Copilot and the Twilight Zone! - HD2 General

After many hours struggling to get Copilot 8 working I have made the following strange discovery: It works perfectly anywhere except in my house. In the house I get a clear satellite signal, it locates me perfectly but if I input a destination it crashes out every time and generates a Microsoft report the error report. Once I leave the house and go anywhere else it works like a dream. Can anyone explain??

91x GPS Accelerator Problems...?

Howdy,
Just wondering how many other people here have problems updating their GPS info using HP's iPAQ GPS QK Position program?
I either get a message that the "GPS data has downloaded successfully", or that the file is expired. Only maybe once in 500 tries do I actually get updated info.
Do we know where this data is stored or collected from? Could we add it in manually? Is there an alternative program to update the co-ordinate information?
It's very frustrating to have to wait 12 minutes for my GPS to lock on (or time-out in the case of Google Maps) because this application is broken.
GPS just sux...
Every cooked version as well as the 91x ROM's from HP have never had the GPS work fast for me. I often time end up at my destination before the GPS has figured out where I am.
However, I have noticed that the GPS chip is very sensitive to interference. Just having it sit on my lap while I'm driving and trying to get a GPS signal will usually make it NOT be able to lock. I have to set it on the dash in order for it to get a signal with any speed what-so-ever.
Don't know of anyone elses experience but I know my GPS blows the big one.
Works good. I use a Wi-Fi connection.
Never seen a problem like you described in your post.
Works Great
Hi, i don't know what the problem is... Works great for me. With the car stopped takes less than a minute to fix. On the move less tan 3 mins. Normally don't need GPS to drive 3 mins, lol. Im very satisfied.
GPS on my iPaq never worked for me...
iphone got faster lock and works just fine, iPaq simply never lock... never...
so i simply gave up on the gps of the ipaq 914
The issue with with the accelerator program. When I can finally get valid data, a GPS lock takes about a minute. But when I can't get the update to work, it takes 8-12 minutes, if it locks at all.
What I'm looking for is confirmation that people don't have a problem updating with the GPS QK program.

GPS - Software, Performance

Now that Verizon finally has unlocked the GPS on a new device, I am curious about what navigation software and performance everyone is seeing. I tried TomTom 7 on my Imagio and it is lagging about 10 seconds. I haven't had time to really give it a good test, however it was a little concerning. How is your GPS working for you?
Same with me, Navigator is too laggy to work. I've installed Nav4All (free at nav4all.com) and it works great but is very rudimentary.
Goggle Maps works fine but not TTS so the search continues...
Interesting, I was using version ttn7.915.9196 for the record. I saw somewhere that there is a newer version for the TP2 out but i think it only added the ability to use the keyboard. I noticed that on the TomTom sight it only shows the Iphone edition I wonder if they are tweaking it for the new rev of WM phone. I think i might buy Copilot 8 if we can't find a fix considering its only something like $35.
Copilot 8 works great!
I use Ostia from pharosgps.com.
It was lightning fast to locate me, compared to using my old Tilt.
This is my third phone using Ostia and have to say currently liking it best.

You must first use HTCs Quick GPS. It speeds up the lock on the satellites. Google maps finds my location within seconds and Bing in less than a minute

Is QuickGPS a memory hog? And is it always on? I'm a little afraid to install it.
In the meantime, I have always like Garmin software. Garmin XT works very well on the Imagio. I got it off of ebay for about $25. It's also got lots of connected services, like nearby gas prices, flight times, google search, weather etc.
no quick gps isn't a memory hog and should already be on your device. The way it works is:
The GPS chip receives a synchronized timed signal from the satellites (birds) the US DoD launched into orbit. Each bird uses a different channel. With a good signal from three or more birds, GPS starts to get a fix. It does this by calculating the time difference between the reception of the different signals, then calculating the relative distances to each of the birds, then figuring out where it sits in the middle of the birds.
The GPS calculates four spheres, and its located somewhere on the surface of each of these spheres. There is only one point where these four spheres intersect. That's you.
If you're good at geometry, you might think that it needs 4 birds to get a fix, but in fact, if the GPS assumes that you are on earth, that provides another sphere, so it only requires 3 birds to get a decent fix. More adds altitude and accuracy.
But the GPS needs to know where each of the birds is before it can decide where IT is. That information is not calculated, but is available in a detailed download of orbital data provided by the DoD called ephemeris data. It is transmitted...from the bird to your GPS. For a cold start, your GPS needs to download the entire file, without interruptions in the signal - BEFORE it can even start getting a fix. In fact, the GPS may not even know which channels to tune into, since it doesn't yet know which birds are currently overhead. This causes a slow first fix.
Quick GPS, is simple. Ephemeris data is passed thru WiFi or cellular data connection ahead of time, and you never have to wait for it to download over the satellite. Awesome.

I'm using IGo8 and it works perfectly.
I'v been happy with Bing for Maps/Turn-by-Turn GPS, with the bigger screen of the Imagio it's more than adequate for my needs. It also has gas prices, movies, and speech recognition which is very nice. Use Quick GPS to cache satellite info and it locks very quickly after that.

I was confused, when I opened up QuickGPS, it said "Download", so I assumed it was like the Windows Marketplace icon, and that you actually had to download the program first. I was wrong- download means download GPS Data.

Correct, and it will auto-close after as it's not needed to stay running to work, just download cache files and exit.
Give it a try it has always worked will for me
IGO 8 is by far the best navigation software takes some tweaking to get it to work but if you do some searching you can find what your looking for on the net. Garmin XT uses a bit less program memory and still works well but not near as slick as IGO. Make sure you use latest possible release and maps.
Is it Igo 8 or OnCourse 8 in the US. I went to the site and found it a little confusing. Looked pretty nice either way.
Can't get Tomtom to work
On the topic of GPS programs, I have used Tomtom Navigator 6 (purchased version) for some time. Worked great on my AT&T fuze, but when I tried to install it on the imagio, it looks like everything is smooshed to the top of the screen, and is unusable. I contacted Tomtom, but they replied simply that it was an unsupported phone. I guess I'll have to try a different program. Anybody else had issues?

I've been using TomTom for years too. On my PDA's and winmo phones. I didn't install it on the Imagio because I was going to get the latest maps from TomTom and see if they had any software updates. But all they have on their site now is iPhone and zip for winmo, so it looked to me like they were dropping windows support, so I dropped them.
I can get by with Google Maps and/or Windows Live Search (Bing) - and for turn by turn I'm now using the $35 CoPilot 8. Works real well, but I have very limited time on it so far.
I was going to switch to Garmin XT, but you need a completely dedicated microSD for that - that's a deal breaker.
My friend installed wm 6.5 on his wing and he is having a similar problem with TOMTOM being very laggy. I think its a wm 6.5 issue and not and Imagio!

so I bought a htc hd2 using it to type this, however gps wont lock (and kb Really is bad lol) im on o2

Re gps won't find anything
Hi,
A couple of questions. What software are you using? (like Google Maps). You say you can't get a lock, are you able to access any satellite? Have you selected Google Maps Use GPS Option. Have you enabled QuickGPS (Start/Tools/QuickGPS). There is a setting there to let you download Satellite data using your PC connection during Activesync which might help you if you have data issues.
Now, silly question, are you indoors or outdoors when you are trying to get a fix?. Im not always able to get a satellite fix from my living room).
Regards.

sorry took so long to reply (keyboard really has issues ... or maybe i have the issues and just cant use it) so i came to pc to reply.
i was indoors at the time (trying to show my gf how great my phone is and shes with her iphone getting a gps location in seconds) so i was indoors , i have tried outside however and it dont seem to work, i had the same (and still do) with my xda ignito and just give up on it , but this is a new phone and i just want to be able to sit in my house and go oooh phone says im here haha.
i used quickgps however that has not helped
LOL, knowing that you couldn't get it working on your other phone might have helped in your original posting . Have you talked to O2?
gps does not care about the carrier...
BTW: What the iphone does (and your phone can do too) is the self positining using the google api. that works over the cellular network, using a table of positions where the antennas are lokated and not gps!
GPS indoors is not possible with a antenna like the HD2 or the Iphone has, aslong as you live in a "normal house" and not in some weird mobile home ect...
If it cant get a fix using google maps or tomtom outside of your house within 2minutes of not moving somewhere on the street, or the gps tuner did not even find one satellite, think of hard-resetting your phone and then try again.
if you sill can find anything your antenna might be broken so you need to return your phone to warrenty and get a new one, or yours fixed!

Intereseting, I've never actually seen a phone using nagigation software without data services from a carrier. I must live a really sheltered life. Good luck.
Usually, every GPS phone has trouble locking from inside houses, with the exception of when you are standing next to a window sometimes. My HD2 however locks in seconds when outside.
I would suggest running QuickGPS (or something along those lines) from Start->Tools, it updates the locations of the satellites so the GPS takes less to locate them when locking.
All the best,
shpatar.

what are you talking about? tomtom, garmin etc. never use the carrier to get a fixed gps position. thats why you call it gps, because it uses it and gps is not run by any phone carrier but by the us. forces... so you dont need any dataservice or even simcard to get your gps position with your gps-enabled phone...

Are you using igo8? I know i had to manually set the correct com port (COM4) within igo settings before it would work.
Also you can manually set it in google maps. Try setting it to COM4 baud rate of 4800
The carrier locating in my area is useless when i am inside my house. Says i am like a mile away in the middle of a field! lol.

As others have replied- the iPhone uses a different method of getting your position, as its GPS receiver is pretty poor (which is why TomTom needs its own GPS receiver in a dedicated cradle to work properly )
The HD2 has the best GPS receiver I've yet seen in a mobile device- no longer than 1 minute even from cold start in most cases- and I've used it in UK, Italy and Slovenia in the last 6 weeks. However, if you are indoors it will struggle.
Which software are you using to try and get a fix? Maybe it isn't initiating the GPS correctly.
The Ignito is also pretty good, so maybe you are in a 'dead' area? Have you tried in a different location?

i said what network i was on to imply what rom i was on (was first day with hd2 and i was typing using it .. and i wanted to make it as small as possible - hate the kb lol)

i got a signal once since i started this when outside after about 20 mins.
i understand what you mean with regards to cell network etc and obviously that works fine .. however gps seems to not like me

I'm not in OLDHAM!!!!!! (Weather tab question)

Hi all,
I was just wondering if anyone knew why my Weather tab has suddenly started mis-reporting my location as Oldham. I'm actually a few miles away. Up until recently it always found and reported the location of my fairly small home town accurately, and worked great elsewhere too.
Now however, it keeps defaulting to Oldham. It also sometimes says Rochdale, or occasionally Manchester. These are inaccurate too. Just a couple of weeks ago it always got my location right, but now it hardly ever does. It seems to have suddenly lost its ability to pinpoint my location, so simply defaults to a nearby large town or city, despite the fact I'm miles away from them.
Incidentally, the four dots around the GPS logo (next to the name of My Location) no longer 'gyrate' while updating. They used to rotate in a 'wobbly' orbit around the globe logo in the centre, presumably to indicate GPS activity. Now they just spin in a fixed orbit around the central point (GPS still works fine in TomTom7 and Google Maps etc).
I have Location Service enabled, and allow it to gather data on my location at any time. The problem remains the same whether I'm connected via WiFi or HSDPA, or both.
Does My Location actually use GPS, or just cell towers? Like I said, it worked fine up until recently. I know people have had various problems with the Weather tab, but I can't find anyone with this exact problem on here. Any advice would be gratefully received.
Thanks,
Rob.
Mate, the GPS is the least of your worries. If Oldham is the nearest place of interest to you, you should move home!

But on a serious note, weather worked fine for me, until one day I did a hard reset.
Now I have not once had the correct location at home.
Weird ay?
I suspect that your weather location is tied to your local cell.
GF is on t-mob and I'm on O2, our HD2s regularly report our local weather location as being in different places even though we're both on the same sofa, my guess is that it depends on which cell signal is strongest, maybe your local one is temporarily down?

That's my point; Oldham ISN'T my nearest town, but the damn phone keeps sticking it on my Weather tab anyway. My phone has never even been to Oldham!
My Desk in work officially sits between Brockworth and Hucclecoat. I get different locations at each side of my desk. It does sound like its a cell tower problem to me.
Yup depending where i am in town i get either north lincolnshire or appleby its very annoying
it doesn't use gps...uses information from the cell tower your phone is currently using. If that cell tower is labelled Oldham, then that's what you'll get.
I get saddleworth most of the time. I got tameside once which would be better
if i am getting hsdpa signal it's correct if i get 3g signal it reports wrong location.
Same here. I often get Poplar when I'm travelling through Hackney.
I experienced the same problem. It's weird that when I use Wifi, the location is about 30 miles away from where I am. But using 3g, it points to a couple miles away which is acceptable
here is one for you.. lmao
If I am upstairs at my computer I get Richmond, if I am in the guest room dirrectly below my desk down stairs, im in Preston. now if I force it to update, im in Smithfield until I get back to my computer and wait 15 minutes were I am once again, back in Richmond...
at leasts yours works, my location hasnt worked in the 2 months i had the hd2 works fine on my hero lolol

Funny, it's the other way round for me - it's generally accurate if I'm getting a 3G connection, but when it's HSDPA (most of the time) it usually shows up wrong (I'm on T-Mobile).
Anyway, thanks all for the replies. Nice to know it isn't a fault on my handset at least. Doesn't sound like there's much we can do about it though.
Cheers,
Rob.

It'll depend on which cell it's connecting to then. It's probably connecting to an H-enabled tower which is in Glamorous Oldham, and the fallback cell is just 3G/GPRS and closer to home.
i have the same issue, somethings its ok and recognises my location as swindon but in my house it says im in wroughton which is a small village about 5 miles away.
I had a problem like this, but mine was 100 or so miles out.
I found out it was to do with where my time settings were.
I chose manchester (closest major city [and home city for me]) for my time.
So it made the weather show manchester as my location.
now i've changed the time to my location, its the same in weather.
dont know how much use that is to you, worked for me though.

Igo problems!!

I work in edmonds, wa and it is really getting annoying that igo cannot recognize the major highway in my city. When i go to find address and try to input hwy 99 it simply does not recognize this. Is this a problem with igo or the teleatlas maps i'm using? Would the Navteq maps be any better?
Also, I'm currently running igo at this very moment, and my screen is "flashing" on and off. While i was driving earlier on the freeway, the screen turned off and voice announced "gps disconnected" and it didn't reconnect.
If there is anyway to fix these problems help is much appreciated...
uninstall igo.
go into igo8 on your SD card and delete save
save is the user info. this will force the igo8 to reinstall again. if you recently flashed a rom, it can cause problems with igo8.
hope this helps. you can dump igo and run garmin or run both like me!
Just run your search on here to make sure that the address is correct and in the system. http://www.navteq.com/

So is "hwy 99" valid? Is it not "Highway 99" and is "Highway 99" really a valid destination? For example here, Interestate 75 would not be a valid destination because there's no 'addresses' there, only cross-streets. Honestly never tried to route to it in iGO, but something to consider..
I primarily use Waze + common sense (since it's not routing well for most places yet due to the data they have), and a TomTom One when I really need routing. I gave up on running TomTom or iGO in my Tilt 2. They work fine, but make the phone overheat unless you keep the AC on and aren't all that robust.. iGO crashes randomly, TomTom less so but it's no better than my TomTom One I got for $50.
So i think i found a way to keep the screen on and the gps connected. I went to settings-device-power management and selected "always on". Do you other igo users have it setup this way as well?
Regarding the address problems. Yes, hwy 99 is definately a valid destination. My only concern is if it doesn't recognize hwy 99, i wonder how many other addresses it won't recognize. Again, does anyone using igo notice differences between the tele atlas and navteq maps?
Does HWY 99 have an alternate name? For example, I95 here in Virginia is also known as Shirley G Memorial Highway...I did look up Redmond WA on my Igo and did search fo 99...couldn't find it, just a named (not numbered) highway.
Using the navteq tool that rory posted, I was able to search/find several address along highway 99 in edmonds, including the Red Dragon Casino at 21917 Hwy 99
Edmonds, Washington 98036
So, any navteq-based solution would be able to find you addresses there

well my real intention was just confirm that "highway 99" is the true "addressable" name for that piece of blacktop...but yeah, it does sorta point to the fact that igo may not be the best option for you, no matter what else you end up with
