Hi,
Is everyone here using Windows? The only thing keeping me from installing linux on my desktop is the phone.. Any tips or tricks for this? Want to synch / upload music to my phone from linux. If it helps im concidering Ubuntu 9.10.

Cintox,
I use Karmic Koala as my main OS. However I run WinXP as a virtual machine using Virtualbox and I an access my phone this way with no issues.
Must admit I have not tried flashing the phone via the virtual machine as yet. Not sure if this is possible as the USB link gets dropped by the virtual machine and control is handed back to the host OS, in this case Karmic, when the device goes offline.
For absolute safety why don't you just install XP on an old box you have lying around somewhere for those times when you need to flash via PC or need to run MTTY? You can flash via SD card, of course, but this raises its own issues if you have hard spl installed on the device.
Alternatively build a multiboot machine with, say, Karmic and XP sat side by side. For routine access to the device use the virtual machine, for flashing reboot using the Windows OS.
Hope this is helpful. Shout if you need more info.
Cheers
WB
Well, for flashing it sounds good, but for syncing, when all your stuff is on linux, not really fun to have a VM to do that everyday...
The solution here is to not use Linux.
Don't have a linux box to hand, but does linux recognise the hd2 if you set the usb-to-pc option as 'disk drive'. My car stereo recognises it and can read from it so maybe linux will do too. That way you may be able to sync stuff to your memory card.
Just a thought
i just use google services for sync, so that is no problem
On Karmic almost everything works!
- Storage Device - by default
- Internet Sharing - by default
- Active sync - using synce with evolution (not so hard to configure).
Ubuntu is the best !!!
Ive been using linux for about 2 yrs without any windows machine and its fine. The only thing i cant do is get hspl on my phoen so borrowed a mates windows laptop for 10mins. EVERYTHING else works fine, you can sync using one of various tools on linux (synce is pretty easy to get working). Music sync is easy with WM phones (although i personnaly prefer to drag and drop via usb onto the sd card).

i would like to use my xda2 as a regular wireless phone.
i thought it could be possible by putting an isdn-card into my pc and then connect to that pc via bluetooth.
however i have no idea how to do it or what software is needed.
could anyone help me with this please?
when the pda is connected to activesync over usb or bluetooth it have access to the same network as the pc
yes, i know, but i would like to know wich software i have to use to make it possible to use it as a regular phone.
Wait, let me get this straight:
You want to use your XDA2 and laptop to dial through the fixed phone line where XDA will act simply as wireless headset (like DECT phones)?
I don't think such software exists, the closest you can get is using Skype over WiFi or the PC internet connection (via ActiveSync).
Besides, can ISDN card even make voice calls? I think you need a good old fashion analog modem for that.
afaik there does exist a software for that for linux, but my pc is windows based.
and yes, isdn can make voise calls (search google for isdn cis).
for linux have a look at this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=8143&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=isdn
Asterisk (http://www.asterisk.org/) works. You'll have to set up a linux box to run it on though.
and exactly that is my problem.
i only have a windows pc that i could use for that.
cant you just dualboot ?
or boot of a cd into linux heck recall linux distro's
back in the day which could fit on a floppy
You could run linux on a secondary inexpensive low spec box. Don't be afraid of linux, it's worth giving it a try
im not afraid of linux, but i have two pcs, one htpc and one to work with.
and since i do not want to reboot one of these to be able to use my telephone, i just cant install linux.
and since im still going to school, i dont have that much money to afford another pc.
so does nobody know of a windows solution for this problem?
Hi Guys, Is anyone aware of a free program to transfer large files (say MP3 files) from my Macbook to WM6 phone (HTC Touch/Elf/P3450).
I have been successfully using SyncMate to connect to my HTC Touch and hence the USB connection works fine, so I believe that there should be a simple way to transfer files quickly to the storage card on my HTC. (I dont want to use Bluetooth as I need to transfer lots n lots of songs to my device..)
Thanks in advance for your expert views!
Cheers
SD Card reader is my suggestion.
So without buying a SD Card Reader Hardware, there is no other solution? Coz Macbook doesnt come with a (Micro) SD Card Reader..I was thinking that since SyncMate was able to connect to HTC via USB, there might be some other software or just some settings in Mac (or *nix) that need to be changed..
Just had a brain wave Since I already have boot camp installed on my Macbook, I just copied all the songs that I wanted to transfer onto my Windows Desktop from within Macbook. Next, just restarted my Mac in Windows and using ActiveSync and USB Cable, transferred the songs onto the storage device on my HTC!
I'm using Missing Sync on my Mac (around 35$). You can mount the SD card of the mobile phone on the desktop as a USB drive.
Hey, since we are on this topic.
I was thinking about getting a Macbook Pro, but don't want to give up my Touch Elfin P3452.
Will Mac OS X communicate with WM6 or ?
Yes it wud work , BUT u need to have EITHER Boot Camp installed on your Macbook (Boot Camp - used for booting into Windows) OR as suggested above, use Missing Sync..(I was unable to get Missing Sync trial edition working on my Macbook though..)
Alternatively other complicated approach could be to use some OS level commands..I had seen a blog somewhere which mentioned about using Unix Level commands to achieve the same..
Actually if you don't need to transfer big files (>5MB or so is quite tough), sync, or use huge speed you can use Bluetooth to transfer files and tether. As said before SyncMate for Mac is a nice free solution for syncing certain things. Missing Sync and PocketMac are full-fledged syncers you need to pay for.
Alternatively you can use Windows in BootCamp, VMWare or Parallels, but I really hate doing that because it's a bulky thing.
Good Morning to all,
Firstly hello to all on the forum, got my Touch HD at the weekend and have already found this forum very useful, especially in getting the favourtie people pictures to stop looking so crap.
I now have a problem I need to ask about. I have plugged my HD into my Vista 64bit machine and it picks up fine, lets me access the HD as if it was an external source. I then managed to set it up via activesync, not through choise just couldnt find anything else. Got it connected and syncing via bluetooth as well.
I have now come into work and plugged it into my work XP SP2 machine and it starts installing all the windows mobile stuff and then comes up with could not complete blah blah, when you click for more info its an unknown device.
Is this a driver issue, i.e. do I need to download one for my XP machine to recognise modern day tech?
Have got the number for HTC support but thought I would ask here first as I really like the way everyone manages to explain everything so clearly.
Thanks in advance
Jody
You should just have to install Active Sync 4.5 on your XP machine and off you go.
Appoligies if you did this, but you didn't mention above
If you still having problems, what's the full error text?
Ta
Dave
Activesync is installed, and has been uninstalled and re-installed just to make sure.
The message states that the USB device is not recognised by Windows and need to try re-installing it.
Thing is, it did just about manage a connection earlier ActiveSync showed connecting and then popped up and said unable to connect to device press ok to troubleshoot and ran some scans.

Had similar problems, but it was the Windows XP firewall blocking activecync
Thanks, but we stopped the windows firewall client when we were investigating this anyway.
Possible solution
Good day,
My XP didnt detect HD as well. Im using Active sync 4.5. To work around this, go to:
Settings>USB to PC>Enable faster data sync
Uncheck this option. This solved my problem.
Good luck. Cheers
Hello, have tried unticking that box as well.
I have uninstalled Activesync again, and reinstalled off of the CD. All installs ok, plug the device in for the first time and select activesync on the handset, it installs the pocketUSB Snc on the PC and then comes up your device could not be installed properly. Open device manager and the PocketUSB Sync shows with a yellow explanation mark on it saying that the device could not be started.
Have now also tried it on an XP SP3 VM Machine, it originally kicked up same windows error. Then ActiveSync on the VM and device showed connecting, then they both stopped and no further.
Problem fixed.... Useful hint for anyone reading this... dont use a different miniUSB cable, or make sure you certainly dont use a cheap one.... I borrowed someone's in the office who was sinking another HTC device and it worked first time.
Thanks to all your inputs

Hello there, just got myself a new job and this place uses macs.
I want to tranfer som files from my phone to my workstation. But the Mac wont reconize my phone. I dont want to sync it, just transfer-
Anyone who can help with a driver for the mac or a app for the phone to make this possible?
ok, so you want to use a usb cable that connects the HD2 with the Mac? then you want to transfer files? fair enough...
first, you need to tell us which OS you are using. the HD2 "runs it all" so it is sort of understood with most HD2 forum members to specify the OS when asking a question or requesting assistance. other forum members can't really guess which OS you are using now can they?
so if you are running WM6.5, a popup should appear on the phone screen as soon as you hook up both ends of the usb cable. on the popup, choose "disk mode" and the Mac should make the HD2's sd card available as a usb drive.
if you are using Android, i'm not sure but things might get a bit complicated. i'm saying this because i use Android on my HD2 and i use a windows 7 desktop. when connected via usb (in disk mode), my HD2's sd card appears under "Android Phone" on my desktop. this seems to indicate that the usb disk mode in Android MIGHT require some special drivers on the desktop's side...which might not be available for OSX (after all, evil Apple might not want to make such drivers available that allow one to work with a non-Apple product that comes from bitter rival Google). but if you are running Android, you are probably using MAGLDR, so you could try the usb disk mode built in to MAGLDR and see if the Mac likes it. i hear clockworkmod (CWM) also has some sort of usb disk mode option?!?
if all else fails, you can always use a card reader (my favorite method because it is FAST). i have only used a Mac with OSX once for about 30mins in my entire life. and i had my sd card plugged into a card reader plugged into the Mac the whole time...so i know THAT worked 100%.
Has anyone tried Lubuntu on the shift. Its the light version of Ubuntu for older computers. The readme says suitabel for computers no older than 10 years so I gave it a try.
It works and looks good quite fast very much like XP however the usually things dont work out of the 'box' touchscreen, SD card slot and wifi. If anyone has tried this and found a fix I would be gratefull for help. By the way i have used a wifi dongle in the usb port for now and that works ok.
The version I'm on is 14.10.
On one partition, I have Xubuntu 14.04, and I have some of the same problems you have--sd8686 wifi problems, especially (so like you I use a dongle). I think my sd card slot is broken, since I can't even get it to work in the stock Vista Business.
In Xubuntu, I did not have trouble with the touchscreen, which was OOTB.
Still, my go-to is Hardy 8.04.1 It's much kinder to the cpu, I can undervolt it, and pof's magical setup lets all the hardware come to life (except my sd card...). Yeah, it's ancient and no updating it, but Chrome 12 will work on it and sync bookmarks, etc with more current Chrome. I wouldn't do my banking on it, though
Hardy 8.04.1 also installs well on a usb drive, and I always like to have back-up Linux that can usb-boot, particularly on these old machines.
Jake
Thanks for that I will try Xubuntu and Ubuntu 8.04.01.
I might have a look at doing triple boot with XP, Lubuntu and Xubuntu if that is possible!
If you do use Hardy, make certain that you do not install a version higher than 8.04.1
This is b/c pof's magic http://pof.eslack.org/2008/04/14/linux-on-htc-shift/ only goes up to kernel version 2.6.24-19 (which is in 8.04.1). If you do choose to get that far, I can post the undervolting files for that kernel, which reduces fan use.

Once again thanks for the tip Jake I did in fact start to install the higher release.
I now have triple boot
1) XP Pro
2) Lubuntu
3) Ubuntu 8.04.1
My screen calibration is slighty out by about 3mm is there a way of calibrating the screen, haven't had time to try xinput_calibraton yet.

If you've installed pof's one-click setup, the go to terminal and run:
sudo TouchKit
On the second or third tab of the gui, there should be 25-point calibrator. If your pointer is off, you may have to use the tab key to get to it. But once the calibration starts, you'll be able to use your pointer.

I bought from these folks, a no-name thing. OOTB, though. Haven't had your wifi issues, but I use the internal wifi/Hardy almost 100% of the time.
Glad to hear you got the touch screen in order.
