...Nexus One Trackball...**BB 8900 MOD?** - Nexus One General

I just seen the disassembling video for the Nexus One on Youtube and said the trackball was the same as the blackberry's. I have a spare black trackball from the 8900 and want to clarify if they actually are the same. I know down the road the trackball will soon start to yellow or get dirty so I think replacing the trackball and even cleaning out the dust specks under the screen.
Anyways just want to clarify and if all is good then I'll go ahead and write a write up if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the offer on the write up. I would be interested.
I cannot confirm that the trackballs are the same but I do know that the mytouch also uses a blackberry trackball.
Maybe you can check the part number of the blackberry trackball and the nexus trackball to see if they match.

will the BB 8900 trackball fit on nexus one ?
any confirm info on whether both part no.s are the same or not ?

AFAIK HTC buys their trackballs from the same places as RIM
I am about 98% sure they are the same.

Kiss the trackball notifications goodbye.

from where can i buy the OEM nexus one trackball ?
from where can i buy the OEM nexus one trackball ? I don't want to loose the capability of trackball color notifications !
I have searched on dealxtreme and cnn but can't find any !

I went from a bold 9000 straight to the nexus one, the nexus one's seemed much bigger.

Got a replacement n1 today. Forgot that the original color is white/clear as opposed to the grey that my original one had become.

Mine's worse than that, it's basically black (I suspect it's dye rubbing off from the dark blue jean pocket I usually keep it in?). I wouldn't mind so much except the notifications are really hard to see unless the room is quite dark. I've already tried to clean it with pure IPA (isopropyl alcohol) but that didn't help at all.
If you do manage to replace your trackball successfully and write it up (with photos!) I for one would definitely appreciate your efforts.

The tri-color LED is behind the trackball, not inside it.

I managed to clean my trackball pretty well using a Magic Eraser.
Just be careful not to scrub too hard. It takes a lot of patience trying to rub the eraser against a moving ball.

Nexus One Trackball

I use my trackball alot and is very handy, But at work cleaning my hands all the time sometimes isnt easy so im noticing slight discoloration in the trackball(notorious issue on blackberries) nothing major but its noticeable.
I already changed my work BB to an Atomic trackball and I seen that the Nexus One uses a standard BB trackball. I'm debating whether I should change the trackball in the nexus one with an Atomic Trackball.
Has anyone attempted to open up their phones? or just open it up just for the hell of it? I usually crack open my phones out of sheer boredom and curiosity at work(I fix phones for a repair center)
I know if I replace the TB with an ATB I will lose the light notification which is fine. but I cant stand dirty discolored trackballs Is anyone thinking about doing so? I like the silver trim and black trackball, and I think it will look great on the nexus one. Any advice tips or comments?

Story on Engadget about the screen coming loose

not a big surprise. probably exactly the same crappy screen adhesion problems that were leading to all the dust under the nexus screens... :/
mine is starting to do it as well, I can feel it slightly raised above the bezel
What problems will manifest due to this problem?

Dust under the screen. And you can see light leaking out of the bottom of the phone

Wow this is totally sh*tty
I just placed my order for the Evo and should be receiving it sometime this week.
I am wondering if maybe keeping the phone in a tight-fitting silicone case might help to reduce any possible "DISPLACEMENT" of the screen
glad to see this is getting media attention. i'm sick of htc and their crappy quality control. i went through this whole thing with my hero already...
and yes, my screen is coming apart too. it definitely wasn't like that when i got it last week.

If HTC continues to mass produce phones that fall apart because of faulty manufacturing...then the customers just might revolt
Dang it!!! mine starting to raise up as well I love this phone and Sprint service but I'm afraid the problem will worsen up as the time passes. I'm not the type to switch devices after every new released and perfer to hang to something until I feel it's not doing what I ask it to (still have HTC Uni, 8525, Treo 750 and Axim x51v).
This and the 30 fps capped is my only main concern about this phone, especially this screen separation (more light leakage or dust problem). The rest of the problem doesn't really bother me much such as the laggy touch input, improperly grounded screen and other problem doesn't apply to my device.
Is it worth the hassel of exchanging it hoping to get one without the screen separation or do they all have this problem? I'm hoping the newer hardware version (version 3) doesn't have this sort of problem, mine is hardware version 2. What you guys think?
I have been noticing more and more light leaking. I thought at first I was maybe just getting paranoid (still possible) but I saw a line about 1.5 cm long along the lower left side last night... That was definitely not there before.
What should I do? Would getting the TEP plan be prudent at this point, to cover this issue if/when it gets worse? Or would be the kind of thing HTC would be more... lenient about replacements?
Think the hairdryer method will work like it did on the Nexus? My nexus had this issue and the hairdryer method fixed it up permanently.

Doesn't hurt to try. If it worked on the NX-1, it might work again

Yeah I actually just tried this and it worked pretty well only a little of leakage left, I figure I'll seal it up some more when I have the time and Im pretty sure I did not hold it down long enough to let it cool effectively. but the parts that are still down work like a charm. way better than having to go back, lose all your apps, headaches of customer service, etc.

So this is the reason I see light under the buttons when their off and the screen is off, and its dark in the room? because my screen seems to be holding up well, and I have it in my pocket all day, no case or screen protectors. then again, I haven't been messing with it, trying to apply things or mods to it.
Hair dryer, bubble gum, tape and what else?! These are high-end devices (Evo Nexus One, etc) and they should NOT need a MacGyver handbook to keep them together after days of ownership. HTC needs to do right by us from the design stage period!
Dear Babies,
This is a site about hacking phones. Stop *****ing and use your brains for a change. Get some black silicon caulk from Lowes. Rub a small small amount in the crack where the buttons meet the case where the light leaks. Congratulations, your phone can now be left in the desert for 10 years and nothing will get through that seam including light... I swear, you guys can spend all day rooting phones but cant use some damn common sense to fix the hardware itself. I had tons of light leakage when i got the phone. Zero now, and you cant tell i did anything to it.

This is very true, but there seems to be a gray area when it comes to (S*** HAPPENS and a bug that can be fixed)... And it seems to get grayer everyday.....
hair dryer seems to have worked fine on my evo

Yellowish mark Appearing on keayboards side.

Ok so I thought this was just my 1st G2 that was showing this. It seems that the rubber tabs beneath the screens are leaving behind a yellowish stain on each side of the keyboard part of the phone. Look at the '@' key now look at the grey part to the left of it and check if you see any yellow stains. Same thing on the grey part to the right of the 'enter' key. On both my 1st G2 and now my 2nd G2 I noticed this.
I tried cleaning it but it doesn't come off. I tried alcohol too and still. Scared to try anything else because I don't want the paint or color to fade.
Now idk if removing the tabs from beneath the screens is a good idea but idk why this mark is happening.
Id take a pic of it but don't have a camera to do it.
Also I don't mean to add to the list of problems of this phone as I absolutely love this phone and wouldn't trade it for anything.

its proven that this yellow mark will reduce the phones processor to 400 mhz. really.... its just a "yellowish" mark...
I actually have the same exact thing on mine. I thought it was just something random but I saw this post and I wonder otherwise.

It's urine. The type of composite htc used for the g2's main body is susceptible to saturation from organic waste fluids. This is irreversible. Wash your hands more, or stop peeing on them.
That is my scientific diagnosis. Trust me, I'm a doctor.

Interesting that multiple people have the same yellow mark on the phone. I have it too but thought nothing of it. Just that it was most likely gunk from my pocket. Its just odd for a lot of people to have the same mark in the same place. I have failed at trying to clean it off a few times now. Anyone successful clean it off.
Can someone post a picture of this yellowish mark?
You guys DID peel the protective plastic layer off of the keyboard panel, right?
I thoroughly looked over my phone and cant find what you are describing. I'm guessing I dont have this problem.
I think its part of the rubber adhesive under the screen

It is because of the rubber. But I was thinking of covering it with tape. But what good is it if I can't clean what's already there?

Yes I did first day. Same with the 2nd phone. This is happening because of the adhesive rubber on the back of the screen. Its the only thing that touched the keyboard half of the phone. The marks are left on the grey next to the @,.com,alt keys and on the right of the delete, enter, and right alt keys.

I just noticed the same thing started appearing on my phone. I've had the phone since a few days before the official launch and the yellow spots just started showing up a day or two ago.
I haven't been able to clean them off, but I agree, it looks like it might be from the adhesive from the rubber pads. Alcohol didn't work to clean them off... I am fairly certain acetone or anything stronger will eat the paint off the phone.

Just noticed this,
Here is a pic. Oh and the yellowish stains are appearing in a spot where the plastic layer did not cover...
http://tinypic.com/r/2lstg75/7
The one on the left is hard to see in this lighting, but the one on the right is clearly visible
Edit: I just tried some diluted acetone and the stains did not come out. They are really in there good.
my phone has it too. but the right side stain is much more visible the the left. i hope its not anything coming up from the inside like a chemical leak or idk. it seems to be getting progressively darker
I just realized I have yellow marks on the side of the keyboard also. I just called tmobile, and since I was still in the remorse period, I'm having them send me another one. Great.

What good is getting a new one? Its going to stain again. They are all like this and whoever says they don't have it is either because they never use the keyboard or they are in denial.
My first g2 had it and my 2nd one has it. Even the test dummy in radioshack had it.
Had anyone figured out how to clean this???

Custom back replacements?

Since the Nexus 4 has back glass like the iPhone 4/4S/5, do you think they will make custom back glass replacements for the Nexus 4? My gut says no, but just curious? What do you think they'll look like?
I was thinking of the same thing considering the 2 screws on the back. I would also look forward for a back "Screen protector" like the iPhone 4/4S/5.

Yeah, I'd really like to see a market of custom backs..... Not sure if I'd like them, but it would be cool. And I was hoping for back screen protectors too.
That would be awesome. What I'd REALLY like to see is something like that one glowing Apple replacement back, except with a glowing Nexus symbol.

This. Although maybe just have the X in Nexus glow. Plus whatever kind of other backs we can get. Variety is always good.

Unfortunately you'd have to add a few mm to make it glow. Still might be worth it though.
We won't get metal backs because of antenna issues, but we might could see carbon fiber and plastic.
Other possible issues with the whole idea is the fact that the antennas are actually on the back plate, which would make replacements more expensive.

More than that, check out all the contact pins:
http://cdn02.androidauthority.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/lg-nexus-4-teardown-1.jpg
So does all of those things attached to the back plate make replacements very unlikely, or just more expensive?
Personally, I'd give up wireless charging (I have a super long USB cable, good enough for me) if necessary, (and if the phone could still function without it) to keep the price down on a back cover.

Did mine. Let's see how long it last but it looks really good.
Looks good but no way I'd rock this thing without a case.
Even with cases I can destroy phones with my Butterfingers, lol.
Wait, so you literally just pulled the button off and then had no issues popping it back into position? Nothing broke?
If it's really that easy, that means we could buy a spare colored button from a parts site, like the orange button from the Clearly White variant or the green button from the Kinda Blue variant and pop it on.
How has this not been discovered, previously?

That's correct. I put my thumb nail under the bottom of the button and it popped right out. If you do it make sure your over a table. I didn't expect it to be so easy and it went flying. Almost lost it.
The button it's self looks like it's made out of metal but the back looks like plastic. I had a little bit of a hard time getting it back in but not overly hard. Don't think it matters which way is up

Maybe that's why I had trouble. Just thought it was my fat fingers trying to mess with a tiny button. The first time I put it in it didn't go in right so I pulled it out and dropped it. The second time went right in.
