Repair small scratch in screen...

Hello,
Does anyone know of a way I can fix a small (2/3") light scratch on my Nexus' screen without replacing the whole thing? The scratch is just visible enough to be annoying and can barely be felt when running your fingernail over it to give you an idea of how deep/shallow it is. I was hoping maybe some good glass polish and microfiber cloth might smooth it out...
I also heard that a good screen protector can pretty much hide small scratches as well. I thought about getting the seidio cover, but really wanted to repair the scratch first.

Polish would be the best bet I reckon.

I thought the Nexus' screen was near scratch resistant (excluding falls, concrete, sand, etc)?

Anything harder than glass can scratch it. I used to think that rubbing it on my jeans was safe. But I think there was a small particle of something. I scratched it Barely visible though, wouldn't even call it a hairline scratch. But there was something there that could scratch the glass, a small particle of sand or even a glass dust particle or something would do it.

i have a bunch of very tiny micro scratches that can only be seen in direct sunlight. and i've babied my phone like no other. nothing except my finger tip has touched the screen. i'd like if others can test their phones in the sunlight to compare. no its not the diagonal touch digitizer. these scratches are vertical and some horizontal, right near the center of the screen, where you would scroll on web pages etc.
since i've literally babied this phone, and these scratches keep getting worse by the day, i can only assume that this is normal and everybody is having these scratches. i have probably 40-50 at this point.
FYI in a normally lit room, my screen looks FANTASTIC, and you would not for one second think there is any such micro scratches. but in sunlight, sure enough, they are there, only can see them at a certain angle.
also i cannot feel these scratches, they are really that small where its not noticeable. but they are absolutely from scrolling the screen. and i touch this thing so lightly its like i barely touch it at all!!

Thanks for all the replies. I have no idea how it got scratched...it resides alone in my front pocket most of the day. I ordered a seidio clear screen protector for it so hopefully it won't get anymore...
Mine are only visible in direct light, too. I can't see them when the screen is on, but when the sun or a light source shines directly on it I can see them. They aren't bad...just noticeable to be annoying...Haha.
Anyway, I guess I will just live with it since I am not very good with polishing compounds and will probably just end up with lots of swirl marks. I just hope they scratches don't grow into cracks with day-to-day use.
Edited: It does make me feel better that I am not the only one with scratch issues.

I recommend iDrops. I have a bottle at my disposal and I have removed all kinds of scratches from my various phones and electronics.. Luckily I haven't had to use it on my Nexus yet, but I have no worries that'll it'll work great if I ever need them.
It's a little pricey, but well worth it for how well they work (as long as you follow the directions and spend the TIME it takes to remove the scratches)

Sorry since the scratch I got I've put a screen protector on it. Can't even see the scratch I had and I can't see any faint ones in the middle.

if you are talking about the diagonal lines visible in bright sunlight those are the touchscreen digitizer.

Ive been babying mine aswell, never in pocket with keys or anything, come to notice there is one tiny scratch right on the edge of the screen(black part, left side midscreen) but its there nonetheless, just an eye sore blah

No, you can Just do the spot where the scratch is.
My best suggestion is to spend time on it. Count on at least an hour of polishing it.

Scratch resistant!... Yeah right!

There was a video arround with someone abusing his HD2 by trying to scratch his HD2 screen with all sorts of things... the result was that it does not scratch....
than, how come I have to little scratches on my HD2?... all I do it's keeping it in it's own pocket with nothing else... but still I got the little scratches... maybe I touched it with something.... but still considering the abuse in the above mentioned video I don't see how it could happend this...
So, after all.... how scratch resistant is the HD2's screen?

There are plenty of threads for this topic already. Nevertheless it is just scratch RESISTANT, not scratch PROOF. So it can scratch. It only takes f.e. the right kind of sand grains in your pocket. Those can be pretty hard, harder than the glass of your HD2. There are many things harder than a hardened glass panel.
Use a screen protector. It also helps you to have less fingerprint smearing on your shiny display.

discussed already, as long as you abuse it with materials less hard than tempered glass it's not going to be damaged, but particles of terrain or sand or any other material that for any reason ends in your pockets and is harder than tempered glass will scratch the display.
Only diamond is truly unscratchable, other than with another diamond or a laser beam

Same here, I went through several screen protectors before I realized what the problem was. I carry my diamonds in a little baggie now.

Yeah, those videos are biased towards protecting the HD2 from scratches.
The video of the guy scratching the CD case showed that he applied a ton of force to the case to get it to scratch. Then when he tried scratching the HD2, he applied a lighter amount of force; he was scared of breaking or scratching the HD2.

ok.. the thing is... either use a screen protector either take good care of your screen.. like extra care...

why anybody would think the screen is scratch proof is beyond me.....

I never paid attention to my phones. All of they got small scratches on the screen after a few days, and some scratches on the paint a few hours after buying it. My HD2 is still bright and shiny without any scratches. I like it. This phone is Trudi proof

The only mark my phone has picked up in the last 6 months is a small dent in the edge right next to the screen halfway up on the right hand side. Which was a result of me walking into a fridge
I've never used a screen protector and the screen is still as sleek and smooth as it was out of the box. I'm not claiming it is scratchproof but it must be very resillient.
I was really really really really lucky not to smash the screen because the actual casing of the phone is solid and it must have taken a hell of a knock to dent it.Needless to say the hand covers the phone everytime I walk past that fridge now.

[Q] Screen protector

Sad day in the life of SlightlyAmused. Put the phone in my coat pocket and it happened. One good size scratch down the edge, now it don't bug me too much but I figure it would be best to get a zagg on this bad boy asap. The problem is I cannot find any online!
Does anyone know where I can find some?
Also, for those who use them, will zaggs make my screen feel "draggy" or does it still feel natural?

The screen. I have read that if there is sand between a credit card or something it can happen. I think its just resistant and not proof.

I had a Zagg on my N900 and it did feel a little rubbery/draggy. Either you get used to it or it wears off, not sure which but the feeling goes away.
I really want to find a screen protecter that is exactly like the ones supplied with the HTC Hermes and Kaiser in the box. Best screen protectors i ever had. Barely even noticed they were there and they lasted the time i had the phones.

I found a review on Steinheil protectors and they look good. Sadly they don't have any for Defy. Oh well, maybe next month.
Just be careful around sand and hard surfaces. I have read alot online so far that people have scratched the glass on other devices with gorilla with only sand in their pocket or on the beach face down. Everything else doesn't seem to effect it.

Looks great and the reviews are all pretty good. The whole finger print thing dosnt really bother me as I usually wipe it off after I use it, or during it (hard to play casino kid 2 with finger prints imo).

hmmm, those that believe that Corning Gorilla Glass is scratch proof are gullible, and mislead by Motorolas claim that the Defy is dust scratch and water therefore life proof, I have a Samsung Preston here that begs to differ thanks to the dirty big diagonal scratch down it's face
and I also have a still camera that Olympus swears to be "waterproof" despite the angry protests of almost everyone else who bought one which just goes to show you can never believe what a company says about their product
if you're wise you would fit a screen protector to it the very moment you unbox it like I did with my Sex1
and will do with my new Defy When I get it

imo phone never feels as responsive with a screen protector on - I have always used them when I had non touch screen phones, and when I got my Hero I tried a number of different ones and always felt they weren't working very well, when I just decided to start using it without one, it felt like a different phone. I haven't bothered with the Defy, not because of the scratch proof claims. I think the best defence is just to get in the habit of putting it in an empty pocket etc.

I feel the same about them until I put a realook protector on my vibrant. It's pretty awesome.

Why not put your phone in an empty pocket? Hell, I did that with my dumbphones before touchscreen was a readily available feature.
Plus, isn't putting a screen protector on Gorilla Glass like putting tissue paper over kevlar?

I am so used to just tossing it in my pocket that I dont really think about whats in there. When I rocked my BB9700 I would always throw it in the holster and I think I will be looking around tomorrow for either a generic screen protector or case for the phone.
I must admit the phone can take a beating.

I got a couple of decent sized scratches from a lighter in my pocket within 3 days (the perils of smoking!).
I just received my skinomi a couple of days ago and am most impressed so far. Using the wet one, I have no bubbles and cannot see the scratches now. It feels smooth on the finger, shows less finger prints and I have lost no accuracy. I will be interested to see how well the self healing thing works, as every other cover I have used ends up covered in scratches within a week.
I will post how it holds up over time

I can understand that. My new years resolution is to quit smoking.....year 15 of failed new years. I'm starting to think this whole "sticking to it" isnt for me.

I've had the skinomi on for a few weeks now. It is the most impressive protector I have ever seen.
I can't see the original scratch, nor can I see fingerprints much. I can see better in light and it feels better than the gorilla glass- smooth but rubbery with no grab. It is as responsive as stock and has no dulling effect on the screen.
I do have some scratches-more like pits from having it in my pocket with keys and a lighter and other stuff while climbing around at work. I realized I had my full bodyweight on it and I feared I would crack the glass, and it's hard to describe how I knew I had given it way beyond normal abuse, and I have cracked a screen before with half the pressure- these pits haven't gone away so I ordered another one without hesitation even though I can only notice them on angles, and even then not much (I could have gone for the lifetime warranty replacement but I feel I really pushed it beyond its purpose, and it's too much hassle -with the GET25 discount it's only $8 anyway, and I was getting one for my wife's Desire that I gave her when I got the Defy). If I had my Desire in my pocket that day, I would guarantee it would have cracked.
I can see no other scratches, and one's I have had just fade away in days, as it is self healing.

Does anyone know if there is any good "anti-finger print" screen protector?

Getting rid of the oleophobic coating-How?

Hey guys,as title says(kind of anyway),I've had enough of the oleophobic coating on the SGS2.Fingerprints stay on screen no matter(I have very oily skin,unfortunately) and it's not any better than my Desire HD for that matter.Not that it bothers me for that,but it SCRATCHES like hell.I already have more fine scrathces on my GS2 after 2 weeks than on my DHD after 7 months.So I want to remove the oleophobic coating.
Now,I know it's done somehow by cleaning the screen using certain cleaning stuff,but what cleaning stuff?Can I use a window cleaner or something?And should I wipe it with a fiber cloth?

OP, take my advice , do NOT do it! You think the coating is not helping, wait till you remove it! It will be 100 times worse, literally!
If you do decide to rid the screen of the coating - I succeeded (on SGS1) with Chlorine toilet bowl cleaning liquid, but be very careful to not get it inside speakers/mikes. All the scratches remained though, mine were in the glass, not the coating.

You want that coating on there. Just get a screen protector and maybe a matte one if the finger prints bother you.

Yeah...Well,I found Zaggs(they even came to Greece...Oh well!) but I cannot find Steinheils.What about Belkin?They have a matte overlay that I think would be nice.
Also,what do you mean that Zaggs are the worst for sensitivity?Is it harder to select something on the screen with a protector on?

zaggs are the thickest screen protectors on the market!, they ruin the touchscreen experience, they DO block fingerprints well though. they also have the 'orange peel' effect on them.

When I got burgled the police said finger prints actually very difficult to pickup because finger tips don't have sweat glands. Relies on someone touching their face or hair or rubbing their palms together. This its not meant to be pointed comment but as you offered a reason, Try doing less of that

Oh sh!t,I didn't know that.And I was blaming my fingers for nothing?
Well,I'll try and touch my face less.When I sweat(especially now in the summer with the high temperatures) it gets oily like hell.It will get better with time(It's a puberty thing partially like acme),but for now it's killing me.
Thank you for the heads up though.Finally I found cops usefull!

My advice: polish your face often .
What i do is clean the screen with my shirt so now and then. Some days its worse then others...

I've got *very* long nails (I'm a girl ), never bother with screen protectors and I've yet to scratch a screen (HD2 stayed pristine for over 18 months, so is the S2 after a month) and shock horror, I don't always put my phone in a case before flinging it in my handbag though it's usually in a separate pocket... As for fingerprints, well a wipe on my jeans or t-shirt usually takes care of that.

A girl around here?I'm impressed!
Anyway,I too have long fingernails on my right hand because I play the guitar,but they don't damage the screen.I go to the beach very often and sand particles find their way everywhere.Now THEY do damage. ;-)

Guys hands tend to have more dirt (from putting their hands on the bench, on the ground or at the beach). As a result, there will be one or two tiny sand particles which then scratches the screen when they use the phone.

did you try alcohol and windex?

alcohol will remove the oleophobic coating, but very slowly. you'll end up with a haze.
i used meguiar's scratchx 2.0 to remove a scratch, not realizing there was a coating. result was a hazy ring where i had removed the coating.
tried rainx, with improved the slick feel but also caused more of the haze effect (alcohol). ended up using scratchx to remove the whole coating, using a flashlight to check, and putting a realook protector on. luckily the result is fantastic.
that said, don't remove any coating unless you really really have to. it doesn't seem like it but it is way better at preventing smudges than just glass.

A good friend of mine is a dermatologist. You and/or the cops are wrong. Maybe they tell that story to everybody so they don't get their hopes to high.
You can test for youself though. Wash you hands with antibacterial soap and dry them with and air handdryer. Hold your hand steady for 10 minutes without touching anything and then see i you'll leave prints on you phone

Vanilla no Screen protector

Is anyone here going Nakey with no screen protector? i've got one on right now and i can't STAND how the edges of the protector collect dust... i feel like taking it off..

I hate screen protectors as well. That said, everytime I've tried to go nekkid, I've eventually ended up with scratches. No matter how careful you are, it seems, Gorilla Glass WILL scratch. Relatively easily IMO.

I picked up an InvisibleShield HD from Best Buy and it is super clear and flush. I dont even notice it on there.

I will prob go with no screen protector, I had my HTC Hero for 3 years and had very minimal scratching without a screen protector. I only ever put my phone in my pocket on its own. I also keep my phones for the 3 year term that I get them on so by time the 3 years is up the re-sale value doesn't really matter to me any way so if it has some minor scratches it doesn't matter much since I will prob just pass the phone to someone for free anyway. Not to mention it looks and feels better without the protector and why not have the best experience with your phone instead of babying it.

I've never had one on my E4GT and it only has a few super faint scratches that you have to turn it off and put in sunlight to see. I don't think I'll put one on my GSIII either - they always end up getting bubbles or peeling back at some point.

I am not sure... It is a sticky on one side and you apply a solution to apply it to the screen which makes positioning it very easy.

The only phone I've ever had a tiny scratch in was with my Droid Bionic. But it was my work phone which means that I didn't baby it the way I normally do with my phones. None of my phones have ever had any scratch on them, and in fact the only phone that did have a screen protector on it, broke. Not that a screen protector is supposed to prevent it from breaking after someone stepped on it but yeah that's another story. I'm also planning on getting a white one and don't think it would look too nice after a while as the glue around the edges gets dark.
I figure as long as my pockets are free from anything else and they stay clean that I shouldn't have any issues with the screen. Just take care of your stuff people. Also while i'm at it, I think it's disgusting when people here scratch their screen then return it for another one. That's not anyone's fault but your own. There is already a high demand for these devices and the carrier or samsung should not be held responsible for that.

Screen protectors are a pain in the ass. Get rid of it. You can always tell that it's on there. Just take care of your phone. I keep my right pocket for the phone only. I never put anything in my right pocket except for the phone.

I never use a screen protector. Never got scratches on my phone either. This is gorilla glass 2, so if you mess this up you don't need a phone

Stick your finger in the sand at the beach, then swipe your finger across your screen. Report back.
Sand will scratch the screen. Sand is actually at locations other than the beach and may come into contact with your phone/finger.

One year on the nexus and not a single scratch. My daughters epic is 2 years old without a single scratch and she just throws it in her book bag. Neither have ever had screen protectors.

I think most people would notice if sand came in contact with their phone/finger and wouldn't have an issue scratching the phone.

I've never used a screen protector, nor do I have any intention of using one on this device. My s2 looks like the day I got it.

Meh. Some sand/dirt is overseen depending on its size as not all dirt/sand is the same size. You can google gorilla glass and scratches and see it will scratch. I'm not saying everybody will scratch their screen, but I'm not taking any chances. Besides, I'm a pro at putting on screen protectors so I do it anyways..

If you are worried about scratches, I'd rather get a flip cover or slide in pouch than taint the display with a screen protector. Granted I live in the midwest and there isn't exactly a lot of beaches around, but I had my Epic since launch and never put anything on it and the screen still looks like new (the bezel not so much). It's even been dropped a few times landing facedown on my driveway/garage floor.

I have been naked on my phones the past several years and no visible or major scratches. If you are careful and don't put coins or keys in same pocket you should be good.

I'm going without a screen protector. One reason is that I suck at putting them on and get really annoyed with the bubbles and dust particles underneath. But the screen is just too good to cover up with a protector. I take good care of my phones so I don't have to worry too much about scratches. I had my GS2 for 8 months with no protector and no scratches at all. I put it in my pocket without anything else and it was fine. I make sure my hands are clean before using my phone.

I always start out with a protector, then end up taking it off after 6 months or so and that's with every Smartphone I've ever owned 2007-present.
