Maybe this is not all too important, but I am very curious about the video quality this phone will record. One thing I have always sacrificed when buying htc (one of the first ones with qwerty, can't recall it's name, the tytn 2 and hero) is the picture and video quality. I am into htc and android for the android fun, not the multimedia, but this time I do not want to have a camera which shoots video and images poorer than a two year old Sony Ericsson or Nokia phone.
So, who is first one up to post, and how soon?
The Desire Z doesn't seem to be getting as much interest as the HD. I can find a video allegedly shot with the HD but nothing for the Z.
If this is anything to go by (and you have to assume that the HD would be the better quality of the two) I think we must resign ourselves to the fact that HTC are not at all hot in the camera / media department!
Shame ...

Wow! Why would you pay in excess of £450 for just a phone!? I know the Desire HD does more but if you use your iPod Touch 4g for all that it's essentially just a phone, right?

It is more to Qualcomm than to HTC, since the image quality depends largely on the image processing hardware of Qualcomm chip, and they are not so strong in that department (Samsung and iPhone are doing better there).

I am sure this is true to an extent but surely HTC could invest in better quality sensors and consider the likes of Carl Zeiss optics or similar? This would make a MASSIVE difference and would rely less heavily on post image processing algorithms to achieve passable picture quality.

Both the videos recorded from the HD and Z are only in 480p and that honestly does look poor.
I've seen some videos from the G2 in 720p that did look a lot sharper than this did.

true, but the g2 720p doesnt look no were near as good as to say galaxy s 720p also very blurry when moving the camera (from the videos ive seen from the g2)
does anyone know if this can be adjusted by software or is it just the hardware that is rubbish?
I actually just noticed the resolution my self. So stupid not to check the quality settings before starting to record.
i would love the desire z to have the quality audio/camera of galaxy s, im in two minds, buy this and put up with the rubbish audio quality/no so good camera or buy the galaxy s?
Have heard of people saying that the galaxy s isn't as good as htc, in terms of the senseui being really good... Also, do you want a hardware keyboard? Galaxy S doesn't have, and I know I wouldn't be able to live without the hardware keyboard...
Here is article on G2 camera:

BTW. If U looking for good camera quality go for iP4, Nokia or SE. HTC does ****ty plastic camera.
I did this one on BART in SF. I didn't move around or anything, just a quick video playing with the G2.

well no one really knows ... the iPhone 4 takes amazing pictures .... but as the HD isnt out and when the test shots where taken the HD wasnt on a final rom, its very hard to say.
Id go for the HD myself as the pictures will be very good no matter what (maybe not quite as good as the i4 maybe better), And the specs are soo much batter than the i4 (Bigger Screen, More RAM ect.)
And dont forget
Android > iOS

And you have the best of both ecosystems
But Android still rules, apple has its uses

Excellent post, thanks for the info. i was worried that my Note's camera wasn't as good as my Galaxy Epic Touch that I just sold. I've compared pics and thought that the note was note quite as good.
Great camera, initially thought that iPhone 4S camera was much better, guess not.
How is the iPhone camera and video? I had an iPhone 3g back in the day and haven't used #4. I haven't used the notes 1080 video yet either and need to check it out. My cousin has the iPhone 4 so I'll check it out myself. It just seems so tiny now

We have iPhone 4S and Note in the house...and really, Note canNOT match IPhone in general photo clarity. Also have SGS2 and they're virtually exactly the same....fact is SGS2 is better in lowlight conditions for some reason.

Well, that's pretty much what I took away from that article, so it seems your initial thoughts were correct.
I don't know what to say about that review. I've had an N8 for the past year and my Note has just replaced it - the Note is vastly superior in almost every way bar two, those being the lack of an fm transmitter and the camera. Video on the Note is better, the stock interface is a bit better (not that I found the stock N8s hard to use) but while photos are fine the N8 definitely takes better photos.
I don't know what that guy is on about, even my 70yo mother is able to adjust N8 settings with no difficulty if needs be, and I mostly shot on auto and it always gave fantastic results. Seems like any idiot can be a tech blogger these days.
What do you use an FM transmitter for? I use the app Tune In Radio PRO and get crystal clear radio stations from around the world.
The FM radio in Galaxy's are useless in my opinion.
Terrible sound
Don't want to be going off topic too much but it's an Fm transmitter, not simply a receiver. It means I could broadcast music/gps navigation/etc to the radio. I'm always changing vans/cars etc due to my work and almost none of them ever have bluetooth radio or usb in or anything, so fm-transmitter is the only way to get my music over. It's something so simple and cheap and yet nobody but Nokia seem to provide it in their phones.
Hanging an overpriced oversized external transmitter from the headphone socket isn't really practical, especially on my motorbike where I can tune in the fm receiver and listen to music and gps directions in my helmet.
Kid has the IPhone 4S. It's really a great device. St best OS in the industry.
But there's not another device in the industry I'd exchange my Note for...including Galaxy Nexus.

N8 has great imaging hardware but is screwed by the amount of compression nokia chose to use on the captured images.
Check out the image sizes with maximum image quality settings. The 12mp snaps are wayyy smaller in file size than even 8mp shots by most other modern phones including SGS2 and Note and iPhone 4s. Before N8, we didnt really have any camera phone with that ability and hence it gets praises, not to mention focus light which was first on mobile phone if i remember correctly. But frankly all this good stuff was spoiled from the beginning due to the compression choice by Nokia (probably done to speed up picture taking on relatively slower hardware).
iPhone 4s shots on the other hand look great on screen and on phone but usually are wayy off from natural colour and tones. Its still great improvement over iPhone 4 which was way too un-natural as far as colours and sharpness went.
SGS2 and Note are probably the best examples of phone cameras that capture images which are closest to reality.
Having used everything from 4s, Photon, Atrix, Atrix 2, Sensation XL, Focus, HD7, N8 (which I still own), SGS2 and Note this year itself, and having images from all cameras, I can safely say the 2 I would choose as the best all rounders are Note and SGS2.
Apple does some stuff automatically in post processing and saving the images which makes them look great and sharp, but under most lighting conditions it causes slight colour shift which does not look natural.
I had posted the comparison shots (full size images) in SGS2 section here on xda few months back. Will digg those up.
days of nokia are over my friend, its a new age - Samage (samsung Age)
Galaxy Note FM Radio
I have read several comments about FM radio in the Note being not so good. My Note gets around 50 or 60 fm stations with clarity as good as the FM in my Toyota Avalon car. How much more can you expect from a smartphone?

That's not the problem. 28fps is plenty enough for smooth motion. The video recording just sucks in general on HTC phones. Even the official "two girls walking into sunlight and then turning back to smile" video is jerky and not completely smooth. HTC is claiming they have OIS, but I don't see any evidence of it at all. In fact, disregarding jerkiness, the video just really really sucks. The colors are completely off and overly red and gaudy. The motion of objects in the video have a nauseatingly awkward movement to them. The details and colors are all smeared looking and cartoonified. It doesn't look natural or real at all. All these issues are evident in the HTC One X, Sensation, Desire HD, etc. They are not unique to the HTC One. I've been *****ing about how terrible HTC's video recording is for years now, and even now in 2013 it's still the same old crap.

I think its a problem of build because i had a Desire HD and when I installed the rom from sabsa prime, the latest, the câmera is working without loosing fps and on Endeavoru I just changed the build.prop configuration and the issue minimized. I'll be waiting the custom rom to see this fix.

Another video, same problem.

Those vids could be early software design.
On my epic 4g touch I get crappy video with AOSP and great video with the stock rom. My AOSP vids look like these vids being posted which is simply due to un-optimized codecs for the processor.
I'm sure this wont be the case with the final builds.
HTC is claiming that the UltraPixel camera on the HTC One will be able to capture 300 percent more light than competitors. You can shoot 1080p HD videos, HDR videos and there's a single LED flash for even better low-light shooting.
^ Is it comparable to sony xperia z 13mp cam ?

The Speria pics look worse than my E4GT.
I've been in the camera bix for years and one thing is for sure, if you pack more dots into a smaller area the dots are then smaller. Less surface area means less light hits it and therefor less color spectrum capture and less light band capture. The reason SLR cameras can hit the higher pixels is due to the CCD size. The CCD is WAY bigger in the SLR than any cell phone so it can capture more color spectrum and more light bands.
I for one think that the camera in the HTC One will really stun people when they actually use it next to their old phone.
I have the same problem
I hope HTC focuses on an update. It took forever to get anything when I have the evo 4g
Every video or picture I've seen from the HTC One (especially the videos) have looked average to flat out bad.. Really hope this is just due to insufficient software optimization and will be corrected before release as right now it's not looking too good.

I've heard this liine a I've heard this line a million times, for dozens of phones I've followed through the years. Either from delusional people, from fanboys, or just simply ignorant people who don't follow this stuff closely. Images taken from the demo unit that's trotted out to the press when it is announced will not magically grow wings and transform into something else on the final product, especially when there's only a few weeks til launch. Even going from alpha stages, with the final camera hardware is decided, the difference is marginal. You really think they have to start from the ground up building software for the camera for every single new smartphone? Like a puppy who is blind at birth and it's eyes open after a few weeks? It is not only ridiculous, but it has never been true. judge for yourselves
as much of a supporter I am of android... iphones tend to have amazing cameras. ill watch the video later when i get home but its hard to judge IQ from a video.
It's really hard to say without knowing how the camera was set up on each phone. (They were at different resolutions, so what else is different?) However, assuming everything but the resolution is the same (a big assumption), and judging from the side-by-side video, it seemed to me that the iPhone tended to oversaturate a bit. This worked well in lower light (or backlit) conditions, but once in a well lit condition, it looked washed out. Also, the white balance looked way off on the iPhone.
It just generally looked "off" enough that I'm highly suspecting that the camera settings were different. For example, the grain and flower pictures looked like a fill flash was used on the N6, but not with the iPhone.

It's you..... the new iphone 6 is the highest rated ever on a camera phone by dxomark. The sensor on the Nexus is still the crappy old 1/3" sensor. The iphone 6 has a 1/2.66 sensor. You can still get a good image on the nexus, but it's not the same. MP = nothing really ( since most camera phones are over 10mp anyway ). Sensor size and f stop mean everything... ( along with good software to run it all ).
Without some sort of reference, those images mean nothing really in the video. For instance the nexus images looked washed out. However, without being there to see the true colors, Its impossible to tell.
I hate iphones, but you have to give apple this one.

what did dxomark say about the nexus 6? i cant find anything about it.
i am just saying when the video first came up i thought to myself "that must be the iphone on the left" because to me the video on the left looked far superior.then the labels came up and the nexus was on the left. i was shocked.i know we all have personal preferences, i thought and still think, the nexus outperformed the apple product in these examples.
i am just happy that google took the camera seriously this time around.
maybe apple has a better camera ...i dont know ,but in this video i would have picked the nexus to be superior.
thanks

Your attitude is an example of why sometimes I hate the android community. You already assumed he's a fanboy and all that because he sided with an iPhone. He is stating facts, I have used the iPhones 1st gen to the 4s and after that android till today and its clear that one feature that iPhones are very strong at is the camera. Anyways, I am just glad the Nexus 6 has a comparable camera to higher tier phones, because I've used the GN, N4 and N5 and the camera on those were just crap. Can't wait to get my hands on the N6 and will be comparing it to my bros iPhone 6 Plus for a raw comparison.

Just because you're a fan of one, doesn't mean you have to pretend the other is absolute sh*t. Android is especially lacking on the camera software side.

I also didnt say it was bs or sh1t or anything else but i have seen note 4 cam beat iphone and from my point of view even g3 beats it in most situations ... iphones have their place in the market for kids that want to buy and be just like their friends and go along with everyone else and peoples parents who cant really understand how to work a android ....its just simple and its not for everyone .... that is the beauty of it ..i dont have to buy it because i dont want to ...just like all these people complaining about size and price of nexus 6 ... you don't have to buy it . I have had note 2 , 3, and 4 g2 and g3 wife has a iPhone 6 for work... i look at devices and check off boxes the ones that i can check off most i will get ....i won't even look at phones under 5.5 so that always narrows it down. Then i look at specs i have had many smart phones going back to treo 600 650 750 palm pre evo galaxy s2 s3 ...its wonderful to have your pick and not have to worry what others think .....
Actually I believe Note 4 was rated higher than iphone 6+. The colors were washed out on the 6+ in that video not the other way around. The problem here is that some people don't actually know much about photography and yet they still come on here and make random statements. MP means nothing anymore, but when you're down as low as 8mp in a phone it actually does. Usually poeple blow up photos more often taken with phones and this poses more issues when it is a low resolution. Face book, instagram and many other social media sites have created a place for people to post pictures and the need for editing. This blowing up of a photo to post as your profile picture or to crop someone else out leads to pixelated photos from iphones everywhere.
