I have a N1 and its worked fine for a while then i noticed when i turned it on it just stays at the "X" boot up screen.. I have already tried to reset the phone, clear storage, reboot,, and nothing fixes it. What can i do.. i know there has to be a way to load software back onto it or fix whatever is wrong with this thing. please help and thanks for our time.
can you get into the bootloader menu? by holding trackball and power button?
if yes then follow

another app2SD thing after flashing a new rom?
well then you know more then me. If you can get into bootloader you should be able to get into recovery mode. You can also toggle USB mode, so you can be connected to your comp. In that case you can push a recovery image.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611829
you can also wipe
etc
its all in that thread or somewhere else on this forum

Any updates? same thing happened to me.
If in doubt then reflash everything again;
boot
system
and recovery
and start afresh.
see thats the thing,, i can click recovery from the bootloader screen and nothing happens. It will restart and just sit on the same "X" screen. Its very simple to put a phone into a DFU mode or recovery mode for Iphones,Motorolas, blackberry, nokia, samsung,Lg, and a few more i cant think of at the moment. When these phones become corrupt ive learned how to whatever firmware or software i want on dumb thing.. But this HTC is giving me a hard time and i know its something simple.. Most phones have a desktop software that will allow you to mess with phones programming, Itune-iphone/Blackberry-BB desktop Manager/motorola-RSD lite....ect. BUt i cannot find anything really for the HTC or just this N1. A lot of these programs for other brands, once you plug your phone in, will notice that the phone is in a recovery state and offer to do an update or a restore. Now why doesnt the N1 or do they, does google offer something like evryone else does?

The SDK can do that
like the others said, try get into recovery and reflash everything
SDK? i just turned the phone on and its stuck on the "Splash" screen just a big ol "X". I press volume down and power and pull up the bootloader menus.. i scroll down to recovery and press enter. and it reboots and stays at the damn "x" screen again. I've chosen everyone of the options it offers in that menu and nothing changes.. You know how when u first open that menu it will scan the SD card? Well it shows up for a second then goes away, and in the split second the green lettering is on the screen i swear it says "no splash image" or something like that. UHHHHhhhg!
Hmm I forgot how to get to get to recovery using physical buttons, sth like: power + trackball, or volume down + trackball i guess, so try that
So it looks like your phone is not rooted and you don't have Amon_Ra recovery maybe you have not even turned on USB debugger? tough luck friend
All is not lost if you can get into fastboot mode trackball and power together then using adb reflash boot, system and recovery images.
Or call Customer Service and trade in for a new Nexus One
if not you have to download the SDK http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
find stock images and reflash like the above post said

agreed....if you haven't "unlocked" the bootloader then i wouldn't bother with any of the suggestions....Call customer care and get a new one before you un-lock it and this mysteriously happens again...THEN, you'll be S-O-L!!
EDIT: Then with the new one, follow all the threads for un-locking, flashing recovery, nand, flash cyan, flash gapps LALALA
DOUBLE EDIT: Althought it sounds all you've done is messed up the recovery image, which you could re-flash. Then you could get into recovery and flash Cyan, having a functioning phone again

so i know this will confuse many but i need to do a factory reset before sending my phone in to htc for repairs. the problem is that i was unlucky i tripped and fell with my phone in my pocket (screen facing leg) there is superficial damage to the camera cover on the back plate and somehow the screen managed to get cracked on the inside destroying all pixels leaving me with a black screen. however the top glass is unscratched and the digitizer works perfectly fine. so i can use my phone however it is blindly. i have heard of this happening to many other people but i dont know what stance htc is taking on coverage of this flaw. my phone is rooted but i have heard of people still getting warranty coverage on hardware faults. so what i need is screen shots of the main screen with with the options button pressed. then i need a screen shot of the settings menu so i can see the factory reset option then i need a screen shot of the dialog it gives
eg i need screenshot of all of the steps neccessary to do a factory reset plz and thank you all
Just so you know doing a factory reset wont unroot your phone if thats what youre attempting, also if youve flashed another rom I dont think this will work at all. If you still want them though I can do it. Hope they'll fix it for you but I doubt it, dropping the phone or falling with it isnt really a hardware flaw.
well it will unroot it. but i know that it wont relock the bootloader its just that they may accept the policy even if its unlocked if nothing has been loaded on to it at least thats was one persons experience.
and i may be able to get it covered even though the damage was from a fall. i had the phone in its protector in my pocket with the screen facing my leg and it still managed to mess up the screen. that should not have happened.
but yes please the screenshots would be appreciated if there is any chance i can get the phone fixed under warranty i want to try it
What you need to do is flash the stock images to unroot, simply doing a factory reset of a custom rom will not unroot it...
This should be a lot easier, too, since you can fastboot flash the stock images.
I know modaco has all the 100% stock images on his site in ready to flash via fastboot format. Not sure if the link is still on here for them, though.
well now that you say that i can just go download the new firmware cuz itll flash over the root rom i dont know why i didnt think of that guess im just tired lately
edit: just realized ill still need screen caps for the bootloader because i cant see what im doing T_T
Flashing via fastboot is done completely in the cmd screen... no on screen prompts from the phone. All you have to do is boot into fast boot by holding down the trackball while powering on. That puts you in fastboot, then just plug in the USB, open your cmd window from the folder you have fastboot files in, make sure you have the ROM img's in that folder as well, then type in the fastboot commands.
god i hate command line... especially adk but i guess i can do it that way

What phone are you going to be using? All your contacts are backed up to your gmail account, and you can download them in different formats to put them on a sd card and load onto your other phone...
If it is a dumb phone, then yeah you need to copy to your SIM, but we need to know what ROM you are on, and even then it would be pretty hard since your contacts app is going to be in one of many places in the app drawer.
im just on the cyanogen with the root addon its no change to the os at all
edit: i think its called superboot
Do you have the SDK installed on your computer? You could you ddms to take screenshots of your phone and navigate that way.

I am new to the android world, I have a vibrant that I rooted using the update.zip method. Then I went to apply the LAG FIX using the same method from the RyanZA thread. Now all I get is a boot sound and a black screen along with the buttons on the bottom glowing. I have no Idea where to even begin to recover this. I have a mac, any suggestions would be helpful. That's a boot loop. In your case, being new and all, it might be better to re-install the ROM and try again. You might need to give it a while as well, I don't know the details of the zip you used, but it might be copying large amounts of data, which will look like a stall in the boot process.
Get ADB and open a terminal window and do "adb logcat" it should let you know where you are stuck in the boot. Post the log and someone here should be able to help you.
Also, get boot camp and/or Virtualbox going so you can use Odin, which requires Windows. If you mess something up, you can use Odin to get back to a stock setup. Sucks that it requires Windows, but that's just how it is for now.
Oppps mis-read this phone is complete black no noise just heat

Had the same problem when I tried to install that FixLag update.zip. Lucky for me, I did an Anroid Backup before I attempt it.
Hold down Vol+ & Vol- and power it up, do a Wipe.. when its done, restart your phone. When its booting up, its gonna act the same without the Tmobile Flash and still missing the Samsung Galaxy S logo. Just wait for your phone to VIBRATE. Then your phone should be working. I dont know what happen in that update.zip but it deleted the Graphic at the beginning when you first boot up your phone. After that I went back and did a Recovery and got everything back too normal.

I just did this to my phone like the ones stated above..... Blank screen then vibrate and im in the Android OS and it changed the Audio but still no graphics....... Kinda disapointing but until someone finds hwo to actually finx this I'm stuck.
So my Vibrant has been turning off randomly. I think its because of the loose battery or maybe it's just over-heating. But a few days ago, after turning it on there is only a black screen and lit capacitive buttons at the bottom.
It boots up normal, with the vibrant name, t-mobile animation, and the Galaxy S boot animation, then black screen! This started to happen after a few reboots, and now it won't rebbot properly, just black screen. It seems like I have to restore my phone, but the problem is I cannot get the phone into recovery or download mode! Please advise.

First of all, there's no such thing as semi brick, there's brick or not. Try installing your Rom again..
Dan0zone don't be rude man,.backup your apps, enter recovery more delete all user data, if after that you have the same problem restore, or keep trying to enter download mode, try different methods

Do this bro... just tested it myself, works fine...
get adb installed on your computer, should already have it if your rooting but if not get it, youll find it in the stickied thread for informative links in the development section.
get a cmd prompt open on your computer and type in
>adb devices
let it start up deamon and it will tell you device not found, its ok.
now type and have ready...
>adb reboot recovery (do NOT press enter yet)
start your phone like normal. before its even finished with the boot up tmobile animation and the galaxy s (but after the plain vibrant text/picture) logo press enter. if it says error: device not found then wait all the way till galaxy s only you did it too early...
screen will go black and reboot into standard recovery... hope to goodness you had a working clockwork recovery installed and nandroid ready for this next part...
go down using your volume keys and select reinstall packages using the power key
now in clockwork recovery go down to nandroid
now go to restore
go to your earliest back up and restore it.
there you go.
I would start fresh get odin set up and reinstall the original rom at this point as something may still be corrupted, reroot, install latest clockworkmod, latest vibrant 9 rom (im using and see no bugs and runs better then the vibrant 6 rom i had) and DONT install the lag fix until the newest "TRUE" lag fix comes out with the new file system and kernel that JAC is working on and has almost ready.
good luck and pm me if any of these steps need further explanation.

hes just stated man that he cant even get into recovery, my guess is hes locked out using the volume up/down keys like many new phones are (which btw is a known defect, spend 10min on the phone with tmobile doing thier trouble shooting to show them it doesnt work and they send you a replacement..) sooooo I gave him a way to get into recovery without the buttons and not having to wait till he gets to a black screen where possibly its frozen and he cant use adb commands.
I was just making mention to you also that he cant even back stuff up NOW (hopefully he already archived all his apps and data) and hes better off starting fresh since hes getting problems using his current rom/lagfix....
Thanks for the quick reply p()()pypants, but i will have to try your method later. It's late and I have class (college) tomorrow, but i will post my results soon. Thank you again.
Edit 1:
Btw, is there a way to back up my current rom? Like the way rom manager back up roms? I know my current rom works before so that's why I want to back it up.
Edit 2:
Actually i did not use adb to root my phone, just used the one click method. So can you please give me more detailed instructions on how to install/use adb?
Okay, I typed in "adb reboot recovery" and press enter as my phone booted up during the t-mobile animation and at the Galaxy S boot animation. Neither time work. Then I reentered it again after the black screen. That did not work either. CMD keeps on returning "error: device not found" and the phone stays on with the black screen.

Do you have the right drivers installed? You can check here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
Another very stupid question, just to cover all bases - your phone is plugged into the computer, correct? When you install the new drivers, try plugging the phone into a different USB port on the computer than you've been using, so it will hopefully pick up the new drivers without much extra effort.
If that doesn't help, just keep trying the command while the phone boots up. Maybe you'll get lucky and it will work. Sorry I don't have any real solution for you :\
I'm fairly sure I have the right drivers, otherwise I wouldn't be able to root in the first place. Yes, the phone is plugged in also. I'll try a different USB port and see what happens...
Update: Trying different USB ports does not help.
I hope someone can help me. I've been scouring the blogs but couldn't find anything that could help me and I'm stuck. I have a mytouch 3g slide and all of a sudden it keeps rebooting and won't turn completely on...it just keeps rebooting non-stop. I tried taking out the battery overnight and putting it back in, held the volume down button + power button which brought me to the HBOOT screen and only showed FASTBOOT, RECOVERY, CLEAR STORAGE & SIMLOCK. When I tried clicking on RECOVERY it just reboots my phone and does it over and over again, same thing when I do CLEAR STORAGE. I've tried this both with the SD card in and out and it would still not take me to where there's the red triangle...just keeps rebooting. Everything else I've seen on forums tells me to unroot/reroot, reformat, flash etc but since whatever I do it just reboots I can't do it. Other details of my phone are the following:

It sounds as if your phone is toast... however, you could try going to the HTCdev.com site and doing the unlock procedure (which is going to require you to enter fastboot, so if that's not working, you're truly toast).
Once you've got that done, you can then flash a new recovery, like clockworkmod, and see if you can then use that to clear storage, or flash a new ROM.
Alternatively, you could try to just reinstall the froyo update from T-Mobile/HTC.
Thanks

Thanks for the help, jonnycat26. I really appreciate it. It does seem my phone is pretty much toast I tried unlocking it as you said but you're right, it won't let me enter fastboot and my PC couldn't detect the phone since it won't turn on.
I was wondering though, would you happen to have any idea what caused this? It would be good to know so I don't make the same mistake next time around. Thanks again!
Wait! Your phone isn't toast! Download the RUU from the htc website, run it on windows, take the rom.zip from %TEMP%, rename it to ESPRIMG.zip and put it on your sdcard, then boot into Hboot, and it'll reflash the system.

Hi Hitorijanae,
Okay I'm not sure if I did it right. I saved it to my sdcard as ESPRIMG.zip as you said and then did the volume down + power thing and it brought me to the screen with the 3 androids (sorry not quite sure if that's the HBOOT page that you were talking about). Anyway it did the SD checking. Does it make a difference if it says [ESPRDIAG.zip] no image or wrong image? Anyway it loaded up the ESPRIMG.zip and then asked me if I wanted to update it and I said yes. After that it asked if I wanted to reboot and when I said yes it just rebooted over and over again like my previous problem. I tried also choosing no and it brought me back to HBOOT and my only options were FASTBOOT, RECOVERY, CLEAR STORAGE & SIMLOCK. Choosing FASTBOOT just brings me to reload bootloader, etc.; choosing RECOVERY my phone just reboot loops again and same if I choose CLEAR STORAGE.
I'm not sure if I'm doing it wrong or just screwing it up even more. Sorry for all the questions but I keep getting stuck. I would appreciate all the help I can get.

When I do that it only says -waiting on device- and nothing else. I tried doing the unlock bootloader thing but when it comes to the part after I type in fastboot oem get_identifier_token it just says waiting on device as well. Any other suggestions? I had my phone checked and it was a hardware problem so they had to open it up and stuff and now it's all good but I have to be extra careful not to drop or accidentally hit my phone or else it's screwed again. I just wanted to thank you for all your help though
Do you know what was the issue? (Loose cable, failed component, etc)

The guy said it was a hardware issue. Something broke off inside and damaged the memory (I accidentally dropped my phone a few days before my phone went bonkers on me). I wish I could explain it better but for the life of me I can't remember the things the guy said right now but he had to open it up and weld the broken bit back together.

Solder, not weld, but I understand completely. I had to replace the power button and digitizer on mine.

LOL! Yeah, goes to show you how much I know about this stuff I just have to be extra careful with my phone...I hope it holds up for a bit longer.
So i was trying the new beta for PA android and when i was on recovery wiping as usual, the wipe process just froze there for a while, i decided to leave it till it worked again but to no avail it didnt budge at all, so i commited the ultimate sin, and powered it off by holding the power button...
when i tried again tu turn it on the tablet would go thru the google with the padlock screen and then show me a black screen with a little logo of clockworkmod and a version number below, the screen itself has no use since no matter what button i press it does nothing, other than that the tablet keeps rebooting after that.
when i try any combination of buttons to access either the real recovery or the bootloader the tablet just plain ignores that im trying to turn it on, just doesnt work, it just turns on if im not pressing anything besides the power button.
to sum up to all my problems i would love to keep trying and see if at anypoint it will turn to bootloader, i havent seen the notification of the tablet being charged... meaning that i dont know if it has enough battery to last me the remaning ideas i had.
So in a nutshell
-no bootloader
-no fastboot
-no recovery
-cant tell if battery or not
Please if anyone knows how to fix or at least get me to a bootloader i would fix everything else, but i really need the guidance here
Have you tried another charger and cable? A simple idea, but not one to over look.
Without bootloader menu or recovery, not much you can do. I'd work on getting into one of those first. Not much you can do until then.

Are you able to get adb to recognize the device with "adb devices"?

Yeah ive tried 4 other chargers, and nothing new, i know that the os itself takes care of the charging as does the recovery in some cases, but since i have non i dont know if its gonna charge at all or not and trying doesnt sound really appealing since i should save battery in case theres a solution and needs battery power
but thanks for the answer

Dont really know how to check, i mean i could get into the tools and try the command Adb Devices but how should i even begin to test? i mean shouldnt i be in a adb static platform on the device? if i try to get into bootloader it just doesnt turn on, and when it does it goes straight to the black screen with the clockworkmod symbol and numbers
Thanks for the answer

if you have enough battery and can get pc to see is thru adb. you may be able to fastboot a new rom onto the device. You can from pc Request device to go into bootloader or fast boot from the PC..
This is your only shot.. I Would suggest borrow a friends Nexus 7 Full Battery . If you do not know how to do any of this . Use skips root kit and use the unbrick or factory reset. it will force your device into fast boot and flash a new rom.
Good Luck

yeh i know how to use the skip toolkit, yet i hope i have enough battery for the test, because the only friend that i know owns a nexus 7 left the country a few months back, so the battery sounds like its gonna be hard to get. Anyways, as u were saying theres a posibility that while the tablet is rebooting and rebooting it might be able to be found on the adb devices? and use the fastboot, cuz if thats true u would be the hero ive been waiting for...
imma check and tell u later,
thanks for the answer
