Flashing a rom on linux? - HD2 General

I have been having problems on XP(not regarding flashing). I am just tired of XP so i was thinking on using Ubuntu. Im going to get to the point now, Is there any software that i can use to flash my phones on linux?

I dont think so really. I have been using linux for a few years and not really seen anything for flashing wm phones. One option i was thinking of was setting up an xp install in a virtual machine and then trying that. I guess you could also try using the windows flashing app via wine but i just havent had time to do this yet.
If you do find a solution please can you report back here as it would be useful to know.

try microSD instead
well actually I am running a Gentoo OS here and tried flashing in XP in virtual machine in VirtualBox, but it did not work for me (after a certain time a timeout occured). From now on I will always flash via microSD card, I have a spare one I can always use for these purposes. Already flashed two different ROMs and works OK, so no need for XP anymore.

Flashing fails with Parallels .. Have not tried Vmware to flash.
You should try HSPL... ...use SD card to flash, works flawless !
Fusion and Parallels were not stable enough (XP/W7).
Having a G5 you need to install HSPL on a friends PC, all the rest can be done with yours.
I have tried ( on my iMac and MacBook Pro ) to flash thro VMware Fusion ( use both XP and Window 7) - mostly unsuccessful - hang midway. So I still use my desktop PC when I need to flash rom

Just flash the rom via your storage card. Search the forums for the methodology I have a Mac and use Boot Camp, so I can't give you the details, but it involves switching your device into boot mode and then installing the rom file (the nbh file) from the storage card..
Good luck
Ok guys i have tried everything Parrales, Vmware, Virtual PC 7 and i have failed miserably everywhere. Soo how do u do the HSPL and can u update phone through that as well? And my friends will not allow me to install XP on their mac for even 2h so i cant do anything..... Except HSPL and what is it exactly?
PC
considering most of the world uses windows surely you have at least one friend with a pc?
The programs are small and don't actually even install on the computer so guess worst case scenario you could do it at a internet cafe. but flashing ROM's is kinda addictive so having access to a pc is good so you can backup your data to outlook. considering you have a g5 maybe time for an upgrade anyway. You seem technically minded or at least willing to learn why not build yourself a cheap PC using the same components in a mac that way you can run snow leopard for your day to day and have windows 7 when you need to flash and backup plus it will save you round a grand.
Well i actually i do have a kick ass Windows 7 pc builded it my selft the only problem is that its in the other country XD... So ur best bet is to do it in the internet cafe?
That would work but...
That would work but given that from my experience the majority of ROM's on this forum are a little to cutting edge for day to day use and you need at least a couple of days to give a new one a fair go you could end up with something you hate till you can next get to a computer.
but yeh, you need active sync, hard SPL and the ROM image all of which can be downloaded on your mac to a USB stick. You would have to install active sync though. then connect the phone set to sync (doesn't matter if you dont set it up to sync with the with the internet cafe computer) run hard SPl 2-3 mins, run new ROM image 10-15 mins and your done. Dont forget to backup off course..
when u hard spl your device with PC machine, u could just use SD card method to flash rom next time... but u have to hardspl first

Updating ROMs on Ubuntu 10.04

Has anybody tried updating their ROM from Ubuntu yet, any known issues?
Sorry I think I might have posted this in the wrong forum.
i frequently flash my phone when in developing on my pc (runs Mandriva linux) by using a VM, specifically a Virtual Machine of Windows XP in VirtualBox
hope this helps
Thats probably the safest way to do it, good thinking. Cheers
I wish there were tools for flashing and cooking available for linux. I run Ubuntu all the time unless I'm cooking or flashing and for my Magic Jack.
I have never used virtual machine but I may look in to it.
I have copy nbh file to the sd card and rename it to leoimg.nbh, then reboot hd2 to flash.
Touch HD can be flashed in ubuntu.

Flashing with Odin in Virtualbox / Linux : works really well !

Hello folks.
I'm working on custom kernel & ramdisk on Linux and was tired to plug/deplug the phone from my Linux workstation to a Windows netbook to flash it...
..Before I realized that Odin works perfectly well on a XP VM on a Ubuntu 10.4 host / Linux 2.6.35.2 !
Big bonus of this setup is that the software virtual USB switch allow you to plug/deplug the phone without touching any hardware.
Odin re-discover the phone and you can flash next millisecond
PS : this has maybe already has been reported, but I know few people who thought it did not work.
I never had any issues flashing my old Hermes through a VM XP machine on my hackingtosh back in the day, as long as I selected the correct USB port to stop OSX trying to grab hold of it.
Not quite "off topic" but thought it would put a few minds at rest

I thought that Vmware was better than VirtualBox for USB tweaks, maybe this is history !
Tell us aware of your tests on Mac
In download mode, SGS appears as Gadget Serial [021B] in VirutalBox.
Pretty good news, I should really clean the dust off my XP virtual machine!
Is Samsung Kies working too?
VMWare 7 in Ubuntu is fine too...

Thanks for your feedback! I replaced VMWare with VirtualBox many years ago and this kind of issues was the main reason, you should stick to VirtualBox!
Can someone tell me how to prevent my mac to grab my phone on usb? I always get an error from my virtualbox, thay device is used by someone else.

Can't get the Galaxy S i9000 to connect to VirtualBox either.
I select Gadget Serial, it waits a minute or so, then pops up this error message:
Failed to attach the USB device Unknown device to the virtual machine XP.
Could not find a USB device with uuid (xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx).

After that, sometimes the phone still appears as available to connect, others it doesn't. Very similar to the VMWare problem.
This is on my Late 2009 MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard. Doesn't matter which USB port I select. I might try a powered hub in between the phone and the laptop. Connecting the SGS to the laptop USB is always a bit of hit and miss for both adb sessions and even mounting the sdcards. I frequently have to unlplug and replug the phone to get a connection. I've seen a few others report the same.
Must be an issue with OS X itself, but to make sure I'll have to try this on my Mac Pro desktop.
I'll report back any success, but I'm not hopeful, I've yet to read a report of someone successfully using Odin in a vm on a Mac.
I'll pile on with my test results. Thus far, under Mac OS X 10.6.4, I have not successfully connected the Vibrant to a VM USB in any Windows virtual machine with the Samsung USB drivers installed. I tried vmware fusion 3.1.1 and the latest virtualbox, 3.2.8. Both failed to recognize the phone when attempting to mount it. No issues in the Mac host environment or Bootcamp. The problem is limited to the VM environments under the Mac host environment.
If anyone has successfully connected the Vibrant to a Windows virtual machine running under vmware fusion or virtual box for Mac please report your results. I did quite a bit of searching and found no successful results with this combo. Thanks.

Appears to be a lost cause for Mac owners who won't boot camp.

This is exciting.
this thread is definitely NOT what I had hoped to find after trying to use odin under VMWare/Win7 (MBP 2009)
I'll report back if I figure out anything. I've had similar battles with activesync/WMC under VMWare as well, and I've got things playing nice after some tinkering
Was a little worried about using virtual machines to flash my favorite toy, but this thread was the push I needed to give it a shot. Plus, seems like there's a fix to get out of almost any brick you manage to install on your phone, even if you have to build a JIG its not expensive.
So gave it a shot and it worked like a charm, Mint/Ubuntu 10.10 host using Virtualbox. One less reason to ever use Windows 7. Even when I don't boot it Windows breaks, I swear its a scheme to keep people who fix Microsoft products employed......
Supercurio that mean "Odin in Recovery" ? or im think in a false way? to flash tar files in recovery..

Wow, you might become an archaelogist if you managed to bring back this thread from the ashes! We now have Heimdall, which is GNU/Linux native. Give that a shot.
I ever used Odin in a VM of Windows 7 over Ubuntu 11.04.
Heimdall is only for 64bit system and i user a 32bit version.. so...
But..Every flashed i did went good

Flashing Android into HD2 Using Linux

Hi,
Is it possible to install Android using from Ubuntu?
Thanks,
Mohammad
Maybe you could try using wine, but I wouldn't risk it personally.
If you own a copy of windows, you could install windows into a virtualbox. But if you're going to do that, you might as well install a dual-boot so you can run either linux or windows.
In short I dont think so. i have been trying for ages to get this working and just had to cave in the end when the NAND release came out. WINE was just a non-starter for flashing, and for some reason i couldnt get my virtualbox windows XP to ever want to flash the phone. I faffed and faffed, even got the sync fully working in the virtualbox WinXP but couldnt get flash working.
I have ended up with an XP install on an old HDD just to flash my HD2!
After NAND android ROMS devs should work in a new way to flash Android using Linux

Flash tools under Linux (> Windows VM?)

Long time ago i asked a Question here, but there's something i'm interested in.
I currently dual boot Win and Linux and i'm totally done in doing this, wont waste space for this windows anymore, so my question is, how to use the Flash tool under linux which is explicit for windows?
Someone tested it already? Is it maybe possible to use it in a Windows virtualmachine or will it cause some trouble due to missing USB drivers, even if they are installed?
Thanks.
