Trackball wont scroll down - Nexus One General

Hi all
I'm hoping some of you have had previous experience with stubborn trackballs.
Mine stopped scrolling down the other day, left, right and up works fine, but I can only scroll down if I apply pressure about halfway down.
Basically it seems its losing traction when I scroll down.
Anyone have any handy DYI tricks to get it working 100% again? Chewing gum and a paper clip? No?

No one?
I mean I can still use it, but I'd prefer it to work perfectly

I've had that problem on both the Hero and the N1 and I was able to solve it by pressing it down hard and scroll around a lot, eventually it started working again.

Thanks!
I'll give that a try

G-Sensor dead?

Yesterday I dropped my Touch HD. I was sitting down, and it was in the pouch, so I thought there wasn't any damage done. The phone seemed to work like it should. However this morning I noticed that in Opera my screen wouldn't rotate. So I tried different programs like the HTC Album, and the G-Sensor calibration. Neither of those give any sign of life, GSen doesn't work either.
I did a soft-reset, I don't want to hard-reset just now...
I didn't find anything using the search but did anyone else have (or hear of) this problem? Can I assume my G-Sensor is dead? I have warranty so its not that big of a deal, but still...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=457985&highlight=sensor
give it a good shake, might be that the part that moves in the gsensor could have gotten stuck
Thanks for the link Juggler (wonder why I couldn't find it), however the solutions there didn't help me. I tried altering the settings in Advance Config Tool like in the other topic, but its still not working (didn't think it was a software problem anyway, but I'll try everything that might help...).
I tried shaking, tapping, and hitting the phone as hard as i dared to (don't want to brake it even more ), with no success.
The people in the other topic also had one of the bubbles in the calibration tool stuck to the left, hitting it on that side got the sensor unstuck. However both of my bubbles in the calibration tool remain dead center, so it looks like the phone isn't receiving any input from the accelerometer at all Its either broken or disconnected then.
I guess I'll have to send it back, unless anyone here has a miracle solution?
The problem seems to be solved... I have hit the phone a lot harder then I dared to do last time, en it's working again
I think it's a strange weakness though, my previous phones have had much more to endure, so I hope this is not a sign for the durability of the Touch HD in general... Especially since I'm not the only one with this problem.
Anyway, problem solved. Thanks for the help!

Cant text right with keyboard open? Jumps around.

Recently (starting hours ago) When i try to text and use the physical keyboard it jumps around. It may scroll up the message or go over to send or things like that. I have taken my screen protector off (great, now i buy another one) and wiped it all down but it still does it.
I also reset it a few times.
Anyone else experiencing this?
I am getting the same thing. I think something is conducting on the capacitive screen as when I set the phone down or don't touch it at all, this never happens.
So should i exchange it?
I don't know. Like I said mine seems to do the same thing. I am not sure if it requires exchanging or if my fingers are brushing the side in a way they shouldn't. I'm open for suggestions myself
Hmm no mine just jumps up the text page like it scrolls the chat message up even if nothing is touching the screen.
Same thing here. Used to happen with my old myTouch but it was after a couple months of use. Uncool for it to happen on the G2 just after the 14 days have passed.
It is probably the capacitive pad thats not working right. Its probably detecting heat and scrolling on its own.
Yes get a replacement.
It's the touchpad. Move to a room with different lighting and try again.
I second the touchpad. It messes me up in the terminal by sending special characters.

I did notice it was the light now. Still does it sometimes tho.
Thanks. What do you guys mean by captive ? Heat ?
Mine does this randomly too, and I've also concluded it's the trackpad. One time I went to my home screen while it was doing it and I could watch the selection scrolling from left to right.
Haven't figured out how to fix it, usually if I lock then unlock the phone it works fine.
Mine just started doing this today. I was sitting under the A/C and i noticed whenever i would try to swype during SMS text messaging, it would highlight "Send" in orange or it would highlight and scroll up the text thread. After I moved away from the A/C, it stopped doing this. my trackpad has been fine and I have never had any issues prior to this or even after moving away from the A/C vent.
This trackpad works on heat I would guess or like others have said, possibly electrical ground current which is probably by a grid I would imagine.
Thats kinda bad for you guys. I havent had this problem at all but seems like a trackpad problem. This happen to me on my g1 onces and that was a dirty trackball

Screen sticking

Anyone else having a weird, intermittent issue with the touch screen seemingly not working right
IE: I try to scroll and instead it makes a tap where my finger lands. Unlocking the screen doesn't work 50% of the time because the lockscreen will just lag out and I have to sleep/re-wake the device
This happens on stock and after i rooted to tiamats rom

I haven't experienced or heard of this before, at least as you're explaining it.
Is this accompanied by screen dimming? Did this start after the update to HC3.2?

I use auto brightness, but I do not notice it changing during this happening
I got my XOOM with 3.2 on it
Your device may not be grounded. It's a common problem with touch screen devices. Does this happen when you're holding the device in your hands?

I really don't know, let me do some testing and see what circumstances it is replicated under.
How would grounding be determined? Its not charging...
I do have it in a silicon/rubber case. Would that be a problem?
Just for the sake of satisfying my curiosity - if you are experiencing this issue while your Xoom is docked - try placing your fingers on the back of your Xoom and typing with your thumbs.
I am trying to resolve a similar issue that I only encounter while my Xoom is docked at one place in the world - my work. Nowhere else does it do this.
I have installed a power conditioner, with no effect. It happens whenever the power is plugged into the dock. If I use an external power supply it goes away (batteries). I did switch off the florescent lighting and it is better, so it may be EM related. especially since it is a *capacitive* screen.
I have also read of people with other capacitive touch screen devices have the same issue when it is not held in their hands.
Let me know either way.
Thanks,
Frans

I have seen issue on gtab where some roms/kernel where having issue with screen calibration, there was a calibration files that could be created in the root with the name calibration.ini and upon reboot it was fixed, I do not know if this is valid for a xoom tho...
with a few rom I had NO issue whatsoever and never reused the calibration...

Well you bring an interesting point. The device was in my hands but I was not actually touching it... It had a rubber sleeve on it.
I since got the Motorola hard case which has some areas exposed and I also disabled the lock screen, and I have not been able to replicate the problem at all.
The device was docked at one point, charging, and the problem showed up aagin (recalling from memory). The fix was to power off the screen and re-wake the device. This did involve touching it, so...maybe its an electrical thing?

I had this problem with the stock 3.2 ROM. I haven't done any calibration, and don't think I need to: it works perfectly majority of the time.
I'll reenable the lockscreen and try to replicate it again.
Okay I think I'm onto the problem
I opened the case just now, still lock screen disabled, pressed just the power button and the touchscreen was acting up again.. couldn't slide to scroll, but could tap/point only
I then put my thumb on the side, as if naturally holding it without a case, and it started working normally again without any kind of power cycle.
Thoughts?
Have you dropped or jarred your Xoom a lot? Look for threads I started in this forum, I have one that explains this issue and includes a fix. My Xoom is still working flawlessly. I'd link it but pre-calculus is about to start.

I bought the XOOM second hand from someone who claimed they hardly used it. Right now sitting infront of me, the bottom right, on the back edge, there is a small pressured crease as if it was dropped (looks like the corner of my phone when i dropped it on tile).
I personally have not dropepd it, but I throw this thing onto my bed all the time, it fell out of the dock onto my hard desk once, so yeah its been knocked around.
Will doing that mod void the warranty?
I found no warranty stickers or screws when I disassembled it. The back cover is made to slide down so that Moto can do the 4G upgrade, so I doubt they want to be fooling with that type of thing anyways. I can't say for certain that sticking a piece of foam in the back of your Xoom won't void the warranty, but I can say that it fixes the issue(which also could be covered by warranty if you can get someone to believe you've got the issue, I however could not, so I had to take it upon myself).
Alright
I just ran into the problem again playing a game.. seemed like the right half of my screen just stopped working intermittently. Kept playing and it returned to normal.
I may pop it open and try the foam thing. I'm pretty good with disassembling laptops.. I can't see this being much harder.

bandaid for screen tearing

fyi for those of you experiencing screen tearing like I am, I'm able to 'fix' the problem by trimming the number of recent apps to less than 7.
ie. 7+ apps in recent apps = tearing when pressing recent apps button on home screens (pretty much all the time for me)
less than 7 = no tearing
thought I'd share
Thanks Kermit was wondering why this issue wasn't getting more attention. It's been driving me nuts. At least we got a bandaid now. Thanks again!!
I am also having the same issue with you. I post it in another thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1527778.
It seems like there's only a few of us having this kind of problem. Trimming apps up to 7 does the trick but you can't help it when you always open a lot of apps. By the way, this does not happen when the TF is upside side down.
not sure what the term means but ive been having a diagonal flash go from the top left corner toward the bottom right corner (like a lightning strike) so will give the advice a go.
I figured it was my Season Zen wallpaper that is causing it. Need to try it with it turned off.
Been getting it too..every now and again..when I hit menu or home buttons..
Will come back to this thread and try the bandaid..
Thanks

Fingerprint scanner reliability

Hello! I have seen the ugly head come around that the scanner has not been super reliable. Now, I have the Tmo version and am on 9.0.0. Is that the reason currently? If not, It seems like the screen protector has smudges on it thus causing miss reads. If I try to wipe it off, it helps. Maybe we should be looking at a different screen protector? Thoughts?
Cheers
Joshua
I haven't had a fail to read yet... A few times it was slightly slower but still went through. Maybe try resetting up your finger. I know if my hands have been wet for a while my old phones wouldn't read.

I have reset it up a few times now. Tried even setting it up twice and that still didn't help much (to do this, I just kept pressing it again and again and it finally logged a second finger).

The more i use the FP reader, the better it seems to be getting. One thing is that it requires more pressure than my old Moto Z Play, but that's been an easy adjustment. Give it a little more time and continue to use all the fingers that you have stored. I mainly use my right thumb, and it works all the time now. My left thumb is hit and miss, so I'm using it more.
Unlocked the display 30+ times on 9.0.4 and it didn't reject my finger once. Speed varied each time if you place your finger/thumb perfectly aligned will unlock almost instantly
Was an OTA for screen unlock improvements already not sure what it changed though

Ill try pressing harder. Good idea!
I have the TMo version and I don't really get failures for my main/first finger entered. It seems that the more I use a particular finger, the better it unlocks. So the first finger is fine. The second was ok and is getting better. Third and fourth are still a mixed bag but getting better. My suggestion is to make sure you are enrolling them as you would be using them. So if you're going to be using a particular finger while cradling the phone a certain way, enroll it that way. If you will use that finger while the phone is sitting on your desk, enroll it that way. That seems to be the main thing I've found.
It seems the scanner isn't reliable on mine. It is really snappy after the initial setup. Then it loses accuracy within minutes after the setup. It doesn't recognize any of the finger 90% of the the time. I ended up either enter in the pin or use face detection. I don't understand the problem. my oneplus 6t is a tmobile.
I've got a McLaren on OS 9.0.9, and can definitely vouch for unlock instability w/ the left thumb.
Still have the screen protector on from factory shipment, so don't know if removing it would help, but not enough of a nuisance for me to want to remove it...yet.
I'm having an even worse issue.. A friend is able to unlock my phone without adding his fingerprint to my phone.. OP isn't taking this issue serious when I report this to them and they keep telling me to add my fingerprints again..
I have a OP 6T McLaren Edition, and just registered my right thumb. When I can't use my thumb, I use face recognition.
So far it's been reliable after a few weeks of use, but I've noticed you need to learn the right spot and the way you put the finger also influences its accuracy.
Something I've noticed...
I didn't use the "face unlock" when I first got the phone. Just used the fingerprint...VERY quick. Then, I turned on the face unlock just to see how well it worked, and was surprised how well it DID work (just not with sunglasses...duh). I've noticed, that if I wake up the phone,
with it anywhere near my face and try to unlock it with the fingerprint sensor (habit), the phone will stutter while I assume it is trying figure out WHICH way to unlock it.
Any chance that is the issue with yours?
If I have the phone laying on a table, no where near my face, and hit the power button, the fingerprint sensor is VERY responsive, but, if my face is anywhere near the phone, it struggles if I hit the fingerprint sensor.
Just throwing it out there...
Hmm.. I did notice that. I'll try disabling face unlock on my phone and observe it.
