Guide to Clearing Android of all Personal data - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hi,
I've got a MyTouch3G running the latest Cyanogenmod. I'm selling the device, and was wondering if anyone has suggestions on how to prepare/wipe it for the next user.
Will a factory reset wipe personal data and leave the ROM? The buyer wants the rooted ROM, so I don't want to touch that... only wipe all of my personal data. I also need to switch out my SD card somehow- but not sure if I need to copy anything over so that Apps2SD will still work on the new SD card.
Help!
Anthony

Just do factory reset. Why u wana swap card?

The reason why I want to swap cards is because the current card is an 8gb, which I would like to keep. I have a 2gb that i would like to give away instead. If I just replace the card, do a factory reset, then remove my sim, i'm afraid when the buyer boots up, the home screen will be filled with apps that are missing...

If i were you, i would just wipe the phone clean then insert 2gb sd, format it with ext if buyer wants a2sd then just reflash cyanogen. he will have a cleaninstall, unless he wants the apps, then youll have to get the ext on the other sd card as well. instructions are on the CM wiki i believe. im typing from phone so youll have to find that yoyrself lol. i havent tried this method, but maybe you can create a nandbackup and ext backup in recovery and restore it on your other sd card? cant hurt to try

So here's a quick update on what's happening.
I tried the Factory Settings option under Settings -> SD Card, but all it did was keep rebooting the phone. So next, I booted into recovery mode, and used the Wipe/Factory Settings option in the Cyanogen Recovery image.... Phone would show splash, show the Enoch loading screen, then just blank for minutes and minutes. Desperate, I pulled Cyanogen 4.2.15.1 off the web, stuck it into an SD card and reflashed it. I'm hoping it'll at least boot into the OS now...
anthony.

After your last step, i believe it should. when you wope via rexovery, you need to flash a rom again, and i dont know much about this but i nwver bother wiping from settings, recovery is nicer!

Ok, so the flash finished, it showed the standard Android boot screen instead of the Enoch (which is normal after a flash) but it's on a black screen again.... 5 minutes so far. =(
Did i really screw something up by doing the Wipe in the recovery image? i remember it said, formatting DATA and CACHE. Not sure if it meant on the SD, or the Phone itself. Either way, it's still dead. Ugh.
calling all android gurus. help!!

Id check for you but im on my phone lol. youre 32b right ? im not sure if 32b have to do this but you may have to flash drc83 as well before cyanogen. yeah im pretty sure you need to flash that then xyanogen. give it a try and hopwfully it works! ps. im assuming youre 32b

remember to wipe again via recovery, then flash drc83 then CM

Yeah, i'm 32b. Thanks for all the advice btw.
Just so i'm definitely on the same page, drc83 is the Tmobile 1.6 update (signed-kila-DRC83-from-CRC1.c41b93c1.zip) ?

Uhhhh when i flashed cm i had a diff filename drc83. google cyanogen wiki, thats where i doqnloaded mine in the past. where did u get that file, cause i didnt get mine from tmobile or anything lol

Hmm... I get a "Verification Failed" error....

Was it from flashing that drc83 file? if so check the wiki

Do you have google talk, this is difficult haha

yeah, anthony[dot]chan at gmail.

[Q] Rooted Wildfire won't go past bootscreen.

Hello all, new to the site so I hope I haven't posted this in the wrong place.
I used Unrevoked on my Wildfire yesterday, got it rooted and did a backup using titanium. So far so good.
Downloaded: 0001_WildPuzzleROM_v8.0.11.zip and threw it on the SD card.
Did the sound-down button + power / recovery / install zip from sdc / found my new rom, installed the thing without errors and booted it.
But now it won't go past the HTC bootscreen?
I have to take the battery out, it just hangs at the bootscreen.
I then thougt "oh happy days, I'll just do the recovery and then load the backup I took by using titanium.
same story..
I am doing something wrong but now after using 4 hours on google I've found about 60 different solutions and I'm none the wiser.

Did you do a full wipe before you flashed...? Wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache.
Uhm.. no.
I thought the "wipe data+settings+cache" would also clear out my SD card (where my rom is)?
So to proceed from here, the next order of business I'll be doing is:
wipe data+settings+cache and THEN load the puzzle.zip onto the WF, correct?
No a full wipe only clears out phone memory. Do a search beforehand.
And the rom gets installed to your phone memory not sd card.
1. Do a full wipe.
2. Go to install zip from sd card
3. Select rom and flash it.
firstly, it may take somewhere in the line of 5 to 10 minutes on first boot after flashing a new rom. Make sure you waited enough.
After waiting more than 15 minutes, read this:
I was a happy flashing bastard until I also got the bootloop, after doing a restore.
I then put on my wizard hat and pull out the SD card, slap onto it the last rom I knew it worked (openfire in my case).
After the first boot I connect the phone to the pc, I download a shipped rom from http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Buzz/ ( I downloaded the last one, http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Buz...3.55.24H_3.35.19.25_release_151892_signed.exe in my case )
I launch the flash utility, and watch as my wildfire turns stock, unrooted, once more.
Some recommend doing this before installing any custom rom. This and a full wipe of the sd card.
But not me. It would make the rom flashing rather time consuming.
Enjoy!
I owe you guys an update (winterparty came in the way (or actually not, I was the geek sitting in the corner fumbling with my phone ))
Anyways, I did a full data/setting/cache wipe, ran the puzzle.zip and voila.
It's now been running for 28H and is still doing great.
Angry birds is a little bit better (joy!).
The whole feel around the new sw is such an improvement.
Thanks for all your help and I'll bookmark that "return to stock" link at once. Thanks again!

Need help after trying to flash a ROM, now stuck at HTC logo

Hi there, i think i failed at trying to flash a ROM to my desire HD.
I followed the process for temp and then permroot and it all seemed fine. Read further to wipe all data so i did. Then decided to make a backup and that went fine aswell. Upon reboot it just hangs at the HTC logo. I have to pull the battery just to turn it off.
I can boot into recovery mode and tried to restore to my backup but same problem. Foolishly i did all this while waiting for the revolution ROM to download so not even sure how to copy it to the sd card and trying to flash it to the ROM to see if that gets its going.
Would really like some help on this =/
Spose the question is, now that i cant actually start the phone apart from into recovery mode, is there a way to copy the ROM to the sd card still?
Or any ideas on getting it to boot further then just the HTC logo?
help with images attached
wiping all data cause you to lose whatever is on there, inclusive of ROM etc, it sounds like it has nothing too boot.
you can mount your SD via CWM (clockwork Recovery) by going to mounts & Storage and also mount USB and it will then show up as it normally would on your PC if you had a rom.
see photos to guide you
OH FYI youll need to format;
- Boot
- System
- Data
- Cache
Thanks, im able to copy the rom over now, ill flash to it and see how it goes.
Thanks, all is working now

Download Cyanogen's CM7 (doesn't matter which one) and store to the SD card.
Download the Google Applications and store it the SD card
Wipe the handset via the recovery image, then flash the CM7, then flash the G/apps....
Once that is done go the market and install Clockwork ROM manager and re-flash the recovery image.
Then go to THIS thread and install 3.0.0.6
Then wipe and do your restore and it will be back to how you want it.

yes i can get into recovery. I tried flashing synergy rom. would it be best to just run the ruu and redo the rooting process?
Reformatting is by far the best way. There is a remove sd partition selection in ClockWorkMod and Amon Ra recoverys, but ive never used them, bcuz i have no need to partition my sdcard because i always have 150mb,or more, free space,no matter which rom i use or what apps i add/install(original Evo 4G).Id simply copy the contents of your sdcard to your computer, then reformat the sdcard, and reinstall the content back to your sdcard.I dont suggest the remove sdcard partition method simply because ive never used it. Good luck.
thank ibcary we got that far now i'm just stuck on the splash screen. the reason for wanting to get rid of the partion is cause it was just saying b. not giving me any info on the card.
If u can get to recovery your doing good. Use Amon Ra if possible. CWMod doesnt always do a full wipe. id try going into recovery and perform a full wipe, wipe dalvik, wipe data,etc,etc...Then download a rom that u know works and is stable. I like MikGs Sense 2.1/3.0 roms, but which rom all depends on your device. Choose a rom thats well known to be a good, stable rom.Try flashing the newly downloaded rom from your sdcard thru recovery and if that doesnt work, then id try using a new/different sdcard. Sdcards dont last forever, and some are downright junk. As long as u can get to your bootloader theres still hope. Im sure your device is ok,but it could be a bad sdcard or a bad rom download. Thats why i recomended a new rom download, and if that doesnt work then try a new sdcard. Goodluck
ok. it was a new sd card that i partioned. am download a rom that I have used before and never had any problem with. but if this doesn't work should i just unroot and run the ruu and start over again?
how do i load the rom onto the sd card since it gets stuck at the splash screen??

once you have root and busybox installed correctly theres not much unrooting and then rooting again will solve.Except to return your device to stock, and to unroot i usually flash the unrooted stock rom. U can try the Root Checker app from the Market just to make sure your rooted and have busybox installed correctly. However custom roms are already rooted and have busybox installed correctly. If its a new sdcard id still try another sdcard. Use an sdcard u know is good. I bought a few cheap sdcards that were 8GB class 10 becuz i got a great deal on them,10 for $110.but out of the 10,only 7 were even recognized by my Evo or my HP dv7 Netbook and worked. Also i highly doubt they are class 10,bcuz my SanDisk 16GB C10 sdcard is much faster, and older too. So just bcuz its new doesnt mean its good.If it still wont work after a fresh wipe using Amon Ra recovery,NOT ClockWork Mod recovery, and a fresh/newly downloaded rom flashed from a different sdcard using Amon Ra recovery to fully wipe, then flash the newly downloaded rom from the different sdcard to your device. That shud work, but if it doesnt u can try reinstalling or updating your recovery.
As usual im a little behind again with my post. Good luck

First: Did you partition all the card or only a certain amount ?
Second: Almost all the Custom recoveries have format card so do that. Then boot back in recovery and mount your card from recovery.
Third: Do not run RUU Period.
Fourth: Wipe all, cache, dalvik and all 2or3 times.
You wont get stuck on splash. since you wipe all give it a bit of time to check everything about 5-10 minutes

on partition the card i just hit the power button on all of it. got a custom rom back on my phone now it is up and running.
I would suggest using this program when formatting your SD ..

Just and FYI, when partitioning your SD Card, it will wipe the contents. So you'll need to partition SD Card and then move over any content you want to install.

[Q] Stuck at Samsung Screen

Can someone please help me? I have a Samsung focus that was recently acting up.. Games wouldn't open etc.. so I decided to reset it.. After I reset it.. Its now stuck at the Samsung logo after resetting.. I am guessing that I need to reflash it.. If so, I need to make sure my battery isn't dead. Does the Phone charge while showing the Samsung boot logo?? Help Please..
I dont have a focus but with a Google search looks bout the same as I wud do on my epic ..found this if it helps http://forums.androidcentral.com/dr...ks/130642-help-stuck-samsung-boot-screen.html
Alright, heres what I did.1. Rebooted in*CWM2. Wiped data/factory reset3. Wiped cache partition4. Wiped dalvik cacheAt this point I couldn't reflash because I forgot I couldn't access my SD card, I kept getting the "e:can't mount /sdcard" message whenver I went to install zip from sd card.5. Took off the back and pooped out the SD card and put it right back in. Seemed to work6. Flashed 2.07. Flashed kejar's sd card fix8. Rebooted through*CWMPhone starts up, do all the set up stuff, but still can't access my sd card or anything. Booted back into*CWM*just to see and was getting the "e:can't mount /sdcard" error again and couldnt reflash anything, so back to step 1.Here's a list of other things I have done since the original crap out a few days ago that might be affecting this.*1. Yesterday I tried reflashing 2.0 and it seemed to be boot looping again. So I just wiped data and cache partition and flashed 1.9.1 that I had on my SD card. Was having the same problems so that was the only time I tried it. Not sure if built in kernels might affect anything or whatever.2. After it seemed like I had a stable 2.0 again last night. I flashed blue*CWM*because I've had yellow this whole time. I also flashed EP1 radios through ODIN because I was planning on going to GG 2.1 (I was following your video dave! its awesome btw*).I'm not sure at what point I lost access to my SD card. Ive read a lot this morning about voodoo lag fix affecting things. Could this be a problem with what I've done?

If you have decided to reflash then use ROM provided by 'voluptuary' (3.10a). And moreover, to flash, it would not matter if your battery is getting charged. Just plug the device to your PC using the USB cable and flash the device.
Be VERY sure you flash the correct ROM for your phone. If you have a version 1.3, then ONLY flash 1.3 ROMs to it. If you have a version 1.4, then ONLY flash 1.4 ROMs to it. You can find the version number under the battery on the sticker. If you flash the wrong version of ROM to it, you will end up with a brick.
When having problems like this, I would recommend flashing the Stock ROM to it first to set everything back to normal. Then, if that works fine, go to custom ROMs if desired. Stock flashing will replace everything back to new settings, including spl, radio, etc... Some of the custom ROMs are truly worth flashing, FASTER, stable, nice features.
