AT&T 3G Vs. T-Mobile 3G - Nexus One General

Just did a speed test vs. the IPhone and Nexus One using the same Speedtest app found off of their markets. This is just to compare data speed not to diss on the IPhone dispite the intense dislike I have for it, the test was fair and balanced. As a final note both phones showed full signal.

Very interesting. My friends with iPhones have always complained about the AT&T network, they too experience unbearably slow speeds, congestion and dropped calls on AT&T.

Wow I get better speeds on edge sometimes. Atleast better than the three lowest results.

i did a speedtest on mine- i got 261 kbps down/285 kbps up. is that good, im not to familiar with speeds.

To the OP, i hate you for being in an area with 7.2mb. while here in L.A i cap out at 1.8mb. Althought a Tmobile Rep i know from working retail told me he couldn't tell me when i asked him about no 7.2 in LA, then mentioned something about march-june to look for speed increases. Although i don't think he really understood what he was talking about I think he confused HSPA 7.2 with HSPA+. he kept mentioning HSPA+ and it being blazing fast and how people are tethering an d Tmobile doesn't care. he also did mention something about current phones being compatible with HSPA+, just requiring an update, which again leads me to believe he confused HSPA+ with HSPA7.2

To play Devil's Advocate, this entirely depends on the location you're in. Some people are in areas where T-Mobile sucks and AT&T beats any other US carrier.
What's more impressive is comparing the screen quality of both phones in that picture. The iPhone's screen looks absolutely disgusting.
Also, what skin protector is that on your N1?

It's roughly equivalent to the Zagg N1 full body cover, just got it from a booth at the mall. I've seen the Zagg N1 cover and I think they cut out the panels a bit better.

I have a Zagg cover from the Invisible Shield mall cart and it looks just like yours. i really really really liked the matte finish on the N1, im really disliking the glossy look with the invisible shield.

Wow, the iphone 3G speeds do look like just Edge...sure glad I'm w/tmob!

I never go over 1mbps in full 3g coverage (at home)

I wish I could see speeds even half those on T-mobile. I've never gotten more than 800ish kbps with my G1 or 600ish kbps with the N1.

hey umm.. im in a crappy tmo area and im getting about 400 to 600 kbps speeds on my n1.
when i used to have my tp2 i was getting about 1k at the same places now im getting half the speed.
any ideas??

lol, my nexus on ATT edge was just about as fast(and far more consistent) as it is on tmobile 3g here.

Wow! The Vibrant does well on AT&T :)

I just plugged in my wife's iPhone SIM into the Vibrant to unlock, then ran the SpeedTest.net app.
I got 1209 kbps down and 347 kbps down in West LA.
Not bad, considering that at the same spot I get 400-600 kbps down and 700-1000 kbps up on t-Mobile.
Anyway, it means that the Vibrant can do perfectly adequately internationally.
And in West LA, with the spirent settings removed, the GPS works pretty good too!
Once I get my phone unlocked, I'll post my Canadian TMO Vibrant 3G scores.

How does LA get worse than Columbus, OH? Amount of people on the network?

Nice numbers! How many gma's are surfing the web down there?!
I get anywhere between 500kbps (1 bar) to 1200kbps (5 bars) download, and between 100-300 kbps (1 bar/5 bars respectively)
TMOs 3G is pathetic in this part of town (my home).

no, I used to live in Tampa. Bradenton / Sarasota is the gma's and gpa's
5462/1692, 66 ping. I'm down the street from TMO HQ in factoria washington.
5708/4215 51ms on wifi (comcast)
Ha, test server is in Bellevue up the street. Amusing.
1900MHz carriers are rarely used because AT&T has their network spaced out for 850MHz. 850MHz is probably the most overcrowded and slow.
For the record, 1900 is hardly "international"

the same can be said for AWS
LOL
Yeah T-Mobile either seems to be really fast, or just plain sucky. Luckily I live in a place where it's really fast
The TMO 3G situation at my place is quite amusing. I can get around 1-2mbps from where I am, but if I drive about 2 miles in one direction I'll get 4-5mbps easily. Go the opposite way 2 miles and I am lucky to get 700kbps. Would be great to see the backhaul to the surrounding towers upgraded a bit more.

DI18 fixed 3g upload speeds, but 4g download speed is cut in half!

anyone else in 4G land experiencing the same problem?

Can you do this repeatably? I think this is probably a case of bad sample data. 4G speeds tend to fluctuate *wildly* because of a.) environmental impacts of a 2.5GHz signal (ever tried to measure actual WiFi performance on a laptop over 802.11n? You'll see what I mean - no two tests are remotely the same) and b.) Network congestion, usage, and number of devices, and c.) Signal strength. If you're indoors, don't even think about comparing 4G speeds, as the 2.5GHz frequency is terrible at penetrating buildings.
In order for your claim to be valid, it would be useful to have time-dependent data, and at least say, 10-20 test results. Then, the same after the update would be useful as well. I've seen 4G speeds on my Evo be 400kbit/s one day and 3.9Mbit/s another day, same place. My Epic 4G has given me speeds in excess of 5Mbit, but later tests didn't get the same performance.
I'm not saying that there's no chance you're right, but I'd say that *much* more data is needed. Try it again tomorrow, at different times, in different places. See how it stacks up. I'm just gonna put this as bad data. (Also, reboot your phone just in case you have a data hog running.)
Yeah you really can't tell anything by one or two tests. I just ran three tests and I got download speeds of 6300, 3200 and 5300. Uploads varied from 430kbps to 1300kbps.
I'm in a fairly poor signal area right now but even in good signal areas it can vary a lot. At work I get anywhere from 6000kbps to 9000kbps.
i just did 3 tests as well from inside my room with all but 1 bar and i am also in Brooklyn (a area that has 4g but it's not officially live yet) and my results were...
Download/Upload
7638/1142
6970/1128
8009/1119
I don't know what they were before but speeds like that are just fine for me i think it was just a random mess up for you
My 4g is fine.

This is pretty sad.

So, phone destroys my internet at home. hm.
you know whats worse? I live right in the middle of anahiem, ca with 5 bars at my house, running speedtest....
wow its even worse right now...
469down/1179up
best ive gotten from this location is:
1689down/1226up
Yeah the same thing is happening for me. My phones internet speed is faster than my dsl landline at home but with my landline I know I'm most likely going to receive consistent speeds, my phone's internet occasionally spikes and stops working. All I know is I can stream things off my phone so its always feasible to try watching House before I go to bed w/o having to turn on the laptop.
Lucky for u guys. My house sucks. My dsl is 786kbps unlesd I pay $50 a month for 3mb. Then my 3g/4g signal drops like a fly. So I only get edge at my house but if I go down the street.(about 8 houses over) I get 4-6mb 4g

My phone connection destroys my home DSL connection. I get 1.5 mbps down on my crappy Qwest DSL. On my phone I average around 6 mbps or more. I need to find a better home connection.
I DO pay like 15$ a month for internet so I shouldn't complain haha.
Even after the 5GB soft cap, my cell phone is still quicker than my 1.5mbps dsl...

Hell i wish i could pay $15 can get your speeds i pay $15 with this crap as att and im only getting 786kb max but around 600kb normal. Its this crap ass block on im all the houses are in the stone ages. its either get satellite or cable there is no high speed dsl
and my cell phone if i hold it just right at just the right time in just the right temp i get 3mb. Now if i leave my house and go to the main street i get an easily 7-8mb down

20Mbps vs 4. I must be in the stone age.
Damn, I'm loving my Uni net all of a sudden.
It actually goes a bit faster.. my download speeds vary from 6-10 MB/s.

Town size and internet speed

Alright so after traveling around and experiencing wimax for the first time I came up with an idea.
In smaller towns the speed tests I took showed that they had under the .6 mbps required for 3g. Now the larger towns I was in scored at that mark or above. Now I had to pass through 8 places. Three of which were rather large and one was LA. The other had less than 50k people. To me it seems a lot of slow internet on phones are in the smaller regions.
Now this was just the test on my moat recent trip to the beach but I wkonder if anyone else had this realization.

well san antonio isnt exactly a small town and i still see sub 56k speeds most of the time.
the small towns in the hill country out here are the places where you can get decent 3g speed lol.

Ahhh well it is just the things I've noticed. Always getvbetter speeds when I go to a bigger town. In my town we have 30k people and I see needs fmof .3 mbps all the time , and answer thing with the towns I went through. Maybe its must my area
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
It depends on how close you are to a(n internet) backbone as well as what speedtest server you are using. One of the internets major hubs is in LA so you should see pretty decent speeds there while some towns further out may have a ways to go before they can even get on the main part of the internet.
Think of it like one person living a block away from the interstate while another has to take side roads to get there.
edit: I got curious and found a newer map of Sprint's network. This should give you a pretty good idea of where you might get better speeds, just keep in there are a lot of other factors that can affect it too.

i do live in the middle of no where though.. might have something to do with it.
State capital of LA here. Below 50 kilobit is the norm in town. If I head out to fringe areas I can get 800-1000. I roam on VZW 3g quite a lot.
I live in a town of 5k people, about 25 miles east of Houston TX. I used to have AWESOME 3G speeds, up until about a month ago. Not exactly sure what happened, my thoughts are sprint used to use a Verizon town a few miles from my house and now it doesn't. I went to a Verizon PRL and speeds are back up

I finally experienced LTE Speed - ATT - AWESOME

I was in NYC yesterday and for the first time I saw the LTE lit up under the 4G.
Kicked up Speedtest app and ran it.
It was unreal needle burried at 20 mg! Final reading (5 run average) was 22.6 down
and 5.6 up. This is manhattan Times Square around 3 in the afternoon where everyone
is on their phone. Thats outstanding.
Before my ATT SG3 I had an International SGS2 and the quickest I have ever seen
was 4.7 down and 1.6 up. What a difference.
4 G was just activated in my home area in PA. Ran the speedtest here and I am pleasantly
surprised. Final reading (again 5 read average) 9.3 mb down 2.4 mb up.
I am loving this phone!

Running those speed test eat up your data! Be careful unless u have unlimited
Blazing Galaxy S3
Even if he has unlimited, he will be throttled after 5gb thanks to ATT's recent policies.

Yes I know, I have the unlimited plan so I am ok.....

Yeah. I'm hoping that Columbus (the 15th largest city in the US) gets LTE soon.
For some reason AT&T decided to rollout in Cleveland/Akron/Canton before Central Ohio.
I'd love to know more about how they decide where and when to rollout LTE, I'm sure there is some logical calculation involved.
Or a few darts and a map.
i Have LTE here in Charlotte and Gastonia NC i have to say it is truly amazing!
I know the feeling. I dont have it in Sacramento but when I go to Davis (15 min sw of Sac) im able to experience it and its a treat!
