Wash your hands. Haha... but seriously. The screen is oleophobic which means it will repel most of your skin oils. Therefore, unless you have skin that is more oily than usual you shouldn't have a problem. Your hands are probably oily from touching your food, face, hair, etc.
I just switched from an iPhone and the iPhone repelled fingerprints A LOT better...
I find this screen to be far more opeophobic. occasionally, if you have smudges all over the screen, I find a few droplets of water wiped across the screen works wonders.

Theres something called State TAX. for me it was 49$ (NY).

He also said a few drops... My HDTV specifies cleaning the screen with a few drops of water also and it was much more expensive than the Nexus. Anyway, lint free cloth and a few drops of water = win.

Well, I would put it on the cloth first, but unless you are a bumbling fool a single drop of water on your screen is not going to wreck your phone.

I put a few splashes when applying my BSE and it works still. whats a drop of water to the screen lol if your careful things wont go wrong.
I bought the privacy screen protector from T-mobile... No more fingerprints! Makes the screen a bit darker but I can't stand fingerprints!

NO WAY is this screen coated with an oleophobic finish. I've played around with an iPhone 3GS before, so I know how that compares. I challenge you to find some proof from HTC that this has an oleophobic coating on the screen.
That being said, this screen is an oil magnet, and my skin is probably less oily than the average guy. The only solution is to wipe it frequently with a soft cloth, or slap on a screen protector, as others have already stated.

no they dont, and neither is one needed. The Nexus One uses gorilla glass. search on youtube for nexus one scratch test.
Also im not saying that water on your screen will definatly damage your phone, im just saying that I personally would not put water anywhere on my phone.
I just buff it on my pants occasionally.

My experience with the phone has been almost completely opposite, and most of the time I actually find it hard to put prints on the screen. I briefly used a screen protector, but found it attracted far more fingerprints and smudging.
Sucks if yours is somehow different. You may also want to try wiping your screen with a few drops of water.
I would love if someone came up with such a screenprotector that would work better in direct sunlight and would not attract finger prints at all..
If anyone comes up with something similar, i would greatly appriciate it..

Maybe my fingers are just greasier than yours... After washing my hands, it was fine, but within an hour my fingers would be oily again. Figured it was normal...

There was a video arround with someone abusing his HD2 by trying to scratch his HD2 screen with all sorts of things... the result was that it does not scratch....
than, how come I have to little scratches on my HD2?... all I do it's keeping it in it's own pocket with nothing else... but still I got the little scratches... maybe I touched it with something.... but still considering the abuse in the above mentioned video I don't see how it could happend this...

There are plenty of threads for this topic already. Nevertheless it is just scratch RESISTANT, not scratch PROOF. So it can scratch. It only takes f.e. the right kind of sand grains in your pocket. Those can be pretty hard, harder than the glass of your HD2. There are many things harder than a hardened glass panel.
Use a screen protector. It also helps you to have less fingerprint smearing on your shiny display.
discussed already, as long as you abuse it with materials less hard than tempered glass it's not going to be damaged, but particles of terrain or sand or any other material that for any reason ends in your pockets and is harder than tempered glass will scratch the display.
Only diamond is truly unscratchable, other than with another diamond or a laser beam

Yeah, those videos are biased towards protecting the HD2 from scratches.
The video of the guy scratching the CD case showed that he applied a ton of force to the case to get it to scratch. Then when he tried scratching the HD2, he applied a lighter amount of force; he was scared of breaking or scratching the HD2.
ok.. the thing is... either use a screen protector either take good care of your screen.. like extra care...
why anybody would think the screen is scratch proof is beyond me.....
I never paid attention to my phones. All of they got small scratches on the screen after a few days, and some scratches on the paint a few hours after buying it. My HD2 is still bright and shiny without any scratches. I like it. This phone is Trudi proof

The only mark my phone has picked up in the last 6 months is a small dent in the edge right next to the screen halfway up on the right hand side. Which was a result of me walking into a fridge
I've never used a screen protector and the screen is still as sleek and smooth as it was out of the box. I'm not claiming it is scratchproof but it must be very resillient.
I was really really really really lucky not to smash the screen because the actual casing of the phone is solid and it must have taken a hell of a knock to dent it.Needless to say the hand covers the phone everytime I walk past that fridge now.
Please hold back your remarks about screen protectors this was a replacement, only the second day I had it, didnt have a chance to purchase one.

Think you could post a pic of the damage? if it's not too deep, i've heard of people using this product called applesauce that is supposed to give really good results. Maybe try that out and see how it works. Good luck to you, hope you get the scuffs out

Yeah, just thought of this after I read this post but you can also try the stuff that is used to fill in cracks for car windshields.

The screen on the evo is made of gorilla glass, not plastic. Therefore acid based compounds such as applesauce or lcd scuff removers on the market would not work. The famous banana slice/peel trick doesn't work here either. Some compounds for watches only clean the surface of the glass and remove dirt from within the scratches, making the scratch less visible.
Your best bet is to clean the glass to remove all dirt then install a screen protector like invisibleshield to mask the scratches. This will work better since a liquid solution (usually 1 part soap and 9 parts water) is applied to the screen so you can squeegee out all the air during installation. The only downside to this is the texture feels like apple skin and screen clarity is affected...maybe 15-20%.

Not sure if it's made of Gorilla glass-- not saying that it scratches easily (because it probably doesn't), but I found I had a two very,very slight surface scratches on the screen after babying it for a month (always put it in an empty pocket with no keys/coins/etc, never set it face down, etc).
In any case, I wouldn't try using toothpaste, brasso, or any other solution on the screen except for an eyeglass/electronic screen cleaner as you'll probably end up creating more noticable scratches. Just clean the screen as well as you can, and throw on a screen protector, and you'll probably never notice the scratch-- most very small scratches are only noticable when viewing the screen at a very oblique angle to catch a reflected light source, and the screen protector blocks this.
Also, I wouldn't recommend the ZAGG. I had never used a ZAGG screen protector before, but have heard great things about them, and I'm not particularly picky or sensitive about screen protectors. However, I found the Zagg protector had a horrible rubbery feel to it, and gave the screen a really bad and noticable orange peel effect (actually, the effect seemed more like the screen was behind a 1/4" layer of ice). I put on a cheapo $1.99 screen protector from Gizmo Dorks (on Amazon.com), and the difference was like night and day-- the screen was just as smooth and clear as the original glass.
I have a few too... Leave it be and after a couple weeks you'll forget you even have them.
Can we buy the glass yet for this phone? I replace iPhone 3G and 3GS glass on an almost daily basis at work.

He might... but I'm not sure a $100 deductible + limited further coverage is worth a few small scuffs. I guess it depends on how bad they are, but if they are anything like mine it totally would not be worth it.

Since the debate is going back n forth about the glass.....what is the difference between the two? Sure i could search but since there's a debate I think it should be explained this thread...
I looked all over and can't find anything confirming it's Gorilla Glass so I assume it's not. Plus I wouldn't find so many people with easily cracked screens if it was...

Hi all,i just discovered some light scratches on my glass...they are on left side,mostly on "black part",luckily.
I always used a case,microfiber or the (very cheap) plastic case that samsung gave for free after presentation.
It never fell down,just a hit on the bedside table,but it's polished simple wood.
Anyway,is there a way to "fix" it? I hear people saying they put the phone in the pocket with keys and no case,and no scratches at all...that's so sad
I guess i have to deal with it,but still hope for some miracoulus fix...

It is too late for the scratches, but why don't you protect your screen with a film? There are some excellent products in the market that are almost invisible to the eye and the finger...
Let's don't forget that the SGS screen is scratch resistant, not scratch proof.
I'm not Gorilla glass spoke person, but it's still another plastic with higher durability.
basic physics law still applicable, as long as there is a sudden pressure apply on the glass, there are chances that the screen may cracked / scratched.
we all need to take care of it. I don't think there is any fix you can apply

Within a week of owning mine I found a nice big scratch down the middle of the screen. Really, really, annoying. I put it in a soft case all the time, only got it out when I used it, so I've no idea where it came from.
Strange thing is when I clean the screen with a microfibre cloth it disappears. Completely! Only to return once I touch it again with my grubby fingers.
There is no fix, and any you do attempt will put you at serious risk of making it worse. Heard nightmare situations where people have used repair kits or toothpaste and it's left a nice big scuff where there was once a tiny scratch.
Got a Martin Fields screen protector on at the moment. Does affect the display quality but not massively, and is a fingerprint and grease magnet, but at least it's protecting the screen, and the scratch is no longer visible.
Great guys, now I have to invest in a screenprotector as well. Doh....

You may find that it is from the case, not neccessarily scratching the screen but rubbing it more along that area than the rest. When you touch it the grease from your fingers 'sticks' more or less to that area than the rest, causing it to become visible.
I had a huge scratch on mine so I used the banana trick, 2 days later some ape stole it

The screen is one of the best things abt the device imo! I dont use any screen protector nor case....and it still is spotless! Ive demonstrated to so many people by scratching the display with my car keys....nothing yet maybe i should tone down my demonstrations just a little bit
I abuse my phone unprotected. I already had my fair share of trouble with micro dust on a previous phone using a cover. Nowadays I just trie to remember to only put my sgs in my right pocket.
I guess that thecresta and i have the same scratch-type:it's light and becomes more visible when i swipe over it...the screen gets "dirty" due to skin "oil",the scratch remains clean :|

Sorry to hear about your scratch. FWIW I have never used a screen protector on any of my iPhone's or the SGS. So far so good. Keep it away from ladies with diamond rings and keep it away from sand. Two biggies that will ruin your day.

I noticed on the screen when I breathe hot moist air on to it, there are streaks of lines running across everywhere and I'm assuming it's thinning on the oleophobic screen. I just bought it about a week ago, should I replace it? I ordered a carbon fiber from skinomi and it hasn't arrived, and I really like using the device.
Does anyone use warm water with detergent to clean their screen by any chance?
As far as I know, you're not suppose to use chemicals on your screen.

Also, all those lines that you mentioned, that run across the display are part of the digitizer, not the oleo-phobic surface.

snap. get a good glasses cloth and gently wipe from side to side. i find circle leaves smear stains which can sometimes look like scratches and freak you out!
i've also heard that to effectively clean glasses, you should apply a bit of water - a fine mist - but i never do, and i'm happy with the screen tbh.
also, when i first took the plastic cover thing off the screen i found what looked like a bumpy textured surface. maybe that's the cause of your smear stains?
but, damn, the screen is so bright, does it really matter

What about soap? I heard using warm water with soap will get rid of finger oil completely off the screen.

If the screen is sticky and you absolutely have to use something to help get it off, you should use water, preferably pure distilled water as tap water can have some grit to it as well as trace chemicals.
Never ever use soap, alcohol, goo gone, or anything of the sort. Probably shouldn't even use saliva.

I find the best way to clean anything I have is to breathe on it than use micro fiber cloth while it's still moist from my breath.
Gets smudges off everything.
Hey guys,as title says(kind of anyway),I've had enough of the oleophobic coating on the SGS2.Fingerprints stay on screen no matter(I have very oily skin,unfortunately) and it's not any better than my Desire HD for that matter.Not that it bothers me for that,but it SCRATCHES like hell.I already have more fine scrathces on my GS2 after 2 weeks than on my DHD after 7 months.So I want to remove the oleophobic coating.
Now,I know it's done somehow by cleaning the screen using certain cleaning stuff,but what cleaning stuff?Can I use a window cleaner or something?And should I wipe it with a fiber cloth?

OP, take my advice , do NOT do it! You think the coating is not helping, wait till you remove it! It will be 100 times worse, literally!
If you do decide to rid the screen of the coating - I succeeded (on SGS1) with Chlorine toilet bowl cleaning liquid, but be very careful to not get it inside speakers/mikes. All the scratches remained though, mine were in the glass, not the coating.
You want that coating on there. Just get a screen protector and maybe a matte one if the finger prints bother you.

Yeah...Well,I found Zaggs(they even came to Greece...Oh well!) but I cannot find Steinheils.What about Belkin?They have a matte overlay that I think would be nice.
Also,what do you mean that Zaggs are the worst for sensitivity?Is it harder to select something on the screen with a protector on?

When I got burgled the police said finger prints actually very difficult to pickup because finger tips don't have sweat glands. Relies on someone touching their face or hair or rubbing their palms together. This its not meant to be pointed comment but as you offered a reason, Try doing less of that

Oh sh!t,I didn't know that.And I was blaming my fingers for nothing?
Well,I'll try and touch my face less.When I sweat(especially now in the summer with the high temperatures) it gets oily like hell.It will get better with time(It's a puberty thing partially like acme),but for now it's killing me.
Thank you for the heads up though.Finally I found cops usefull!
My advice: polish your face often .
What i do is clean the screen with my shirt so now and then. Some days its worse then others...
Can I ask how you guys manage to scratch your screen? I've got *very* long nails (I'm a girl ), never bother with screen protectors and I've yet to scratch a screen (HD2 stayed pristine for over 18 months, so is the S2 after a month) and shock horror, I don't always put my phone in a case before flinging it in my handbag though it's usually in a separate pocket... As for fingerprints, well a wipe on my jeans or t-shirt usually takes care of that.

A girl around here?I'm impressed!
Anyway,I too have long fingernails on my right hand because I play the guitar,but they don't damage the screen.I go to the beach very often and sand particles find their way everywhere.Now THEY do damage. ;-)

Guys hands tend to have more dirt (from putting their hands on the bench, on the ground or at the beach). As a result, there will be one or two tiny sand particles which then scratches the screen when they use the phone.

did you try alcohol and windex?
alcohol will remove the oleophobic coating, but very slowly. you'll end up with a haze.
i used meguiar's scratchx 2.0 to remove a scratch, not realizing there was a coating. result was a hazy ring where i had removed the coating.
tried rainx, with improved the slick feel but also caused more of the haze effect (alcohol). ended up using scratchx to remove the whole coating, using a flashlight to check, and putting a realook protector on. luckily the result is fantastic.
that said, don't remove any coating unless you really really have to. it doesn't seem like it but it is way better at preventing smudges than just glass.

A good friend of mine is a dermatologist. You and/or the cops are wrong. Maybe they tell that story to everybody so they don't get their hopes to high.
You can test for youself though. Wash you hands with antibacterial soap and dry them with and air handdryer. Hold your hand steady for 10 minutes without touching anything and then see i you'll leave prints on you phone
