can i re-partition without reflashing ROM? - G1 General

I want to adjust my swap partition/swappiness and i was curious if I can do it without having to reflash the ROM or will I have to start over with a fresh wipe, partition, install?

You can set the swap size to any value up to and anything below the value you made the swap partition when you partitioned.

Ther is no need to reflash any rom when repartitioning your sd unless your messing with the ext partition and you have any kind of apps2sd, but the swap shouldn't mess with your rom since it just adds extra ram I believe

yeah if you need to mess with your ext partition, backup your apps first then do it because it will wipe the ext filesystems CLEAN.

[Q] Question about Ext4 Partitions and using new Builds

I cant remember how often i flashes a new Build and allways i reconfigure my sd card with gpartet. But now i'm thinking about if it is realy nessessary to rebuild the partition layout. if i use a build with no ext4 support the whole build is stored into the internal memory. and i dont need to format or wipe any parts of the internal memory. so if the phone uses the ext4 partition as internal memory (userspace) is it realy nessessary to format it manualy? or does a flash clean the userspace?
i'm not realy sure because last few days i flashed a new version of a desire hd build and after flashing it was not needet to renew any config. it startet and everything was still there. so i'm not sure if i'm right.

When you flash WP7 it will wipe your SD card. You could try copying the WP7 partition to another SD card if you have one, flash and then delete newly created partition, copy the partition back to the card you are using. Not sure if it will work though and you will need a partition manager like Minitool Partition Manager or Easeus Partition Manager, both are free.

thanks for your reply but i realise my memory card will be wiped just wanted to know if i should wipe everything myself to get a clean flash as with windows 6.5 i used to get problems if i didn't use task 29. But if its not needed it would save me alot of time
I just like to know what the best way is to go about things to avoid unnecessary problems as reported by other users

it would be usefull if you told us exactly which desire hd rom, how you are running it (daf, cwm, sd card), and whether you have an ext partition on your sd card. Oh, and which phone you have, regular or tmous.
Sense roms are big, they take up a big chunk of the nand, so it is almost always essential to use app2sd and/or data2sd. (read the thread for the rom you have to know which it supports)
More accurate info = more accurate help.
rubbish info = rubbish guesswork help.

Thanks for your reply...
here is my details..
ROM : LeoRCMix S v.1.5 (RCMixS v.2.0) [Sense 2.1+3.0]
Running using : CWM
Phone : HTC HD2
Im using : TMOUS
I know i have to use app2sd/data2sd.. but im not sure how to config it.. even i tried to do but im struck with boot screen..
ok, so it should only need a 200 meg system partition, so my guess would be that you haven't set up the 1gb ext partition? you can do that through cwm (backup your sd card first, it will get formatted) and
but im not sure how to config it

you dont have to. it does it itself so long as you have the ext partition properly created. I also think that if you DONT have the ext partition set up yet, you will probably need to reinstal the rom after you DO set it up.
So, summary, , , question 1 - do you have an ext partition set up?
(Also, and this causes a lot of confusion, , , when the system uses an ext partition, it DOES NOT show the extra space in the available memory count, but it does get used, , so for example my phone shows 210MB or so free internal space, , , i install a 10MB probgram, that goes down to 200, BUT after i reboot, it goes back up to 210, , because the prog has actually installed to my 512MB ext partition, not the 210 internal space.)

then you are wasting 200 meg, , that rom says in post 1
EU and TMOUS: 200M system + 1GB EXT partition

that means you have 200 meg empty in your system partition, not being used.
Stuff that you install do not get installed to the system partition, nothing (or at least not apps / settings) gets put into the system partition, except the system at installation.
Do a full cwm backup, reflash using a 200MB partition layout, reflash the rom to teh new layout, restore your data and sd-ext partitions from advanced restore (in cwm) and you will recover the 200MB

Thanks a lot... now i understood wht is system and data memory.. now i got 200mb internal memory.. thanks again
same problem
i have a nand of 4.1.2 in my hd2 its pacman
it shows system memory only 13mb, i have removed all apps i installed earlier but still no space freed, can i atleast get the same 150mb back which i had earlier i.e any way to wipe all data on it/hard reset it?
is there any way of expanding the memory? because after i have installed 10-15 apps the memory vanished(even though i moved the apps to sdcard using app2sd) does that means i can not install more apps any way??
p.s i am a new user of android dont know how to install new rom etc so please explain the solution in simple steps.

[Q] Resize rocovery partition

If I resize my recovery partition on my HD2, is all data on my SD card lost? and would i have to reflash a new NAND ROM?
Repartitioning your internal memory will not affect the data on your sd card in any way.
Yes, you would have to flash a new ROM, or restore a backup.
so i take it the recovery partition clockwork uses it not on that sd card
which leads to my other question, if my rom requires a 169mb recovery and i use a 400mb recovery, will it work?
yes it will work, but you will waste 231mb of rom space. This is because you will set a system partition of 400mb, and load into it 169mb of files, BUT once the rom is running, all your user data, installed apps, etc get put into different partitions. Nothing will use the extra 231mb in the system partition, so it will be completely wasted and unuseable.

Very unlikely. Why not just change the size?

bored on my help desk job, was gonna mess with my rom,but if im goin to resize i rather do it at home....lol
think im gonna try the bliss rom, any takes on it?
well you could always flash the rom, play with it, then when you get home, do a cwm backup, change the part size, reflash the rom, then in cwm do an advanced restore and just restore the sd-ext and data partitions. hey presto, system size changed and any settings you configure today will be restored into the new flash.
CAnt comment on the rom, i only use typhoon.

CAUTION; the CWM partition make it is for the SD and it WILL ERASE ALL DATA ON SD , for partition internal memory u have to use other tools on a PC (my favorite its HD2 toolkit)

Typhoon has a nice stable sense rom.?
Send me a link
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
Typhoon is a cm7 rom. Cm7 roms don't have sense.
I CAN highly recommend it, though. I've been on an older version typhoon for over a month now, and the only bug is the occasional failed video capture. Annoying, but doesn't happen often.

Copying from one partitioned SD card to another

I'm trying to understand the most convenient way to make a copy of an SD card that has an EXT partition on it. This would need to be done anytime you upgrade from a smaller to a larger SD card, so I have to believe a number of people on these forums have dealt with it.
This is what I'm expecting to be done... please confirm if it's correct:
Make a nandroid backup, stored on the old SD card
Copy the nandroid backup to PC
Install new SD card and partition it accordingly
Copy nandroid backup to new SD card
Perform a nandroid restore
At this point, everything should be as it was, with the larger SD card. Correct? I've also noticed an alternative that would probably work, that being a partition management program like EaseUS.
My 32Gb SD card arrived so I downloaded Mini-Partition to set it up. Then when I went to copy the EXT3 partition from my 8Gb SD card, the option wasn't possible. Apparently I can't copy it into a larger EXT3 space, only unallocated space. So, I removed the target EXT3 partition, making it unallocated, and then tried to copy and resize. Apparently the tool won't let you resize an existing EXT3 partition. I installed EaseUS to try this operation and encountered the same thing.
From what I've just experienced, I'm now thinking that if I try to restore a nandroid backup onto my new card, it will override the newly minted EXT3 partition with the smaller EXT3 partition.
Searching around turned up a lot of Ubuntu/Linux information, requiring one to boot up in those operating systems and execute a long series of commands to enlarge the EXT3 partition. I'd rather not go down that path right now. Is there some easier way of doing this? If not... then I'm thinking what I need to do is move as many apps having data I need to my phone, then just opt not to restore the EXT3 partition and go back to manually move apps to the EXT3 partition again.

Presently running CM7.2, which supports EXT3. I'm just not getting how I can manage the EXT3 partition. When I switch to a new ROM and wipe the system, then all apps installed on the EXT3 partition would be deleted, correct?
So, what this ultimately means is that each and every time I switch ROMs, the EXT3 partition must be wiped and applications manually moved back there. It's annoying, but I haven't found any other way around this.
