Wow. Gotta admit, my eyes teared up a little bit.
Best commercial of the Super Bowl. Hands down.
I dunno about best, but better than most, and better than I expected.
Which one did you think was best?
For anyone who wants to watch all the commercials, they're all available here: http://www.youtube.com/adblitz
My Two Cents:
My favorite commercial tonight for the Super Bowl - Parisian Love (Google)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnsSUqgkDwU
The funniest commerical tonight - Doritos Boy Slap
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bptmb0Ygmus
The manliest commercial tonight - Michael C. Hall (Dexter): Dodge
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RyPamyWotM
And the sexiest commercial of the night - Megan Fox!!!

WOAH totally missed that one!
One of my next favorites:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbifmRBBN6Q Intel Lunch Room, so awesome
the audi commercial was best imo
The Parisian Love (Google) was well done But, I liked the halftime WHO concert better
I and every one who saw it thought the Google commercial was epically retarded.
A step above tampon not so fresh commercial.
Ad industry took a gamble airing several Gyno friendly ads and by most accounts failed miserably.

Just because it didn't make you laugh doesn't mean it isn't a good commercial. Google's commercial was the only one I can think of that was a serious commercial. Most everything else is just cliche and juvenile.

It was a feminine commercial during a heavy male audience.
Just becuase you thought it was cute or original doesnt make it a good ad.
It was getting trashed on twitter as pointless.
Good commercial ? Maybe, but just about oddest place to try to capture a search audience with a feminine ad. The reason commercials are cliche and juvenile is the audience for that game its predominantly drunk males.
Women tend to "attend" superbowl parties but few pay attention to it. Google must have seen some numbers that the rest of the ad world didnt see.
Awful ad placement more suitable for Oscar night or an Oprah show.
Pubbing the search engine...I get it...totally.
Not pubbing N1 dont really get it ..but ok.. , using a female centric Valentines dayish commercial I dont get.
The point of a commercial is to get noticed and remembered. Google failed IMHO.
Agreed. They should have banged out a commercial showing off the phone, which is a more guy-centric model that makes more sense for the super bowl.
"Feminine"? What, you haven't grown past your "ewww girl have cooties" stage?
Google's ad was about the only one that attempts to engage you mentally, not stroke your ego and assure you how manly you are. I'm saying this as someone who doesn't think much of the ad itself, but at least it's not yet another pathetic appeal to the lowest common denominator full of tits and idiocy.
Right , attempt to engage me mentally during a football game where high fives yelling , screams/cries over gambling bets ,alcohol and finger foods are the norm.
Genius.
Knowing your audience is the key to advertising. How Google the king of online ads didnt get that is beyond me.
It was a feminine ad whether you like it or not. Just like tits and idiocy are masculine ads. If you cant distniguish the difference maybe you too can work for Google tv ad agency.
Are you saying then that "masculine" equals idiocy and being able to appreciate nothing but tits, ala a mind that never grew beyond the age of thirteen?

Yes, ads that have slapstick , scantily clad women , tools , trucks , mud , fire , explosions ,beer , erection helpers ,guns , fighting ,sporting equipment , men participating in sports tend to fall under the umbrella of masculine.
Romance , chocolate , flowers , tampons , soap , love etc etc pretty much fall under feminine ads.
If you cant see that oh well. Its not up for debate its a fact of life.
That Google ad was as useless and out of place as a TDWaterhouse commercial during YoGabba Gabba or adult diaper ad during the NikTeen awards.
Go listen to This Week In Google podcast where that ad was getting ripped before it was even aired. Men :what a bad ad and bad idea for SB ad....Girl:aww its a cute ad.
Sums up most viewers thoughts on this.
googles ad was genius.
Every single group of people watching the superbowl had a female with them...or at least a good majority did. This being such a female commercial makes it literally the ONLY commercial the females of the group would be talking about. This means not only did google advertise on tv in front of millions but, they just got all of those females watching the ad to advertise that same ad for them again, and again, and again through word of mouth. Sure, the guys are going to be talking about the funny commercials, but they are going to be talking about the humor not the product where in the case with google, the females will be talking about how sweet it was that the guy was googling all these things. These girls will tell thier female friends who will then google search($$$) where they can watch the video who will then watch the video on youtube($$$). They will then ask their boyfriends and their girlfriends if they saw the commercial who in turn will google search($$$) the ad and watch it on youtube($$$) as well. so on and so fowarth($$$).
Google knew not only the audience but how that audience would react to their ad. pure genius.

I'm sorry - but the demographics during a regular NFL game can be thrown out the window when you're talking about the Superbowl. It's a completely different animal and for many females, it's pretty much the only game they watch the entire year.
Additionally, there are more than 100 million + people watching the game, and most research indicates that 35-40% of those are females. Meaning 40 million females are watching. Simply because you as a guy thinks it's out of place doesn't mean it isn't a good idea with a high ratio of value for the cost.
I, for one, thought the ad was brilliant. The entire narrative and story, basically the entire commercial here, was shown using the product itself. How many commercials can claim that?
That google ad was feminine? lol
Give me a break bro.

Ok, so this is of course old news, I just stumbled over the article by accident a few minutes ago and thought I'd share because of the hilarity of it all. It was a pretty laughable article in 2007, but even more so now when Android is in full swing and is getting better by the month and more and more manufacturers joins the OHA.
Hindsight 20/20 and all that, but most of us hardcore Androiders knew Android would not fail, despite what a few self-proclaimed experts said on their blogs. We knew it even as far back as 2007/2008. Ben Kunz obviously didn't, though.
Lol just read this Ben Kunz what a MOD EDIT
think of your choice of wording when you post.
thank you
I remember reading this a long time ago. I laughed then, but it is even funnier now. The comments are almost equally funny.

It's heartening news, but you gotta consider that percentage growth is one of those marketing spin numbers. A platform that is selling 1M units in 2008 experiencing a 900% growth sells an additional 9M. A platform selling 10M units in 2008 only has to grow 90% to experience the same increase in sales growth.
Well, to be honest, if the G1 looked like that prototype picture...I wouldn't have bought it. That is one seriously ugly looking phone with a tiny ass screen.

True, but as a self-proclaimed expert on all things tech he should of course have known Android is not about hardware (let alone about prototype hardware). Android is about software.
I knew that as soon as I first heard and read about Android back in 2007, I bet you knew that, and I also bet most people on this forum knew that -- we knew the possibilities was and is almost endless. Ben Kunz, however, did not. And he wrote a downright stupid article about it, showing off his ignorance.
It did bring us lots of amusement though, so kudos to Ben for making a fool out of himself
Think about google as a company. Starting with a school project and growing to what is now. Everything google owns is destined to succeed. They have a huge master plan and everything they do/own is tied into each other in one way or another.

I've got one of the prototype phones for testing... while its no G1, the keyboard is a lot nicer to use. For folks who just want a simple lightweight texting phone, I can see it being pretty attractive.

I hear what you are saying, but lets...for arguments sake...equate a cell phone to a woman (no offense to women...but its the best modern day analogy I can make at the moment).
Okay, men (in this case the generic term "men" means "customers") look for a woman, they want it all...sexy, intelligent, and able to do a lot of things (interpret that as you see fit).
A G1 fits most of that. A G1, while not the sexiest in the world, is decent enough looking...but what she lacks in looks she makes up for by being highly intelligent and capable of performing a variety of tasks you may hope she can do...as a woman.
The Android prototype in the picture may be able to do a lot of tasks, but she can't do everything...and, while intelligent, she is seriously to fat (wide), to short (squat and square) and way too fricken ugly to really be considered anything more than a friend (like when you look at your buddies cell phone that was a free give-away for signing a contract).
Now, to really get the whole package, Android phones need to take a page from Apple's book and make something super sexy like an iPhone with all the other Android and tech components in the G1...only with longer battery life.

Honestly, I'm not too attracted to the iphone. It's plane, too skinny to be comfy, has one button, not my type. Maybe if she was the last girl in the bar at the end of the night i'd take her home, but i'd leave before she woke up and deny it to my friends..
The exact reason why Android based phones are going to blow away Apple and Blackberry.

Flash wars...first 5-10 minutes or so.
Just want to say love Diggnation and Im a big fan of Kevin Rose.
Been watching him since TechTV days and ((back then more than now)) he really seems to know his stuff. Somewhere along the way he reaaaallly became a hardcore Apple fanboy. Which is fine , he admits it. But his breakdown of why he didnt like Android/Incredible was just mind boggling.
My initial reaction was WTF ? Pretty much the complete opposite reaction Leo Laporte had with his Nexus One.
((I bring Leo up because they came up together and have and still do work together)).
When Leos gone into his dislikes of Android..I get it. Hes right.
But Roses were just mind boggling.
Things like cant do anything ? Lack of Apps ? complaining about mult-tasking , task manager , battery drain , interface etc.
Than him bashing Flash ((which thankfully adam shutdown with his "it works fine on PC")) was just kinda clueless to me.
Your thoughts ?

ya it angered me..like the scrolling the cursor through the text part where he kept tapping the phone like an idiot..the incredible has an optical trackpad to easily scroll through the words
holy **** he sounds like an idiot... cant figure out how to turn stuff off on android? look what apple has done to people! geez these guys are thick...
Kevin Rose is a known idiot. I thought everyone knows that.
wow i've never seen this podcast, but that was just painful to watch, i mean stupidity goes a long way with this guy, listening to his retarded rant, hopefully he returns the incredible, and gets another iphone, maybe some other user will give a good use for the incredible :]
I used to like him. God what a dumbass Apple sheep. Apple is the dumbing of America!

Wait, wait. People here are surprised that two douchnozzles on a couch in San Francisco might have spicy hot boners for Apple?
Oh, man. Stop the presses.
Watching this video excrement both confused and enraged me to the point of wanting to take the skinny one and use him as a blunt object with which to beat the fat "I'm so web 2.0 I don't even comb my hair" one to death.
This video is the epitome of everything that is wrong with the direction the internet, and our world, is headed.
Two douchballoons sitting on a couch, gasbagging about what they like and don't like about the accomplishments of others. Man I'm glad I wasted 5 minutes of my life on that. Now I can remember to never, ever visit Digg again in retribution.
Funny that he runs practically exclusively on Apple considering Macs lack a lot of things a PC will do for you.
At least he likes the camera lol
I stopped watching/listening to Kevin shortly after he went to Rev3. When Patrick Leo and Kevin ran Screensavers it was fun and informative to watch.. RIP Screensavers. But now Even Tekzilla is more about bringing in the cash and showing high end devices and not enough geek gadgets and stuff. I could hang with Patrick on DL.TV but when he left there and joined the Rev3 gang he lost it. Every so often I'll tune into Rev3 and checkout a few vids, but for the most part I really don't enjoy it anymore, especially Kevin.
that was indeed tough to watch. I wanted to scream at him throughout the conversation.
The one thing I agreed with was the way you select a spot in a paragraph and copy and paste, its definitely stupid.
It was really tough to watch someone with generally legitimate credentials (i never heard of him but i did some googling and whether we like it or not there a lot of people who dig the guy) to describe and complain about something he doesnt fully understand, for example:
He was complaining about, "I shouldnt need a task manager because there shouldnt be **** running in the background that i dont want running in the background". It sounds like a logical argument but isnt it true that those apps arent actually running, theyre just taking up some ram to get back to them quickly? Or are they really using battery? Because that too would be stupid.
Well he's an Apple fanboy what do you expect?
People defend stuff they own/like. It's as simple as that.
You go to an iPhone forum and they would be agreeing with him while here they get bashed on because it's the Nexus One forum =) It's not like anybody is wrong, it's just down to personal preferences. This stuff happens all the time, you start making a thread about which car is better, bmw or audi, and the argument goes on and on. Both are great cars, and the iphone os and android are great smartphone os.
Kevin Rose is a brain dead out of touch moron who has no business hosting a show about technology.
i want my time back from watching that crap...

After hearing from many people for days and weeks about how amazing the ipad is and people say it will drag me away from my love for android, I decided to see for myself. I went into the Mac store today and I was faced will the "future" some might say. The ipad, it was light and had a nice screen but apart from that it seamed like I had shrunk and was holding an massive iPhone (but without the phone part). That was about as much good as I could bring myself to think about it. I was disappointed with it to say the least, but this was to my joy! Android still rules!
The restriction with the device was unbearable how could you enjoy that restriction with the so-called “future”. (I could go on about how boring it was to use and how it felt like I had seen it before but I guess you may already know what I was thinking!)
After my initial shock of how so many people had made such a fuss about the ipad, the only decent thing I could think to do to help our society, in any way I could, was to help the next sorry person from being caught in the apple (your so cool and we will tell you what you can do and what you cant do) net was to, with the most joy and fun I had all day! (I have passed my driving theory test this morning by the way), was to go round the store and on as many icrap devices as I could get my hands on and navigate to (the real future) android website, on there web browsers and share the real coolness of openness and freedom to all who would see! Oh how I love our little green friend.
I know in the grand scheme of things this may not change the "cool people" of this world being told apple is the only way but I just felt I owed it to android and all the real cool people who our open to openness!
And with this I will finish and encourage you with…
…every little helps

Lol!Why won't these guys give us a break?I won't criticise their hardware, which is not bad,but their policies and software! That f*****n' iOS/Mac is like a digital prison! You are allowed to do only what the MIGHTY BIG APPLE allows you to!Being a linux user for the last year and an Android user/fanboy since December I just get disgusted by Apple!

I'm not a apple fan..but Whats the point of a android phone that is not open source and unlocked? might as well get a iphone those can be jail broken still..
because in todays world...if its not privatized...you cant sell it to support the habits of the age old 'pecking order'...
and if you cant sell it the way you want to ... your system of sales fails to be useful in this modern and ever changing world
but damn its so easy for them to fall back to their old ways of cracking the whip and making a buck
less effort...more profit...more slavery...more control...more easy chair time and less effort on their part to develop useful products that serve their purpose so we can move on to more important things in society
like perhaps, limiting reproduction because we have no real resources to feed your inborn desire to duplicate despite their own wishes for more slaves, to produce more privatized products, so they can make more sales...
the result is you staring at a computer reading a half defined post by some guy in the midwest trying to solve the problems of the world while you shake your finger at a cell phone company and i laugh at you for not even realizing the people that run these companies have probably never lifted an ounce of soil or had to walk a mile to a job they never wanted in the first place
just saying
the only thing they are listening to...is if it will limit sales...
but heed the warning...all this is doing is pushing away the inevitable
restructuring the world to not rely on money...a design concept that holds no ties to any or actual physical limited resource
JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN MAKE A FULL BREATHING EATING HUMAN BEING FROM YOUR MICROSCOPIC SPERM AND OVARIES DOESN'T MEAN YOU SHOULD
JUST BECAUSE IT MADE A BILLION PEOPLE SMILE BEFORE YOU DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO EVEN IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH MONEY SAVED UP TO SECURE THEIR FUTURE
your decision to recreate does effect others...
freedom of speech is what they gave
just like you i took the bait
now i see the price we pay
for rights so obvious no need to itterate

i'm pointing at the extremes of the human concept
locking down a cell phone has no positive results on the world at large
just like having two kids in stamford only serves one families pride
maybe they will go on to figure out how to extract all the resources from neptune
is that more important than growing a garden in my back yard, producing one 15lb of plastic waste (my dog food bag) every 6-8 weeks...or not reproducing because there is no physical reason to be having children right now...
we can barely figure out basic day to day functions that work for everyone and share in them
yet constantly we push our society to do more, and make more...and never lay down a solid basis that sustains life
that gets chocked up to natural selection...and pat on the back "good luck buddy"
the point is...all our problems can be solved and sustained right here
we just aren't smart enough to look past our own penis or vagina
our own chemistry that drives our actions
to find simple solutions
family first
everything else...ahh **** it i'll get around to that
pride is a deadly poison

I don't think this means the fall of HTC. People on XDA are definitely a minority. Even if you can convince a few people to not buy HTC products, they will still make a profit.
It's like the Left 4 Dead 2 boycott on Steam. The game was preordered by more people in the boycott then people who weren't. It's the same principal. People can act high and mighty, but people are people. People lack the willpower to not get something they want. If someone wants an Evo 3D, then they'll get it.

the result is you staring at a computer reading a half defined post by some guy in the midwest trying to solve the problems of the world while you shake your finger at a cell phone company and i laugh at you for not even realizing the people that run these companies have probably never lifted an ounce of soil or had to walk a mile to a job they never wanted in the first place
just saying
the only thing they are listening to...is if it will limit sales...
but heed the warning...all this is doing is pushing away the inevitable
restructuring the world to not rely on money...a design concept that holds no ties to any or actual physical limited resource

You are talking about a phone right? This isn't a matter of life or death. It has nothing to do with your rights. You come off as ignorant and stupid. This is about a damned phone.
Remember, remember the 5th of November. The gunpowder, treason, and plot. I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot
and your inability to see the larger picture makes you more ignorant than i
the moment you lose sight of the bigger picture...is the moment you give up the possibilities of what this world could actually be
this isn't about a cell phone...its a chance
a chance for us all to get our heads out of our ass

I'm pretty sure HTC has the full right to do this to a product that they made.

Wow, that's ridiculous. Good ole Mr. Jobs, hard at work to do what's best for his people....

So in theory if my buddy is filming his kids bday party and say they have music in background. Would this program keep him from filming said party?
I dunno this sounds like big brother stuff to me

There's a reason I don't buy Apple and it's not a product related issue. Nor is it a pricing issue.
This isn't the first "big brother" move and it won't be the last.
All the more reason to trade in my evo i love being able to do nothing with my phone forced to like stupid **** and put up with more dropped calls and slow ass data speeds...aahh who am i kidding f*ck apple

The article said that (copied word for word) "the device would trigger the attention of infra-red sensors installed at the venue. These sensors would then instruct the iPhone to disable its camera."
So basically the people running the Venue would have complete control over the camera app of the iphone, if they had that infrared technology installed. It's ridiculous.
Just another patent that apple will never use. Screw crapple and jobs.
I can't see Apple unilaterally doing this on the iPhone. It would drive consumers from the iPhone and towards Android. A more likely scenario is: the music industry pushes for legislation requiring all future recording devices include this technology. Apple owns the patent. Apple makes $$$.
That said, I still don't see this going anywhere. It's far too intrusive... and stupid. I mean, have you ever seen concerts that were filmed on small handheld devices? The look and sound like ass. The music industry isn't losing any revenues this way.
Also, cops could potentially use this technology to prevent people from filming them beating an unarmed suspect to pulp. So the ACLU would get involved, too.
wtf is this parental control or big brother control on an iphone.. im a grown man i dont need a cell phone telling me what i can or cannot do ; especailly when i paid over $300 dollar for it plus a overpriced cell phone bill every month..
Another "hey do you need to use my evo?" Moment.
If I saw Steve Jobs crossing the street, I wouldn't hesitate to speed up and jump the curb to plow into that POS idiot, just so I wouldn't have to read about all this stupid **** he does with Apple.
This is just getting out of hand.....I swear iPhones are like the "666" mark of the devil lol, everyone that has one is automatically going to "heck" <~~~ hahaha

This would be a bad move for concert goers, especially those who just want to take pictures if themselves and their favorite stars.
The article says the patent is "seen" to be for this purpose, but could be for much more. There are many companies that do not allow camera phones into they businesses, and the right technology could help with this. I don't know if an infra red sensor would ease any fears tho.

Ah yes... I bet this is the more likely scenario. We are not allowed to take pictures at hte government agency where I work, but of course, with everyone's phone having a built-in camera these days, that policy is largely un-enforceable.
Still, I worry that adoiption of such technology could be used by the government to hide abuses of power (i.e. police brutality).
I'm totally gonna get a device I can wear around my neck that emits that ir signal. that way nobody with an iDevice can film or take pics of me or anything near me.
can you imagine the pranks that can be done with that! no more innocent birthday party pics, reunion pictures etc etc taken with idevices
I also like how Jobs is always running his mouth about how apple is the only company that invents things and all other phones are just apple copies yet apple was just ordered to pay nokia I believe $600 million plus a fee per phone they make for copyright infringement. Screw Jobs and crapple!

Another observation I made is that if it is triggered to shut off the camera by infrared signals, what happens if you're recording a video at home and someone were to point the TV remote in your general area and changes the channel?

then apple will buy the rights to remote controls and sue the manufacturers, then release the remote control as its innovative method of turning off the pics and recording
Wow, just when one thinks the cockroaches in Cupertino can't get any lower.
I am fascinated by all the reaction here and my interaction with people I meet lately. More and more people coming around to the point of view I and others have held for many, many years. Good to see it.
