Stock Gallery app horrible compression - Nexus One General

The stock gallery app on the Nexus One is HORRIBLE. Flashy, shiny, touchy, yes. But all of my photos are incredibly compressed and zooming in results in a massive JPG compression artifact fest.
I wrote a bunch of notes on a whiteboard and my friend with a Droid and I both took photos of it to keep a record with our phones, but to my horror, the notes were COMPLETELY unreadable on my phone: all of the detail was gone, even though the camera preview after I took the shot looked fine zoomed in.
The Droid does not have this problem in its gallery app.
I found another Gallery app meant for the Droid on the market and it does not have this issue. The photos I took were fine, it was the gallery app loading a piss poor quality version of the photo.
Does Google know their gallery app sucks? Do they just not care? It makes it seem like the Nexus One takes godawful pictures when really the pictures are just fine!

Yep.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6021

This also extends to setting wallpapers from the gallery app, which explains why every wallpaper from my camera looks like ass.
If you set wallpapers using "wallpaper set and save" from the market, your wallpapers are WAY, WAY higher quality.
So I guess my question is, how do we make sure Google knows about this bug?

The Nexus One's Dirty Display Secret

Here's an interesting article on the N1's display. Found it rather surprising!
http://gizmodo.com/5477320/the-nexus-ones-dirty-display-secret
yeah, eh... im not too worried about that. i think the N1 screen looks great and i never noticed any problems like that so i don t really mind
what a fake, if you look at that article with the nexus one, you can see the iphone photo perfectly
I would agree. Granted, they do show in those examples (if true) that the iPhone has the edge on number of colours, but I've not yet notices that, so I'm not going to worry

Ha ha, really? Someone make the image as an 800x480 jpg and we can test ourselves
well

Here you go, try for yourself. I have to say the pic looks better on my old 2g iphone
noticed this when i transfered some files from my canon g11, flash pictures against a white wall gave just the bad result as the nasa-picture in the gizmodo article... too bad really, but doesn't mean too much in daily use for me
The photo of Mars sunset is a total red herring.
The issue is the gallery app, NOT the display.
Google Mars "sunset", open an image, and you'll see no banding. Save the image then view it in the gallery app, and the banding will suddenly appear.
yeah indeed
looks like the gallary is doing some kind of bad compression on the picture

when I went to the mars sunset link in this thread, via the browser, there was tons of banding, so I don't see how it's a gallery issue.

I can't see much banding at all in the browser, this pic is the one I used for reference., certainly not what was shown on the Gizmodo site.
Saving it then viewing it in the gallery was a whole other kettle of fish, and THAT is what I'd equate to the image on Gizmodo.

try http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/154221main_20060807_PIA07997_060802183716.jpg and let me know if you get banding
(deleted) .
I loaded the image in my browser on CM5 and there's a million bands. However, if you scroll around the picture, while you're scrolling it's beautiful. Only when the image isn't moving or zooming do the bands appear for me.
It looks like a bug more than anything else.
Okay, so I've just tried the one posted earlier in the thread, and yes there is banding, a lot of it, however if I touch the screen for a second it goes away and "drag" the screen down or up, then comes back when I remove my finger from the screen.
I still think this is software related, the image is so damn large that it must be being scaled down to be viewable, and maybe there's a compression issue there.

I did too.. UNTIL..I put my finger on it like I was going to scroll it around or pinch to zoom...then the banding went away. So, the problem is NOT the display but the software.

True, but try to move the picture, or just touch the screen
When I use the image from post #6, I see the banding. If I use this image:
http://photos.upi.com/slideshow/lbox/7fc13f2a01438c144c13596ef3adaca2/MARS-ROVER.jpg
Which is at 800x616 pixels, I don't see the banding. That tells me its the scaling algorithm in the OS, app or GL library thats causing the stepped gradient, not the AMOLED display itself.

this is more along the lines of what I was thinking. I thought maybe since the picture was being scaled down so much it was causing the banding. I love my N1 and the display is so nice that I can't even look at my G1 the same anymore.

Epic gallery app sucks!

For some reason, google or samsung felt that we shouldn't be able to see the full quality of our picks in the stock gallery app. I was wondering this for my self because my pictures kept appearing blurry on my phone but not n my pc.
I suggest everyne download large image viewer from the market, it allows you to see your pictures in full resolution instead of the blurry mess that the gallery offers. I hope this issue gets handled though, this phone is way too powerful to be forced into lower quality image viewing!

I've always hated the blurriness on the stock gallery app too. It was the same on the EVO. The difference with this image viewer app is night and day. I love it Thanks!
I love this gallery for it's functionality, but damn, you are right. It just kills the quality the second you start zooming in.
Large Image Viewer does a nice job, just wish you didn't have to tap left and right arrows to goto the next picture.

Vignette Camera Conclusion

Hmmm...I purchased this app a little while ago and switched back to my default camera...today I decided to go back to Vignette and do some photo tests against the default camera.
Both apps are on the same settings, or as close as I could make them. Clearly to my surprise the Vignette app actually takes sharper pics than the X10 camera.
Attached is a photo sample to show the difference...im my eyes its actually a pretty big difference.

i went in the same way i was using vignette but i guess it was some stupid version .. with no available options ... and returned to stock camera ... but now i`m using one of the latest versions and OMG the difference is so big ... i just deleted stock camera app from my screen never gonna use it again ! )
I'm usually a really cynical poster and I don't mean to be a ****, but that's been one of the most popular topics on the forum. It's definitely true though, I don't use the original camera app much.
The only thing I don't like about Vignette is that you can't adjust the contrast on the fly like in the native camera app. I don't like the interface as much either. The X10's interface is pretty good, it just lacks the ability to keep the light enabled by default, to view pictures fullscreen and without Mediascape and a few other very minor tweaks. For once SEMC actually did something correct with the minimalistic and straight forward camera interface.

I think you may have used the free version...which doesn't support the full resolution of your phone. But I took a few different pictures comparing, I only posted that one comparision, but yeah vignette came out better everytime alot more crisp anyways.

Maybe 2.1 will improve the default camera app, but from what Ive read its only giving us 720p and nothing else. I actually like the interface on vignette, I also like the interface on the default camera. But when it really comes down to it, its all about what app will take the clearer more crisp picture right? and that goes to Vignette hands down. There may be a bunch of posts about this already, but really Ill admit, im way to lazy to search today...sorry

I'm positive that even SEMC will update the interface to include some of the important features. It's sad that we have to pay for a third party app to do the most minimalistic tasks, and that's to just take a proper picture. Nothing advanced even!...

I was watching a video on youtube of the droid x camera and features....I wish SE would give us something like that. Pretty slick interface and options....really no need for 3rd party apps. However I do have PicSay Pro...so that gives me everything my heart desires lol.

I returned to the stock app because vignette is so damn slow and I could not find a way to just take a picture and have it save without having to push 50 buttons.
I won't deny the quality is far superior, but like I said its just stop slow.

That's the stupidest thing you could've done. You've probably broken every application on your phone that uses the camera to add a picture to a message/fb/twitter, ect.
Also, you've lost the ability to easily take video.
Does anyone think before they delete apps?
Well I've noticed that night(or atleast low light) shots are pretty much the same with either app... they both suck
I use Vignette for everything else though...wish it had a better UI

exactly what i did
I tried using Vignette, but I found that it seemed to crop some of the picture automatically? Like, I know there's something like that in the settings, but besides that, what I see on the screen before I take the picture isn't the same as what's captured. Also, I found it really difficult with macro shots, especially with the autoflash. While focussing, the light comes on, but then the light goes off after focus, so then the camera refocuses, and when the picture is taken, the flash comes on but the camera focussed for without light, so you get over exposure or out of focus. Am I using the app wrong? I'm really finding it difficult to focus and get clear pictures, with vignette or stock app

and about those 2 pictures with the sunglasses m8... there maybe is not difference in close up pictures coz macro is working fine but try to take pictures from distance and youll see the difference anyway i`m using steady shot for best preformance 8mpx superfine and 16:9 widescreen something u dont have at stock app 8pmx only 4:3 ... sooo there u go aaaa and another thing with vignette u can take picture with a real FLASH ... not with LED light

Gallery 3D Quality fuzzy...

I am currently using 3 Gallery apps on the DHD; HTC Stock, Floating Image, and Gallery 3D.
Over all i think i prefer gallery 3D but it has some issues, when zooming in with Gallery 3D the image is a lot fuzzier than the HTC app.
It seems to be Version 1.1.3...
Is there anything that can be done?
There seems to be a distinct lack of options when it comes to the app.
I noticed this too and rated it low and left a comment...
I guess the dev isn't bothered at this point
Dev? I thought google was the dev, oops :/
Did it not come with the nexus one as stock?
Edit:
You rated it low? It is still awesome, id give it 4* with one deducted for lack of configuration options and fuzzy zoom...
I forget, I think I gave it 2 or 3. The fact you can't zoom in on an image seems a pretty massive drawback on an image app...
Yeah, I thought it was Google, but you'll see it in the Markets so...?
The description of the market app says its a 3rd party port if i remember correctly
Having said that, that means theres some source floating around, i'll have a look and see what the problem is, should be a fairly simple fix...
Would be very interested if you did. Be sure to let me know here if you do!
Hey I was also wondering how that app went on the dhd... i had it on hero but was slower then a sumo wrestler rock climbing!
but don't Cooliris make the app?
http://www.cooliris.com/mobile/nexus-one/
It is buttery smooth, no lag whatsoever
I installed Gallery 3D from Market couple hours ago because HTC own gallery app doesn't show pics from Picasa web albums and for me its superfast. And pictures are sharp and I can zoom in and out.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
To clarify, everything works great, you CAN zoom in, but it does re-render the images.
If you zoom in on the Sense Gallery app, it will re-draw it showing the finest possible detail.
Zoom in on Gallary 3D and it doesn't redraw it Looks fuzzy when you zoom right in.

Stock photo viewer killing image details

So yesterday I email myself a few pics of my car I had on my I pad. When I check them out I notice they are low on detail. I was thinking what the heck higher Res and less detail? I compared the same pic on the ipad and instantly notice the difference. Thinking its impossible I jump into the market and look for another photoviewer and low and behold it displays all that missing detail. I started comparing all my pics on the zoom in both apps on my device (for reference I downloaded viewpic basically it was the first free app I found).
Anyone else notice this? Looks like the stock gallary app is helping to hurt the first impression of the screen and camera when checking out pics. Thankfully it ain't a hardware thing.
Until Google fixes the stock viewer, here is a solution that works for me.
arrtoodeetoo said:
