted (manager once plugged a usb drive into my pc forgetting that i didnt have the correct permissions and this happened) and if selected activesync the software (which is installed and i dont have permissions to stop it) would kick start and i expect cause similar results
on my old phone (ignito / diamond 2) i used an old usb cable i had that was damaged and data lines where broke and thus it just charged - i guess i could do that i just was wondering is a software tweak existed.
ahhhh gotcha. Wasn't thinking hard enough. heh.
Looks like your only option is taking the charger to work with you. (I have several 3 pin chargers that have no cable, just a USB slot made by Garmin that i have positioned around the house, and at work, , saves dragging the charger itself about, just need the cable.)
Just got my samsung focus and also just downloaded the zune software. Im having a problem getting the music to go to my phone.
I have ares music downloader where all my music is, my brother sent all his music to itunes, and i am sending the music from ares to zune. When he sends his music to itunes to his iphone it goes through pefectly fine.
When i send my music from ares to zune then to my phone it says Cant purchase due to a temporary service error. Please try again later. Why is it saying this, is it trying to make me purchase music i have already payed for again??
Ok I've been using a Zune since the first Zune 30 Gb came out so here's what you need to check.
1) Make sure your zune software is pointing to your music libraries by going into Settings/Software/Collection there you will be able to manage what Music, Video, Pictures, and Podcast libraries you want the software to see. Now the other thing you might want to look at is your phone's sync settings. I have everything set to "Items I choose" because I don't want everything syncing over. In settings select phone. There you can choose how and what to sync.
2) now to get music on your phone, if your libraries are correct all your music should show up in the collection tab which is located at the top with quickplay, marketplace, and social. Once there you can select and drag and drop the music you want on to your phone. The other way which I find easier, is to make a playlist of the music you like then drag and drop the playlist to your phone. Then the music will be synced over per what's on your playlist.
Hope this helps.
Well another thing is when i go to zune software its not even finding the phone anymore, its saying please connect device

It should start the zune software when you hook it up using usb, I don't do the wifi sync because I rather have it charging while syncing. If not you might have to un install and re install the zune software.

If it has to charge while using wifi then why use it, you need your computer anyways to sync it. lol
things to try:
Unlock your phone
If Screen Lock is enabled on your phone and this is the first time you have connected your phone to your computer, or if you are connecting your phone as a guest to a new computer, unlock your phone first. To do this, turn your phone on and then flick your finger upward on your phone's screen until you can see the keypad for entering your password. Then enter your password.
Name and update your phone
If this is the first time connecting your phone, you must first give it a name and check for updates after you are prompted. If you click Cancel you will have to disconnect and reconnect your phone.
Restart your computer
Disconnect your phone from your PC, restart your computer, and then reconnect your phone to your computer using the USB cable that came with your phone.
Restartyour phone
Press and hold the Power button for 5 seconds until the message "Goodbye!" appears. Press the Power button to turn the phone on again.
Note If the phone does not turn off normally, remove and then reinsert the battery.
Try another USB port
Connect your phone to a USB port on the back of your computer. Do not use a USB hub.
Note Be sure to use the USB cable that came with your phone.
Examine Windows Device Manager
Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
Click Device Manager.
Click the root computer icon at the top of the list and then click Scan for hardware changes under the Action menu. Windows Phone 7 should be listed under Portable Devices. If Windows Phone 7 was installed incorrectly, it may be listed with a yellow exclamation mark (!). Or, it may be listed under Other Devices as a USB device or an unknown device.
Double-click the phone icon and then click the Driver tab. The current version of the driver that is installed should be 4.7.965.0.
Update your driver
If Windows Device Manager indicates a device problem or if the driver version of Windows Phone 7 that is installed is not the current version, you must update the driver. To do this, follow these steps:
On the Driver tab, click Uninstall.
If it is displayed, click to select Delete the driver software for this device and then click OK.
Click the root computer icon, and then click Scan for hardware changes on the Action menu.
Open Portable Devices, double-click your Windows Phone 7, and then click the Driver tab.
Click Update Driver.
Click Browse my computer for driver software.
Click Browse, locate the Program Files/Zune/Drivers folder on your computer, and then click OK.
Click Next and if you are prompted, click Install.
After the driver installation is complete, click Close two times to exit the Device Manager. If you are prompted to do so, restart your computer.
If all that doesn't work, I would un-install and re-install the Zune software.
well i got it to work but i had to get the zune pass to do it. Just using the trial version right now.
Seems very silly though i already have all my music on my computer from ares downloader that i already pay for, i send the music to zune just fine. I think its trying to make me buy my music twice which is pretty dumb i must say

Because some people would prefer to not to have their phone attached to their computer. Perhaps someone wants to leave their phone with their keys and stuff so he/she can grab all of their stuff they need to leave their house at once.
Or, in my case, plugging my phone into the computer can lead to all of the USB devices plugged directly into my motherboard losing power. Yes, that's a very niche issue, but it's still a use-case that makes WiFi Sync useful.
That would mean your powersupply isn't giving the board enough power then, or go with a powered hub route. Don't know if it's me, but I notice the phone taking longer to charge when the wifi and bluetooth are on.
