Hi,
I have an HTC Hero that I bought from TELUS. Its running on the American 3G Band. I unlocked it and am running it on a different carrier (Fido). My question is, when HTC comes out with 2.1 ROM for stock European versions on their site, can I use that on my current Hero and still have 3G?
Thanks for your replies everyone!
Yep, you should be fine. AFAIK, the only difference between the NA and EU versions of the GSM Hero is the radio frequency, which I'm pretty sure the OS is ignorant of.
If you want to be safe though, keep your eye on this:
http://www.htc.com/ca/support/hero-telus/downloads/
I don't foresee the European updates being released any earlier than the Telus update, unless there's some hangup to do with the Google Navigation localization.
I would personally wait for the Telus update myself. Or root your phone and start using custom ROMs. If you do that, I can guarantee you'll get the 2.1 update whenever HTC releases it for any GSM Hero.
Hey I appreciate that speedy and helpful response

New to this site and I have a Canadian Rogers HTC Touch elf Rom version 2.21.631.1 wwe dated 10/05/07 I am tired of the fact that all the other cell companies in Canada are offering the upgrade to 6.1. I have contacted Rogers and they said nothing was tested for their network yet and didn't even know if was going to be offered. I have recently notice that Sprint in US is offering the upgrade and their work on gsm same as rogers. Has anyone tested the rom on a Rogers phone and does it work. I am getting frustrated. I am not skilled enough or too nervous to experiment with cooked roms. I need all my current features but want the 6.1
I couldn't help myself and bought a new T8185 a few weeks ago and i'm in love with this phone. I have it on ATT in new york. Now i hate myself for not having any patience and now the newer model is out. A few questions now about the euro t8185 HD2 in america now that the t9193 is out.
1. Is the hardware the same as the original t8185?
2. Is the t8185 now able to be flashed with a new ROM enabling it to use 850mhz 3g/hspa in the u.s. i.e. 3g on att?
p.s. sorry if its a noob question, im new to the world of HTC and win mo, but i did not see any other articles regarding this situation. thanks for your help.
1) Yes, the hardware* is the same inside and out.
2) AFAIK, 3G radio is hardware dependent. You can flash all the different radios you want, but unless the hardware has that specific frequency, you wont be getting any 850mhz 3G. Meaning, the Euro (t8185) version will not receive AT&T 3G/UMTS because it doesn't have the correct radio hardware.
* except for the radio.

1. NO
2. NO
Keep in mind:
t8185 designed for EU market but compatible gsm with usa ATT for partial functionality.
t9193 designed for AU/Asian market but compatible gsm & maybe 3g WITH USA att, but ROM dependent to accomplish that. You won't get stable 3g WITH telstra rom, but need customized rom.
t9193 hardware is NOT compatible for T-Mobile, at least no released model I know of yet.
HTC HD2 coming to T-Mobile, supposedly in March 2010. (probably a different htc model number)
Rumors are HTC HD2 coming to Sprint ( possibly android os model) & Verizon (as wm os) sometime in future. att...who knows?
Radio rom upgrades can sometimes improve your experience, but only within the limits of your hardware.
ROM upgrades cannot change the hardware compatibitity for a given signal. You must change chip inside the device for that.
ROM upgardes or customizing rom can improve your experience with your given hardware signal compatibility. (e.g. bug fix that improves signal problem)
Hold on to your t8185 until usa versions of the htc HD2 hit the market. Then, you'll have options. (e.g. change phone or change providers or both)
If htc HD2 is really a big hit in usa, then expect most providers to have it or a hardware variation of it, later this year.
Hello Everyone,
Anyone know the model number for the USA T-Mobile Version?
Thank you ,
Monnie
thanks for the info devilduck, i can't switch contracts till mid 2011 so i really wanted 3g with my current provider, at&t. Guess i'll just have to switch to 9193 eventually.
And to monnie, i dont think they have the model number out just yet.
Hi all,
I've successfully flashed my genuine T-Mobile HTC SP5m in the past and now I'm about to buy this "china made" version of the HTC Touch and I'd like to know if I'll be able of flashing this "fake" HTC Touch to the most recent ROM available, e.g. WM6.5 instead of the pre-loaded WM6.1?
Here's the "fake" HTC Touch I'm about to buy: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.21069
In the Discussions section of the DX website, a user is asking if this phone is ROM/firmware upgradeable and here's the answer provided, is it true??
Subject: ROM/firmware upgradeable?
CosmoVitelli Tuesday, July 20, 2010 8:40 AM
Without a new ROM image from the manufacturer - forget it.
Simonetti2010 Tuesday, July 20, 2010 8:58 AM
You might want to try http://forum.xda-developers.com/
The guys at XDA Developers have up-to-date ROMs for almost every WM phones released.
CosmoVitelli Tuesday, July 20, 2010 1:26 PM
Wrong. XDA Dev is focussed on genuine HTC phones, and trying to install a HTC ROM will make any of the chinese copies become a useless brick.

Thanks all for your time and support,

CosmoVitelli is right. I would never by a clone, nor try flashing one. Just spend the extra to buy a ligit phone and have the ability to use XDA!
Thanks for your reply. That's what I finally did, I bought an official HTC XV6900 at half the DX price off eBay, it's new Verizon phone in an opened box. Can't wait to receive it.
I'll have to flash it cause my provider here in Quebec is Fido and not Verizon.
Which firmware with WM6.5 would you guys suggest me?
Thanks all,
highmighty
Thats a vogue, so CDMA, you'll need to head there. They do have FroYo android roms running on it. 6.5 - not sure what roms exist for it.
Are you sure that phone will work for you. It is CDMA, from what I understand, Fido (Rogers) are GSM? I only ask as the DX link was a GSM phone.
Damnit... true, Verizon uses CDMA and my Fido carrier is using GSM, what's next? Reselling the phone as soon as I receive it? I've read somewhere that it is possible to use a CDMA phone on a GSM network, that there are some agreements made between the 2 now, that it will connect to at least the EDGE network but not 3G, etc? Is that true, are you aware of such a thing?
Thank you for your time,
highmighty
I'm not aware of such a thing, we don't seem to have any CDMA here in england, everything is Sim Card GSM Based.
In my honest opinion though, I don't think it will even connect to the GPRS network as there would be nothing telling it teh details (your sim card is not present)
EOF then I guess
Anyone interested by a new HTC CDMA Touch XV6900 currently locked to Verizon??
I'd recommend going to the xda marketplace section in general, you make have some luck there
Could always try to sweet talk the seller into taking a return?
Sorry that I ruined your hopes

So for those like me who purchased a virgin mobile legend we won't get it. Not sure what to do then.
Although it is a virgin phone, all I did to it was unlock it to use with Rogers. What should I do?

i have a virgin legend too so am in the same boat...not really surprised that virgin is not coming out with the update - welcome to canada
i really want to flash the unbranded froyo rom that came out today but unfortunately it doesnt look like its possible now...
until we can change our cid's or have a resigned ROM with our cid (BM___001) we would have to root and go with cyanogen 6.1 or another custom rom (not my 1st choice)..
if anyone has a workaround please help us out...thanks in advance
Well I wouldn't mind trying a few ROM's, but I'm a complete join with this stuff. I suppose I need to learn now...

I bought a Legend from Virgin mobile in August. I became tired of their games and recently purchased a sim card from Bell and put it in the Legend. Guess what? It worked no problem. I can tell you I never unlocked my phone. The Virgin Legend did not have any Virgin mobile software or wigets in them. The only place I saw the word Virgin mobile, was in the network operators list, (mobile network settings), and in network operator name,(about phone, settings). These changed from Virgin, to Bell when I put the Bell sim in. I am now wondering if my phone is still branded to Virgin. If it is not, I would suggest to the OP that you terminate your account with Virgin on the basis that they ended your upgrade path, then take your phone over to Bell, or maybe even Rogers. that said, how do we know that rogers would care to license an OTA upgrade for a phone they never sold? At least Bell sold the phone for a few months.
I got my phone from Virgin as well and I am using the modaco stock froyo rom. It is basically stock except it's rooted. The experience will be exactly the same (unlike using other custom roms) Trying to make the new ruu work on a Virgin phone is probably not gonna be much simpler than rooting, so you may as well go the rooting route.

you realize bell=virgin right? bell discontinued the legend so you wont see an update from them either...
Not so my friend. Check out post #14
http://mobilesyrup.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3928
I figured they (virgin or bell) would either do it really late or not at all. So I debranded it, but got the same error as in the other threads during the upgrade.
Then I decided to try CM 6.1, and the only thing i regret is not trying it sooner. Never going back to sense again, CM is cleaner, faster, with lots more options.

It's based on the vodafone rom that came out couple weeks ago but there is nothing about vodafone in it (no logo nor junk app). It should be identical to the one that came out today (at least from the end-user point of view anyway)
Here is the link:

You guys really need to stop emailing unknowledgable "support staff" and wait for official announcements like this one from the Virgin Mobile Canada twitter feed:
"android update! we'll be offering android 2.2 froyo update for htc legend in mid-january. stay tuned for details."
Looks like official Froyo for our Legends after all!
couldnt possibly wait until jan and dont want any bell stuff on my legend so installed the official htc unbranded froyo rom....

Yeah, I couldn't wait either and put Cyanogenmod on my Legend. My wife will be getting the Virgin update when it's available
Hey guys!
Just to be sure, is Virgin Mobile software version the same as the Bell one?
If so, that means if Virgin get the update, us with a Bell phone will get it to?
Virgin announced the Vibrant's update, and it was rolled out to Virgin, Bell and Sasktel so I assume so yes.

I have recently purchased a 32A Three branded HTC Magic (Hutchinson Australian Phone Providor).
After a bit of research, I have noticed the Magic was released with 850mhz support from Rogers in Canada. Most other releases sold in the US, EU, UK etc did not support this band.
As Three roams on Telstra's 850mhz network, I was wondering if anyone who owns a Three HTC Magic can verify whether the Three version does? (I am aware the Vodafone 32B version doesn't)
If so, when I plan to root the phone and load a new ROM, will I lose 850mhz support if i upgrade the Radio firmware?
If that is the case, what is the best and/or newest Radio I can use on the HTC Magic that supports 850mhz? (as I need the ability to roam).
Eventually I would like to try one of the Gingerbread or at least Froyo releases on it.
Any advice is appreciated.
