Hello all, I read all the posts about how to root HTC Hero (Poland Era G2) but I still do not know which method is the simplest. I depend mostly to BT to work normally. Could someone give me links to the topics. Because I have already lost in this. Thanks
the simplest way is pick one of them and try it, instead of looking through all of them

The fact you say you need bluetooth to work normally, in relation to rooting your device, suggests maybe a misconception on your part, so I'm writing this just in case that is true.
The method you use to root your phone won't determine what features it supports or how reliable it is. Once you root your phone, using any method you can find which works for you, you can install a custom recovery image (current AmonRa recommended).
When that's done you're then free to choose any custom gsm Hero ROM you like & that is what will determine the features & reliability of the device. It's also fairly easy to swap between ROMs so you can try several & very easy to revert to one you've already tried (& backed up via nandroid backup, a feature of the recovery image).
So it's okay to plunge in & try the various rooting methods, though obviously do follow the instructions carefully. I think theunlockr.com has some good video guides if you prefer video to the written word. Just google 'unlockr htc hero rooting'.
Argh, just realised the original post is two months old. Oh well. If you're reading do post back to say if you managed.

Hi there everyone!
I'm using my G1 (german, T-Mobile branded) some months now and till latelty did not bother about rooting.
Now I found Bluex, which implements a function I was missing badly: Bluetooth OBEX. But receiving files is only possible with root.
This and Apps2SD are enough appetizers for me to get root. I plan on sticking to this guide but instead of using one of the linked ROMs I want to install "JFV1.51 CRB43 EU" from his Blog.
Now I got some questions, which hopefully will be answered by ono of you.
I guess the radio update should be the same as the US build?
Do you think this ROM is a good choice for my two prerequisites (Root and Apps2SD)?
Since this is my first root attempt, do you think that guide is OK for a generally tech savvy person?

Thanks for your quick replies! I think I would also succeed at the goldcard method. Being a programmer, a hexeditor etc. are not such unusual tools ;-)
But since it is more complex and thus probably also more time consuming I would like to know if there are any big davantages in using a goldcard.

I rooted my phone succesfully using the goldcard method (didn't try the other one) and am now writing from JF 1.51 EU w/ DxTop ;-)
AppsToSD is also working with only one problem. When I install private apps like Bluex or Snap Photo Pro they FC on me. They even don't have there icons and most times do not show up on the App dock.
Does any of you have ahint for me? Unfortunately I did not try any of those apps before setting up AppsToSD 2.

No, you can use both methods! With the GoldCard you can easy root other G1s. But if you just want to root one phone it doesn't mater.
Thanks for the heads-up, linulli. But as stated before I already succefully rooted my phone. I just got some issues with paid apps...
Is there anyway to return the phone back to stock condition.

Good Noob site.
I've done most all the tutorials on that site and been pretty successful in rooting and unrooting. Use his One Click Root Procedure and use the recovery he has there it's a lot better than the old ones. He has a really good download section on there for any ROM's you might want and themes. I use Cyanogen's ROM it's really fast and doesn't make your screen all blurry or anything. I was pretty nervous about rooting my phone at first, but if you can install an operating system on a computer you definitely won't have any problems rooting your phone and installing a new ROM. I've flashed and flashed and unrooted and installed themes and haven't bricked my phone yet. I'm not a programmer or a genius by any means and I didn't break my phone yet.

One is the fact that they are constantly delaying the new firmware and the second is that my battery life has gotten worse and I've tried all that I can to fix it. The third thing is the lag that can happen, especially when I want to make calls, can be frustrating. So I've heard about the use of custom ROMS and I feel like finally transitioning over to them. What I want to know is what exactly I have to do in order to be able to load up a custom ROM? This might be a noobish question but the last thing I wanna do is brick my phone by making a stupid mistake.

Read the FAQ's and wikis posted at the top of the forum. Once you get passed those you should be able to ask the 'right' questions
Basic steps are:
Root phone
Install recovery image
Flash rom
The wiki has steps for those...and I seriously recommend reading through the thread of whatever ROM you choose.
And before you ask: The choice of ROM is up to you. They all have good points and bad points, so don't create a thread asking which is the best...it's pretty subjective.

I have used the Fresh and Damage ROM's and they are very good. Everything does seem snappier, but I still get the phone keypad lag which is very, very troublesome and not noticeably different from the stock. Others have claim no lag, and so YMMD.
There are many neat things about the modded ROM's, but there doesn't seem to be much to be done about the phone lag. Not good, since first and foremost I expect the Hero to be a *phone*.

Didnt mean to double post but doesnt the first link already cover the second link because I found a nandroid file after rooting
I'm very new to Android (just got an HTC G1 with Android 1.6 from Craigs List) and I was wandering if there is a way to safely upgrade to Android 2.1.

It's perfectly safe if you read and understand all the instructions before you do anything. If there's any part where you aren't 100% sure what you're doing and what the aim of it is, do more research before you press a single key. All the information is in the wiki here (link up top) and the wiki at cyanogenmod.com
One must realize that NOT ALL INSTRUCTIONS are correct. SOME instructions can brick your phone.

HOWEVER, your phone needs to be set up to work with it (the setup is safer for preparing for this than most others).
Installation of 1.33.2005 SPL aka "DEATHSPL" is the most dangerous step anyone puts in their instructions. The above link DOES NOT require 1.33.2005. It works with all SPLs, including all of the "perfectly safe" SPLs -- 0.95.x000 and 1.33.2003.

And to add if you use this SPL.. and then decide that (after more reading debugging ect.) it would be easier to use dangerSPL; its a simple mater of using fastboot to flash 1.33.2005 and any future radios without the risks in most peoples instructions.
Information on 1.33.2003 is in CONFIRMED!! BRICKS: Radio and SPL + New SAFETY theory read a few pages around that post to ensure you understand what you are doing and what you want to install.
The important thing is to understand the importance of compatibility between radio->SPL->recovery if you want to flash these without (most) of the risk..
The other thing is to keep focused when flashing a bootloader (spl) and don't get side tracked, of start flashing other things since you last verified the state of your phone. If you can't do this best stick with what works now.

I absolutely DO NOT RECOMMEND videos.
The processes you need to follow are NOT CONDUCTIVE to being learned through videos and the PEOPLE who make the videos, by and large, are RETARDS.
Unfortunately there isn't a safe method to update G1 to 2.1 ROM. You will have to change SPL and propably a radio and when doing this you can brick phone. However, there is no chance to brick phone other way. You can try to flash as many ROMs as you want, you can do what you want, there is always recovery when you can just wipe and flash a new ROM.

1) while it may take more foot work you can flash a 2.1 rom without spl/radio changes
2) not safe well this depends.. is it safe to walk on a trail next to a cliff without a gaurd rail.. maybe not if you are blind but for most people it is... the problem is many people are blind in the android world.. and thus fall off the cliff.. frequently feeling they did everything correct without realizing they forgot the most important part..

I want to root my Desire Z as I would like to use Titanium Back Up Pro. I have checked thru the threads here. And, well, I am totally confused.
On TheRomMistress's great sticky there are 27 guides with at least 11 dealing with rooting the phone. Some of these guides refer you to other guides and these refer you to yet more guides for various reasons (updates etc).
I know a lot of the guides were initially worked out before the whole NAND lock was cleared up.
So my question is which guide should a noob follow to get root?
I love the whole android experience, love Sense and think my phone is all shiny, sparkly etc. I may want at a later stage to try out some of the other ROMs but so far I really love stock (heck, my previous phone was a windows 2003 Magician with BigStorage courtesy of XDA!!). I just want to be able to back it up.

worked well once i had reset my phone and made sure my sd card was clean. Read up on adb before you attempt though so you know what is happening at each stage, it makes the whole process easier. And if things don't work as expected you'll be able to sort it.
The method listed in the official Wiki is the one recommended by most people nowadays: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#OTA_Updates.
It is generally considered the "safe" way to attempt root at this point. There were reports of semi-bricks caused by the permroot function in Visionary so general consensus is not to use it. For other guides (such as the one linked to earlier), if you have a typo while flashing the engineering HBOOT, you could cause a semi-brick as well (though if you follow the instructions carefully, it shouldn't be a problem).
A typo with the Wiki method shouldn't lead to a semi-brick though. It also has the added benefits of not only giving you root, but also true radio S-OFF, SuperCID, and subsidy unlock (if your phone was originally locked to a specific carrier).
That being said, as long as you read carefully and follow instructions, you should be fine following most any of the guides.
