Strange Window Live Push Mail / Hotmail Problem -- HTML removes line breaks?? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Themes and Apps

So I've configured a mail account on my WM6.5 Touch Pro 2 using Windows Live Mobile (and it shows up as a Hotmail account).
If I *create* a new e-mail from the device using the Hotmail account, the recipient will receive a plain text e-mail. The same is saved in Sent Items. That's fine.
Now, if I'm *replying* to or *forwarding* an e-mail -- regardless of if the thread is HTML or plain text -- the recipient will receive an HTML e-mail with my text in Times New Roman, and all line breaks in my response removed! The same is saved in Sent Items.
This is extremely annoying as:
"Thanks for your help.
See you later,
--J."
Turns into:
"Thanks for your help. See you later, --J."
I can't find a way to get line breaks into my e-mails when I'm replying or forwarding!
Is this normal behaviour for Windows Live Mobile push mail? I'm not having this issue with my POP or IMAP accounts on the phone, just the Hotmail account.
If it matters, I'm on MightyROM 2-10-10 and the Windows Live version is 10.7.0061.0500.2000.
And here's one more twist:
If I reply to / forward an e-mail, but before sending do a Save To Draft (and reopen from the Draft folder), and then send, the whole thread gets converted to plain text, and then my line feeds are retained.
So I suppose that's one workaround, but it's pretty annoying to have to convert a whole thread to plain text just so that I can have line breaks in my e-mail response!
Any ideas? Am I alone on this??

How does email sync with Outlook actually work? Plus syncing sent items

Hi there, I've searched quite a lot but there isn't much I could find regarding syncing with Outlook via activesync..
Like a lot of people I have a gmail account and download that via pop mail on my pc via outlook. I've also set up the same gmail account on my hermes. Now, how is outlook syncing meant to work exactly?
I can see that when synced, all my emails that arrive and are sent on my pc get copied to the "outlook" folder on my phone. Fine, I can view all my pcs messages on my phone.
However if I send any emails via gmail, these do not get copied to my PC's sent folder, and I can't see a way to get this to work. I cannot copy any messages from the gmail sent folder on the phone to the outlook sent folder on the phone. So I can't keep a tab or archive any messages I sent on my phone, on my PC.
If I use the 'outlook' account on my phone to send an email, it just waits on the outbox until I resync and then sends through my outbox email, right? Isn't that pretty pointless? I'm wanting the emails to be sent when I'm not ON my pc! So I can either send emails (but they won't sync) or get synced emails, but only if it sends when connected to my pc (pretty useless).
Does anybody have a way where I can send emails from my phone, using my gmail account so that it sends straight away, and the sent messages will be copied to my outlook sent messages upon syncing?
I realise that I could use an imap server to fix this but I don't really have access to one. I know google can keep a record of all sent mail, but there will still be holes in my outlooks sent items - I am looking for a solution that works with all pop mail accounts.
Thanks a lot!
FWIW, I usually get rid of my Outlook eMail account (it's so redundant ... I already received that mail in my OptOnline POP box) by first ensuring that the Messaging app is pointing to Text Messages, and then browsing to
HKLM->Software->Microsoft->Inbox->Svc
in a Registry Editor and deleting the entire key underneath that for "ActiveSync".
Then ... whenever I send mail (that I wish to keep a copy of) from my 8525, I BCC myself on it. Maybe there's a better method, but this procedure works OK for me.
Just remember (if you're gonna delete the Outlook Account through the registry edit) to make sure that Messaging is currently parked on a different account than the one you're deleting before making the reg change!
Hope this helps,
-pvs

I want to be alerted when subfolders receive mail.

My work, unfortunately, uses Groupwise and I'm gonna get no support in getting a Groupwise mobile server or anything setup, so I'm stuck with syncing local for contacts and appts and tasks. I am, however, using and IMAP access to get my emails, and this works pretty well with the default Pocket Outlook email client.
One thing missing is that I have a couple of subfolders where I have rules that automatically direct emails from like my Boss or other people into the folder so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle of other stuff. However, I'm not getting notification when new emails are pulled into those folders. If I go into my email program I can see that I have new emails there, but I get the buzz or message icon that I have new emails. Is there anyway to make it so when new messages get pulled into the subfolders that I also get notified?
Ideally I'd REALLY like to stick with the default email program as I'm also using Mobile Shell and mobile shell apparently only integrates with the default email app.

I would like the same.
I have never found a fix to this issue and IIRC it is a limitation of the software.
I am using gmail so I just set up forward rules and dummy accounts. So I had account X with sub directory Y I have the email intended to Y get forwarded to account A and set A as a separate account. I dont know if this would work with mobile shell ( if it only looks at the outlook account)

It is indeed an Outlook issue. It only sends alerts on mails in the inbox. On my exchange server, the emails are redirected on the server before Outlook ever sees that they touch the inbox and thus no alert.
The only solution is some sort of third-party app, that would be nice.
If you're using Groupwise as your mail server, what is the email client you run on your workplace computer? And your workplace computer OS?
If your accessing Groupwise mail through Outlook on your work computer, your rules can be setup as client side instead of server side rules. If Groupwise behaves like a MS Exchange then your client side rules would only process when you're logged into your Outlook client. So when you're not in front of your PC, you wouldn't move your mail from your Inbox. Thus making them invisible to Pocket Outlook.
Or you could setup some special notification or delayed move rules. Again assuming you're using Outlook. Ornic InboxRules can be used to create some complex rules if you go that route. I haven't personally used it, but I used the predecessor to it called CaTrap to parse the sender, subject, and parts of the body into a another email and forward that via SMS to my phone.
If you can manage to get stuff to your Pocket Outlook Inbox, there are a few good tools that will give you advanced notification options on your phone. See this thread for details. Hope this helps to get you started.
You can see on http://www.magica.ro/pda_pocket_checkmail.php an application which solves your problem; it works together with ActiveSync and Outlook Mobile in order to alert users about unread mails in Inbox and Subfolders.
You can test it by downloading the demo version.
We published version 2.0 of CheckMail application.
New features are:
- displays messages on "Today Screen";
- audio alert when new messages are received;
- audio reminder if the new messages where not read (the interval when these verifications are made is selectable by user);
- by taping on CheckMail application, user can open Messaging application (Outlook);
- user can select in CheckMail application not to check Inbox (only subfolders).
Visit http://www.software.magicashop.ro/pda_pocket_checkmail.asp to see details and demo application.

need a better email app

the gmail works fine for the main email
but when connecting to secondary accounts the default app sucks WM was much better!!
Try K9...
K9 is a better POP3/IMAP client now available from the marketplace.
still can't select multiple emails to delete, or simply empty the trashcan.
2 absolutely essentials that are pissing me off.
I just want to know if anyone has successfully gotten their Hotmail to work with the email client and how. This is really getting on my nerves.

Unless you have Hotmail Plus it won't work.
Yes, I too would like to get hotmail working. Does anyone know of any new advances with getting it to work on the G1? I have hotmail plus and it still doesn't work. It always has a connection error and or it downloads about 15 of my oldest messages and then has a connection error?
maybe someone can hack the gmail push email program and create a universal push email program
let me continue...
message saved as drafts remain in the drafts folder even after send the email out. connection errors galore. i've had messages will sit in the outbox for over 30 mins even though i have a connection and i can download new messages. can you even create folders for pop3? it is just crap, crap and more crap. google should be embarrassed.

I think both of you have issues not related to the G1. They sound like it is a user issue. I get notifications, I had to check them on, It autoupdates (I choose 1 hour) The layout seems fine. I know what has been read and what has not. You really can't forward a message until you have read the entire message. That would be like me quoting your post before it posted to the forum. Gmail and Outlook both save my messages as drafts, if I go back to that message and send it, it is still saved in the draft folder. However Gmail takes it a step further and saves my messages as drafts every 5 minutes until I sent it or save it for good. Connection errors are because of the network, and Can also cause the messages staying in your outbox. In fact with POP3 messages can act weird even if it has nothing to do with the client. POP3 can't create folders it just downloads the actual message. You need IMAP which is a lot better and has a lot more options. I think that would help most your problems. And I would check to make sure that your servers are receiving the correct information along with checking your settings for the correct information also.
Please report bugs!
If you've found bugs in K-9, please report them to us at http://code.google.com/p/k9mail .
The code was originally based on the built-in android Mail application, but we're making pretty quick progress on bugs and features considering that we just stepped into this codebase.
i think you are basing your post on your gmail mail, i am refering to pop3 accounts in particular. i don't use gmail, but it seems that people are saying that it works for the most part.
i got notifications the first couple of days for my pop3 email, then it stopped working and unselecting and resetting the notification does not turn it back on. i believe this is a known issue.
in my desktop outlook, or pocket outlook and also thunderbird, when a message is in my drafts folder and i eventually send that message out, it is moved from my drafts to the sent folder. the message is sent, it is no longer a draft.
why wouldn't i be allowed to create folders for pop3 email? imap just auto creates the directory structure you have on your mail server.
yes, i do know that connection errors are due to connection errors, but when messages sit in my outbox, while i send test messages to myself and i can receive them, that is not due to my phone network errors.
i will go and log things i see...i hope to see an improvement.
thanks
I agree that the email client is the worst part of this phone
I use POP3 but I hear people complaining the same way about IMAP.
How about something simple e.g. number of bloody messages coming in.
"Load more messages"
What the hell does that mean ? When has there EVER been a load more messages prompt in an email program. I've been using email since back in the days of Pine and I always have a sense of how many messages are in my inbox. Apparently not for the G1.
No easy way to sort messages - and the connection errors just go without saying.
Nick
totally agree about the "load more messages".....why not give you an option to pick how many it loads by default.?..... senseless

This works because of the software gmail uses... not the software on your phone.
Push is a server side implication, while Pull is client side. So if you find a way to Pull email as well as gmail can push than you are on to something.
At least all of you are lucky enough to get your pop3 email setup. It won't even accecpt mine. I have Mediacom (mail.mchsi.com) and it won't even set my 2 mediacom email accounts up. Just says server connection error. My AT&T Tilt never had a problem setting these accounts up. Definately need something new for a pop3 email client. K-9 does the same thing as the default email client.

are you using the correct ports?
I got it to work. I never had to use SSL before. Not even in Outlook for this account or on my WM6.1. But setting the G1 to SSL mail sever did the trick. Now I'm just disgusted with how it handles mail, slow, does not display stuff, won't delete, incorrect un-read messages, read messages mark themselves unread everytime it checks the mail. I hope RC31 brings relief to these and other mail troubles (too many to remember).

It has been perfect for my mail, are you using pop3?
this has been my main complaint from day one.
Worst email app ever.

Problem with mail attached to mail

I'm having a problem with outlook and mail attachments.
I've received a number of emails which have another email attached. If I try and open the attachment I get the message "The attachment is of a file type that could be unsafe, etc, etc."
Therefore if I go to safe the attachment by using "Save As....." it wont let me select the type of file, I just have to save it. The file is therefore saved without a file extension.
Consequently, seemingly the only way I can open the file is to run up word and open it from there, the file opens, but the header information text is readable but the main message would appear to be in ASCII hex.
This is very frustrating Is there a fix? Have I missed something obvious??
How long should one wait before bumping?
I suspect not many people get emails embedded in emails anymore, so it's probably not something that is that common. I'll have a play tomorrow, see if i can reproduce it.
Do the embedded emails have the .msg extension?
Emm, you are not really being clear... Are you talking about emails in your outlook mobile? If so, why don't you check what the emails are on a desktop computer? See what the attachment is there, and see who is the sender and what kind of email it is. Could be a virus, who knows.

I've just tested it with my HD2, and it works fine with a .eml attachment. It is on base settings (I hard reset this morning) so maybe it is a program or setting you've added?
I have encountered the same problem.
I think it happens when someone tries to forward a mail and i don't know if this is significant but it always happens for me when someone tries to forward and email from an aol account. (not sure if aol does something when forwarding)
I haven't yet found a way to read it on the hd2 but whenever I check it on my pc it displays fine.
OK, I understand the confusion. I'll try and put it into perspective; imagine the scene:
You're at the car hire desk, following a delayed and very frustrating flight. You need the hire car booking code for the nice lady so she can give you your car. It's late and the work office is now empty.
You know you've been email'd the booking code from the office.
However the office has used that nice trick in XP Outlook where you select several emails, click forward and add the address.
The selected e-mails arrive as attachments on a new e-mail.
You 'click to save' the attachment, the attachment being the e-mail with the booking ref. Only to find you have no means of viewing it.
Lady behind desk not very impressed by HTC phone and wonders why I didn't buy an Iphone like everyone else. Being a lady behind a desk she is not interested in Snapdragon!!
The end result. Get laptop out, wait an age for it to boot up, log-in, no wifi, so copy saved attachment over to Laptop from phone. Give it a .msg extension. All is well in the world.
Life shouldn't be this complicated!
Just run a test for ya, sending from outlook 2007, by selecting 4 inbox emails and choosing fwd, sent to my outlook sync account, and to another pop server i check only from the phone.
Attachments went with .eml extension.
No problem opening on teh phone, even when i then forwarded the email on as a fwd, so they were double nested.
Must be office xp? what extension does it give the mail attachments?

Thanks for that. It got me thinking. It would appear to be an issue with my Sky E-mail account, although the phone isn't completely blameless.....I'll explain;
If I forward the original e-mail plus attachments to my Hotmail account from Outlook XP, it arrives on my HD2 with the attachments properly recognised, and as you say, you can open the attachments.
However, If I send the same mail from Outlook XP to my Sky email account, when I logged online to view the emails plus attachment, Sky (aka Google) 'decodes' the attached e-mails and appends to the end of the original e-mail.
If I forward the e-mail from Sky Online back to either Outlook XP, or Hotmail the e-mail arrives with no attachments, just the text fom the attachments appended to the original e-mail. You still with me?!
However, this is not the case with the HD2! They still arrive as attachments, but they're unreadable!!
So this is going to be a no-win situation. Google will blame Microsoft, and Microsoft will blame Google (aka Sky).
Unless anyone has any other bright ideas, looks like I'm 'Donald Ducked'
(this is just a thought)
try checking the sky account for a setting that may be forcing send in plain text rather than html?
A Fix?
OK, I have a fix.....
If I forward the message from my Phone's IMAP SKy account to my Hotmail account, Hotmail can decode it, and recognises the attachments as e-mail. I can then open the attachments on my phone.
Bizarley, if I do the same but to My Outlook XP account, it too doesn't recognise the attachments, and refuses to let me open them!
All a bit weird, but I have a work around.
Thanks for your help everyone, it got me on the right track.
And sorry HTC for assuming you were at fault.

I checked it out, no such option. In general the Sky IMAP email is working well, I can receive HTML based emails no problem. Just this single strange phenomenon with attached e-mails.
As someone has already said, it's not a situation you get very often. At least I have a relativly quick workaround should it happen again. Although the idea of sending an e-mail back to yourself is probably prohibitive if the attachment is very large.

Gmail emails not deleting?

Hi everyone,
I have searched the forum for similar problems but can't find anything. I have my email set to check email every 15 minutes. Even after I delete the emails from my phone, when gmail is checked 15 minutes later, the emails return once again as "new". On the computer version of gmail, the emails are still unread in the inbox.
How can I set the "delete" on the email tab to actually get rid of the email? (preferable send the email to the archive function of gmail)
Thanks in advance.
anyone?????
I have the save problem
Use activesync (with push) instead of POP/imap, works perfectly.
Mine did the same thing until I changed my mail settings to say "delete from server" and also "immediately" if you don't change your delete settings to immediate then it wont actually erase the mail until the next time it connects and downloads it all over again.
GMAIL not deleting - Windows Mobile 6.5
I'm running WinMo 6.5 Cell ROM on a Touch Pro 2 from HTC.
I have exactly the same problem. I delete GMAIL messages from the Inbox on my handset. Next time the phone does a Send/Receive it brings down all the new mail again from the GMAIL server. Basically the handset is not marking mail as being deleted, nor is it marking the mail as read on the server.
I'm using GMAIL in MAPI/SMTP mode on the handset as this is what is accepted by default when setting up the GMAIL account on the device.
I've no experience of using ActiveSync/PUSH for mail. How do you set it up?

I use activesync to download all my messages from google, It also pulled my calendar and contacts to the handset too, I found the instructions by going to: wwwDOTgoogleDOTcom/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138636&topic=14299 (wont let me post outside links, so Dot = .) Also on section 11 before syncing everything, I synced each item individually first then switched them all on as I was getting errors.
ActiveSync and PUSH MAIL for Google Mail is the best alternative for being able to hardly experience inbox and retrieval errors.
to delete emails go into your inbox and when you delete, use the left softkey (the bin icon) to delete and not the sense menu.
Gmail not syncing
I had the exact same issue. I searched forever until I found what worked for me. It appears to be an issue is you restore using nandroid. Here is the link on how to do it.
