need instructions upgrading to eclair. - G1 General

k well i tried to ext2 my sd card today so i could install a 2.1 rom
did the ext, phone no longer accepted my sd card.. im running 4.2.13
after that i lost 90% of apps that changed over to the sd inclucing settings/marketplace ect..
did nanoid backup restore, things are ok, though i cant install a theme, if i do it loses settings button in menu and everything.
question is, can someone give a little bit of a detailed instruction on how to install eclair from 4.2.13 with 4gb sd card.
would be appreciated thanks!
gettin tired of flashing 4.2.13 done it 8 times tonight tryin to get things to work!

First of all you should state which eclair rom your trying to flash, I haven't checked any of them out since I like to keep my phone "functional". Are there any out that have almost all the phone features working?

havent tried flashing one yet as i got stuck with the partitioning of the sd card.
i wanna install
KiNgxKxlicK AOSP 2.1 [v1.3] [FAST] [STABLE] "Thanks Google" 01/27/10 5:30pm PST
hspl10.95.3000
cpld-4
radio-2.22.19.26I
thats where my phones at right now.
im not a newb to flashing roms, just kinda stuck with the ext2/3/4 and which spl is hardspl and such

When you mess with your ext partition and have apps2sd working its not going to let your phone work any more, just turn apps2sd off or change to a rom that doesnt use apps2sd before going to this 2.1 rom, that way your sd card won't be needed for the phone to work and you can get all your partitions set up for this rom

can you suggest a good rom that wont deal with apps2sd?
sitting on 4.2.13 right now.
just wanna get 2.1 up and running so i can leave my phone alone. flashed and nanoided to much tonight to wanna keep it up
still isnt where i had it before..
theme just wont install over 4.2.13 anymore, and when it does, it only has advanced launcher*i dont use* and NO settings panel to clean cache and use reg home.
btw i did the ext2 via the sticky in Q&A

regardless of rom i get FC

i have tried the fresh roms, and the TTG CDMA rom, regardless of the rom i get force close errors on settings in the phone and i dont have data or voice service. everything else works perfectly EXCEPT for settings and service.
help?
ae you performing a wipe before you flash? I know a lot of these roms say that they are no wipe but I have found that that it is always better to wipe then flash that way you know you are getting a clean install. also do you have a ton of apps? it is a known problem that the phone will freak if you have more than like 60 apps
yeah, i have wiped also. but one thing i only wipe data/factory reset
should
i wipe
dalvik cache also? alsong with anything else?
when I install a new rom I wipe both the factory/data reset and delvik cache. I also do this when I am going from say TTG 1.6 back to my backup of fresh 1.1. It just assures me that anything that one dev did in their rom will be wiped out and replaced by what the other did with no problems. the only FC I get is google voice ( which FC's on EVERYTHING for no particular reason)
ok wiping data, and dalvik because jusr assuming battery status, rotate settings and partition doesnt matter.
from my personal use I dont use all the options in recovery. the partition SD is going to be usefull once you get the ROMs running if you want to run apps2sd
nope...
ive unrooted used kitchen numerous times to auto root aswell then just apply update and I can get everything to work except FC on settings and no service, im trying to figure out how to use ruu 1.2.3 instead of the 1.5 one idk just gonna try.

RUU 1.29 will not work for you if you have used 1.56. Are you sure you're running a Sprint CDMA Hero? Can you step by step explain the process you go through when RUU'ing and when flashing, and when the problems start?
ok if i wanted to start from scratch, i will unroot my phone with htc sync and reload the stock rom.
then i use kitchen and run the tests and everything checks out good.
i auto root and its successful and working.
then say I download fresh 1.1, load it onto the root of the sd card.
Power off the phone then power on while holding home.
apply .zip on sdcard. it applies the fresh 1.1 update says successful
i click reboot, phone goes through startup process everything seems fine, rom loads up i can navigate through menues. except i get force close errors anytime i goto settings, and i have no service, no data or voice signal.
I have tried renaming fresh and other roms to update aswell, i have tried numerous roms, one of the most recent was the TTG cdma hero rom. and i get the same errors.
One interesting thing is the first rom i tried on the cdma hero was eclair 2.1 beta and that worked flawlessly like all the roms i tried on my g1. but i decided to go to fresh and nothing works.

I'm not sure what you mean by unrooting it with htc sync and reloading stock rom? You need to be using the RUU to flash back to stock.
Also if you are using apps2sd then I would recommend temporarily formatting your sdcard back to 100% fat32 (you will lose all data) and then try RUU and flash. Or just grab another sd card and put it in there. If you are using apps2sd and there is an app on your sdcard that is breaking things then it will persist even after a wipe.
1. Partition sdcard to 100% fat32 or replace it with another temporarily
2. Run 1.56 RUU to return to bone stock. Confirm everything works.
3. Run auto-rooter in kitchen. Confirm everything works.
4. Flash a rom, confirm everything works.
If you follow those steps exactly then everything will work out for you.
ok gonna try it again when wiping sd card and foratting to fat32.
any way or know how to get htc sync to recognize my phone?
it picks it up on my vista laptop but on my windows 7 64 bit it doesnt, but atm all i have is my windows 7 one.

ok about to return to stock, when i apply the fresh 1.1 rom after i use kitchen auto rooter i jsut stick it on root of sdcard and DO NOT change file name?
just used to most roms from g1 have to be renamed update.zip

You can do it either way. But you don't have to rename it.
WOW IT WORKS, their had to be something wrong with my sd card, because it wouldnt let me format it.
I had to delete all the files, then install some 3rd party software that would let me format it. idk what was wrong, but working great !!!
so excited finalllly lol
thanks everyone and especially flipz
i am running fresh 1.1 defreshed atm, love it but curious about what AOSP i think its called. what exactly is that, looking at it and seems interesting,
im hoping we get a rom similar to nexus, love the app drawer etc..
It may have worked because when you wiped your Sd, you deleted your apps, if you install too many, you'll have the same issue. I went round and round with mine before I figured it out, then found a thread on it.
AOSP stand for "Android Open Source Project" they are ROMs that are crated and developed from scratch by various developers.
I have played with AOSP builds and I have found that out of them all I like AOSP 1.6 best. The thing you have to rememeber about AOSP builds right now is that A. we still dont have the Kernel source so not everything is working correctly and they can be kinda buggy and B. all the AOSP builds are vanilla android, meaning they dont use sense UI which in my opinion defetes the purpose of having a hero. If I didnt care about sense then I would have gotten a moment.
that being said I will say that the AOSP builds are REALLY fast.
if you want to try a ROM that is close to an AOSP build but still has sense try TTG1.6 its really fast and has a really small memory footprint due to it being almost completely gutted and optimized.

Advice on Magic 32B

Hello All,
I have been pointed to the dream forum in search of a new ROM for my 32B Magic. At the moment I am using cyanogen 4.2.13 with the 10MB RAM hack.
Are there any other ROMS out there that are on par with this ROM?
I find the cyanogen one 100 times better than the original ROM that came with the phone but I always like to experiment.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance
WG-Build, Super D, and TheOfficial
All three are plenty fast, if not faster than CM's latest. And they all have available ram hacks, not sure about Enom's though. Oh well.
Thanks for that - would you say there are any benefits from switching to any of the above?
Speed is the benefit. Try them out!
Since you have AmonRA's latest, perform a Nand + ext backup of the CM build you have right now to make it easier for you to revert back if you don't like those builds
Then after that, simply wipe data, dalvik, and sd ext. Go to partition sd section and repair ext. Enable USB toggle, copy rom to sd, then flash it.
If you don't like the rom, wipe data and do a Nand restore of the CM build you previously backed up.
I have tried the latest of these ROMs. The Official, WG, and Super-D. I think the smoothest and fastest is Super-D 1.6. Haven't tried his beta 1.6.6.
Tried the Super-D 1.6.6 and it was definitely faster than the cyanogen ROM.
A few glitches though so I did a nandroid restore for the first time and was very impressed!
Is there a known bugs page for the above ROMS? I could read through the whole posts but there over 50 pages!
I also noticed that my SD card had not formated when I put the Super-D ROM on even though I did the wipe exactly as BoomBoomPOW suggested.
It also didn't recognise my partition - any ideas?
Going to go ROM crazy now I know how simple the nandroid restore is

Ok - i'll give it a go

Guide to Clearing Android of all Personal data

Hi,
I've got a MyTouch3G running the latest Cyanogenmod. I'm selling the device, and was wondering if anyone has suggestions on how to prepare/wipe it for the next user.
Will a factory reset wipe personal data and leave the ROM? The buyer wants the rooted ROM, so I don't want to touch that... only wipe all of my personal data. I also need to switch out my SD card somehow- but not sure if I need to copy anything over so that Apps2SD will still work on the new SD card.
Help!
Anthony
Just do factory reset. Why u wana swap card?
The reason why I want to swap cards is because the current card is an 8gb, which I would like to keep. I have a 2gb that i would like to give away instead. If I just replace the card, do a factory reset, then remove my sim, i'm afraid when the buyer boots up, the home screen will be filled with apps that are missing...
If i were you, i would just wipe the phone clean then insert 2gb sd, format it with ext if buyer wants a2sd then just reflash cyanogen. he will have a cleaninstall, unless he wants the apps, then youll have to get the ext on the other sd card as well. instructions are on the CM wiki i believe. im typing from phone so youll have to find that yoyrself lol. i havent tried this method, but maybe you can create a nandbackup and ext backup in recovery and restore it on your other sd card? cant hurt to try
So here's a quick update on what's happening.
I tried the Factory Settings option under Settings -> SD Card, but all it did was keep rebooting the phone. So next, I booted into recovery mode, and used the Wipe/Factory Settings option in the Cyanogen Recovery image.... Phone would show splash, show the Enoch loading screen, then just blank for minutes and minutes. Desperate, I pulled Cyanogen 4.2.15.1 off the web, stuck it into an SD card and reflashed it. I'm hoping it'll at least boot into the OS now...
anthony.
After your last step, i believe it should. when you wope via rexovery, you need to flash a rom again, and i dont know much about this but i nwver bother wiping from settings, recovery is nicer!
Ok, so the flash finished, it showed the standard Android boot screen instead of the Enoch (which is normal after a flash) but it's on a black screen again.... 5 minutes so far. =(
Did i really screw something up by doing the Wipe in the recovery image? i remember it said, formatting DATA and CACHE. Not sure if it meant on the SD, or the Phone itself. Either way, it's still dead. Ugh.
calling all android gurus. help!!
Id check for you but im on my phone lol. youre 32b right ? im not sure if 32b have to do this but you may have to flash drc83 as well before cyanogen. yeah im pretty sure you need to flash that then xyanogen. give it a try and hopwfully it works! ps. im assuming youre 32b
remember to wipe again via recovery, then flash drc83 then CM
Yeah, i'm 32b. Thanks for all the advice btw.
Just so i'm definitely on the same page, drc83 is the Tmobile 1.6 update (signed-kila-DRC83-from-CRC1.c41b93c1.zip) ?
Uhhhh when i flashed cm i had a diff filename drc83. google cyanogen wiki, thats where i doqnloaded mine in the past. where did u get that file, cause i didnt get mine from tmobile or anything lol
Hmm... I get a "Verification Failed" error....
Was it from flashing that drc83 file? if so check the wiki
Do you have google talk, this is difficult haha
yeah, anthony[dot]chan at gmail.

[Q] Help with Android+apps2sd

Hi all, I have recently (yesterday) managed to install ANdroid on my HD2 and must say I am really pleased with it!. Just 2 things that I'm stuck with.
1, I followed this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893948 to be able to get android on and used the nand android rom as described. I then started adding loads of apps and quickly ran out of space. Can I use apps2sd with this rom and is so how do I go about it?. Do I have to reflash the rom again, or is there another way?.
If I have to reflash the rom then I would like to find a rom that is as close to stock sense but has the working flip clock. Anyone have any to recommend???.
Either I'm getting thick in my old age or it was alot easier to Root and Rom my Wildfire that I had previously.....
Any help/advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks Scotty.
What Rom are you using? Apps2sd will be in the title of the roms that support it, you need to partition some of your SD to ext4, you can do this via cwm (clockwork mod) then the roms that support it will automatically install apps to SD this is a good Rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010498
In cwm go to advanced then partition, you will lose everything on your SD tho so back it up, your SD really needs to be at least a class 4 ideally 6 8 or 10 tho
Edit/ 1gb partition is plenty, any more will cause problems

yes i can get into recovery. I tried flashing synergy rom. would it be best to just run the ruu and redo the rooting process?
Reformatting is by far the best way. There is a remove sd partition selection in ClockWorkMod and Amon Ra recoverys, but ive never used them, bcuz i have no need to partition my sdcard because i always have 150mb,or more, free space,no matter which rom i use or what apps i add/install(original Evo 4G).Id simply copy the contents of your sdcard to your computer, then reformat the sdcard, and reinstall the content back to your sdcard.I dont suggest the remove sdcard partition method simply because ive never used it. Good luck.
thank ibcary we got that far now i'm just stuck on the splash screen. the reason for wanting to get rid of the partion is cause it was just saying b. not giving me any info on the card.
If u can get to recovery your doing good. Use Amon Ra if possible. CWMod doesnt always do a full wipe. id try going into recovery and perform a full wipe, wipe dalvik, wipe data,etc,etc...Then download a rom that u know works and is stable. I like MikGs Sense 2.1/3.0 roms, but which rom all depends on your device. Choose a rom thats well known to be a good, stable rom.Try flashing the newly downloaded rom from your sdcard thru recovery and if that doesnt work, then id try using a new/different sdcard. Sdcards dont last forever, and some are downright junk. As long as u can get to your bootloader theres still hope. Im sure your device is ok,but it could be a bad sdcard or a bad rom download. Thats why i recomended a new rom download, and if that doesnt work then try a new sdcard. Goodluck
ok. it was a new sd card that i partioned. am download a rom that I have used before and never had any problem with. but if this doesn't work should i just unroot and run the ruu and start over again?
how do i load the rom onto the sd card since it gets stuck at the splash screen??

once you have root and busybox installed correctly theres not much unrooting and then rooting again will solve.Except to return your device to stock, and to unroot i usually flash the unrooted stock rom. U can try the Root Checker app from the Market just to make sure your rooted and have busybox installed correctly. However custom roms are already rooted and have busybox installed correctly. If its a new sdcard id still try another sdcard. Use an sdcard u know is good. I bought a few cheap sdcards that were 8GB class 10 becuz i got a great deal on them,10 for $110.but out of the 10,only 7 were even recognized by my Evo or my HP dv7 Netbook and worked. Also i highly doubt they are class 10,bcuz my SanDisk 16GB C10 sdcard is much faster, and older too. So just bcuz its new doesnt mean its good.If it still wont work after a fresh wipe using Amon Ra recovery,NOT ClockWork Mod recovery, and a fresh/newly downloaded rom flashed from a different sdcard using Amon Ra recovery to fully wipe, then flash the newly downloaded rom from the different sdcard to your device. That shud work, but if it doesnt u can try reinstalling or updating your recovery.
As usual im a little behind again with my post. Good luck

First: Did you partition all the card or only a certain amount ?
Second: Almost all the Custom recoveries have format card so do that. Then boot back in recovery and mount your card from recovery.
Third: Do not run RUU Period.
Fourth: Wipe all, cache, dalvik and all 2or3 times.
You wont get stuck on splash. since you wipe all give it a bit of time to check everything about 5-10 minutes

on partition the card i just hit the power button on all of it. got a custom rom back on my phone now it is up and running.
I would suggest using this program when formatting your SD ..
https://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter_3/
Just and FYI, when partitioning your SD Card, it will wipe the contents. So you'll need to partition SD Card and then move over any content you want to install.
