way to remove htc keyboard? - Hero CDMA General

just curious, tried to do some searching, but any way to remove the htc keyboard and get the stock android one?
I am currently running gumbo 1.5c and would like to try the stock one out because for some reason when texting in google voice the htc keyboard goes reallllly slow but while in defualt messaging app texting is fine.
but when i tried the stock keyboard on 2.01 by darch on GV it typed fine
soooo hopefully some way?
thanks

You should be able to go into Settings, Text Input and uncheck Touch Input.
Then in messaging app or really any text area hold it down and Edit Input.
Should work fine.

Hmm. I was curious and tried this on fresh's rom. Now I don't have a keyboard at all. lol. is there an apk for the android one, or is it built in some other way, I'm not familiar with how that works

The default Android keyboard will/should always be there. The HTC keyboard, the keyboard that comes with the SenseUI can be removed or changed back to the "Android" keyboard.
To do this:
1. Open your messaging app
2. Click and hold where you type a message
3. A box should popup and saying, "Select Input method"
4. Choose the Android keyboard.
Hope that helps.

Interesting. It sounds like it could be a ROM problem, have you tried just reinstalling the file?
If not, here's the file -- download, unzip, and push the .apk via shell/command prompt back to your phone, and then reboot your phone.
Code:
1. adb push HTC_IME.apk /system/app/
2. adb shell reboot
3. exit

The .odex file isn't really that important, its for the Android Dalvik JVM -- you can actually delete this file.
And did you actually get Windows 7 mobile to run on Hero?

No, it should not always be there, you need a "LatinIme.apk", i think you could probably pull it out of a samsumg moment dump and use it on 1.5

HAHAH, what a coincidence, I just looked up a AOSP 1.5 ROM for the dream to see if the music apk would work, and it does, I just posted it in a new thread. So I've already got the LatinIme too. Thanks alot! I didn't know what apk I would have been looking for

I stand corrected.

I pushed the HTC keyboard back over, but I'm still having trouble getting the text input option to come up. I've done it before, so I don't think i'm doing anything stupid... Just hold in a text field until it comes up, right? I think I'm gonna try installing swype just to see if i can change text input then.

MT3G + Hero + Console App = no numbers?

I am currently running [PORT] TF3D V3 By Drizzy for 32B on my MT3G.
I have noticed that in any console app, be it ConnectBot, or SU File Manager & Terminal, I am literally unable to enter a number.
When I longpress the "e/3" I get "e3" as output
When I press the "12#" button The VK doesnt switch to number/symbol mode
This isn't a big enough problem for me to try flashing other ROMs and testing, but thought I could put the communal brainpower here on XDA to try and narrow down a solution (unless it's unique to me lol)
Thanks in advance for the help!
you need to use the default android keyboard in these applications. The HTC keyboard does not work correctly. Currently i have not been able to find a resolution to that problem but noticed the same thing. Switch keyboards and works just fine.

Ok, thanks, glad to hear it's not just me going crazy.
The ROM I am currently using does not have the android keyboard. Any idea what APK and ODEX are named that I would need to pull out of a stock cupcake ROM in order to install the default android keyboard?
Well, I found LatinIME.apk in another ROM, but when trying to Install I get this error:
Application not Installed
Android keyboard could not be installed on this phone.
wtf?

Few cyanogen questions

I have a few questions so instead of making a whole bunch of threads I just made one. If you could at least answer one question I would appreciate it.
All relate to 32B by the way.
I know that I had to download a new keyboard, but is there a better keyboard than the default one available for cyanogen, or do all keyboards work?
Is there a way to customize Cyanogen with themes?
Is there a Wifi tethering app?
Also is there a way to view the system files to your phone? I need to upgrade my recovery.
I do not know much about cyanogen his ROMs, but I had it once and I think it was WiFi tethering. and it is very easy to update the recovery through a terminal on the phone.
How do I do the terminal thing? I have the adb thing or whatever but I do not know how to use it.

Best/Fastest ROM

I am currently using modacco's 2nd to latest rom.
Its not as fast as fresh 1.0. What rom do you guys think is the fastest?
Gumbo 1.5 with MoDaCo custom kernel 1.2
Gutted 1.5 with MCK 1.2
Any 1.6's or above?
Fastest: Any of the AOSP really
Best (IMO): AOSP 1.6 due to the speed & battery life

I really like it, but does anyone know how to put the old keyboard on it.
I like the white one instead of the new black one without autocorrect and all that good stuff.

I'm running TTG 0.1.6 with Modaco custom kernal and it seems pretty snappy, don't have others to compare it to though so I'm not much help. Question though. I read a few posts about enabling compcache (?) on the new MCK, is that advised to make it even speedier? If so, I'm there! Is there a cheat sheet for how to do this?
Just a quick note. Clicker.apk is not necessary for the HTC IME. It's the calibration feature so if you want that then you need Clicker.apk. I did notice in my experiences with the HTC IME that the libt9.so library is needed. I always got force closes without it. Anyone else notice this?
The one I linked, cyanogen removed the dependencies on framework & lib files.

Installing 3rd Party Apps

Here is how to install 3rd party applications. I'm not going to go into detail for every step so a little more research may be required if you don't understand all the terms. Search around, it's how I learned.
1. Download and extract the Android SDK. Once it is extracted copy it to the root of your C drive and to make your life easier rename it to sdk. So in the end it should be C:\sdk.
2. Download and install HTC Sync.
3. After the install of HTC Sync is complete connect your phone to the computer and select the HTC Sync option for the connection type on your phone. It doesn't matter if it fails to connect or gives you any error. When I did it the phone told me it couldn't find HTC Sync on my PC but I just hit OK and moved on.
5. Copy whatever 3rd party apps you are looking to install to the tools folder. (C:\sdk\tools). DO NOT rename the files, I had problems after doing that.
6. Open up a command prompt on your PC (In windows it's start, run, cmd) and change to the tools directory.
cd\
cd sdk\tools
After you change to that directory the prompt should say: c:\sdk\tools.
7. Type adb devices to verify that your computer can see the phone. If everything is working you should get a response that looks something like this:
List of devices attached
HTxxxxxxxxx device
8. Once you verify that the computer and phone are connected type the following:
adb install nameofapp.apk (obviously changing the nameofapp part to whatever the file is named).
You should see it copy the app then install and at the end it will say successful. All done!
Feel free to add to this if I missed anything....

Thanks KB for the update, an easy workaround that I don't mind performing at all. Now if only we can remove those pesky AT&T bloatware they slapped on it, and get a nice Root going, we'll be in business!
Heck, I'd be willing to buy an extra Aria for someone around here if they could get a quick root/2.2 update going for this thing.

Step 6 may seem a little unwieldy, but here is a trick I learned.
1) Create a shortcut for CMD.exe on your desktop.
2) Right click the CMD.exe shortcut and go to Properties.
3) In the Start in: bar, type in the directory for the android SDK tools folder you put on your computer. For example, my start in address is:
Code:
"I:\HTC Hero\android-sdk-windows\tools"
Now everytime you open this CMD.exe shortcut, it will start in the correct folder to perform adb commands.
As far as Swype goes, you can get an e-mail for the installer through here.
I did run into a problem, since Swype will not install correctly because it needs to download and apply another .apk, which AT&T's blocks will not allow. Swype really isn't important enough to me to get it otherwise, as I'm happy installing the other apps I've been missing out on.
Hope that helps!

I'm sorry I can't be more technical, but I use an easier way to install 3rd party apps, even multiple installs at once. Everything above is the same except AFTER step 3.. go to http://de.codeplex.com/ and download droidexplorer, once you have it, connect your phone to the pc, execute droidexplorer (droid explorer can take up to 2 mins (or maybe longer) to load so be patient), select drop down menu tools either addons (-batch install) to install multiple apps.. or Manage Packages to install single app. There are lots of other functions using droidexplorer but I think most of them need the device to be root.
(it's been a while since I first installed droidexplorer, so I'm not 100% certain if I even needed the android sdk, but HTC SYNC is definitely needed, if someone wants to give it a shot without installing android sdk to verify, that would be great, let me know and I'll fix up this post.)
THIS HAS BEEN VERIFIED TO WORK ON THE STOCK ATT ARIA by myself, as I just purchased the aria on sunday and already installed over 30 apps.
hope this helps someone.. post any replies if you need help, I'll try to help in any way I can.

yep did "adb install swype-installer.apk" Got the "success" - nothing there. The swype installer is now on my phone. Click on it, log in to it, click download - third party deny message.
Also there's no swype on my phone in the downloads, only the swype installer. I figured I might have to do the same thing for the swype installer and swype, but the file isn't there. What exactly does running "install swype-installer.apk" accomplish? I figured it would allow me to download the actual Swype program, and not just the installer.
Tried again in CMD "Install_failed_already_exists"

Worked for me.. using the latest androidiani.. had to apply that LCD density fix for a normal sized ginger keyboard ..
Still thinking swype is the best virtual keyboard though
I can open that zip just fine. But anyways, I downloaded from http://www.droid-life.com/2010/12/06/download-gingerbread-keyboard-for-rooted-devices/ and it worked fine, but still had to do the density fix.
Is this suppose to be multi touch? I hold shift and press a letter and it just toggles Caps...
Since this is just a rip from 2.3, I guess you can't do the feature where they hold Spacebar to switch to another language right? EDIT: Nvm, found it in settings, no language I want to switch to anyways lol
So does this only work on 2.2 ROMs and/or G.O.T.'s 2.2.1 Open Recovery? Or will it work on 2.1 ROMs as well (like the Telus I'm running)?

To anyone who's using this, does this have an "enter" key in portrait mode? I only see a "smiley" in the videos, and I find a line break infinitely more useful than an emoticon.

You're right, that seems like a pretty glaring oversight. Though it won't bother me too much, since in portrait I tend to use the physical keyboard.
*edit*
that actually only seems to be in 'messaging' - try it in browser and it's replaced with a 'GO' button
ugh, it returns to a small keyboard after every restart.
