Just installed 2.1 - Hero CDMA General

I just rooted my Sprint Hero and used the 2.1 rom. I love it except i was wondering if anyone has the same trouble i am.
1- when making a call...proximity error and i have to hit the back key to get the phone screen.
2- not saving new contacts to my gmail account but will save under the phone.
3- my temp one the clock widget and weather widget for some reason is about 30 degrees off
on a side note. I am good with following directions. so rooting the phone wasnt bad.
i would like to understand what the hell i was typing in for commands and what each was doing. im kinda nervous now to install anything else because of this.
ive been on these boards all day, and have done my fair share of searching. modding this phone has been harder to do than my iphone and pre when they first came out.

Which commands did you type. If you share them, I will translate what it actually did.

well, don't expect to have a working ROM that's 2.1 for now even. the problem is, most people come into the forum and just install 2.1 cause they get excited and don't realize that its a beta. its not final. if you want a real working ROM, just use 1.5 for now and add modaco's custom kernel to make it go faster.

Also stlsinger, please tell me you didn't flash with this ROM. Because that ROM is for the G1, NOT the Hero...

I used all of them from this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583291
if you could explain that way since they are numbered, that would be alot of help.
and do i backup every time before i install a new one and save that nandroid foler each time? will this enable me to go back to each time before and reinstall whats in the folder?
so if i install 1.5. i wipe and install that. then how do you install a custom kernel.
i know im asking alot of noob questions. please be patient with me. i just want a deeper explination to doing these things.
Thanks for the quick respons guys.

check out the ROM wiki that's stickied. but for beginners, you might just wanna go with fresh 1.1 or modaco's 2.2 custom rom. if you install modaco's rom, you'll automatically get the custom kernel with all the enhancements like compcache, etc.
if you go fresh 1.1, which is what i use, you should download the update.zip of the custom kernel (also in the rom wiki), and apply that as an update.zip
either way, if you want to enable compcache, you'll have to use adb pull /system/init.db/compcache.sh and uncomment(remove the '#'s) from the scripts. or you can just do it from a file explorer like ES.

you said something about your weather being off? maybe, just maybe its in celsius, not Fahrenheit. as for the proximity sensor, its a app that trys to copy the proximity sensor using the light sensor I think.. Mine didnt work either lol. And I agree, go to fresh, modaco, or ttg with the 1.2 modaco kernel.

1:
Code:
cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools
Click to collapse
"cd" means change directory, so all you did here was changed where you were.
2:
Code:
adb devices
Click to collapse
"adb" is telling your computer to communicate to your android phone.
"devices" just tells us what's connected.
3:
Code:
adb push asroot2 /data/local/
Click to collapse
"push" means move from the computer to the phone.
So in this command you copied asroot2 from your computer to /data/local/ on your phone.
4:
Code:
adb shell
Click to collapse
"shell" allows you to run Linux commands on the phone.
5:
Code:
chmod 0755 /data/local/asroot2
Click to collapse
"chmod" stands for change mode. In essence your changing the permissions.
The four numbers following, means which class. First number being "all", second number being "user", third number being "group" & the last number being "other".
The actual number corresponds to what permissions that class has.
0: being no access
1: being execute, but no write or read access
2: being write, but no read or execute
3: being execute & write, but no read
4: being read, but no execute or write
5: being execute & read, but no write
6: being read & write, but no execute
7: being read, write & execute (aka full access)So what you did there was provide no access to "all", full access to "user", execute & read access to "group" & "other".
6:
Code:
/data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh
Click to collapse
Not really sure here.
7:
Code:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
Click to collapse
"mount" tells the computer to that the partition is ready to be accessed.
"remount" tells the computer to remount the partition.
"rw" as in read & write.
/dev/block/mtdblock3 being the partition that is being mounted.
8:
Code:
cd /system/bin
Click to collapse
Changing directory to /system/bin on the phone.
9:
Code:
cat sh > su
Click to collapse
This is what "cat" does.
10:
Code:
chmod 4755 su
Click to collapse
Changing mode/permission of "su" to, read only to "all", full access to "user", execute & read access to "group" & "other".
11:
Code:
exit
Click to collapse
"exit" terminates the program or shell.
12:
Code:
exit
Click to collapse
13:
Code:
adb push recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img /sdcard
Click to collapse
Your "pushing" recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img from the computer to /sdcard on the phone.
14:
Code:
adb shell reboot
Click to collapse
Your telling the phone to reboot.
15:
Code:
adb shell
Click to collapse
Going back into the shell.
16:

cd /sdcard/
Click to collapse
Changing directory to /sdcard/ on the phone.
18:
Code:
flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img
Click to collapse
"flash-image" means we are flashing/replacing an image.
The second item is which image.
The third item is what image is replacing the aforementioned image.
So here we are flashing/replacing the recovery.img with recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img.
19:
Code:
reboot recovery
Click to collapse
We are rebooting the phone into the recovery image.

I just enabled compcache by removing all of the # using es file explorer, just curious what this does ?

It compresses an area of RAM and uses it as cache.

sweet glad I did that thanks

Almost right but not quite. In the chmod 0755 notation the first digit is for setuid, setgid, or stickybit, the second is for user, the third for group, the fourth for world. There is no other. You could use chmod 755 and have the same effect. The numbers are literally right but the actual permissions are additions.
Octal notation
Another common method for representing Unix permissions is octal notation. Octal notation consists of a three- or four-digit base-8 value.
With three-digit octal notation, each numeral represents a different component of the permission set: user class, group class, and "others" class respectively.
Each of these digits is the sum of its component bits (see also Binary numeral system). As a result, specific bits add to the sum as it is represented by a numeral:
The read bit adds 4 to its total (in binary 100),
The write bit adds 2 to its total (in binary 010), and
The execute bit adds 1 to its total (in binary 001).
So read/write is 4+2 which equals 6
Read/write/execute is 4+2+1 which equals 7
I know it's pedantic but 6 and 7 don't actually mean r/w and r/w/x by themselves. They are additions of the distinct permission states.
So what he did was grant the following
0755
0 = No setuid, no setgid, no stickybit
7 = Read/Write/Execute (4+2+1) for the UID (user) that owns the file
5 = Read/Execute (4+1) for the GID (group) that owns the file
5 = Read/Execute (4+1) for anyone who can access the file at all (world)

Other, World, Everyone; they mean exactly the same. Just different terminology for the same thing.
In OS X, which is FreeBSD based, X00 is defined as system (root), 0X0 is defined as admin & 00X is defined as everyone. Like I said before differnt terms for the same thing.

I was mostly referring to the first number which in the post was listed as "all"
"...provided no access too all" which is incorrect. There are only three digits for user/group/(other,all,world) and you are correct that they mean the same thing. However 0755 is the exact same as 755 and the 0 is not "all" it is used for setuid, setgid, and the sticky bit. To get technical "all" is not the same on a Linux based system. "All" refers to the combination of user/group/other so chmod a+rw is the same as chmod 666 as "a" is "all" and changes the permissions of all the pieces of the triplet.

Ok, I think there was a just misinterpretation on my end on your original post.
I'm not too familiar with the first digit on a the four digit expression & I got my info on that digit from Wikipedia. So I have a question on this since I'm a little confused, what does "setuid", "setgid" & "the sticky bit" actually do?

He is suggesting MoDaCo's custom kernel be installed. The MoDaCo kernel works with Fresh 1.1, at least for me. Note that I did NOT have to Wipe Data before I installed it.

Flash recovery image Droid Eris How To

First of all thanks to Amon_RA for this. I had no part in creating this. I am just providing a how to flash it. There may be an eaiser way but this is what worked for me.
First let me say I am on a Mac. If you are on windows the adb commands should work fine but I can't say how to get adb working for you.
1. download flash_image Here Link updated 3/17/10
2. Open the terminal and copy and paste the following commands.
adb shell [hit enter]
su [hit enter]
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system [hit enter]
3. In a new terminal window (don't close the original one).
adb push flash_image /system/bin [hit enter]
exit [hit enter]
4. Now in the original terminal window
chmod 755 /system/bin/flash_image [hit enter]
5. Now exit all termainl windows and reboot your phone.
6. Download Amon_AR's recovery Here.
7. Mount your phones sd card and drop recovery-RA-eris-v1.6.2.img on to it and eject your phone.
8. Open the Terminal and copy and paste the following commands with the phone connected to your computer.
8. adb shell [hit enter]
9. su [hit enter]
10. flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-eris-v1.6.2.img
11. To get into recovery turn off you phone and hold the Volume Up + Power until it boots into recovery.
That's it.
I made an automator script the help all of you having problems getting adb working. Make sure you have the android sdk downloaded and named android-sdk Put it in your home folder and then run this script. Let me know how it works for you.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any damage you may do to your phone. I am only providing instructions on what worked for me. This is very beta. Good luck. Enjoy the nandroid goodness.
First link is Dead...........
ooopps Srry my bad, Its up.
You should mention that the chmod command is in the original terminal window. Also, you could do it in one window if you put:
adb remount
adb push bla /bla/bla
at the begining of everything.
adb push flash_image to /system/bin

I don't think there's a "to" in that command either. lol

Just a quick question. What does this boot too. Im new to all this phone stuff. I did the upgrade to 2.1 leaked so just been searching the forum here each day to see if a solution has come about. i just noticed v.1.6.2 in there so was curious as to what this will do.
Will this put the regular android on it or keep it the same, sorry just kinda getting started with android
coupla questions -
For northmendo:
Is the reboot in the middle of this even necessary? ( flash_image won't work right if /system is still mounted rw ?)
For testing567:
Do all the adb shell commands run as root against the 2.1_root install ... or maybe the above could be simplified even more by just running "adb root" first?
For Austinjs0102 (not a question)
This process only applies (at the moment) to phones with "2.1_root" - there isn't a path at present to go from "2.1_leak" to a rooted phone. Assuming that a way to roll back (or get root) for "2.1_leak" eventually is found, then the answer to your question is this: it is a process to apply a custom recovery partition to the phone that include tools that will allow you to perform complete phone backups and restore operations. This can be critical for devs who are experimenting with writing boot or system partitions to their phones - if something goes wrong with their experiments, they can "boot" their phone into recovery mode and restore back to a working configuration. To reiterate, though: this only applies to phones that are already rooted.

Thanks a bunch that helps clear up info.
hopefully the hard working dev's here find a 2.1 leaked fix for us early people, if not then i may need to lose the phone lol.

I am in same boat as you...
Let me start off by saying that I'm not a phone dev. I've done software development for many years, but never messed with the phone.
Can someone explain why we can't just load the 1.5 rooted PB001IMG.ZIP file over our 2.1 leaked handset? Is it a matter of the version number being lower? If so, since the 1.5 is rooted, couldn't someone just up the version number to whatever the 2.1 leak is plus one? Then, once it's loaded, write a little app to drop the number back where it should be?
TIA for the education.

Doc,
I understand exactly what you are getting at... and also think I can explain why it's not easy.
First - what has been discovered so far was not a "root break-in", but rather an engineering ROM with root "built in". It is cryptographically signed so that a production phone will recognize the .zip file as a valid ROM. That first validation step has nothing to do with version numbers.
If the "SPL" on an unrooted phone was doing something as simple as looking at a couple of bytes in the initial file downloaded to the phone, then yes - doing what you suggest would work... just patch a few bytes using a hex editor. Unfortunately, the phone SPL is quite sophisiticated: it verifies the crypto signature on the entire zip file first, unpacks that zip, and then examines the contents of an individual file within the zip archive (and possibly even unpacks one of the YAFFS image files and then looks in a file within the YAFFS image) to read version numbers.
That means that the fundamental issue is the cryptographic signature on the .zip file. If you do anything which breaks step #1, step #2 (version # checks) are never reached. Certainly an individual file could be byte-patched, and then images and zip files could be re-assembled... but you would have no way to sign the zip with HTC's private key. Or you could even attempt to byte-patch the zip file - but then that would break the crypto signature. Either way, the crypto signature on the zip file is no longer valid.
If you have HTC's private RSA key, let us know!

I added the reboot because. All I would get is out of memory errors. The reboot fixed that.
e.g.
mtd: read error at 0x001e0000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x00200000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x00220000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x00240000 (Out of memory)

That first link (that you corrected) now points to the recovery image, not "flash_image".
Note that the "flash_image" executable which Amon_RA originally included with his first recovery (.zip) is identical to the /system/bin/flash_image binary which ships on the Eris with 1.5 (1.17.605.1); the md5sum signature (of both of those files) is:
16559f2c27d08ff1ddfcaca05fbf10fb flash_image
That's also the same md5 signature as the "flash_image" file which was posted to dl.dropbox.
I don't have 2.1_root installed on my phone, but if the same binary is already on the phone after installing the 2.1_root ROM, there's no need to include those steps in your instructions. It is also possible that even if the "2.1_root" version of /system/bin/flash_image is different, it would also work.
Note that the only reason I bring it up is that your instructions might be (a) unnecessary, and (b) are encouraging folks to overwrite a binary that is already on the phone. No harm (but unneeded) if it is the same, and unknown harm if it is different.
Also (while I'm at it)
901167f6b5541b488c8e0404bceb0631 recovery-RA-eris-v1.6.2.img ***
It appears to me ( reading between the lines here ) that Amon_RA is trying to improve his v1.6.2 recovery - folks might want to keep an eye on that thread.
An alternative and quicker method than all of this is what zifnab06 suggested here. It's only two lines long, after all.

[Edit]***Wow, my post was obsolete the moment I posted it - don't know how I missed Amon_RA's announcement post. Note that there appears to be several versions of "v1.6.2" floating around now - make sure to check his post if you want the most recent.

You could try this.
If you have your phone pluged in and type in to the terminal
adb reboot recovery [hit enter]
After you phone reboots it should come up with text options to do back-ups and restores. Do you get any of that?
Anyone know the key combo to get into recovery without adb?
having issues getting adb
got the command prompts working in xp, however while trying the methods here in the forum i am getting adb not foud errors. Any suggestions?

If you are able to try this on another android device, please do as I will be very interested in the results.

thx to mercianary for help

I found this guide quite helpful at getting a bootstrapped Debian setup running.
http://www.saurik.com/id/10
I didn't need to insert the ext2 module as it's already loaded for me, I guess G1s didn't have that convenience back then.

dont know why that happened.. works on mine. syntax looks ok to me.
try with this one (attatched), it's the same but without the bit that's not working for you.
what rom are you using, i shall try to replicate the error so I can try to fix properly.

There should be a guide on installing busybox somewhere if you want to search for it, i know i remember seeing one a while ago.
Too be honest, your better off just flashing a rom that includes busybox, it would be MUCH easier.
have a look here and see what takes your fancy, I would recomend defrost, because it is stable and easy to overclock.
Thanks mercianary,
It works fine!,
I use customised DeFroST_0.9b_uvonly with USB-host patch.
By the way I would like to add more options to kernel line.
Where can I find like a menu.lst file ? or How to add it to kernel line.
There is no /dev/graphics/* in running Debian console.
I would like to use FrameBuffer on running Debian.
thanks,

You should understand that this is not a really booted native linux. Instead you are working in a chroot environment. So there is no kernel running that can get parameters. Only the the stock kernel of your DeFroST. Also there is no FrameBuffer as the graphic hardware ist not accessible. Instead this approach uses a vnc-server to which you can connect via a local viewer.
The advantage of this approach is clear:
- run almost any linux package available in the debian repository
- use your phone as before with the nice android
The disadvantage:
- no graphic output, so no 3D-games (which are rare under linux on the arm platform ;-)
- you can crash your android by eating up to much ram (not such a problem - it restarts on its own and if not you just have to reboot)
Thread is dead?
It seems this thread is dead. The problems many users seem to have come from a dirty setup. The image is broken in many terms:
- wrong file permissions on important binaries, like su
- wrong file permissions on many device files under /dev, so the ttys are only accessible by root
- wrong permissions on other places so there are always errors when installing additonal software (e.g. with the man pages)
- wrong setup that uses the root user for the desktop - instead an unprivileged user should be used
- missing packages for timezones and locales so the time is only right, if you are in a UTC region and console programs having trouble displaying anything else then plain english
I can not recommend using this setup image. It is better to use one of the instructions available online to get a clean setup.
Su doesn't work because your allready root.
Getting anything but root to work would be a real pain.
As you said its a chroot environment, its never going to be perfect.
The image was made using debootstrap just like all the other 'clean' ones.
Yep, it is broken as hell, but it works for what most people would need it for...make,gcc,python,a proper web browser, torrents, and some emergency word processing on the train to work.
The problem most people have is not being able to mount the image, this is due to fro-yo a2sd taking up all the loop devices.
Just thought I'd add my 2 cents.
I tried this on a MIUI rom and the scripy didnt do anything - ie i ran it using:
"# sh /sdcard/deboot"
.....and all it said was:
"#"
I entered all the lines in the shell script but the last one said it failed to launch VLC and no commands registered property (not even ls)
So i tried it on Defrost 5.1, and the script still didn't work.
But when i entered everything manually, it did work. Not too sure about the green theme though.
But thanks alot! Saves me spending a few hours trying to coax a working debootstrap out of my computer.
Thanks!
Josh.

Nope. Actually su works only for root. It's missing the setuid root flag like all other binaries that should have it set.

Nope. I am always working as a normal, unprivileged user in my chroot. You just have to be in the proper groups. No need to work as root. Android works also with an unprivileged user.

This is what I do not understand. There is no need that it is broken, as mine works without any errors. So I think something went wrong in creating yours. For sure a chroot is no running OS but you can server almost any service with it and run anything you want (if your ram does not get exhausted ;-).

Yes. Everyone with a good rom should have a2sd+ (aka the old a2sd) which saves more space than the froyo one and leaves your loop devices for you.

Troubleshooting for Newbies (having a "wtf!?" moment?)

Most of this information has been repeated so many times. But I wanted to make a short list of all the silly mistakes and simple oversights I’ve made over time.
(I make mistakes constantly - there are probably some mistakes in this very post - and I usually search around and try to find my way out of them. I will edit this post whenever I run into a problem. If anyone has any input, I will gladly add it to this post.)
YOU CAN NOT COME BACK FROM UNLOCKING YOUR BOOTLOADER:
If you ever think you’ll need to or want to “relock” your bootloader, you can’t.
Alternative root method:
VISIONary
(when you launch the application, you can leave everything unchecked)
Alternative recovery option:
ROM Manager (in the market)
ALWAYS DO A NANDROID/CLOCKWORKMOD BACKUP!
It will restore everything the way you had it if you F something up.
Want to go back to original shipping, but followed this guide, downloaded the linked file and can’t find the image files?
They’re not in that file. I don’t know why. Go here and download FRG33, decompress it and use the contents to follow the tutorial
Are you getting a “verification failed” error when you try to apply an update.zip in recovery?
Mount your SD card to your computer, download whatever file you were trying to apply directly to it (don’t download it and then drag it), and rename it to “update.zip”.
If you’re using Windows, make sure “hide extensions for known file types” is unchecked in your folder options within the Control Panel. You’ll keep having problems if it’s named “update.zip.zip” and you didn’t realize it
If you're still having problems, try this download of the stock FRG83 update.
<Added 11/18> I had another facepalm moment. If you downgraded back to FRG33 and you get an "assert failed" error, flash the recovery.img from that FRG33 package you extracted. (found this solution here)
Did you flash a ROM or go back to stock, start up your phone and noticed that you’re stuck on Edge?
Go to Menu>Settings>Wireless and Networks>Mobile Networks>Network Operators>(choose your carrier), wait.
Trying to copy something from your SD Card to /system/app (for instance)?
If you use the “cat” command, DON’T FORGET THE “>” SYMBOL. Nothing awful happens as far as I know, but it’s unnerving to watch the terminal puke all over itself.
Code:
cat /sdcard/thing.apk > /system/app/thing.apk
If you’re new to Linux and/or Android and are removing apps:
BE CAREFUL with the “rm” command. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
You can always rename (technically, "move") the files instead:
Code:
mv /system/app/thing.apk /system/app/thing.apk.bak
Switch the commands to get it back
Code:
mv /system/app/thing.apk.bak /system/app/thing.apk
And don't forget to mount /system as read and write. To do that:
Windows: (must have drivers installed, Nexus One drivers are in the SDK)
Code:
adb shell
su
Linux: (no drivers necessary)
Code:
./adb shell
su
Code:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/mtdblock3/system /system
Don't forget to mount /system as read-only when you're finished. To do that, use the same code but replace "rw" with "ro" (without quotations of course)
Having trouble connecting with adb?
In Linux, you need to be in the SDK directoy (mine is in ~/AndroidSDK/tools). In Windows, you need to have ;C:\AndroidSDK\tools in the system path, within Environmental Variables (right-click on Computer>Properties>Advanced>Environmental Variables)
Unplug the device
In Linux, cd to ~/AndroidSDK/tools (or whatever you called it) enter:
Code:
sudo ./adb kill-server
sudo ./adb start-server
Plug in the device
Code:
sudo ./adb devices
In Windows:
Code:
adb kill-server
adb start-server
Plug in the device
Code:
adb devices
Device not found?
Did you enable USB Debugging in Menu>Settings>Applications>Development?
Trying to install an .apk but it just won’t work?
Try the “adb install” method, or push the apk to /system/app. If the app force closes or doesn’t work, just remove it
Code:
rm /system/app/thing.apk
Using Ubuntu (or another Linux distro), trying to mount your SD through Amon-Ra's recovery, but it won't mount?
Disable USB-MS toggle, unplug the phone, reboot your computer, try again.

I'm glad you appreciate it. I'm not technically one of the guys on here. I've been on XDA in different device forums for a little while but have always been absorbing the information and never giving anything back. This is my first try. I can only dream of being a developer when I grow up, and solving more serious problems.

Just wondering ahorriblemess, I looked over the guide and it says:
"This will do the followings to your Nexus One:
1. Reset your system files to the original system files.
2. Reset your kernel/boot image to the original shipping boot image.
3. Reset your recovery to original recovery (if you wish)."
Since I'm a real idiot... does this guide get your baseband / radio back to original (january) shipping image as well?
I didn't see it in those 3 things and have the 5.12.00.08 version so I wanted to make sure following that guide would reset the radio baseband back to the original (january) version as well before I did it.
Now all I need to do is figure out how fastboot works and I'm gold!

I don't know. I'm in no way an expert at any of this. My intent with this thread was to compile all of the sort of simple things that I've overlooked in the past. Usually I've found solutions to those problems scattered all over the place, so I just thought it would be helpful to put them all in one place in case anyone ever has the same problems I've had.
I have a pretty good feeling about the answer, but I don't want to share it in case you decide to act on it and it's wrong.
Thanks a ton!

[Q] .sh script help

Hey guys, need some help with this one from some of you with more android/linux experience than me.
In my continuing quest to make Blackhole as customizable as possible I've been working on a way for users to easily install paid apps (legally downloaded of course), and stuff that I don't have available in rom manager in one easy step at the same time the rom is installed. In pursuit of this goal I've found that it's possible for the update-script file inside a clockworkmod zip to call a script in the zip as well. I've gotten it to say it's run the script, but it doesn't do what it's supposed to. here's what i've got:
#! /bin/
busybox cp /sdcard/app/* /system/app/
When I type the command into a terminal on the phone it works. When I open an adb shell and type "bash install.sh" it works. But when I get the update.zip to run the script, or run it in root explorer it just says it's run it, but doesn't do anything.
Is there something I'm missing about how to call the script? Do I need to somehow add the bash program to the zip file so it can run the script right? Has anyone ever done something like this who can point me in the right direction?
do you have an output you can show us?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
This is a shot in the dark but does writing to /system/app require root permissions? It could be that you've given your terminal app root, so it runs under su. But when the script is being executed it does not have root and fails, but perhaps the output is being held back a bit and you're not seeing the permission denied.
Steve_ ?!
whoa, didn't expect it to be you of all people
Anyhoo, this is a bit off topic, but I've got a small request, can you somehow make BlackHole 2.4 an option on Rom manager? I don't have DL09 so I can't use 3.0, but I really like the ability to select everything to customize, instead of me going and installing one thing at a time....
Why not just add the following to the end of the update-script:
Code:
copy_dir /sdcard/app SYSTEM:
Also, is the SDCard mounted by default when the phone boots to recovery? If it isn't, or it isn't mounted while the update is processing, that will also cause the problem.

sdcard is mounted when you go to recovery, because it's got to access the update.zip file on it to install anything. I'll try your code, do you know what to put after SYSTEM: to make it go to the /app directory? thanks for the idea, it's a different way to go, i didn't think about the fact the update-script could access the device if you don't use the "package" tag.
Don't you need to add "sh" to the bin directory and define the script as so:
#! /bin/sh
if you want it to execute properly..

normally yes, but there doesn't seem to be a /bin/sh directory on my fascinate, only /bin and that's where the cp and mv and cat, etc. are.
I made a script to do this forever ago on my G1 when it first came out... Let me see if I can find it.
This has been done lots of times before. If you look around on xda there are some backup scripts which do the same thing.

[MOD][SCRIPT] Get More Storage by Relocating Dalvik Cache!

DISCLAIMER: YOU AGREE TO TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR DEVICE IF YOU PROCEED.
The original thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/general/mod-save-data-space-cache-partition-t2942765) was getting to cluttered up with development and testing so I decided to start a new thread with the "finished" product. The original thread will be renamed to Q&A/Development. We might even ask for the old thread to be closed down. (up to @Bert98, the thread's creator.)
Moto G's internal eMMC card has a ~600Mb partition called /cache, which is not used since the apps' cache is stored in /data, so the latter fills up and the first one stays empty.
Owning a 8Gb model, having 600Mb not available for storage really bugged me, because my phone's memory (/data partition) was always full because it's a 5.7Gb space shared between apps and microSD files.
Now, it may not work for you if:
a) you have A LOT of apps installed.
And by "a lot", I mean more than 90-100 apps, but if you have a 8Gb model, you probably don't
b) you're running ART (this is default in lollipop and newer)
Since ART uses a lot more space than dalvik, the space in the /cache partition probably won't be enough. When I was running ART, it used 1Gb more than dalvik.

This was tested on my moto g 16GB which is running RetailUS_4.4.4 kitkat with CWM recovery. The custom ROM procedure was tested on the same phone but with cm11 Nightly installed.
Prerequisites:
1. You must have "adb root" functioning. If you don't head to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1687590 and there is a free download link at the bottom of the post.
Download and install the apk on your phone. Open up adbd insecure (the new app) and grant it superuser rights PERMANENTLY. Check the box that says "enable insecure binary" and make sure to check the box
that says "enable at boot."
2. You must have a recovery that can accept adb shell commands.
3. Root Access Duh?!
4. A windows machine capable of running batch files.
5. A decent text editor, notepad will work but notepad++ is strongly recommended. (Only needed if you are using STOCK ROM procedure)
Please, please make a nandroid backup before you continue!!!!
Stock ROM procedure:
Read the directions very carefully and then read them again, before continuing.
1. Download the cachemover_v1.3.zip from: LINK REMOVED DUE TO SCRIPT ISSUES.
2. Extract the contents.
3. Connect device to PC and navigate to the extracted folder.
4. Double click/Run the cachemover_Stock.bat
5. Follow the onscreen instructions until you get to the part where it says to edit a file.
6. About halfway through the script it will pull a file called "init.qcom.post_boot.sh" to the folder.
7. Open it with a TEXT editor and navigate to about line 487 (Might be different for 8gb model). Look here for a better understanding: https://www.dropbox.com/s/jr5lyl5s5i2jtpg/where to paste code.PNG?dl=0
8. Start a new line and paste this code in the file: (Refer to the image above for help)
Code:
chmod 655 /cache
chmod 655 /cache/dalvik-cache
chmod 655 /cache/dalvik-cache/*
9. Make sure to save the file in the same folder as the cachemover_Stock.bat
10. Press any key to continue on the script and let it do its thing.
11. It will reboot several times and land you on the home screen/lock screen.
12. If the script hangs after a reboot, you need to unlock the device to reestablish a connection with your computer.
13. There might be one or two force closes but once you close the notifications they will not come back.
Custom ROM procedure:
USE THIS FOR ROMS THAT DO NOT REMOUNT OR CHANGE PERMISSIONS OF /CACHE ON BOOT
1. Download the cachemover_v1.3.zip from: https://www.dropbox.com/s/bzj34g4q1s61ojz/cachemover_v1.3.zip?dl=0
2. Extract the contents.
3. Connect device to PC and navigate to the extracted folder.
4. Double click/Run the cachemover.bat
5. Follow the onscreen instructions.
If anything goes wrong:
Go to recovery, wipe cache, then wipe dalvik-cache and reboot. This should get your device back to how it was.
(If you used STOCK ROM procedure)
The script made a backup of the "init.qcom.post_boot.sh" file to /sdcard/init_backup
You can restore the shell script to /system/etc/ via shell commands or by using a root browser. To restore permissions:
Code:
chmod 740 /system/etc/init.qcom.post_boot.sh
chown root:root /system/etc/init.qcom.post_boot.sh
Custom ROM procedure already has a restore script!
I am currently working on an auto restore script for stock and that will be relased soon, hopefully! :good:
Changelog:
v1.0 - First stable release. Does not work on STOCK ROM.
v1.1 - Added a restore script.
v1.3 - Added support for STOCK ROM. There are still a few bugs.
How it works?!?!
Coming soon...
Huge thanks to @Bert98 and @dd043
Hit the thanks button if it worked! I went through about 50 factory resets, and reflashed the ROM about 25 times, and put about 10 hours of work into this script! Really motivates me for future projects.
Thanks for your help man and effort.
I encountered a problem, everything works up until my device boots in CWM to fix permissions, then just sits there doing not alot I don't even see the option in my CWM.
Any ideas? cheers

When it reboots to cwm unplug the cable and replug it, if it hangs just type these commands manually from a command window.
chmod 655 /cache
chmod 655 /cache/dalvik-cache
chmod 655 /cache/dalvik-cache/*
reboot
If this does not work you may ned to go into mounts & storage in the cwm menu and click mount /cache. Then try the commands again.
I'm having some issues on stock.
I thought 0655 fixed everything but no, I can't install any app after moving the dalvik-cache to /cache. I tried chmoding 0777 on the new cache folder, on /cache itself, to no avail.
Code:
E/dexopt cannot open '/data/dalvik-cache/[email protected]' for output
Anyone can confirm it's not only my device? And/or can help find a fix?
Also does someone knows how to execute commands on a particular init step? Real init.rc scripts can do:
Code:
on post-fs-data
mount -o bind /cache/dalvik /data/dalvik-cache
It there was a way to achieve the same from post_boot/init.d we could mount -o bind /cache/dalvik /data/dalvik-cache and all permissions issues would disappear as well as the need for symlink.
You have a typo in the threads title. Just a heads up.

Let me try and do that right now... Ill get back to you if it does!
My script works on stock btw... But the mount way seems a bit easier and might cause less errors than my way.
Try it please.

Yes I've tried your script, all went well but the result is the same. The script itself works nicely btw
Applications present before moving cache work perfectly, but I can't install anything new. I suspect it might be my device but before wiping everything I'd prefer feedback from others :fingers-crossed:.
I cannot install new apps as well. The mount command you showed me has the same effect too. I honestly don't know anymore, the sym link did not allow the install of new apps nor did the mount command you sent me. Correct me if I am wrong.
Edit: Going through all the init files on my phone to see which one remounts /cache at boot.
Why does the init.rc get overwritten at boot. Is it because the kernel (boot.img) is the one that copies it over? I have found by changing the perms/locations in this file and init.target.rc you can achieve what this mod is trying to acomplish.
I don't see the mount cache command in CWM strange
I've managed to get back to normal, thanks for everyone's help though, I will keep and eye on the thread

non-windows version?
Thanks for this tool. It's a great idea and our Motos really need it.
However, I have a problem - I do not own a windows license (os x and ubuntu user) and I would prefer not to spend $120 just to use it for this script. Pirating is out of the question for me.
I was wondering if there is any chance of having this script written for linux and/or mac. If impossible, is there a LEGAL way of running windows in a virtual machine? Something like a trial or similar?
If you know how just convert it to shell script for osx and Linux. I give you permission to do this but you may not take credit or rehost your creation.
Ok so I have the kernel extracted and we could modify and flash that, but I believe that it's not really necessary. There are a lot of risks to flashing kernels and I am not willing to take it. So is there a way we can modify dalvik so it creates it's cache in /cache instead.

Yes the init.rc is in the boot ramdisk. I don't think it would be worth the trouble to rebuild a boot.img. The moto g is fairly unbrickable but it's quite a lot of work to setup an environment to rebuild an image :/.
Too bad for the mount command, I was sure it was working but maybe I had changed something else and don't quite remember the steps to reproduce
We could possibly implement a shell script toggler for when we need to install new apps, but I'm afraid it'd become annoying fairly quickly: I noticed the issue initially because google play services decided to update itself, failed, and broke all google apps. As far as I know this autoupate can't be disabled.
Thanks for trying!

How about making a simple apk that toggles this feature. Something like when you click the icon it doesn't even open but gives a little notification of success. Something like that. I myself am not experienced with apks but I can put together a shell script for the apk.

Patching dalvik itself sounds promising. It can probably be done with in a batch script with a command line hex editor.
The path is defined in frameworks/base/cmds/installd/installd.h
Code:
#define DALVIK_CACHE_PREFIX "/data/dalvik-cache/"
Not sure if there is another mention in the source tree.
But there's nothing to say we wouldn't face the same issue, the error message in the logcat is pretty generic

Ill try it. I don't mind doing a bunch of resets because I am using my moto g as a test bench anyway. My daily driver is the OnePlus One

EDIT: Unfortunately it didn't work. I don't know if I modified the installd file correctly. The program I used is HxD.
Is there a way we can force dalvik to start after the directories are created. And change dalvik to create it in /cache.
