digitizer broken - how to force activesync... - HD2 General

Hi, a friend of mine used my eight weeks old HD2 accidentally as a seat cushion and now my display glass is broken. This is pretty sad. The phone boots up normal and the display lights up and functions but I can’t use the touchscreen, no input is possible
I can’t enter my pin or switch to active sync, so I see no way to get my contacts, calendar and notes. There are some really important things on this phone and my last backup is a month old.
Is there a way to force an active sync connection or any other way to read out the internal memory?
Some help would be really great, I am a bit desperate here.

Ok, just searched the forum and still didn't find an answer. There are severel other threads regarding a non functioning digitizer, but everyone wants to do a hard reset, not a backup
Is it some way possible to still save (backup) my data from the internal memory without the touch input? Maybe with a gold card? Can't be that HTC has no way to read out the internal memory.
HTC told me that the repair process includes a hard reset and all my data will be gone.
It's really annoying, the display is still readable and I could write down all my notes and calendar events, when I had a way to navigate the UI.
Does no one have a clue?

I know this may not help you as its a bit late in coming - but if you remove the microsd card then the default action when you plug your usb cable in is activesync so you may be able to get something out of your broken hd2...
I too have a broken screen and was able to get my contacts and take a full reg backup using CERegEditor.. I only wish now i had installed MyMobiler remote control prior to the screen brake it would have made life much easier...
And no i cant install it now as the damm prompt for unknown publisher is wanting a screen press.
again if only i had disabled that too using the reg hack id be sorted...
"With a registry editor go to HKLM \ Security \ Policies \ Policies \ 0000101a and change the value to "1". This will disable warnings."
cheers

Windows mobile 5 one step ahead and one step back?

HI
Yesterday i just got my universal, it was long waited and i was so excited that i could barely unpack it ;-)
now i have been playing with it for several hours, and i must say im quite happy, my version is the Qtek 9000 and i dont have the some of the issues that is mentioned here with other brands. mine is fast clearly faster than my old qtek 9090.
what i am a little disapoointed in is more the new windows mobile 5, well i do like the new added functions, and i really like the idea of the new gps api and camera api. i hope this will give is much more software that support thise functions.
there is just a few things i really dont understand why Microsoft has change fx:
- Why has messenger undergone such a downgrade? i liked to have my messenger automatically connect when i got onliine, its not pssoble anymore and alot of other setting are gone also.
- Microsft has change the way memory works by locking the slider, so you cand decide how much to use for program and stoage, fine with me but why on earth cant you place your documents folder on the storage card and have activesync 4 sync it there then????? im i missing something here?
- Activesync is now version 4, in 3.8 you could specify how long back in time you wanted emails to sync, i syncronized 6 month back, in windows mobile 5 you can only use predefined values and it only goes 1 month back what is the idea behind that? why does microsoft thinks they know better than me how long back i want to sync?
But let me say again i am quite happy with my universal, i just dont understand the above changes. i thaoght higher version meaned more options not less :-(
The 9000!??!?!?!??!?!?
Aaaargh!
I must wait until the 11'th of November!
And that's a Friday, so I'll probably have to wait until Monday or Tuesday!
Do you know what supplier your shop bought it from?
I bought i directly from Dangaard denmark, im a registered dealer..
in denmark it was scheduled for november 5. but moved fast when i it suddently was on stock the day before yesterday
you have something to look forward to, i love it
yes yes ok i guess im a nerd lol
You lucky b****rd!!
I've been waiting for AGES for this phone!
Dangaard has it for 11/11-05.. It's a shame..
Dangaard is Danish, right?
Can't help you with your other questions, but I think I know the answer to this one:

The hardware in the Exec is different to any of its earlier relatives. Now we have persistant (i.e. permanent) storage which behaves like a rewritable ROM, plus a 'Programs' memory which is RAM. Your installed programs, files, and documents are stored in the persistant storage and will not be lost even if the battery is completely flat! This is a big step forward from previous models, in which everything was stored in power-dependent RAM.
In the old days you could move the slider to choose between allocation of RAM to storage or running programs because it was all one storage location in hardware. With the Universal we have two physical types of storage so you can't change how it is used.
I agree with the title of your post: One step forward and one back. WM5 is .... different. Not necessarily better from a simple usability point of view. They give us two soft buttons at the bottom of the screen to perform common tasks (which is good ) but this removes a huge chunk of usable screen area (which is bad ). IMHO the benefits of WM5 will only be seen over time.
I agree that it is a huge advantage that we now have persistant storage, but it is really a problem that you cant move the activesync document folder to the storage card, there is not much memory in the internal storage ram in the new version to save data, so if you have fx. a excel document you like to have sync and use on both desktop and pocket pc then you would need to manually copy between SD card and internal memory. To me it really seems like a half finnished and not thought thoug solution they have made here
another thing i noticed about wm 5 and active sync is that you canot change the default folder (in outlook) for syncronising contacts. i tried the tools/options... menu that should give me many settings to do but no good.
and how about sheduling? do you get any settings for that? i dont.
maybe i do something wrong but with the s100 everything was a litle bit more easy.

New XDA Mini S - Too slow to use ...even in 'Corporate Mode'

Hello
I have just purchased a new XDA Mini S - to replace my dying XDA II (which was giving me electrical shocks and starting to lose data).
Ash (an extremely knowledgeable and helpful O2 shop assistant in Uxbridge) directed me to this site so I could get the details required to to set-up and run my new PDA in Corporate mode.
After set-up was completed, I synchronised the Mini with my work computer (via Activesynch 4.1) - allowing me to download my calender, task and contact items.
And that's it so far!! ...no other memory-intensive applications installed, ...no massive ringtone files, ...nothing!!
However, the unit is running very slow in comparison to my old XDA II. When I am working in the Calender application and go forward several weeks, followed by selecting the 'return to today' icon, it takes about 10 seconds to react. Similar behaviour exists in 'Tasks', when returning to the 'Today screen', and when using the menus - so, basically, all of the time. My previous unit reacted instantly - and that was fully loaded with software.
What can I do? I love the new Mini and the upgraded spec it offers - but is is unworkable - as described above.
If I invested in a mini-SD card could I utilise the additional space as program memory rather than storage?
Hopefully somebody can help. I am reasonably I.T. savvy - but only as a user and not much experience at progrommer / developer level - so basic intructions my be needed!!
Thanks in advance
Gary
I think my previous message was too long...
Basically, how can i speed up my XDA Mini S which is already running in Corporate Mode?
Thanks
Gary
Soft-reset once a day? My Vario runs acceptably quickly after a soft-reset, but slows down over time.
Hi Zathras
Thanks for the tip...
...but I have been 'soft-resetting' several times per day - and it doesn't seem to help.
I do have several years of appointments in my diary. Would reducing this to only 2 weeks of history help?
Thanks
Gary
Hi Gary,
I had a Magician before and also feel the 02 mini s (Wizard) is way slower.
I have read elsewhere that the Wizard has a silly anti-virus program that always runs in memory and will chew up memory.
The boards indicate that to use a different extended rom. The only problem is I cannot get a view on which portions of the o2 Rom should be deleted and which should be kept.
Let me know if you find a way.
Thanks
Adrian
I have noticed a few times after running active snc on my mini s it slows right down till i soft reset.
could it be the same problem?
Hi Adrian
Thanks for your help...
I'm not a programmer / developer - so wouldn't know where to start with ROM edits, etc...
Knowing my luck I would probably do something unrecoverable!!
Is there an easy way to do this? Is it done in the Wizard directly - or via the PC?
...and is it a file that's viewable in explorer?
Excuse my basic approach to all of this. Maybe there is a tutorial somewhere on the boards...
Thanks
Gary
does it slow down after active sync has run ?
Goto to settings memory and make sure all your programs are shut down especially activesync as this seems to slow it down more than anything. Also download check notifications and remove any entries in red that have probably appeared especially if you have been soft resetting several times per day.
You really should see a speed increase if you complete the above. Activesync really does slow your wizard down and more than a few duplicate entries found and removed with check notifications will really help.
See if that helps.
It seems to be the same before and after activesynch!!!
I closed down all running programs and the Calendar is still dead slow...
How do you 'download check notications'?
Thanks again
Gary

Thanks for your help
Do I need to install both 'Check Notifications' and 'Notification Clearfix'.
I am correct in presuming that 'Notification Clearfix' prevents future duplications whereas 'Check Notifications' lets you see all events, whether or not thet are offending?
Gary
try tweaks 2k2 there are some reg hack that help with peformance
I've installed the one that runs at startup, but it only helps clean up the list at startup - not after startup; so if you add alarms/etc., the list can get mucky again. So I've also got it under an icon to run from time to time Need to find a nice scheduling application that can run other applications - just have it run every 8 hours or so
Try some other apps apart from your calendar, it could be that there is just too much info in there. You may just find its not as speedy as your last device, but thats just the way it is. Its a trade off and maybe if the speed is a big issue the wizard isnt for you.
I heard a lot of people saying the wizard is slow before I bought one, but I found its speed fine for what I expect from the device. I find my uni much quicker, but again its that trade off, my uni is much bigger.
The wizard needs to be loved for what it is not for what you want it to be.
I'm trying to love it - believe me !!!
...it is only the speed of the calendar searches that really annoys me - I can cope with the sluggish moments.
And I have just discovered something... when you cross one month to the next, the calendar freezes
If someone can do the following for me - it will verify whether it is specifically my unit that is at fault.
Open Calendar, switch to 'Agenda View', and then, using the directional keypad, arrow right until you cross over one month - say January to February. Does the calendar stop working?
When it rcovers, hit the 'go to today' icon. What happens?
I think there is a bug!!
Gary
Got the mini s ab out a month ago from O2 shop. I just did a hard reset and didn't install any of the O2 crap. Is running quite fast and everything just seems fine. I have tried what you said on the calendar. I don't have any problem. The calendar program just keep running without stopping or anything. After I close the calendar, I pressed on the 'Today' button and everything seems fine.
Thanks for trying for me - I appreciate it...
I just need to find a solution that works for me.
I already have the most basic install possible - corporate mode - so wonder if there are any more avenues to go down...
Cheers for now
Gary

Just tried this on my Charmer in case it was a WM5 bug and I can't replicate it - all works fine.
Try doing a hard reset, and then just when the little box comes up saying something like 'customising in 3 seconds' quickly press the soft-reset button.
Voila! - basic WM5 with no more o2 crap installed! You'll have to set up the gprs and mms yourself, but if you phone cust. sevices then they can e-mail you the instructions...
It should run faster than before.

EDIT Help please... Bluetooth half-gone

Here goes.
I bought a Magician a few months back. Hated the lack of space but liked the Bluetooth functionality. I could connect wirelessly around the house no problem. Sending/receiving files to/from anyone with a Bluetooth device.
Decided to proceed with BigStorage ROM Flash. Flash succesful. Enjoyed adequate space. Hated Bluetooth. I tried to get some help in this forum but the help extended wasn't exactly too successful. I was missing the [`Bluetooth] option in ActiveSync [a registry key I believe], and I couldn't send/receive files. I decided to give up on it until I had enough time to retrieve the registry key by reflashing with shipped ROM and flashing back to BigStorage.
I found the time to do it last week. Flashed and reflashed several times [every single attempt was successful], checking and rechecking for the Bluetooth registry keys. Yet I couldn't find them.
My Magician can still detect Bluetooth devices so I'm sure the hardware isn't busted. But I can't even transfer files using Bluetooth. Tried installing that Bluetooth Stack from http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33532. Added some new features, but functionality is as stated in this paragraph.
Help? ::crycry:: hahahaha
I am now totally clueless as to how to go about this predicament..
EDIT
I've recently did the BigStorage ROM on my Magician. And everything was just peachy. Up until I tried to sync my Magician to the PC via Bluetooth.
Before I did the ROM patch, I was able to sync my unit through Bluetooth after some few hours of tweaking my system. But after I did the patch, I tried to sync it again through Bluetooth. My PC was waiting for the Magician but the unit kept disconnecting itself.
I ran Activesync on the Magician, went to its settings, and the Bluetooth option was gone. Only `USB was left along with some numbers (baud rates?), when previously it had `Bluetooth as well.
I'm sure Bluetooth works (as I've installed the CAB associated with it from the ExtRom) on the unit since it can make a device pairing and ask for a passkey and all that, but syncing through Bluetooth doesn't work anymore.
Could anyone shed some light on this for me?

try pairing your device to the pc! make sure that ur pc is not listed on the magician paired devices, activate the pairing from the magician through bluetooth under settings system tab through "Bluetooth ActiveSync Setup" and go from there.
let me know how you go!
errr.. ok i tried what you suggested. and i'm starting to wonder..
now my device can't see and can't be seen. i can't make a pair anymore even from the pc. my unit says 'no new devices found' yet my pc is discoverable.
broken bluetooth radio maybe (but it was working before the patch...)? or could it be a cab file i missed?
Hi i'm only new myself but you could try a soft reset then retry pairing your device, or a hard reset and see if the bluetooth works then? or maybe even try the cab file on
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33532
I have found that worst case senario a hard reset and look for the right bluetooth cab to install from the ext rom.
run a search on this site for ext rom and look for the post with details about each of the seperate files and what they do!
*Edit* i did a quick search and i wasnt able to find anything in the ext rom that applies to bluetooth setup or settings! so i guess a hard reset maybe the best way to find out whether is software or hardware?!!
Maybe one of the more experienced guys on this site might be able to help you further.
Hope this helps a little
thanks for your time boh113. i can still sync through the USB port so i guess bluetooth will have to wait. i just use it for wireless internet around the house when i'm not at the pc anyway.
i might try the hard reset when i have more time to tinker with the magician. but in any case, i'd like to thank you for trying to help
just an update in case somebody can help
i managed to pair my device with the pc already. but i still can't connect via bluetooth in the magician's async.
ok i found something in my registry pertaining to my problem. although i'm not sure how to fix it.
in the magician's async, under tools -> options -> PC -> options, there's a drop-down list for PC synchronization options:
`115200 Default
`19200 Default
`38400 Default
`57600 Default
`USB
there was a `Bluetooth option included at the end of the list before i did the bigstorage ROM.
going back to the registry, i found the keys to this list (although i'm not entirely sure if these are correct, but these are the only ones on my list)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Comm\RasBook\`115200 Default
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Comm\RasBook\`19200 Default
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Comm\RasBook\`38400 Default
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Comm\RasBook\`57600 Default
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Comm\RasBook\`USB
and to what i can see, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Comm\RasBook\`Bluetooth doesn't exist. there are a whole lot of hex values under these keys and i'm not sure what they are for.
although if somebody could post/upload the `Bluetooth key from their device, i'd be grateful.
i'm aware that the hex values are also based upon hardware but i'm willing to try it out.
Ok i can find what your talking about but i dont have the ability to copy and paste the registry entry anywhere?!
if you can tell me how to get hold of this for you i'd be happy to help anyway i can!
most registry editors have the capability for exporting specific keys up to whole trees. perhaps if you have resco explorer and the registry add-on. or some other software similar to it. tap-hold and export?
thanks
I have resco explorer and the registry add-on but i cant find anyway to export the registry file?!
There's an option for import but thats it, also there's an option to copy but all it allows you to do is copy and past within the registry itself!
unfortunately i dont have the technical experience to do much ore tha n this, a quick guide as to which program to use and how to do it and i would be more than happy to help!
oh ok. open up resco explorer or the registry add-on. then navigate your way to this folder:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Comm\RasBook
there should be a \`Bluetooth\ folder within \RasBook\ what you do is tap-and-hold on that (`Bluetooth) folder until you see the drop down text list. "Export..." should be one of the options then you can specify where to put it. by default resco places it in the main memory
will wait thanks boh113
No worries found it and exported for your satisfaction!
Had to zip it ;D
hope this can help you further!
Goodluck
Much appreciated!!
Will try it out in a bit. I'll post my results after
Thanks boh113!
well, i got back the `Bluetooth option in async. but still doesn't want to connect to the pc. the hex values probably don't match the hardware in my unit. oh well. i'll test it out a couple more hours. and if i still don't get it to work, a hard reset might be my only solution. or re-flash with my original rom and start all over again. hahahaha
thanks for your help and time boh113. forgive me for having taken too much of it
No worries, sorry i couldnt have been of more help!
Good luck with it all!
*bump*

Resetting WM6 to WM5

Due to synchronization problems and not being able to "hard reset" my X7500 I need to find out if I can return to the WM 5 I originally had on it. Does anyone have an idea if this problem can be solved in any way?
My device is an X7500 with WM 6 on it. When I try to reinstall / reset the device I still have certain items on it. (For example my internet connection settings). When I try to synchronize, the device does briefly display the number of items it processes, but after finishing, there are no items on the device.
Thanks in advance for any advise.
Greetings
Fred
Hard reset
Hi there,
Are you serious you cant hard reset? Thats no good!!....You can't push the volume slider down and then press your stylus into the hole at the back? Is your Volume slider broken? Maybe another soft way to initiate the bootloader restore screen......
The best thing to do with this device is to get it up to Mitchy Windows Mobile 6.1 - doesnt really matter which one. Even if its working perfectly with standard mobile 6 or 5.
The increase in simply useability is rather large and rather worth it. Docx and XLSX support etc... much faster - proper real VGA built in.

[Q] What is an old/broken blackstone good for?

Hello,
Today I found my old broken (digitizer not working) touch HD sleeping in a dusty box... and I kind of felt sad for it.
All the hardware on the phone is working just fine except for the touch pannel
So I was thinking, is it possible to make some good use of it without investing any money for repair (it's just not worth it, as I have the brilliant HD2 since the day it got realeased)?
Having a non-working digitizer doesn't leave a lot of options but here is an idea:
Car tracking device? - have it installed in my car, constantly charging from the car battery, listening to GPS and sending coordinates over gsm data to my PC/server.
1. The blackstone have a GPS and you can install a simple data only SIM card from your provider, allowing your device to connect to a remote server over the internet and send important data - like gps coordinates.
2. It's still possible to install any custom rom you like.
3. There is a way to skip initial touch calibration screen: make an empty text file and rename it to "welcome.not" and place it in the root ot your sd card. (Thanks to Chef_Tony for pointing that out!)
4. There is a way to control the device via PC and a USB cable: after hard reset your device default usb connection mode will be ActiveSync. Then run the free MyMobiler application on the PC and it will automatically install on the usb connected device, allowing you to fully control it via your PC mouse and keyboard. (Thanks to Chef_Tony for pointing that out!)
I'm sure that I'm not the first nor the only one that came up with an idea like this, but I couldn't find any topic on it. I also know there are many brilliant developers in XDA that make loads of awesome apps for our HTC devices.
So, any ideas?

Best wishes,

new digitizer is about $8.. buy it, fix it at home and sell it for $100
yes, you can always replace the digitizer and have a fine phone.
but anyways, since your plan seems pretty interesting, here is some basic input to help you:
3. you can bypass the OOBE. all you need to do is, create an empty txt file on your pc, "untitled.txt" and rename it to "Welcome.not", (yes, change the extension to "not") and put it in the root of the sd card, then the welcome wizard should be skipped after a hard reset, and so you don't need to align the screen.
4. after a hard reset, the default option for a usb connection is activesync. then you can run MyMobiler on your pc, it will install on the device automatically and you can control the device on your pc's screen with keyboard and mouse.
so you can still use it for anything you like, if you control it over the pc and preconfigure it to meet your needs.

I gave it a shot few months ago and I failed The problem was that the digitizer is literally glued to the lcd panel, and detaching it is a REAL pain the butt (I almost broke it). Anyway, after reassembly the new touch screen didn't work and I gave up. I cursed myself later on when I found the topic here in XDA forums that the best way is to buy a digitizer+lcd combo...

Thank you fine sir for the light on the topic. I'll make sure to add this in the first post
Every new idea/info will be of great value reaching the goals of this thread
Ok, putting a welcome.not file on the root of the sd card did the trick as promised. I conneced the device to my PC via usb and as expected it connected via ActiveSync by default.
Unfortunatelly MyMobiler was unable to install the mobile part of the app automatically - it poped a message on the phone "This program is from an unknown publisher..." and it's now waiting for confirmation to continue the execution of the app... and it's pretty impossible to confirm this with a broken touch pannel
I believe there is a registry workaround for this, but it should be set by default in a cooked rom? I'm using the latest WWE rom from HTC.com.
It will be great if some good chef could mod this rom and make this annoying message go away
1. i just had an idea on how to get mymobiler running. i cannot promise, that it'll work, but it certainly doesn't hurt.
having the latest mymobiler on your pc, you see different files there, some of which are named:
remote.exe
remote.exe.40
remote.exe.50
when you connect the device in activesync mode, and set it up for syncing (at least notes or browser favorites, something that does not actually mess with your pim data), you will see the blackstone in "My Computer". entering it, you have the storage home drive and the storage card. by enabling "Show hidden files" and disabling "Hide system files" in your windows explorer, you should be able to access the windows folder of the device. then you can copy the file remote.exe.50 there, rename it to remote.exe (the .40 file is for wm2003, the .50 file for wm5 or greater, but you need to remove the extension to make it executable).
and then, since you cannot make shortcuts yet, copy the file again to \Windows\StartUp\
thereby making it run automaticly, when the device boots. then soft reset, and i am fairly certain, you should be able to run mymobiler.
from there on, you could disable the signature warning for future programs.
EDIT: apparently, the startup folder is victim to the certification warning as well. still i leave this paragraph, as i find it interesting as to how mymobiler works.
2. another idea would be to just flash any cooked rom found here on the forum. all of them have this stupid signature warning disabled and are ready to run mymobiler out of the box.
3. my third idea to get it running is trying to modify the responsible reg key:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\Security\Policies\Policies\0000101a
it is a dword key, where the value '0' is activated warning, and '1' means, the warning is disabled.
in the 2577.zip in the attachment, you will find a reg key, that changes this value and also a cab file to do the same thing.
on a device with an ARM cpu, the folder 2577\ on the storage card will be monitored for autorun.exe and execute it, when the card is inserted. i also packed 3 different autorun.exe files in there, one by me, one by navigon, and one by igo, hoping at least one of them would work with a proper certificate. what you'd need to do, is extract it, and copy it to the storage card, so the path is \Storage Card\2577\Autorun.exe
autorun classic works with the CFG.txt, which is also included and changed to work, as long as your rom is WWE and the storage card is actually named \Storage Card\, if not, edit the path.
until now, i was unable to run it, because the autorun.exe files aren't signed with a trusted certificate either, but i'll give other people time to post ideas, and rethink the thing, maybe i can make it work for you.
still i think, if you are gonna use the device for a few little features, you are not required to use the stock rom, so flashing another rom, which then does not have the certification warning would be the easiest way to go for everyone involved.
Connect it to your PC and use it as a monitoring tool!
Can come handy when benchmarking.
