WING and WiFi

My problems with my WiFi on the Wing (Very FRUSTRATED )!
1. When the screen turns off, the Wifi turns off. Meaning I cant use this as my email machine like a blackberry. I have to turn the screen on to get the wifi back on.
2. The Wifi it keeps "forgetting" the WEP key even though I programmed it. It happens once a week (approx)
3. The wifi keep suggesting that I can connect to all these weird SSID's around me when I have my own router set up in the phone. Just connect to mine and stop asking. At work, At Home, At my friends house, At the cafe down the street. If you dont find these, dont ask. if you do, just connect, stop asking. Stop not connecting.
4. The wifi keeps asking if I want to hook up to LOCKED SSID's. Hey, they are locked, if I knew the wep key I would try to connect manually. Stop asking! Is there a patch that allows the phone to suggest connecting to the OPEN wireless networks after it actually makes sure there is actual internet access in there?
5. How do I tell the phone: NEVER TRIES TO CONNECT TO THE EDGE OR GPRS for data. I DONT HAVE THE SERVICE. The wifi keeps turning off and the phone TRIES to get on T-Mobile GPRS or Edge all the time. I even deleted T-Mobile from my internet connections (I dont have internet access on my t-mobile account as it was extremely slow and I have Wifi everywhere I go, except when I am driving)

After months of use, I still have not been able to use my Wifi. In fact the Wifi does not connect to my router anymore, not even once. I gave up and I am paying for the $5.99 service now.

Sounds like you need to take a look around these forums... All your issues have been posted over the net and how to fix or actually "customize" them are everywhere. You may want to read the manual too since that tells you alot of stuff also.

Reading is Essential!!
The easiest thing to do is start over: reset your router (you might check out your setting on your router as well to make sure your encryption is the same and you haven't been hyjacked.
The messages of secure sites is normal: keep dismissing and it will get it. The ones you normally setup on will automatically log on.
As far as the losing the encryption, thats new: the only way I know to lose it is to reset it, or the phone crashes!!
My suggestion is to READ the manual on WIFI settings. read, try read & try.
it only took me 2 weeks to set everything up, and I never had these many issues.

[Pb] Data connection turns of by itself

Hello everyone,
I need some help because my "data connection" turns off by itself on my htc hd. I am on standard EnergyROM 'Genesis' as follows :

Yep mine does the same (same rom) but it turns its self back on when its needed.

I believe there is a setting on HDTweak where you can set time period for data connection to remain on or you can disable this time period. Thing is, you wouldn't want it to remain on at all times due to costs depending on your phone tariff charges and also power drain on battery. It would be better if your data connection disabled when not in use and then connected again when required as pointed out by jakari above.

I have already verify this things on HD tweaks and it's disabled ("6.1 Disconnect After" menu on HD Tweaks). So why it turns off itself? That's the question ...

i have the same problem as well. i 've flashed many different roms including the official roms. but that problem still exist. very annoying when u use msn or twitter, it keeps dropping off. anyone please give us some help~~~~~~

Yes, same problem here. I left Yahoo messenger working via Opera on the Wifi and woke to find it had switched overnight to the phone network, with the data connection becoming active all by itself.. I downloaded Nodata which seem to prevent this sort of thing happening.
Its not so critical now as I've signed up for 'unlimited' mobile web access but I would still use the program, if and when I go abroad.

Data charge when using WIFI - WTF?

I recently had a weekend in the UK on holiday and to make sure I did not get charged a fortune for roaming connection charges, I made certain that every time I used the phone online I had a good connection to the hotel's wifi hotspot.
I've just received a bill for nearly £100 for 18mb roaming, and nearly had a heart attack since I should not have been using any roaming services!!
Anyone know how this could have happened? As I said, I made absolutely certain that every time I was using the internet I was successfully connected to the wifi hotspot, so I don't understand how this can have happened but I'm furious about it.
Not to mention that the thieves have charged me £6/mb for a crappy GPRS connection!!

What also really annoys me about this is that I even tried to setup SPB's data monitor app beforehand as a precaution but it would not register any data traffic even though I set up the tariffs with all the necessary info.

Hotel WiFi isn't free - usually £5 an hour or something extortionate like that...

But that wouldn't end up on his phone bill, it'd be on his hotel bill.

Your right that wouldn't end up as part of the phone bill, However the following items will
Weather updates
Email syncronisation (possibly automated)
MyPhone (or any other "Cloud") backups
RSS Feeds
We're any of these enabled? Unfortunatly I am unaware of any way to turn off DataConnection without the above having the ability to automatically turn it back on. For that reason I will never take my phone (and leave it on) overseas.

Will that 'NoData' app not work for disabling anything over gprs/3g on the HD2?
And I'd like to echo the above - chances are it was an app on your phone downloading data in the background.

Thanks for that, but yes it was definitely free at this one (actually a B&B rather than a hotel as such). The bill I'm talking about is the monthly carrier bill for my HD2, NOT my hotel bill.
The problem is that the HD2 has basically been using my normal data connection but was showing as using wifi at the time.
I switched off all auto updates to prevent this too. The periods where I've been charged are for like an hour or so when I've been browsing the web in the evening.

Not that i want to make this sound obvious but, are you sure you was connected to the WiFi network. Just turning on your WiFi does not mean you are connected to the network, as most have Network Keys to grant access (or public guest passwords), you don't normally allow any old Joe Blogg onto the network.

a little extra note to this is that many public wifi spots actually let you connect, and only then ask you for user info, so the phone looks like it is connected, when in fact there is no gateway out past the first landing page.

i had this problem with my old htc kaiser ( i had turned off all data connection apart from wifi) and it would still try and connect to a 3g network. when i returned from the states to the UK my bill was over £300!! i complained to t-mobile and they thankfully cancelled the bill!!

Applications may well (and do) connect to the internet over 3G even when you have Wi-Fi connected and operational. That is simply how WM works.
There are various solutions out there to fix this problem, both manually turning cellular data connections off as well as those that automatically turn them off when you are roaming. I know one of the latter ones is on Marketplace.

valid point guys but yeah it had a full wifi connection and a valid wep key.
if I could get gprs monitor (our whatever its called) to work then I could try to reproduce the fault st home but it never registers any data use when I try it. are there any other apps that can monitor my phones data traffic?

Thanks - I did see that one of the auto updates had gone ahead anyway using the data connection as it showed a connection to a server but it was for a very brief instant.
The big amounts of time/data however are purely down to browsing though. And that's my issue here. How can it be using the normal GPRS data connection for browsing even though it has a stable, fully open, free wifi connection? Have I got a setting wrong somewhere perhaps?

My guess would be that the hotel internet link was down. You would still connect to the wifi network but it would fail to route traffic. tcp/ip was designed to work for US military to handle parts of network getting nuked so it seamlessly (and transparently) uses the next best link. I did think the HD2 asked before connecting when roaming tho. To be safe go to comm manager and switch off data connection before browsing next time and watch it doesnt come back on again.

I suppose that's an idea that they may have had a problem with their network BUT I've just tried a test at home.
I'm connected perfectly to my home wifi network with a strong signal, but my phone refuses to do any data stuff like go online, basically because my normal data connection has failed (it does this maybe once a day). This means that even though it is showing as being fully connected to wifi, it isn't actually doing anything with the wifi network and is still trying to do all data traffic including browsing through my GPRS connection instead!
How can this be happening?!
Incidentally I got a reply from HTC about this. It was VERY apologetic - which to me suggests that they know there is a fault. You don't apologise unless you're at fault for something after all!
They sent me some HTC app that they said I need on the phone to prevent this happening in future, which seems like an admission of blame to me, but I know I'll never get the £100 in roaming charges back from them even though it appears to be their fault after I've taken reasonable steps as a consumer to ensure I wouldn't get charged.
Very unhappy about this.

Data connection woes
I have a similar problem - skyfire or opera will not connect using wifi when data connection is disabled - both in settings and individually using "nodata" app.
Does anyone have an idea of how to force use of wifi and restrict to wifi use?

personally i would have manually turned off the the phone connection under Wireless Controls and just turned on the Wi-fi on the phone.. that way it cant possibly use GPRS as essentially it is in a semi "Flight" mode..

those BT 'clouds' (think thats what they call them) charge to your phone bill, when I phoned up to change my price plan I was told if I didn't have mobile internet addon using wifi through these will incur charges

I've used my XDA's around the world for years without a problem
In the UK I've got bundled unlimited data - so data is always enabled.
The first thing I do when putting my HD2 into flight mode on the aircraft is to run no-data. most cooked roms include it - but if not just download the cab.
"no data" allows you to toggle your cell operator based data connections - to off. Which has worked flawlessly for me in the US, Europe and far-east. On your return to home just toggle the settings back on.
The alternative is to go into comm manager and turn the phone off - but whats the point of that? You won't even be able to receive texts. I like to be able to receive calls and texts, but with the security of not running up extortionate data bills.
As an aside - if only all operators would allow you to set a strict (low) limit on data charges for roaming.

Data Connection Always Connected

I am not sure if this is even a problem, but before today my data connection to t-mobile would only connect when needed. For instance, if I was home then I would be connected to wifi and my data connection would turn off by itself, but would still connect if needed by a program, or whatever, that can't use wifi but needed the data connection instead. Like when I sent a MMS message for example. Then after the message was sent or whenever the program was done with the data connection then it would automatically disconnect where I would continue to use the wifi connection. Also, if I left the house then I would automatically be switched to the data connection as the wifi signal went out of range.
This is the way I liked it. Today it had changed the way it behaves. Now, the data connection stays on no matter what and I have to manually turn it off in the comm manager. Also, everytime the screen turns off and the device goes into sleep mode, or whatever you call it, the data connection automatically turns backs on while it is sleeping. For example, when I go to sleep I press the red hang up button to put it in sleep mode then I go to sleep. When I wake up in the morning the data connection is on and when I go to turn it off it shows it has been connected for however long I was asleep for.
Like I said I am not sure if this is a big deal or not, I just don't want to be charged for going over the data cap for some reason. And I am not sure if maybe there is a program in the background that might not be showing up in the task manager and is downloading data that will eventually cost me when it goes over the cap.
Now I know that certain things automatically connect to download data like mail, weather, stocks, twitter, etc., but I always thought that they could use a wifi connection if available. And if not then I know for sure that it used to at least disconnect the data connection after it was done.
I am basically asking if this is normal because it used to not be like this on my phone and if it is something I need to.be worried about? Also, if anyone knows how to change it back to the way it used to be? I would greatly appreciate it if you let me know how to do it.

All I want to know is if it is normal to always have the data connection on. So does anyone else experience this? The data connection seems to reconnect by itself everytime the phone goes in standby and stays connected until I manually disconnect it.

Hey I just happen to have similar problem with the data connection turning on by itself when I check email on my wifi.
If you goto comm manager - menu - connections - advanced
Under "select which networks are automatically" - select networks
Change the connection type under "programs that automatically connect to the internet..." to your wifi connection from "t-mobile data."
Seems to work for me at the moment anyways. It's not connecting automatically to data connection when I check my emails.

It's actually the default behavior for the data connection to stay on once it's activated, until it's switched off manually. You won't pass significantly more data that way than if you just turned it off right after whatever app(s) are doing using it...the only downside to leaving it on is the speed at which it drains the battery.
There are some users who choose to leave it on, just to avoid the delay when they want to use it, and there's probably tons more who don't even have any idea you might want to turn it off when not in use.
Now I could swear there's a cab floating around here somewhere that will shut off the data connection once it sits idle for 60 seconds, but I didn't turn it up in a casual search the other day, so I can't point you to it right now
As for the apps using wifi when it's available instead of calling up a data connection, every one you mentioned should do that, and those all behave that way for me...so maybe there's something else you haven't thought of yet that ignores wifi when it connects to update or whatever. I would start by turning off auto updating for any and all of those services you listed, and see if the issue persists. If so, you'll need to dig deeper to find the culprit. Do you have microsoft myphone connecting to backup maybe? That seems to ignore wifi on my phone, I'm sure there's other apps that do as well.

Today it actually quit doing it for some reason. So I have no idea why it did that for awhile. Now I read that some people were having the opposite problem, which was that they couldn't get their connection to stay on. Now, this is actually the way I want it. Oh well, I hope it stays this way now.

3g fallback for internet on wifi?

So I'm having trouble with getting wifi how I want it on my phone. At work we have a unsecured WAP with a web based authentication page. Trouble if you ever use it, it remembers the WAP and wants to login, but unless you you goto the web page, you have no internet. This is particularly a problem when wifi sleeps and looses connection.
The big issue with this is that my phone assumes it has internet when it doesn't. It doesn't fall back to 3g on failure to connect. That means I will not get texts for hours, facebook won't update, etc, etc.
Is there a way to force the phone to fall back to 3g when it fails to connect via wifi? Alternately is there an app that will parse a wifi login page and auto login for me? I'm running clean GB right now.

If wifi was active it should stay active there is an option to keep wifi on in the settings that way it wont go turn off/ go to sleep while its connected. Change the wifi sleep policy this will keep it from "disconnecting".
Settings>wireless & networks> wifi settings> press the menu button advanced> wifi sleep policy> Never

That's not the big problem though. If I lose connection (easy enough with out concrete walls and walking around) or simply don't login in first thing in the morning I still have the issue.
I either need a fallback to 3g or a way to auto login.

well i can tell you what i use Juice Defender and When WiFi is once it goes off my data kicks in so yeah that's my fallback to 3G so you could give that ago if you want.

IMO
Juice Defender= Battery Drainer and waste of money when i can do what it does manually.
To the OP:
the phone should automatically go back to 3g when wifi disconnects i just tested this with my router i had it connected then pull the plug and it went to 3g.

ive done some tests without JD also helps in other areas BTW, and to let you know i put JD on Extreme and let no apps get data unless i manually toggle data and i can tell that my battery lasts much longer by at least by a few hours but still helps rather than my data always being funny randomly connecting and disconnecting to 3G or even if it was off JD does help.

It does when it disconnects, however since the wifi point is open it auto connects every time it picks it up again. Aside from manually forgetting the wifi point all the time, there doesn't appear to be a way to stop this. Connecting remembers it. Its not that I can't get around this manually, but its really annoying.

You could probably do something with a tasker profile. I don't know how to do it but they have a bunch of examples on their site that may help.

I see your problem. You may be able to do this using scripting. The closest thing I have ever done like this is write a script that logged into my cable modem admin page automatically and grabbed the signal strength to log it. I used PHP (command line interpreter) but I would think any language should be capable of submitting data via a post request. Mine was triggered by cron. You would need to trigger on a successful wifi connection, check the ssid, and go from there. I dont know enough details about how that part is done to be helpful, but I know there are some apps that do detect active wifi connections (samba comes to mind) so it must be possible.

It might also be something where the connection on the wifi network's (not your phone's) end times out, in which case I'm not sure what to tell u.

DON'T USE THEIR WIFI! Problem solved.
